This marks the beginning of a three-day long feast by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, celebrating not only the centennary, but also the 130th anniversary of St. Alexander Nevsky’s first foundational stone and the 98th birthday of Patriarch Maxim. Born October 29, 1914, Maxim was enthroned as head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in 1971, currently being the eldest head of an autocephalous Orthodox Church in history. Patriarch Maxim’s health has been unstable of late, and he is currently in hospital due to dizziness and instability, and believers will pray for him Sunday and Monday. The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of Sofia’s key landmarks and the Bulgarian Patriarch’s Cathedral, began to be constructed in 1882. It was not completed until 1912, with its official opening delayed until 1924. Patriarch Kirill gives holy relic to Georgian counterpart admin 23 January 2013 Moscow, January 23, Interfax – Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia has presented the Orthodox Church of Georgia with a relic of Alexander Nevsky, a canonized medieval Russian prince. He handed the relic during a ceremony after a communion service at the Kremlin’s Cathedral of the Assumption that he led jointly with the head of the Georgian Church, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II. Patriarch Kirill mentioned that 2013 is the year of the 650th anniversary of Alexander Nevsky’s death and the tercentennial of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg. He expressed a desire that Georgians should pray for Russia and Georgia before the saint’s relic. He pointed out that Alexander Nevsky is venerated in Georgia as well as in Russia, and mentioned the Church of St. Alexander Nevsky in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. Ilia called Kirill a “defender of Orthodoxy” and gave him a copy of the famous Iveron Theotokos icon and an icon of St. Nina, the enlightener of Georgia. In speaking about the icon of St. Nina, Ilia mentioned that Nazi troops were forced to end their siege of the Patriarch Kirill’s native city of St. Petersburg during World War II on January 27, St. Nina’s Day. “I hope that this icon will protect St. Petersburg,” the Georgian Patriarch said. About 10.2 million euro needed to repair Bulgarian Orthodox Church’s Alexander Nevsky cathedral in Sofia Source: The Sofia Globe Natalya Mihailova 15 January 2016 Twenty million leva (about 10.2 million euro) is needed for urgent repairs to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church’s landmark St Alexander Nevsky cathedral in Sofia, Prime Minister Boiko Borissov told Parliament on January 15. Speaking during Question Time in the National Assembly, Borissov said that the cathedral was in a worrying state. He said that the bearing beams of the cathedral were “compromised” and there were leaks. Borissov, the majority of whose country’s population declare themselves to be Orthodox Christians, said that he had made a commitment to the Holy Synod, the governing body of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, that repairs to Alexander Nevsky cathedral would be carried out. He said that he had discussed the matter with Patriarch Neofit and had made a commitment that funds would be allocated once the project to renovate and strengthen the cathedral building had been completed. “We made the promise to the Holy Synod, because the need for repairs is great,” Borissov said. He said that he was sure that no one in Parliament would oppose the spending. Separately, specialist church news website Dveri said on January 15 that at its most recent meeting, on January 12, the Holy Synod had decided to set up an interdepartmental committee to organise the repair of the cathedral. The commission would invite representatives of the Cabinet office, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, the Ministry of Finance and Sofia Municipality to co-ordinate and jointly undertake the actions necessary to ensure the repair of the chuch, which the Synod described as a symbol of Bulgaria. The decisions of the special interdepartmental commission will come into effect after approval by the full Holy Synod. Bulgaria’s government had said in 2015 that it would allocate 10 million leva for the restoration of Alexander Nevsky cathedral after the repair project was drafted. This project has not yet been done and this was seen as one of the reasons that the chairman of the church board, Bishop Tihon, had been changed.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral consecrated in Montenegro admin 15 September 2013 A cathedral dedicated to the Russian saint has been consecrated in Montenegro. The first Divine Liturgy at the cathedral situated on the Sveti Stefan islet was visited both by Serbian bishops and Moscow Patriarchate representatives. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral’s erection was a miracle for Montenegrins themselves and strengthened friendly and spiritual ties between the countries even more. Photo: Milena Faustova / “Voice of Russia” Almost everyone in Montenegro knows the story of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It was built by the Queen of Yugoslavia, Maria Karageorgievich, and dedicated to the saint because of great affection the Queen had for Russian culture and spirituality. The small and cozy cathedral was situated in a picturesque place – on the Sveti Stefan islet, densely populated at the time, several kilometers away from the town of Budva. In 1957, the Yugoslavia Communist government decided to make a resort from the islet. The cathedral was destroyed and Sveti Stefan’s residents were displaced. The cathedral would have been nothing more than a memory if it wasn’t for a Russian priest, Archimandrite Iliya Nozdrin, known today as the Confessor of Patriarch Kirill. A local resident and one of the initiators of reconstructing the cathedral, Milorad Dzhurashivich told the Voice of Russia correspondent. “J met Iliya when I was invited to accompany him and show the country and our churches to him. Once we were on Sveti Stefan and I told him that back in the days Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was standing there. Then he said we should reconstruct it at any cost. It seemed impossible as there were already a restaurant, casino and hotel instead of the cathedral, but he was sure that we had to fight for the cathedral. From that moment on I decided to act,” he says. Together with other believers Milorad once secretly went to Sveti Stefan and reconstructed the cathedral’s wall stone by stone for the whole night. They were naïve enough to believe that the authorities would ease at the sight of the reconstructed cathedral, Dzhurashivich smiles.

Alexander Nevsky submarine tested with prayer services admin 17 September 2013 Arkhangelsk, September 16, Interfax – Fleet priest hieromonk Veniamin (Kovtun) attended tests of underwater atomic submarine Alexander Nevsky. “Prayer services were held at the rocket deck every day. Sailors asked the Lord that He helps the crew to deal with this complicated task. Everything that depended on people were excellently fulfilled, the crew worked perfectly,” press service of the Arkhangelsk Diocese quoted Fr. Veniamin as saying. The priest baptised an officer at the deck of the submarine. According to him, many people underestimate the importance of forming Christian world outlook among officers, though it is “a very important way of recovering moral and psycological climate.” “It is very important to back up the crew when they go out to the sea as they deal with tasks of state importance. All actions of the crew are perfectly coordinated during ordinary trips. Here we check all working regimens of the submarine, including extreme ones: at the hundred per cent capacity, in full operation. If you’re mistaken for two-three degrees, the boat will rush into the bottom. It’s real extreme,” the priest said.   Source: Interfax-Religion Tweet Donate Share Code for blog Alexander Nevsky submarine tested with prayer services admin Arkhangelsk, September 16, Interfax - Fleet priest hieromonk Veniamin (Kovtun) attended tests of underwater atomic submarine Alexander Nevsky. After him, Archbishop Nikon (Rklitsky; +1976) and Metropolitan Laurus (Skurla; +2008) continued working in the Diocese, founding parishes in many states. His Grace called on the clergy and faithful to continue their legacy and support the Church. At the kissing of the cross, His Grace congratulated Fr Alexei on the first anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood on Thomas Sunday, as well as Fr Nicholas, who was ordained four years ago, and Fr Serge Lukianov with the upcoming 40th anniversary of his ordination to the diaconate. Fr Serge thanked the diocesan vicar for his archpastoral care in the Diocese and introduced an idea of annually celebrating Bright Monday at St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Howell (already a longstanding tradition) and Bright Saturday in Jackson. Bishop Nicholas supported this initiative to continue this new tradition with God’s help.

Translation of the remains of Empress Maria Fyodorovna is for the Russian people an act of repentance in a sense On the eve of the translation of the remains of Empress Maria Fyodorovna Romanova from Denmark to Russia, Interfax-Religion correspondent Vasily Pisarevsky has obtained an interview from Priest-monk Feofan Lukyanov, rector of the Moscow Patriarchate Parish of St. Alexander Nevsky in Copenhagen. On the eve of the translation of the remains of Empress Maria Fyodorovna Romanova from Denmark to Russia, Interfax-Religion correspondent Vasily Pisarevsky has obtained an interview from Priest-monk Feofan Lukyanov, rector of the Moscow Patriarchate Parish of St. Alexander Nevsky in Copenhagen. – In Russia, there is a great interest in the upcoming event – the translation of the remains of Empress Maria Fyodorovna, mother of the Holy Passion-bearer Nicholas II. As is known, she participated, together with her crown-bearing husband, Alexander II, in the consecration of the church of the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky in Copenhagen. Tell us, Father Feofan, whether her name is remembered in Denmark? – Of course! You must have noticed a woman’s bust standing next to the birch-tree in the church yard and bearing the inscription ‘Dagmar (her Danish name) – Maria Fyodorovna – Russian Empress’. A member of the Danish royal family, the young princess came to Russia, married to the Emperor Alexander III and embraced Orthodoxy, which became her own religion, and our country became her second homeland. But she never broke her bonds with Denmark. Besides, she wanted Denmark to have an Orthodox church as well. And her dream came true. The Russian imperial family allocated funds to build a church of St. Alexander Nevsky in the Danish capital city. Though the place for it was chosen right in the center of the city, across the royal palace, the church proved to be squeezed between other two buildings. For this reason, processions with the cross have to go now through a city block. In addition, contrary to church canons, the sanctuary turned out to face not to east but west – the fact that displeased the czar. It took three years to build the church. Its frescoes were made by well-known Russian artist Bogolyubov, a teacher of the imperial family. It was consecrated in 1883 in the presence of the imperial couple.

Bulgarian Parliament to clarify ownership of Sofia’s Alexander Nevsky cathedral Natalya Mihailova 28 February 2014 Legislation is being tabled in the National Assembly to clarify the ownership of Sofia’s landmark Alexander Nevsky cathedral, handing the bulk of the building to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church while keeping the crypt in which icon art is displayed as public property. The fact that documentation regarding ownership of the cathedral has been missing for years has created periodic disputes and confusion. Bulgarian media reports added that the lack of official documentation on ownership was an obstacle to applying for European Union funds. The legislative amendments being tabled by three members of the Bulgarian Socialist Party parliamentary group specify that the cathedral will be held in perpetuity by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. An explanatory memorandum attached to the amendments cites correspondence between the Bulgarian government and the Holy Synod, the latter the governing body of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, in 1924 which recognised that the cathedral was the property of the church. Building of the cathedral, named for Russian saint Alexander Nevsky in honour of the Russian soldiers who died during the Russo-Turkish war that opened the way for Bulgaria’s liberation, began in 1882 when the foundation stone was laid. Most of the building work was done between 1904 and 1912. More than half of the funding for the project came from the state and the rest from municipalities and individuals. The facts of the funding have been raised over the years during arguments over ownership of the cathedral, with those having wanted it in the hands of the state saying that the church itself did not pay for the construction. A decision by Bulgaria’s cabinet on September 5 1913 said that the management of the church was in the hands of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The Holy Synod approved its own ordinance on the management of the church on September 17 1924. Photo: (c) Clive Leviev-Sawyer
