Archive The 60th anniversary of the Russian Orthodox Church representation celebrated in Damascus 19 November 2018 year 10:33 On November 18, 2018, festive events to mark the 60 th anniversary of the Damascus Representation of the Russian Orthodox Church were held in the Syrian capital city. The Divine Liturgy at the Representation’s church of the Holy Martyr Ignatius the God-Bearer was celebrated by His Holiness John X, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East. He was assisted by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relations (DECR), Metropolitans George of Homs, Basil of Akkar, Nicholas of Hama; Niphon of Philippople, representative of the Patriarch of Antioch to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia; Athanasius of Latakia; as well as several bishops and clergy of the Patriarchate of Antioch. Among the concelebrants were also the rector of the ROC Damascus Representation Archimandrite Philip (Vasiltsev), and the representative of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia to the Patriarch of Antioch Hegumen Arseny (Sokolov), and the DECR secretary for inter-Christian relations Hieromonk Stephan (Igumnov).  Present at the service were also Cardinal Marion Zenari, nuncio of the Holy See in Syria; members of the delegation of the Interreligious Working Group of the Presidential Council for Cooperation with Religious Organizations, and Russian diplomats. In his homily after the liturgy, His Beatitude John X pointed to the significant role played by the ROC Damascus Representation, which, just as the Moscow Representation of the Church of Antioch, serves as an important connecting link between the two Churches. The DECR Chairman Metropolitan Hilarion, in his address, said: ‘Your Holiness, Your Eminences and Graces, dear Fathers, Brothers and Sisters! Let me greet you, Your Beatitude, and your whole God-saved flock on behalf of His Holiness Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. His Holiness Kirill visited Syria and Lebanon at the moment when military actions began in the Syrian land. During the whole time as these hostilities continued and terrorists outraged in the Syrian land, the Russian Orthodox Church lifted up ardent prayers for the restoration of peace and harmony in Syria. Immediately after his return from Syria, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill appealed to President Vladimir Putin to make the protection of persecuted Christians in Syria and other countries in the Middle East one of the main vectors of Russia’s foreign policy. We can see that Russia has made a decisive contribution to the defeat of terrorists in the blessed Syrian land, and today we thank God for the fact that these Satan’s servants are driven away and the country has begun to be restored, although there is still much to be done.

He had a comparatively peaceful reign for almost 10 years, and during this period considerably advanced the unification of Norway. Olaf " s work of unification assumed concrete form as territorial dominion over a kingdom which extended from Gautelven in the south up to Finnmark in the north, from the Vesterhav islands in the west to the forests toward the realm of the Swedes in the east. Olaf was the first high king who secured real control over the inland areas of Trondelag and Opplandene. Moreover, he gained a foothold for the Norwegian national kingdom on the Orkney Islands and Hjaltland. Olaf also laid the foundation for nationwide local government and introduced a certain division of labour among the royal housecarls. He installed sheriffs recruited from the nobility and the landed gentry throughout the country and tried by means of his year-men to keep control of the political activities of the sheriffs. According to Snorre a division of labour seems to have occurred in the King " s household into actual housecarls (military functions), guests (police functions), house chaplains, and churls (duties within the palace). Moreover, several titles of the masters of the King " s court are known from this time: standard-bearer, King " s Marshal, House Bishop. With the aid of his English missionaries he succeeded in making Norway Christian. At the meeting of the Ting (Parliament) at Moster, Bomlo in Sunnhordland (1024), Norway acquired a nationwide ecclesiastical organisation with churches and priests, a Christian legal system and a first organisation of the Church " s finances. Gwyn Jones writes: «The Christian law formulated at Moster was of prime authority; it was read out at the different Things, and there are confirmatory references to it in the oldest Gulathing Law.» The king established peace and security for his people, remaking old laws and insisting on their execution, unaffected by bribes or threats. He built many churches, including one dedicated to St. Clement at the capital, Nidaros (Trondheim). All other faiths except Christianity were outlawed.

2015: a missionary year in review Source: Orthodox Missionary Fraternity January 22, 2016 January 2015 The feasts of the twelve days were celebrated throughout the world. On January 11, the Blessing of the Waters ceremony was conducted at the pier of Hong Kong. In Sierra Leone, the celebrations were restrained because of prohibitions enacted for the prevention of Ebola contamination, while the Orthodox Mission continued distributing food and protective materials. In Cambodia, most of the faithful gathered at their parishes and celebrated alone, since there are not enough priests for the five parishes operating in the country. In Sangmelima, Cameroon, the Orthodox believers celebrated for the first time at St. Charalambos Church , constructed with funds from our Fraternity. Do we not really prefer the worthless and quickly fleeting goods of this world to those of eternity? Do we really place traversing the path He pointed out to us as the goal of our lives? Do we really always remember Christ’s words: I am the way, the truth, and the life [John 14:6]? For the holy martyr and Trophy-Bearer George, He was truly the Path and the Life; he neither followed any other path, nor did he wish to know of any other. He was not frightened by threats or fears, boldly following the way of Christ. Therefore, we bow down before all the martyrs, and especially such great ones as George the Trophy-Bearer, commending them by our ardent love. They strengthen our faith and love by their miracles, for the majority of them work miracles. You will know from your pastors about the miracle performed three times by the Great-Martyr George, freeing from bondage the youth who were languishing and suffering in captivity. You will remember how, as they were thinking about their native home and the Great-Martyr’s feast day while they were supposed to be serving food or wine to their masters, George the Trophy-Bearer suddenly carried them away on a white horse, transporting them in an instant to the home of their parents, who were then celebrating the memory of the Great-Martyr. Do not such miracles serve as a great and powerful fortification of your faith in that which the Lord Jesus Christ said? After all, He said that those who believed in Him could perform not only such miracles as did He, but even greater ones. The martyrs accomplished great deeds, confirming the truth of these words of Christ. Let us then be ashamed of our cowardice in the face of the slightest fear presented to us by our imaginations. Let us love the Lord Jesus Christ and His martyrs with all our hearts, and especially the Holy Great-Martyr George the Trophy-Bearer, whose memory we celebrate today. Amen. In reply, St. George only laughed at this pledge; he, of course, rejected even the first place in glory and honor after the Roman Emperor, for his fidelity to Christ was firmer than adamant and His love for Him was boundless. You have heard more than once from your pastors about the terrible torments the holy Trophy-Bearer George underwent for Christ. I will not enlarge on them. You yourselves will remember well how he was tortured for days on end with his legs fixed in stocks, with an enormous stone placed on his chest that nearly crushed him; you will remember how he was broken on the wheel, being tied to an enormous wheel under which a plank with nails and blades was placed, which cut and tore his holy body; how iron boots with sharp nails inside were placed on him, and how he was driven to run through the streets of the city in these boots; how he was thrown into a pit filled with quicklime, filled from the top with lime. He was supposed to have been burned in the lime; but when, three days later, Diocletian ordered a report on how St. George had been burned, the messengers returned to report to him that George was unharmed. When the Great-Martyr was brought alive before Diocletian, the latter could not believe his eyes. The Great-Martyr George’s exploit was a difficult one. The good favor of the Lord Jesus Christ towards him for this great exploit was shown by how He Himself came to him in prison, encouraging and blessing him for the completion of his martyrdom. George the Trophy-Bearer feared nothing. But do we, weak and worthless Christians, face in like manner that which, in whatever small and distant a measure, threatens us with some difficulty? Did it not happen quite recently that there were hundreds of thousands of people among us that easily renounced faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, declaring in questionnaires that they were unbelievers, fearing something that did not in any way threaten them? They were not threatened in any way; they were required only to write in the questionnaire whether they believed or did not believe. And this was enough for them to commit the terribly grave sin of denying the Lord Jesus Christ, forgetting His dread words: But whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father Which is in heaven (Matthew 10:33).

—Sometimes we are taken aback by the prefix “New”. It would seem that saints are saints throughout all times, and now we have something new. How should we relate to this “something new”? —As to a great joy, an eternally new and fresh Christian happiness. I will explain. Of course this has its own specific character. The podvig of the New Martyrs was carried out very recently, and these saints are essentially our own contemporaries. Our association with them, our reception of their lives, their service to the Church is not the same as for those saints of deep antiquity, the martyrs of the first centuries, like Great Martyr George " > St. George the Trophy-Bearer , Greatmartyr and Healer Panteleimon The Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon was born in the city of Nicomedia into the family of the illustrious pagan Eustorgius, and he was named Pantoleon. His mother St Euboula (March 30) was a Christian. She wanted to raise her son in the Christian Faith, but she died when the future martyr was just a young child. His father sent Pantoleon to a pagan school, after which the young man studied medicine at Nicomedia under the renowned physician Euphrosynus. " > St. Panteliemon , Great Martyr Demetrios of Thessalonka Saint Demetrios, the Great Martyr and Myhrr-Gusher, was born in Thessalonica in 260 A.D. His parents were illustrious people and along with the transitory glory which Demetrios had from his family, he was adorned with imperishable virtues: with prudence, sweetness, humility, justice, and with every noble comeliness of the soul. " > St. Demitrios of Thessalonica , and other great pleasers of God. There are already many magnificent churches built in their names, beautiful icons of them have been painted, and full services have been written to them. There are millennia of traditions connected with our veneration of them. We are now at the very beginning of a very important path of discovery of this spiritual treasure, which has a unique power. And it must be said that the hierarchy of our Church continually reminds us that we need to pay particular attention to the task of achieving a meaningful veneration of the New Martyrs.
