Holy Fire to be delivered to Russian churches in London for first time Moscow, April 12, 2017 Photo: s-nbcnews.com      For the first time ever, the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society (IOPS) will deliver the Holy Fire from Jerusalem to Russian parishes in London, head of the IOPS youth department Maria Korovin told RIA-Novosti on Wednesday. The Holy Fire appears annually on Holy Saturday, descending from Heaven to light the candles of the Orthodox Patriarch Jerusalem praying and waiting in the tomb of the Lord, and from there is distributed to churches throughout the Orthodox world. This year the flame will be carried in specially-made lampada-capsules on a direct flight to London, and immediately brought to the Dormition Cathedral of the Sourozh Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, and to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia Cathedral of the Dormition and the Holy Royal Martyrs. “It is gratifying that by the efforts of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society the area of care for Orthodox believers will be expanded this year, now including the British Isles. The Russian diaspora in England is constantly being replenished with young people, which undoubtedly speaks to the preservation and enhancement of the cultural and spiritual foundations of our faith. If before the Holy Fire was brought to Russian benefactors in Belarus, Ukraine, and other CIS states, then now we can proclaim the Paschal joy in European countries: in Great Britain, Serbia, Italy, Latvia, Estonia, Germany, the Czech Republic,” said Korovina. “The Holy Fire will not only unite Jerusalem, London, and Moscow, but will also sanctify special pages in the history of our countries,” she added. The history of the IOPS, celebrating its 135th anniversary this year, is inextricably bound to the British royal family, as Grand Duchess Elizabeth Romanova, the second chairman of the IOPS, was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria.

Flame of faith: Stillwater, OK church welcomes holy fire from Jerusalem Source: Stillwater News Press May 21, 2017 Ukrainian Orthodox worshipers light candles from the Holy Fire brought from Jerusalem in St. Volodymyr Cathedral during the April 15 ceremony of the Holy Fire in Kiev, Ukraine. Photo: AP/Sergei Chuzavkov      Each year, thousands of Christians gather at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem to witness a miracle that sparks a flame of faith they share with believers around the world. The members of St. Nino Equal to the Apostles Orthodox Christian Church in Stillwater are sharing in that miracle this year. It begins in a unique church complex located in the Old City of Jerusalem that surrounds two of the holiest spots in Christianity: Golgotha, the hill where Jesus of Nazareth is said to have been crucified and the rock tomb where he was buried. The site is shared by the Greek Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic, Roman Catholic, Coptic Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox and Syrian Orthodox churches in a sometimes uneasy partnership. The Holy Fire is said to appear miraculously in the tomb of the resurrected Jesus each year on the Saturday before Pascha or Easter, as celebrated according to the Orthodox calendar. The Patriarch of Jerusalem, one of the leaders of the Eastern Orthodox Church, enters the tomb, prays and waits until the Holy Fire manifests itself on the stone where the body of Jesus was wrapped. The faithful light candles from the flame to carry to their homes and churches. They say the flame doesn’t burn when you touch it for about the first 30 minutes and photos taken in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher show smiling people holding their faces and hands in the flame. The flame then begins its journey around the world. Bulgarian Holy Synod to Discuss Choice of Interim Patriarch November 14, 2012 His Holiness Patriarch Maxim of Bulgaria, reposed on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. The The Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church will gather on Wednesday to discuss the objections against the recent appointment of Varna Bishop Kiril as interim Patriarch, reports Novinite.com . At meeting of the Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church on Saturday, November 10, Metropolitan Kiril of Varna and Veliki Preslav received seven out of twelve votes by secret ballot of the attending Metropolitans, making him the interim head of the Church. At the same meeting, which was chaired by Bishop Grigoriy of Veliko Tarnovo, Bishop Kiril was also appointed interim metropolitan of Sophia. In an open letter to the Holy Synod, sent Tuesday and published on the official site of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, the same Bishop Gregoriy announced that he is withdrawing his signatures over the growing criticism against the Church, particularly for violating the Holy Synod’s Code in selecting the interim patriarch and Sofia metropolitan. He writes that he was firmly insisting for his signatures to be deleted and made invalid. Bishop Nikolay of Plovdiv announced Monday his official position on the selection of Kiril. He sent an open letter to the Holy Synod as well, stating he intended to keep silence for 40 days, and he would not be attending the Synod " s meetings. Nikolay also voiced his concern that the election may have been conducted in violation of the codes. The other candidate for the position, vacant after the recent repose of Bulgarian Patriarch Maxim, was Metropolitan Yoaniky of Sliven. Kiril will lead the Bulgarian Orthodox Church for four months and will be instrumental in preparing the convention of a National Church Council to elect a new Patriarch. Bishop Kirill of Varna and Veliki Preslav. Bulgaria " s Patriarch Maxim, who led the Church since 1971, died Tuesday at age 98, and was solemnly buried last Friday. After Maxim " s death, the Synod initially gave the position of Sofia bishop—a position traditionally held by Bulgaria " s Patriarch—to Nikolay. During 2011 and early 2012, there was a controversy (mainly among secular people) in Bulgaria concerning bishop Kiril’s expensive automobile. This incident renewed the debate in secular media about the sources of wealth among senior Bulgarian clergy. In mid-January, Bulgaria " s so-called Files Commission—a panel investigating the Communist era secret files—exposed eleven out of a total of fifteen Bulgarian Metropolitans as having some ties with the secret services. Nikolay is one of the few members of the Holy Synod who have not worked for the former State Security, but he is also one of a younger generation of bishops, and never had to face the reality of a communist regime. 14 ноября 2012 г. ... The Holy Relics of St. Valentine Lie on Lesbos Island Greece, Mytilene, February 14, 2015      The Municipality of Lesbos will commemorate Saint Valentine with a series of events at the Church of Metastasis of Virgin Mary in Mytilene where the holy relics of the saint lie. The Greek Post Office, honoring Saint Valentine and Lesvos where the holy relics are hosted since 1907, issued a series of stamps and numismatic special commemorative envelopes that will travel around the world. A series of events took place yesterday and will continue today. Yesterday, the Municipal Band participated in the procession of the holy relics of the saint, in the market and at the Mytilene waterfront. Today, Saturday, February 14, at the Municipal Theatre of Mytilene at 7:30 p.m., there will be love song concert with the participation of famous artists. Saint Valentine is not mentioned anywhere in the Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendar. The Greek Orthodox Church suggests to lovers to celebrate their love the day before, on February 13, in memory of Saints Aquila and Priscilla. How the bones of Saint Valentine culminated in Greece Saint Priscilla is somehow connected with Saint Valentine as the beheaded body of Valentine was buried in the catacomb of the church honoring Saint Priscilla in the year 270. The Pope Saint Gelasius sanctified Valentine in 496 and his martyrdom was particularly respected and honored by the Roman Catholic Church. The eternal repose of the saint was disrupted in 1815, when the Pope donated his relics to a noble Italian priest. However, in 1907 the relics of Saint Valentine somehow ended up in Mytilene, at the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady. It seems that after the death of the Italian priest, one of his descendants inherited the holy relics and migrated to the island of Lesbos. At the time, the island had a thriving community of western-European Catholic Christians. The relics of Saint Valentine remained there until 1990, when they were transferred to Athens, in the church of Saints Francis and Clara of the Italian community. In 2014, they were transferred to Mytilene again. GreekReporter.com 17 февраля 2015 г. Jerusalem clerics slam " brutal " police acts at Easter/Православие.Ru Jerusalem clerics slam " brutal " police acts at Easter Jerusalem, May 12, 2013 Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Metropolitan Theophilos (C) leads Easter service in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem " s Old City May 5, 2013. REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun The heads of Jerusalem " s Orthodox churches on Sunday spoke out against the " brutal treatment " meted out by Israeli police to both priests and pilgrims during an ancient Easter ritual in the Old City. The incident occurred during the centuries-old sacred Holy Fire rite which takes place the day before Easter in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, with police allegedly hitting a priest and several Egyptian diplomats. It sparked a diplomatic incident with Cairo which promptly summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest, with Israel " s deputy foreign minister confirming he had apologised. " We, the Heads of Churches in Jerusalem, watched with sorrowful hearts the horrific scenes of the brutal treatment of our clergy, people, and pilgrims in the Old City of Jerusalem during Holy Saturday, " said a statement from the Orthodox patriarchs and church leaders. " A day of joy and celebration was turned to great sorrow and pain for some of our faithful because they were ill-treated by some Israeli policemen who were present around the gates of the Old City and passages that lead to the Holy Sepulchre. " Footage posted on the Internet showed police manhandling a Coptic priest, with one officer locking the priest " s head in his arm. Police said they had opened an investigation. Although the church leaders acknowledged the need for police to keep order among the thousands of pilgrims and visitors who flock to the annual ceremony, they accused police of " indiscriminately and brutally " beating people. " It is not acceptable that under pretext of security and order, our clergy and people are indiscriminately and brutally beaten, and prevented from entering their churches, monasteries and convents. " The statement called on the Israeli police and the interior ministry " to seriously consider our complaints, to hold responsibility and to condemn all acts of violence against our faithful and the clergy who were ill-treated by the police. " Among the signatories were Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III and Latin Patriarch Fuad Twal, as well as the leaders of all the other Orthodox churches in Jerusalem. Journeying Up the Mountain: A Sacred Choral Music Workshop with Maestro Vladimir Gorbik/Православие.Ru Journeying Up the Mountain: A Sacred Choral Music Workshop with Maestro Vladimir Gorbik An Interview with Isaac Crabtree Jesse Dominick , Isaac Crabtree On September 27 we posted an interview with Benedict Sheehan, choirmaster at St. Tikhon " s Monastery and Seminary in Pennsylvania, in which he shared his thoughts on the state of Church music in America and about the various projects with which he is involved. One of those projects is the Patriarch Tikhon Russian-American Music Institute (PaTRAM) which is dedicated to promoting high-quality Church singing, through private instructions and also through Master Classes throughout America. September 2 —6 the institute offered its first Master Class in Russia, at the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra Podvoriye in Moscow, where Institute co-founder Maestro Vladimir Gorbik, of whom Benedict spoke, is choirmaster. Singers from America, Canada, and Russia came together for an intensive workshop in Slavonic choral music, as well as several pilgrimage-outings, under the direction of Maestro Gorbik. We spoke with Isaac Crabtree of St. John Chrysostom Orthodox Church in House Springs, MO, one of the thirty-five participants in the Master Class, about the experience. His thoughts and reflections are a testament to the work of PaTRAM and give us insight into the depth of the Orthodox choral tradition, and what can be accomplished both technically and spiritually when we give our best effort and our first fruits to the Lord. —Give us a run-down of the daily schedule of the conference. —This was a four-day Master Class, Wednesday—Saturday, that also included several planned excursions to holy places. Our final practice was on Saturday afternoon and we sang the Vigil at the Podvoriye Saturday evening, and the Divine Liturgy on Sunday. Each day was scheduled differently, but all were a combination of rehearsals or divine services and either planned or informal excursions.

New Orthodox church consecrated in New York New York City, October 6, 2014      On Saturday, October 4, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York (the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia) consecrated the new Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist in New York (Brooklyn, Sheepshead Bay). It can be said that for today this is one of the largest Orthodox churches in New York City and is inferior only to the St. Nicholas Cathedral on Manhattan (belonging to the Moscow Patriarchate) in respect of capacity and adornments. Most likely, only the Church of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia on 18th Avenue (the first of four Orthodox churches now active in this NY borough) can rival the newly consecrated church.      The new Church of St. John the Baptist now occupies the building of a former Methodist church; only a small, splendid dome and a distinctive cross above the entrance indicate that this is an Orthodox church. One can understand the joy of the church Rector Archpriest Alexander Belya, the parish council and all the parishioners, who over several years had to move from one rented premise of Brooklyn to another. Within the shortest possible space of time the church was repaired by the Kadar Elite Construction company, led by Michael Kadar. Benefactors and volunteers from among the parishioners actively helped in arranging the church. On Friday evening trowel men were still working here, and on Saturday morning the church was already receiving its parishioners and clergymen from neighboring communities, arriving to the celebration.      Clergy of the Cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God “Of the Sign”, of the Church of St. John the Baptist, the Church of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia, the Church of the Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “The Inexhaustible Cup” as well as priests and deacons of other parishes of the diocese concelebrated with Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York at the Divine Liturgy and the church consecration. After the service the constructioin company director Michael Kadar and the churchwarden of the St. John the Baptist’s Church John (Ivan) Belya were presented with the highest award of the ROCOR—the Synodal Order of the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God, 3rd Class. The active volunteer builders received diocesan diplomas. Pravoslavie.ru 6 октября 2014 г. President joins Orthodox at Holy Mount of Grabarka August 20, 2014    President Komorowski joined around 5,000 Orthodox Christians from Poland and abroad at the Holy Mount of Grabarka near Siemiatycze, eastern Poland, for the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. President Komorowski and First Lady Anna plant Oak of Freedom in Grabarka: photo - PAP/Artur Reszko      The morning liturgy, Tuesday, officiated by Metropolitan Sawa, leader of the Orthodox Church in Poland, was followed by the traditional blessing of fruit brought by the faithful. The Transfiguration, celebrated in Poland on 16 August, is numbered among the twelve Great Feasts in the Orthodox Christian calender. Metropolitan Sawa thanked Bronislaw Komorowski and First Lady Anna for their participation, describing it as proof that the head of state is “a president of all citizens of our homeland, irrespective of their creed or nationality”. The leader of Polish Orthodox Christians also spoke of an ever-creeping secularization as contributing to what he termed as “making a negative use of freedom” ‘This is a source of our concern and this is why we constantly remind of the great importance of Christian values which serve a revival or spirituality and Christian hope,” he said. President Komorowski, who had taken part in the ceremony the Holy Mount of Grabarka - which houses the most important Orthodox sanctuary in Poland, three years ago - said that it is a place “where one finds it easier not only to pray but also to act for the cause of unity”. In his speech, he stressed the role of strong communities – at family, parish and state level – in national life. After the service President Komorowski and Metropolitan Sawa planted an Oak of Freedom to mark the 25th anniversary of the parliamentary elections which began the country’s transition to democracy in 1989. One of the focal points of this year’s celebration at Grabarka is the presence of the relic of St. Mary Magdalene – the saint’s hand which has arrived from is the most sacred treasure of Simonopetra Monastery on Mount Athos in Greece, where it is kept as the most sacred treasure. The relic was first displayed last Saturday at the St. Mary Magdalene Orthodox Cathedral in Warsaw. From Grabarka it will be taken to several Polish Orthodox Christian centres. According to the Orthodox Church, there are up to half a million Orthodox Christians in Poland: in the latest national census in Poland, however, only 156,000 people declared themselves members of that faith. 23 августа 2014 г.
