Japanese Orthodox clergy unharmed, Russian clergy and nuns not evacuating March 17, 2011 Orthodox Cathedral in Sendai Priest of the Japanese Autonomous Orthodox Church Nicholai Dimitriev, who serves in the city of Hakodate, has reported that contact has now been made with all the Orthodox priests in the country. All are unharmed, reports the official website of the Moscow Patriarchate, citing the journal Foma. Fr. Vasily Taguchi, earlier missing, made contact with other clergy on Thursday morning. According to Fr. Nicholai, there are has been no serious damage to the churches in Tokyo and Hakodate, while the churches of Yamada and Sakari were completely destroyed. " In Sendai, where the second hierarchical cathedra is located, the situation is complicated—the entire coastal zone was destroyed. Nevertheless, the church here miraculously remained unharmed, and Bishop Seraphim and his flock are well, " noted Fr. Nicholai. In the Tokyo cathedral, some windows were shattered, and in the Hakodate church, the iconostasis has cracked. Fr. Nicholai said that the faithful there need Bibles, prayer books, and crucifixes, which they lost together with their homes. The clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church in Japan will continue to serve there. " We will continue serving in Tokyo. All is up to God " s will, " announced the rector of the Russian Orthodox Church in Japan, Archpriest Nicholai Katsiuban to the Khabarovsk diocesan press service. The service also reported that the two sisters of the St. Sophia women " s monastery in Tiba prefecture, Mother Ksenia and Mother Magdalena, also do not intend to evacuate. " We will not leave the monastery. We are at our post, " they told diocesan representatives over the phone. The nuns have learned the Japanese language, and read the main daily prayers in Japanese. For this festive day, at the request of the Archbishop Justinian and the blessing of the Bishop Michael of New York and New Jersey, after decades of absence, the banner of the Brotherhood of the Nativity of the Mother of God was returned to the cathedral. The Archbishop learned about existence of this banner bearing an icon of the Nativity of the Mother of God from photographs taken in the early 20th century depicting Bishop Tikhon (Belavin) of the North America, the future Patriarchof Moscow and All Russia and builder of the St. Nicholas Cathedral in New York, Hieromartyr Alexander Hotovitzky, the builder of the cathedral in Chicago, Hieromartyr Archpriest John Kochurov, and holy righteous Archpriest Alexis Toth, who returned hundreds of Uniates to the bosom of the Orthodox Church in the United States. In this photo, clergy members of the Brotherhood of the Nativity of the Mother of God are pictured along with a banner, on which you can see the following words: " 1893. Holy Mother of God, save our brotherhood! " Having been invited last year to visit the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God in New Jersey, Orthodox Church in America, Archbishop Justinian saw the banner on the right side of the iconostasis on the wall. A year later, after consultations and preparatory work, rector Archpriest John Prokopchuk, with the blessing of Bishop Michael, returned the banner to the St. Nicholas Cathedral. According to Fr. John, neither he nor his congregation knew about the banner’s history, and they believed that it had been donated to the church by an emigrant who brought it from Russia. В знак признательности за хранение святыни Богородицерождественскому храму передали образ прп.Серафима Саровского In recognition of appreciation for the careful preservation of this holy relic as well as of their brotherly love, Archbishop Justinian presented the congregation of the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God with an icon of St. Seraphim of Sarov. The banner was placed before the iconostasis of the side altar dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God as the troparion and magnification were sung, after which all had the opportunity to venerate.

St. Ephraim the Bishop of Pereyaslavl, Kiev Caves, Far Caves Commemorated on January 28 Photo: Days.Pravoslavie.Ru Saint Ephraim of the Caves, Bishop of Pereyaslavl, before his tonsure into monasticism, was treasurer and steward of household affairs at the court of the Kiev Great Prince Izyaslav (Demetrius) Yaroslavich (1054-1068). Weighed down by this noisy and bustling life and wishing to become a monk, he was accepted by Saint Anthony of the Kiev Caves and was tonsured by Saint Nikon (March 23). The enraged prince demanded that Ephraim return, threatening to lock him up in prison and to destroy the Monastery of the Caves. Saint Anthony and the brethren left the monastery and decided to go to another place. Izyaslav, however, feared the wrath of God. He took his wife’s advice and withdrew his forces from the monastery in disgrace. Saint Ephraim wished to go on pilgrimage to the holy places abroad. With the blessing of Saint Anthony, he journeyed to Constantinople and settled there in one of the monasteries. While in Constantinople, Saint Ephraim made a copy of the Studite monastic Rule, and took it to Kiev at the request of Saint Theodosius. As soon as he received the Rule, Saint Theodosius implemented it in his monastery. After the year 1072 Ephraim was made bishop in Pereyaslavl, with the title of Metropolitan. He adorned Pereyaslavl with many beautiful churches and public buildings, and he built stone walls around the city in the Greek manner. He built free hospices for the poor and travelers, and constructed several public bath-houses. In the year 1091, Saint Ephraim participated in the opening and solemn transfer of the relics of Saint Theodosius. A Life of Saint Ephraim existed in former times, but it has not survived. We find an account of him both in the Life of Saint Theodosius, and in the Russian Chronicles. A tale and encomium for Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker is ascribed to Saint Ephraim. Saint Ephraim died in the year 1098. He was buried in the Antoniev (Far) Caves of the Kiev Caves monastery. His memory is also celebrated on September 28 and on the second Sunday of Great Lent. Tweet Нравится Hieromartyr Isidore and 72 Others at Yuriev, Estonia Commemorated on January 8 Photo: http://days.pravoslavie.ru/ Saint Isidore was priest of Saint Nicholas church in the city of Yuriev (Derpto, at present Taru in Estonia). According to the terms of a treaty concluded in 1463 between the Moscow Great Prince Ivan III and the Livonian knights, the latter were obligated to extend every protection to the Orthodox at Derpto. But the Livonian knights (who were German Catholics) broke the treaty and tried to force the Orthodox to become Roman Catholics. The priest Isidore bravely stood forth in defense of Orthodoxy, preferring to accept a martyr’s crown rather than submit to the Catholics. The Latin bishop and the Roman Catholic nobles of Yuriev had been told that Saint Isidore and the Orthodox population of the city had spoken against the faith and customs of the Germans. When Saint Isidore and seventy-two of his parishioners went to bless the waters of the River Omovzha (or Emaiyga, now Emajogi) for the Feast of Theophany, they were arrested and brought before the Latin bishop Andrew and the civil judges of the city. Pressure was brought on them to convert to Catholicism, but the saint and his flock refused to renounce Christ or the Orthodox Faith. Enraged by this, the authorities had them thrown into prison. Photo: http://days.pravoslavie.ru/ Saint Isidore encouraged his flock to prepare themselves for death, and not to fear torture. He partook of the reserved Gifts he carried with him, then communed all the men, women, and children with the Holy and Life-Giving Mysteries of Christ. Then the bishop and the judges summoned the Orthodox to appear before them once more, demanding that they convert to Catholicism. When they refused to do so, they were dragged back to the river and pushed through the hole in the ice that they had cut to bless the water. So they all suffered and died for Christ, Who bestowed on them crowns of unfading glory. During the spring floods, the incorrupt bodies of the holy martyrs, including the fully-vested body of the hieromartyr Isidore, were found by Russian merchants journeying along the river bank. They buried the saints around the church of Saint Nicholas. Although people began to venerate these saints shortly after their death, they were not officially glorified by the Church until 1897. Addressing the Finnish delegation, Bishop Seraphim spoke about the long tradition of relationships between the Diocese of St. Petersburg and St. Petersburg theological schools with the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Finland, also through the dialogue, which has lasted for almost 50 years. Although there were some difficulties a few years ago, he said, now we can resume common theological discussions. He referred to the 2016 ELCF Bishops’ Assembly’s confirmation that the Finnish Lutherans uphold the traditional biblical understanding of marriage as a turning point in the resumption of the relationships. In his speech of greeting Bishop Seppo Häkkinen reminded the gathering of the prehistory of the dialogue pointing to the decisive role played in its organization by the late Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov) of Leningrad and NObgorod and the late Archbishop Martti Simojoki of Turku and Finland. After that reports were made on the present situation in the Russian Orthodox Church and the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Finland. These reports were followed by a discussion on the possible themes of the reviving theological dialogue. It was agreed to hold the next session in 2020 and combine the theological discussion with events to mark the 50th anniversary of this dialogue. The results of this dialogue will be presented for adoption to the supreme authorities of the two Churches. On June 11, the guests from Finland visited the St. Alexander Nevsky Laura of the Holy Trinity and the St. Nicholas Cemetery to bow at the grave of one of the founders of the dialogue, Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov) of Leningrad and Novgorod. According to His Holiness, “the remains are encrypted” and none of the experts doing the tests know in which vessel the remains are located. “I have a list which was made in the presence of other people, so we are aware which vessels contain which specific remains,” His Holiness Patriarch Kirill added, noting that the measures taken will enable us “to trust this examination.” “I thank you for your attention to this matter,” His Holiness said, addressing the guest. “Thank you for your love for our common motherland, for maintaining the wonderful traditions of the Romanov Family, and for participating in bringing the remains of both Maria Feodorovna and Nicholas Nikolaevich.” The ashes of Empress Maria Feodorovna, spouse of Emperor Alexander III, were brought from Denmark to Russia and reburied in September 2006. The litia before the burial of the empress’ remains at the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul (“Petropavlovsky”) in St. Petersburg was celebrated by the ever-memorable Patriarch Alexis II. The ceremony of reburying of the ashes of Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich the Younger, grandson of Emperor Nicholas I, the Supreme Commander of all land and naval forces of the Russian Empire at the beginning of the First World War, took place on April 30, 2015, at the Common Military Cemetery of Moscow with the participation of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill. “Through your labors history is being united. In this the uniqueness of your personality and that of the House of Romanov is revealed. Those living are uniting that part of our national history which was torn apart by the tragic events early in the twentieth century in their family tradition,” His Holiness said in conclusion. Bishop Tihon of Yegoryevsk, Chairman of the Patriarchal Council for Culture and Abbot of Moscow Sretensky Stavropegic Monastery, along with the wife of Prince Dimitri Romanovich Princess Dorrit Romanov took part in the meeting.
