Appeal of Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna to Help Build a Monument to Holy Martyr Patriarch Germogen in Moscow Madrid, Spain, January 4, 2012 Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna Romanova, claimant to the headship of the Imperial Family of Russia and pretender to the titles Empress and Autocrat of All the Russias, has posted an appeal for the support of a monument to Martyr Patriarch Germogen in Moscow: Dear Compatriots! March 1, (February 17 o.s.), 2012, marks the 400th anniversary of the martyric death of the great Church hierarch and patriot of the Russian Land, His Holiness Patriarch Germogen. The eminent hierarch, missionary and writer Hierarch Germogen was elected to the Patriarchal service in the midst of the Time of Troubles of the 17th century. During these terrible years, his fervent faith, indomitable will and staunch adherence to the principle of law and historic statehood restored and bolstered the spirit of our ancestors. Patriarch Germogen showed them the correct path of emerging from the grave crisis of the time and exhibited his personal bravery and selflessness. Although he was not destined to survive until the emancipation of the Homeland and the triumph of his ideals at the Great Pomestny Church and Zemsky Sobor of 1613, it is he who was the main leader, source of inspiration and hero of the peoples’ victory over the Time of Troubles. The foreign occupiers and internal traitors who subjected the Patriarch to suffering and death from starvation, hoped in this way to deprive the Church of its leader and sap the effort for national freedom. In reality, however, having given his earthly life for his neighbors, Germogen remains forever with his people, becoming their Heavenly intercessor, representative of Russia before God. The Church glorified Holy Martyr Germogen among the host of saints during the 300th-anniversary celebrations of Our Royal Dynasty during the reign of Holy Emperor Nicholas II the Passion-Bearer. It was with great joy that I learned that a group of social organizations took the initiative of building a monument to Patriarch Germogen in Red Square in Moscow on donations from the Russian people, and this effort was given the blessing of the Successor to St Germogen’s Patriarchal Throne, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

Edmund fought against them and the Danes won the victory, they slew the king and took over the entire kingdom and destroyed all its monasteries.” He is also mentioned in the Life of Alfred the Great, written nearly at the same time by Bishop Asser, which reads that St. Edmund fought side by side with Alfred and was finally killed in battle. The first Life of Edmund was compiled by the Martyr Abbo of Fleury (c. 945-1004: feast: November 13) in about 986. Abbo spent two years (985-987) in England at the monastery in Ramsey, to which he had been invited. While he was in England, the saintly Archbishop Dunstan of Canterbury related to him the story of Edmund. Dunstan, a great authority, heard this story as a young man from King Athelstan, who had heard it from the old, personal sword-bearer of St. Edmund. The Latin Life of Abbo was translated several years later into old English by the learned English Abbot Aelfric of Eynsham (c.955-c.1020). This life survives to this day. There are also later and less reliable versions of life of St. Edmund, composed by Geoffrey of Wells in the twelfth century, Monk Robert Manning early in the fourteenth century, the monk and poet John Lydgate of Bury St. Edmunds (c.1370-c.1450), and others. Bury St. Edmunds Abbey ruins, Suffolk      St. Edmund, whose name means “blessed protection”, was probably born in 841. He lived during one of the most troubled periods of early English history, when hordes of Danish pirates were devastating English kingdoms one after another, burning churches and monasteries, ravaging them, murdering Christians and all inhabitants. Such great monasteries as Coldingham, Wearmouth, Jarrow, Tynemouth, Whitby, Lindisfarne, Crowland, Bardney, Peterborough, Thorney, Ramsey, Soham, Barking, Chertsey and Reculver fell victim to the blood-thirsty Vikings at that time. According to tradition, Edmund was called to the throne of East Anglia by the kingdom’s people in this critical period. He landed from exile (according to one of the versions of his life) at St.

Preparations begin for 800th anniversary of St. Alexander Nevsky Moscow, March 14, 2017 Photo: RIA-Novosti      His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky will participate in an upcoming meeting at Christ the Savior Cathedra’s hall of Church councils dedicated to preparing the events surrounding the 800th anniversary of the birth of the Holy Prince St. Alexander Nevsky, which will be celebrated in 2021. According to RIA-Novosti , the session will also be attended by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the St. Andrew Foundation and the Center for National Glory Vladimir Yakunin, the rector of the Moscow State Conservatory Alexander Sokolov, rector of the Moscow Architectural Institute Dmitry Shvidkovskii, and the president’s assistant Andrei Fursenko. “The Church attaches special importance to the person of Alexander Nevsky as an historical figure and as a saint of the Russian Church, and one of the most beloved and revered amongst our people. The celebration of his jubilee, the preparations for which have already begun, will undoubtedly be a very important milestone for both the state and Church in the formation of the national consciousness of our compatriots,” stated the patriarch’s press secretary Fr. Alexander Volkov. Since December 2006 the Moscow Patriarchate and St. Andrew’s Foundation have ran the “Alexander Nevsky” program, which has brought the holy prince’s relics to cities of Russia, Latvia, Belarus, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, built temples in his honor, and arranged “Alexander Days” in many regions throughout Russia. Prince Alexander Yaroslavovich was born in 1221, and at different times of his life bore the titles Prince of Novgorod, Prince of Kiev, and later Grand Prince of Vladimir. His major military victory was won in his youth. He later became more famous as a politician and diplomat. St. Alexander was canonized by the Church as a Right-Believing monarch, glorified for his righteous life, but not becoming a martyr or passion-bearer. The Grand Prince spread Christianity in the northern lands of Pomerania and in the Golden Horde, and received the monastic schema before he died. His veneration began immediately after his death, and in 1724 his relics were festively relocated to St. Petersburg, to the St. Alexander Nevsky Lavra, by order of Tsar Peter I.

Troparion, in Tone V Desiring the supernal glory of God, thou didst toil for Him to the end of thine earthly life; and, having laboured well, thou didst increase the talant He entrusted to thy care, being faithful to Him even to the shedding of thy blood. Wherefore, as a martyr thou hast received a crown for thy pangs from the right hand of Christ our God, Whom do thou earnestly entreat, that we be saved who hymn thee, O glorious King Olav. At Matins At God is the Lord, the troparion of the saint, twice; Glory, Now & ever: Theotokion. Canon of the saint, with 4 troparia, the acrostic whereof is Save thy people, eternal king of Norway, in Tone V Ode I Irmos: Bringing battles to nought with His upraised arm, Christ overthrow horse and rider in the Red Sea, and save Israel, who singeth a hymn of victory. Save Thy people, the New Israel, O Christ mighty in battles, that with Thy holy one, the right-believing passion-bearer Olav, we may sing to Thee a hymn of victory. As one mighty, the holy Olav called his people to Christ, lifting up the precious Cross as a battle-standard; and he led them boldly to salvation, singing a hymn of victory. Valiant and brave, the wondrous Olav defended the Faith against the heathen foe, prevailing over them in battle, and singing unto Christ our God a hymn of victory. Theotokion: Eden " s delights did we forfeit when Adam, our first father, ate the fruit of disobedience, O all-pure Virgin; but through thy humble obedience we have regained what was lost. Ode III Irmos: God is King over the nations. God sitteth on His holy throne. And with understanding we sing unto Him as King and God. The all-powerful God, Who is King of all, set the holy Olav over Norway, that his nation might sing unto Christ with understanding. Heathen idols didst thou overturn and cast into the flames, O saint, for thou didst understand them to be demonic snares. Ye people of Norway, exalt the martyred King Olav with hymns of praise, singing with understanding unto God, the King of kings!

Tweet Нравится Holy Royal Martyr Mirdat, King of Kartli (†410) Memory 8 (21) July King Mirdat (408–410), the son of Varaz-Bakur, was the first martyred king of Georgia. He was raised by his maternal grandfather, King Trdat. The faithful grandfather taught the future king to love God and his nation, and the young prince mindfully preserved his grandfather’s wisdom throughout his life. Mirdat was endowed with the greatest of a nobleman’s virtues: wisdom, discretion, physical prowess, fearlessness, valor, and courage. He liberated Klarjeti from the Byzantines, abolished the tribute system (by which Georgia was required to pay taxes to Persia, and prepared for war against the Persians. The Persian king gathered an enormous army to punish the Georgian nation, and King Mirdat courageously marched toward Gardabani (in eastern Georgia with his much smaller army. But the selflessness and bravery of the Georgian soldiers were no match for the multitude of Persian warriors. The Georgians suffered defeat, and the Persian conquerors captured the young king. The Persian king demanded that Mirdat renounce the Christian Faith, but he was firmly rebuffed. Neither intimidation nor fear of persecution would break the will of the king. After torturing him for his love of Christ, the Persians bound him in chains, tormented him almost to death, and cast him into prison, where he gave up his soul to the Lord. The martyrdom of King Mirdat took place at the beginning of the 5th century, in the year 410. O Holy Martyr Mirdat, entreat Christ God to save our souls! St. Giorgi the Recluse copied Davit Mtbevari’s translations of the Life of Martha (the mother of Simeon of the Wonderful Mountain and the Life of St. Barlaam (of the Syro-Caucasus).
