Hieromartyr Proterius the Patriarch of Alexandria Commemorated on February 28 Photo: Days.Pravoslavie.Ru      The Hieromartyr Proterius, Patriarch of Alexandria, and those with him. The priest Proterius lived in Alexandria during the patriarchal tenure of Dioscorus (444-451), an adherent of the Monophysite heresy of Eutyches. Proterius fearlessly denounced the heretics and confessed the Orthodox Faith. In 451 at the Fourth Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon, the heresy of Eutyches was condemned and the teaching of Christ as Perfect God and Perfect Man, existing in these two natures “unconfusedly” and “indivisibly” [and “immutably” and “inseparably”] was set forth. The heretic Dioscorus was deposed and exiled, and Proterius, distinguished for his strict and virtuous life, was placed upon the patriarchal throne of Alexandria. However, many supporters of Dioscorus remained in Alexandria. Rebelling against the election of Proterius, they rioted and burned the soldiers who were sent out to pacify them. The pious emperor Marcian (450-457) deprived the Alexandrians of all the privileges they were accustomed to, and sent new and reinforced detachments of soldiers. The inhabitants of the city then quieted down and begged Patriarch Proterius to intercede with the emperor to restore their former privileges to them. The kindly saint consented and readily obtained their request. After the death of Marcian the heretics again raised their heads. Presbyter Menignus (“the Cat”), himself striving for the patriarchal dignity, and taking advantage of the absence of the prefect of the city, was at the head of the rioters. Saint Proterius decided to leave Alexandria, but that night he saw in a dream the holy Prophet Isaiah, who said to him, “Return to the city, I am waiting to take you.” The saint realized that this was a prediction of his martyric end. He returned to Alexandria and concealed himself in a baptistry. The insolent heretics broke into this refuge and killed the Patriarch and six men who were with him. The fact that it was Holy Saturday and the Canon of Pascha was being sung did not stop them. In their insane hatred they tied a rope to the body of the murdered Patriarch, and dragged it through the streets. They beat and lacerated it, and finally they burned it, scattering the ashes to the wind. The Orthodox reported this to the holy Emperor Leo (457-474) and Saint Anatolius, Patriarch of Constantinople (July 3). An army arrived at Alexandria, the rebellion was crushed, and Menignus was brought to trial and exiled. There are technically four “lents,” or fasting seasons, during the liturgical year of the Orthodox Church: the Great Lent consisting of “forty days” preceding Holy Week and Easter, the Apostles’ Fast preceding the Feast of SS. Peter and Paul (June 29th), two weeks preceding the Dormition of the Theotokos (August 15th), and the forty days in preparation for the Nativity of Christ (December 25th). It is Great Lent, however, that enjoys both chronological and liturgical primacy, and was the model for the others. A fasting period of up to a week preceding the paschal vigil appears as early as the 3rd c. Believers, according to the Apostolic Tradition (q.v.), were expected to share in the catechumens’ preparation for their Baptism (q.v.) during the Easter Vigil. The 4th c. expansion of Christianity saw this period extended to essentially its present dimensions, as is evident in the account Egeria (q.v.) gives of Lent in late 4th c. Jerusalem. As presently observed, the Orthodox Lent includes six weeks of fasting, less the Saturday of Lazarus and Palm Sunday, which begin the Holy Week commemorating Christ’s suffering. For four Sundays prior to the fast, reckoned as beginning on a Monday, the themes that are to predominate during the forty days are brought to the believers’ attention through the reading of the Gospel lessons of the Pharisee and Publican (humility), Prodigal Son (repentance), the Last Judgment (righteous deeds and the memory of death), and forgiveness. Each of the lenten Sundays is also devoted to a particular theme. The first commemorates the final victory over iconoclasm (q.v.) in 843, the second remembers Gregory Palamas (q.v.), the champion of asceticism, the third the Holy Cross, the fourth Joh n Climacus (q.v.), and the fifth the great image of repentance, Mary of Egypt. Church services during this period reflect the themes of repentance (q.v.), godly sorrow, and entrance into the Church. They are longer, make greater use of Old Testament readings (reflecting also Lent’s origins as a preparation for Baptism), and in Russian employ melodies in the minor key and vestments of somber hue. Perhaps the characteristic service par excellence of Great Lent is the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. Since the Byzantine Church forbade the celebration of the Eucharist (q.v.) during the weekdays of the fast, communion was-and is-provided the faithful through an evening service, essentially Vespers, on Wednesdays and Fridays. Archive Newly formed community of the Moscow Patriarchate in Mexico prayerfully celebrates the 75th birthday of its Primate 22 November 2021 year 17:38 On November 19-22, 2021, with a blessing of the acting administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA and Canada, Bishop Matthew of Sourozh, the clerics of the St. Nicholas Cathedral in New York, Hegumen Nikodim (Balyasnikov) and Rev. Mark Rashkov, made a pastoral visit to the newly formed community in the Mexican city of Cancun.  On Saturday, November 20, the 75th birthday of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the Orthodox Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the local church of the Resurrection of Christ with a permission of the head of the Catholic diocese, Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cardenas. During the Divine Liturgy, Orthodox people in Cancun had an opportunity to worship and partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. During the liturgy, ardent prayers were lifted up for the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church. During the prayer for the repose of the dead, His Holiness Patriarch’s parents, Archpriest Mikhail and Matushka Raisa, as well as the Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov) of eternal memory, the spiritual father of His Holiness, were commemorated.  After the Liturgy, “Many Years of Life” to His Holiness Kirill was sung. After the Blessing of Water, the clergy had a talk with the faithful. They discussed various matters concerning the ordering of the community life. Two years ago, the Orthodox people in Cancun, Mexico, appealed to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia to bless their intention to organize a parish of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Moscow Patriarchate office for institutions abroad instructed the administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, Bishop Matthew of Sourozh, to help organize regular divine services for the members of the community and to explore a possibility for opening a parish. In 2012, with a blessing of Bishop Matthew, the rector of the church of the Intercession in Mexico, Father Kirill Chakon, made several visits to the community of the faithful in Cancun, where he celebrated the Divine Liturgy, administered sacraments and requested services at the local Catholic church kindly offered by Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cardenas of Chetumal and Cancun. On January 19, 2020, the Feast of the Theophany, with a blessing of Bishop Matthew, Rev. Mark Rashkov, head of the office of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, visited Cancun and, assisted by Rev. Kirill Chakon, celebrated the Divine Liturgy and the Order of the Great Sanctification of Water. On May 8, 2021, the Bright Saturday, Rev. Mark Rashkov celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the church of the Resurrection of Christ in Cancun, after which he blessed Easter cakes and distributed to the faithful the Artos he brought from New York. Tikhon (Shevkunov) Moscow, March 20, 2017 Photo: RIA-Novosti      Speaking at the State Historical Museum on Saturday, March 18, in a lecture entitled “The February Revolution of 1917: What Was It?” deputy abbot of Sretensky Monastery and chairman of the Patriarchal Cultural Council Bishop Tikhon (Shevkunov) encouraged the gathered crowd to draw lessons from the tragic events of the past. During the course of the talk, the topic of Gregory Rasputin was broached, who Bp. Tikhon called an “absolutely mysterious figure.” The head of the patriarchal council said he believes it necessary to conduct a “serious study” into the personality of Gregory Rasputin, whose memory has been intimately connected with that of the family of Russia’s last tsar, holy Martyr Nicholas II. In his talk he warned against making hasty judgments about Rasputin, touching upon those who are pushing for his canonization, reports RIA-Novosti . “There’s a whole group that’s trying now to declare Rasputin a saint. But wait—everything has to be very seriously investigated here. I don’t want to categorically say ‘no’ to anyone. Of course it is a question demanding the most serious research,” the bishop stated. Speaking for himself, Bp. Tikhon said that Rasputin “remains a completely mysterious figure: we meet such people in history, and we will know about them only at the Last Judgment.” “Truly he helped stopped the bleeding of the heir—Alexei Nikolaevich, and in this he was completely indispensable for the royal family, but there also exist objective facts … that speak about certain extremely unpleasant moments in his behavior… He was an unusual man, and often these testimonies offered to us dispute other facts and testimonies,” Vladyka noted. “They used him for undermining the government, and that is absolutely clear,” he said, calling again for serious research. The team from the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia and the State Academy of Arts began its work on Parkhali Monastery on Saturday, reports agenda.ge . The monastery was built by Georgian Orthodox Church figure Gregory of Khandzta under the reign of Georgia’s King Davit III Kuropalates sometime before 973. The monastery is known as the place where The Martyrdom of the Holy Royal Martyr Queen Shushanik (†475) Saint Shushanik was the wife of the Georgian prince Varsken, the ruler of Hereti. Mass Baptism in Kiamba, Philippines September 30, 2015 The newly-baptized are parishioners of four former Philippine Independent Catholic Church parishes in the Sarangani province: St. Joseph the Worker Parish (now St. Joseph the Betrothed Orthodox Church) in Poblacion Kiamba; San Isidro Labrador parish (now St. Isidore of Chios Orthodox Church) in Salakit; Nuestra Sra. Sela Paz parish (now Holy Theophany Orthodox Church) in Kayupo; and the Mission of the Theotokos of the Life-Giving Spring in the town of Maitum, Sarangani Province. There are now nine parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate in the Philippines in addition to another twenty still undergoing catechism. There remain around two hundred faithful to be baptized from these four parishes who were prevented from attending due to distance and bad weather, among other reasons. Their reception is yet to be scheduled. Saturday’s mass baptism took place after almost two years of catechism and was followed by the Divine Liturgy in which the newly-baptized received Holy Communion for the first time.      Fr. Silouan writes: “Kiamba is in an area where the Moro Nationalist Liberation Front (Islamic secessionist group) is quite active, and a number of foreigners have been abducted this week by various groups of evildoers, so we were grateful for the escort the Philippine National Police provided for our sacrament and our procession from the church to the beach and back (even if their machine guns were a little strange to American eyes).” Fr. Thousands of believers joined in the march from Radu Voda Monastery to the Patriarchal Cathedral, in celebration of the Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, reports the Basilica News Agency . We offer these flowers of faith and spiritual feats to our Savior as a sign of thanksgiving and as a petition to sanctify our life and to grant us the joy of Holy Pascha... A willow resembles a man who fasted for a long period, who knelt many times, who made many prostrations and who has inner spiritual beauty,” the Romanian primate expounded. The Mid-American Diocese Conference Welcomes Protopriest Andrei Tkachev Diocese of Chicago and Mid-America, July 1, 2013 With the blessing of His Grace Bishop Peter of Cleveland, Administrator of the Diocese of Chicago and Mid-America of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, Holy Virgin Protection Cathedral in Chicago hosted the Third Orthodox Conference from June 21-13, 2013. Invited to this event was Protopriest Andrei Tkachev of Kiev, renowned preacher and publicist, one of the most-read contributors to Pravoslavie.ru, host of the television program Na son gryadushchii [Evening prayers], author of Mysli o pokajanii [Thoughts on Repentance], Missijonerskije zapiski [Missionary Notes], Loskutnoje odejalo [Patchwork Quilt], Smotri, nebo stanovitsja blizhe [Behold, Heaven Approaches], Prigotovlenije k smerti [Preparation for Death], and other books. The first two days of the conference were held at Novo-Gracanica Monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church. On Friday evening, a bonfire discussion was held on a meadow at the shore of the monastery lake. Fr Andrei sat on a bench, with his listeners surrounding the bonfire, enthusiastically discussing Divine Liturgy. Some of the participants shared the thought that they felt like they were back in those distant times when the first Christians would sit around a fire, talking about Christ, strengthening their faith in Him in mutual love. On Saturday , Fr Andrei led a discussion on the family as a “school of all virtues,” touching upon the widest range of phenomena of daily life of each of us, how they affect our families, and how we can remain Christian in our times. The third day of the conference was held at Holy Virgin Protection Cathedral’s hall, where after Divine Liturgy and lunch, Fr Andrei frankly answered parishioners’ questions. The participants were very grateful to Fr Andrei for his visit, despite his busy schedule and travel from halfway across the globe. God willing, everyone will bring home some words of wisdom. Gratitude was also expressed to His Grace Bishop Longin of Novo-Gracanica and Midwest America for his permission to use his monastery, and the Serbian brothers and sisters for their hospitality. I remember how one of the former seminarians from Jordanville recounted how one of the hierarch of our Church, in his keynote address to the graduating seminarians, called the seminary “a school of Orthodox thought.” Indeed , this is accurate . Pondering this expression, it seems that seminars such as this one are also “schools of Orthodox thought.” We all have never needed “correct thought” as much as we do now.
