Passion-Bearer Gleb, in Holy Baptism David      The Holy Prince Gleb, in Holy Baptism David, was one of the first Russian martyrs called “Passion-Bearers.” He suffered together with his brother Prince Boris (Roman in Holy Baptism). After the murder of St Boris, Svyatopolk the Accursed sent to his younger brother Prince Gleb a messenger with false information about their father, Great Prince Vladimir, who had died from illness, thereby using deceit to murder another possible claimant to the Kievan throne. The deceived Prince Gleb hastened off to Kiev with a small company. His apprehensive brother Yaroslav, having caught up with him at Smolensk, was unable to delay the saint, who did not suspect such wickedness on the part of his brother Svyatopolk. Not far from Smolensk the assassins came upon the boat of St Gleb, who made no resistance, but asked meekly that they should spare him because of his young age. At the command of the murderers Gleb’s cook slit his throat. The body of the prince was buried in a desolate place not far from Smolensk, “between two tree-trunks,” i.e., in a simple wooden coffin (+1015). In the year 1019-1020 his brother Yaroslav found the grave of St Gleb. The body, being incorrupt, was transferred to Vyshgorod near Kiev and buried beside holy Prince Boris. Later on, the relics of the brothers were transferred (May 2) into the church of St Basil the Great, and there at the crypts of these holy Passion-Bearers many miracles were worked. Metropolitan John of Kiev compiled a service to the Passion-Bearer princes and also established a feastday for them together on July 24, which dates from the first half of the eleventh century. The Russian Church from of old has venerated these brothers, who unceasingly have rendered prayerful assistance to their native land, particularly in years of grievous tribulation. Thus, just before the Battle of the Neva in 1240, the Passion-Bearers Boris and Gleb appeared in a vision to one of the soldiers of holy Prince Alexander Nevsky (November 23, August 30, and May 23), and they aided the Russians during the combat. The chronicles are filled with the accounts of the various manifestations of mercy, witnessed at their tombs, and of the victories gained through their help. Many churches and monasteries were built throughout Russia in honor of the holy Passion-Bearers Boris and Gleb. The Orthodox Church in America 16 сентября 2016 г. “I would like to point out that according to this decision, it is impossible to canonize New Martyrs merely as local saints,” stressed the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Holy Council of the Russian Orthodox Church of April 5 (18), 1918, decreed: “To establish throughout Russia the annual commemoration on January 25 or the immediate Sunday following of all those reposed in this terrible year of persecutions of confessors and martyrs.” More recently, the Council of Bishops in 1992 determined: “To establish the celebration of the Host of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia on January 25 (old style, should it fall on a Sunday), or on the nearest following Sunday.” Also, the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia of 1981 decreed: “The general feast day of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia is established on the Sunday between January 22 and 28 according to the Orthodox calendar.” “As a result, the celebration of the Host of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia has been designated differently from year to year in the calendars of the Russian Church Abroad and the Church in the Fatherland. The Synodal Liturgical Commission, having studied this matter, has supported the practice established by the Council of 1981. Accordingly, if January 25 falls on a Monday through Wednesday, the celebration of the Host of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia is celebrated on the previous Sunday, and if January 25 falls on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, it is celebrated on the following Sunday. This system, which has precedence in the Church Ustav, specifically allows us to avoid the celebration of the Host of New Martyrs falling on the feast day of St Basil the Great, St Gregory the Theologian and St John Chrysostom (January 30),” concluded His Holiness, submitting the matter to the Holy Council for deliberation. Fifteenth Anniversary of the Rebirth of Monastic Life in Sretensky Monastery. The First-Hierarch of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) congratulates Archimandrite Tikhon and brothers of Sretensky Monastery/Православие.Ru Fifteenth Anniversary of the Rebirth of Monastic Life in Sretensky Monastery. The First-Hierarch of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) congratulates Archimandrite Tikhon and brothers of Sretensky Monastery June 3, 2009 V. Rev. Archimandrite Tikhon, Abbot Monastery of the Meeting of the Vladimir Icon of the Theotokos ( " Sretensky " Monastery) Moscow, Russia Dear Father Tikhon: It brings me great joy to be able to congratulate you and the entire monastic brotherhood of " Sretensky " Monastery on the occasion of your 15 th Anniversary of the revival of monastic life at your holy habitation. Indeed, there is much that unites the Orthodox Church in America with Sretensky Monastery. It is well known that the ever-memorable Bishop BASIL (Rodzianko) played an integral role in the spiritual formation of the brotherhood of Sretensky Monastery during the early 1990 " s. His Grace was a frequent visitor to your holy habitation and a spiritual advisor to many of the first monastics during the early years of the monastery. In addition, we know that our current Representative to the Russian Orthodox Church, Archimandrite Zacchaeus, while still a hieromonk and then later Igumen labored at Sretensky Monastery while continuing his education at St. Tikhon Orthodox Institute, thus also continuing the spiritual connection that exists between your monastery and the Orthodox Church in America. The brotherly love that exists between our Representative and the Abbot and the brotherhood of Sretensky Monastery is apparent and brings joy to my heart. It is with great fondness and spiritual joys that I remember my visits to Sretensky Monastery during the days of revival in the 1990 " s and then once again as the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America during my first Primatial visit earlier this year. 1 am also aware that you, dear Father Tikhon, with the blessing of the Most Holy Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia also received my two predecessors during their visits to Moscow, thus enabling them to see the positive work of the monastic brotherhood of Sretensky Monastery.

Amen. Sermon on the Feast of the Three Hierarchs Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) Sermon on the Feast of the Three Hierarchs Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) There is much in common among the three hierarchs and great ecumenical teachers whom we commemorate today: Saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom. All three lived in a time when the Christian Church, after almost three centuries of persecution, received freedom and was flourishing throughout the Byzantine ‘oikoumene’. All the three were involved in contesting contemporary heresies. All the three combined serving the Church in episcopal rank with literary activity, and it is precisely their literary legacy which secured for them the paramount place that they occupy in Christian Tradition. All the three were victims of ecclesiastical intrigues. Their posthumous glory, however, exceeded any expectations their contemporaries might have had, and their significance for the entire Christian Church in East and West cannot be overestimated. Even after his death, he did not deny himself the pleasure of a little travel. For a long time, his relatives could not decide where to bury Vladyka. Some proposed Russia—his homeland, after all; some England, next to his matushka, some Serbia, which he loved so much. Vladyka Basil (Rodzianko), post-mortem photograph. I can imagine what ecstasy Vladyka’s soul was experiencing in the heavens: Any trip promised to be interesting. However, his body was taken from Washington no further than New York—someone had insisted that he be buried in the New Diveyevo Convent, not far from the city. But it did not work out there, and Vladyka returned to Washington. There his bodily travels finally ended, and Vladyka was laid to rest in the Orthodox section of “Rock Creek” cemetery. Bishop Basil (Rodzianko). During his life, Vladyka jokingly called himself “the retired” bishop. According to his status, he was only an out-of-staff bishop, sent into “retirement” from the American Autocephalous Church. A “retired bishop” does not rule anything and has no say in official Church life. Therefore, Vladyka introduced himself from time to time as “retired Bishop Basil.” But he was a true bishop! He boundlessly ruled over human souls. The unconquerable strength of this amazing authority, which extends itself even today over those who had the great happiness of knowing Vladyka Basil, were his unforgettable and inimitable kindness, faith, and love. When living at Thessalonica became impossible for the saint, he was forced to journey to Moldavia under the protection of its sovereign, Basil Lukulos, and he settled there in the monastery of Saint Nicholas near Galats, but he longed for Mount Athos. He visited it often and hoped to finish his life there, but God ordained something else for him. In 1652 after the death of Patriarch Cyril I, Saint Athanasius was returned to the patriarchal throne. He remained only fifteen days, since he was not acceptable to the Moslems and Catholics. During his final Patriarchal service he preached a sermon in which he denounced papal pretensions to universal jurisdiction over the whole Church. Persecuted by the Moslems and Jesuits, physically weakened, he transferred the administration of the Church of Constantinople to Metropolitan Paisius of Laureia, and he withdrew to Moldavia, where he was appointed administrator of the monastery of Saint Nicholas at Galats. Knowing the deep faith and responsiveness of the Russian nation, Saint Athanasius undertook a journey to Russia. In April 1653 he was met with great honor in Moscow by Patriarch Nikon (1652-1658) and Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich. Having received generous alms for the needs of the monastery, Patriarch Athanasius left for Galats in December 1653. On the way he fell ill and stayed at the Transfiguration Mgarsk monastery in the city of Lubno in February 1654. Sensing his impending death, the saint wrote his last will, and he fell asleep in the Lord on April 5. Igumen Petronios and the brethren of the monastery buried the Patriarch. By Greek custom the saint was buried in a sitting position. On February 1, 1662 Saint Athanasius was glorified as a saint and his Feastday was designated as May 2, the Feast of Saint Athanasius the Great. The relics of holy Patriarch Athansios, glorified by numerous miracles and signs, rest in the city of Kharkov, in the Annunciation cathedral church. скрыть способы оплаты скрыть способы оплаты Подпишитесь на рассылку Православие.Ru
