Portion of the relics of St. Luke (Voyno-Yasenetsky) brought to Munich Munich, October 1, 2013 The Greek Orthodox Church of the Savior (Salvatorkirche) In his early days, the future Holy Hierarch studied painting in Munich. Here, to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Savior (Salvatorkirche), on September 27, Metropolitan Joel of Edessa brought a reliquary where, containing along with other relics a portion of holy relics of the new Confessor, St. Luke, Archbishop of Crimea, reports Sedmitza. Archbishop Luke (Valentin Felixovich Voyno-Yasenetsky, 1877-1961) was an outstanding surgeon, professor of medicine, a spiritual writer, and a hierarch-confessor of the faith. The time of his youth was also connected with Munich, where his teacher was the German painter Heinrich Knirr (1862-1944). The historians suppose that young Valentin Voyno-Yasenetsky probably attended services in Munich in this very church—the only Orthodox Church in the capital of Bavaria of that time. On September 27–29, solemn services with participation of Metropolitan Joel of Edessa and Bishop Bartholomew (Patriarchate of Constantinople), Bishop Agapit of Stuttgart (ROCOR) and local clergymen were celebrated in the Church of the Saviour. The bringing of the relics of St. Luke has been timed to " The day of Orthodox parishes of Munich " , which took place on September 29 in the Greek parish of the Savior. Situated in the historic part of the city, this former cemetery church of the Savior (1494) and former Domkirche (Cathedral Church), later given to Orthodox Greeks, is famous for the fact that from 1832 on it was regularly attended by workers of the Russian embassy and their family members. Here, Fyodor Ivanovich Tyutchev (1803-1873), the great Russian poet and diplomat, would go to pray, and his children were baptized here. The altar of this church has a Russian-made epitaphion (symbolic burial shroud of the Lord) of work—a gift of the Russian people who attended services in this church in the 19th century. St. Alexis, a Resolute Zealot for Orthodoxy/Православие.Ru St. Alexis, a Resolute Zealot for Orthodoxy Archimandrite Luke (Murianka) " On May 6, 2014 Archimandrite Luke delivered a lecture at St. Mary " s Cathedral (OCA) in Minneapolis, MN. The talk was part of an annual Saint Alexis (Toth) lecture series sponsored by the St. Mary " s Boriss-Hansen Committee. St. Mary " s plays a significant role in the history of Orthodoxy in America. The Cathedral altar was consecrated by St. Patriarch Tikhon and St. Alexis was the pastor of the church. The parish hall, next to the church, is located where the first Russian Orthodox seminary once stood. St. Alexis is one of the great missionary confessors of the Orthodox Church and is lauded as such in Father Luke " s talk. " Text of Archimandrite Luke " s Lecture: St/Alexis (Toth) St. Alexis, a Resolute Zealot for Orthodoxy In light of contemporary ecumenical exchanges, dialogues, theological commissions, and dramatic statements frequently confusing and scandalizing the Orthodox faithful, we need to pause a moment and refresh our memory with the image of a prophet zealous for the Lord " s truth found in the person of St Alexis, who not only resembles an Old Testament prophet but is equal in spirit to great luminaries such as Sts. Athanatious the Great, Cyril of Alexandria, Photios the Great, and Averky of Jordanville. Some might favor a different reading of his life, by excusing his words and actions as the result of a misunderstanding, an overreaction to circumstances, which we now might better understand through the prism of unfortunate historical events. What really inspired Fr. Alexis " actions and how would he would have reacted to the presentation of the facts of his life through our compromising contemporary attitudes, may be discerned from his life and writings. “St. Alexis was born in a Carpatho-Rusyn family of priests, both his father and brother were priests and his uncle was a bishop. Like most Carpatho-Rusyns of the time, the Toths were Eastern Rite-Uniate Catholics. After completing his seminary education, he married Rosalie Mihalich, the daughter of a priest in 1878, was ordained to the priesthood and assigned as the second priest in a Greek Catholic parish. While serving there, his wife and their only child died. The critical time of Father Toth " s life began with his arrival in America in November, 1889 to become the first pastor of the new Greek Catholic church in Minneapolis. Five weeks after his arrival, Father Toth met the local Roman Catholic bishop, Archbishop John Ireland. Learning that Father Toth had been married, the Archbishop refused to recognize him as a legitimate Catholic priest and forbade him to function as a priest anywhere in the Diocese.

The Gospel according to St. Luke published in the Nanai language December 6, 2012 A t the request of Metropolitan Ignatius of Khabarovsk and Amur Diocese the Institute for Bible Translation IBT has released a new edition of the Gospel of Luke in Nanai language accompanied by a parallel Russian Synodal translation, reports the IBT website. In the preface to the new edition the head of the Priamurskaya Archdiocese Native Nations Affairs Commission hieromonk Nikanor (Lepeshev) notes that " the far Eastern natives’ first written language appeared due to the efforts of the Orthodox Church. The sacred Gospel texts and Christian prayers were the first books written and published in native languages. The first translations of the Scriptures into the native languages were made in the XIX century by Orthodox missionaries. For this purpose they created alphabets for the Evenki (Tungus), Evens (Lamuts), Nanai (Golds).” The previous edition of the Gospel of Luke in Nanai was published in 2002. The new edition of the Bible in the the language of the local natives, who are bilingual, will serve as an educational tool for the clergy; it can become a link in a bilingual environment and a tool for the study of the Nanai language for those of its carriers who have partially lost their native language. The Institute for Bible Translation together with the Khabarovsk and Amur diocese is planning to release an audio version of the translation and to continue to translate the other books of the Scripture into the Nanai language. In the past before the revolution some translations of the Gospels were made with the blessing of St. Innocent (Veniaminov). Among those translations was the Gospel of Matthew in Nanai (Goldsk) made by Fr. Procopius Protodiakonov (1884), which has undeniable value as a monument of scientific and cultural history. It is however not suitable for ordinary readers. Therefore the choice of the Diocese when ordering the reissue of the Gospel in Nanai was made in favor of the Institute for Bible Translation Version. The previous edition was published in 2002. This year, IBT received a request from the Orthodox Metropolitan Ignatius of Khabarovsk and Priamur to reprint the translation of the Gospel of Luke in the Nanai language, accompanied by a parallel Russian Synodal translation. In the introduction to the new edition Hieromonk Nikanor (Lepeshev), the Head of the ROC Khabarovsk and Priamur Metropolitan Commission on work with the indigenous peoples noted that " the first translations of the Bible into the languages of the Far Eastern aborigines were made in the 19th century by Orthodox missionaries. For this purpose alphabets were created for the Evenki (Tungus), Evens (Lamuts) and Nanais (Golds). Thus, these Far Eastern peoples obtained their scripts through the Orthodox Church. And the first book written and published in their languages was the sacred Gospel texts and Christian prayers. " There are some pre-revolutionary translations of the Gospels in the languages of the indigenous inhabitants of the Amur region, made with the blessing of St. Innocent (Benjaminov), including: The Gospel of Matthew in Nanai (Golds) translated by Fr. Procopius Protodiakonov (1884), which has undeniable value as a historical and cultural monument, but for several reasons it is no longer useful for large-scale reading and distribution. Therefore the choice of the diocese when ordering a reissue was made in favour of the IBT translation. The staff of the Institute for Bible Translation were pleased to learn that the book is in demand and that there is a need to release it again in a new format, which will bring the translation closer to the reader. The new edition of the Bible in the mother tongue of the local population, as a diglot, will help the clergy in their education work, serving as a link in a bilingual environment, and finally will become a tool for studying Nanai for those of its speakers who have partially lost their ancestral language.
