Icon of St. Nicholas streaming myrrh in Dankov Moscow, June 13, 2017 Photo: LipetskMedia.ru      An icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the Cathedral of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God in Dankov, 200 miles southeast of Moscow, has begun streaming myrrh, reports LipetskMedia.ru . Droplets have clearly appeared on the image, forming a small stream flowing from the Gospel depicted being held in the holy hierarch’s hand. The faithful have been using a piece of cotton to collect the streaming myrrh. This rare phenomenon is a truly special sign for the Orthodox faithful of the local town. If the icon continues to exude the blessed myrrh, then a special diocesan commission will be sent to Dankov to investigate the myrrh-streaming icon. According to the cathedral rector Fr. Vladimir Myasoedov, the unique occurrence coincides with two significant events. The first is the approaching celebration in honor of the finding of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, which has been the Heavenly protector of the Dankov people for exactly 200 years. Second is the presence of the relics of St. Nicholas, brought from Bari, Italy, in Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow from May 21 to July 12, and in the St. Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg from July 13 to 28. More than 500,000 Orthodox faithful have already stood in line for hours to venerate the relics of St. Nicholas. 13 июня 2017 г. Over 100 Thousand People Walk In Cross Procession In Memory Of St Alexander Nevsky Among the participants were representatives of the parishes of the St. Petersburg diocese, students of theological schools, and pilgrims. The citywide religious procession took place in honor of the 295th anniversary of the transfer of the holy relics of St. Alexander Nevsky in St. Petersburg on September 12, 2019. The cross procession was attended by 115 thousand people, reports Tass.ru . The procession consisted of two groups: a large one from the Kazan Church and a small one from the Holy Trinity Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky Lavra. The first group proceeded along Nevsky Prospect with the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. It was led by Metropolitan Barsanuphius of St. Petersburg and Ladoga. The second one passed with the saint’s holy relics. It was headed by the abbot of St. Alexander Nevsky Lavra, Bishop Nazarii of Kronstadt. The two groups met on the Alexander Nevsky Square, and a Service of Intercession took place. “The event was attended by representatives of the clergy of the St. Petersburg diocese, students of the city’s theological schools, believers from St. Petersburg, numerous pilgrims from the Leningrad region and other regions of Russia. A delegation from Serbia headed by the Minister for Religious Affairs Miletu Radojevic also took part in honoring St. Alexander Nevsky,” it was reported. The transfer of the holy relics of St. Alexander Nevsky was accomplished by an order of the Emperor Peter the Great. They were delivered from Vladimir to St. Petersburg from August 11, 1723 to August 30, 1724. The galley with the holy relics was met by the Nevsky fleet and Peter I personally. The emperor brought the galley to the shore, then carried the relics to the temple of the Holy Trinity Monastery established by him. A citywide procession in honor of the transfer of the relics was established in 1743 by Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. The tradition, interrupted after the October Revolution, was renewed during the celebration of the 300th anniversary of St. Alexander Nevsky Lavra’s foundation in 2013.

Photo: eadiocese.org The Holy Right-Believing Great Prince Alexander Nevsky was and remains for the Russian people an example of a model Christian, a brave warrior, and a wise commander. Churches and monasteries in Russia and around the world are named for him. In 1724, his relics were transferred to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg. The Church commemorated the transfer of the saint’s relics on August 30 (September 12 n.s.), a date when the life and glorious deeds of the right-believing prince are especially honored. On this day, St. Alexander Nevsky Diocesan Cathedral in Howell, NJ celebrates its patronal feast day. This year, Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan came to share in the joy of the feast with the clergy and parishioners of the cathedral. On Friday, September 11, the clergy and faithful joyously greeted the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God, under whose aegis the divine services were held. Bishop Nicholas then officiated the All-Night Vigil. The day of the feast, September 12, began with the traditional blessing of water. Then, after the greeting of the bishop, Divine Liturgy began, celebrated by Bishop Nicholas. The choir sang majestically under the direction of Alexandra Lukianov. Before Liturgy, Bishop Nicholas ordained parish Reader Roman Serebrennikov a subdeacon. A large number of parishioners and guests came and prayed, and most of these received Christ’s Holy Mysteries. Upon conclusion of Liturgy, His Grace greeted everyone with the feast and addressed the faithful with a sermon. Bishop Nicholas remembered those who served and labored for the good of the parish: Protopresbyter Valery Lukianov, Archpriests Boris Kizenko and Philip Petrovsky, Archdeacon Eugene Burbelo, and others, and noted that it is our responsibility to continue the good works that our ancestors did, also imitating in this the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky. “The Right-Believing Prince Alexander Nevsky had special qualities ? comeliness, discernment, prayer, nobility. A comely man is a man of God. But now the concepts of who and what are beautiful and comely are distorted. A comely person sees God’s creation in everything: both within and all around himself on the earth… Everything beautiful around us is from God. And we ourselves can be very beautiful within, and this is the most important thing in a person who lives spiritually and adorns his soul. In this way, St. Alexander Nevsky was also comely.

On 6 August 2015, the House of Russia-China Cultural Exchange opened at the restored building of the Church of St Alexander Nevsky in the city of Wuhan, China’s Hubei Province. Photo: http://mospat.ru Among those who took part in the opening ceremony were Metropolitan Georgy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas; Mr. Mikhail Babich, Plenipotentiary Envoy of the President of the Russian Federation to the Volga Federal District; and heads of several Volga regions. The Church of St Alexander Nevsky was built in 1893 thanks to the efforts by Pavel Dmitriyevsky, a Russian orientalist scholar who was later appointed General Counsel in Shanghai. The Russian tea merchants who were trading in Wuhan at the time also made their contribution to the construction of the church. In the mid 20th century, some two thousand Orthodox Chinese faithful from nearby villages would attend the Church of St Alexander Nevsky. Chinese children studied at a school established at the church. In the time of the Cultural Revolution the church was confiscated from the faithful and was used first as a warehouse and later as a marriage registration office. By reason of the construction of a tunnel under the Yangtze River, it was planned to demolish a number of buildings. The church could also be destroyed. However, on the initiative of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and following his visit to China in 2013, an agreement was reached between Mr. Mikhail Babich, Plenipotentiary Envoy of the President of the Russian Federation to the Volga Federal District, and Mr. Yang Jiechi, a member of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. The agreement implied the conservation and restoration of the Orthodox Church of St Alexander Nevsky in the city of Wuhan through the efforts of both sides. Mr. Babich appealed to Metropolitan Georgy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas for assistance, and in December 2013 a group of specialists was sent to China from the metropolia of Nizhny Novgorod. In September 2014, the Chinese specialists visited Russia to hold necessary consultations.

Statement from the Chancery of the ROCOR Synod of Bishops on Recent Events at St. Alexander Church in Jerusalem Source: ROCOR Church of Saint Alexander Nevsky (Jerusalem) We in the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia are greatly troubled by the situation of the Church of Blessed Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky, located at the so-called Alexander Compound in Jerusalem, and express our protest against the recent events associated with this holy site. The Orthodox Palestine Society, which is under the jurisdiction of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia according to an arbitration award rendered in Israel in 1996 and internationally confirmed in 1997, is the legal owner of the Alexander Compound. On January 13, 2021, a group of persons subordinate to German citizen Nikolai Worontsov-Hoffman provoked a flagrant incident on the territory of the compound, as a result of which the serving priest of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem (as part of the Russian Church Abroad), assigned to the St. Alexander Nevsky Church, Priest Roman Gultyaev, suffered great humiliation, also insulted were the clergy accompanying him, members of the same Mission under the direct jurisdiction of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad. In addition to the insults inflicted, the persons illegally occupying the territory of the Compound barred entry to the Chief of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission, Archimandrite Roman (Krassovsky), when he arrived for the next Divine Liturgy, celebrated here every Thursday. Nikolai Worontsov-Hoffman is a follower of the former Archimandrite Anthony (Grabbe), a schismatic who was defrocked. Representatives of Worontsov-Hoffman, who are illegally in the State of Israel, have been blocking access to this great shrine for a second week now, trying to forcibly expel the clergy of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem (Russian Church Abroad), which for 100 years had the exclusive right to perform divine services there. In addition, Worontsov-Hoffman allowed himself to widely disseminate malicious and false information among the public and in the media.

The St. Alexander Nevsky Church in Khabarovsk Has Burned Down and its Benefactor Been Killed Source: Pravmir.ru A strong, gusty wind prevented the swift extinguishing of the raging fire. However, firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings. April 5, 2014. PRAVMIR. In Khabarovsk, on the night of April 5, the St. Alexander Nevsky Church burned to the ground. That same night the church’s benefactor, who helped build the church, was killed, the site of the Khabarovsk Diocese writes. A journalist from the news portal RIA “Vostok-Media” was told by Yulia Kalashnikova, a representative of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations press service (Khabarovsk region), that clergymen had first tried to extinguish the flames by themselves. When this failed, they called the firefighters. The first units arrived within five minutes, yet by that time the fire had engulfed an area of around 200 square meters. Extinguishing the fire was hindered by a strong, gusty wind. However, firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings. Fourteen units of firefighters struggled with the fire for nearly two hours. The interviewee of the news portal noted that the wooden church building is currently being watered down and dismantled. A review of the damage and a determination of the fire’s cause will be done later. Representatives of the Khabarovsk Diocese, together with the fire inspectors, will be engaged in this process. Metropolitan Ignatius of Khabarovsk and Amur related these events on his personal blog: “Yesterday, late at night, I received a late phone call from Fr. Oleg Hutorskoy, secretary of the Diocese. He reported to me the murder of Vladimir Fukalov, our steadfast benefactor and energetic assistant in many of our ecclesiastical affairs. At six in the morning, I again received a phone call, and I heard noise and shouting on the phone line. From Fr. Basil Didenko, I learned that the St. Alexander Nevsky Church, which had just recently been completely restored, had just burned down. Both priests are saddened, yet they had not lost their strength of spirit.

Lukianov On Saturday and Sunday, December 14-15, 2019, Eastern American Diocesan Vicar Bishop Luke of Syracuse performed an archpastoral visit to St Alexander Nevsky Diocesan Cathedral in Howell, NJ. Accompanying His Grace was the seminary choir and seminarians from Holy Trinity Seminary in Jordanville, NY. On Saturday evening, Bishop Luke led the all-night vigil in the cathedral, co-served by rector Archpriest Serge Lukianov, Archpriest Vasily Kuzmych (cleric of the Mid-American Diocese), Archpriest Boris Slootsky, Archpriest Seraphim Chemodakov, Priest George Kaplanov, and Protodeacon Leonid Roschko (cathedral clerics), Protodeacon Alexander Kotlaroff (cleric of the Diocese of Australia and New Zealand), and Deacon Michael Pavuk (cleric of St John the Baptist Cathedral in Mayfield, PA). On Sunday, December 15, Bishop Luke was joined at Divine Liturgy with the aforementioned clergy, as well as Archpriest Rafael Melendez (cathedral cleric), Archpriest Boris Oparin (rector of St Joasaph of Belgorod Church in Brooklyn, NY), and Protodeacon Paul Drozdowski (cathedral cleric). The seminary choir sang under the direction of Deacon Nicholas Kotar. At both services, the church was filled with parishioners arriving from New York and neighboring states to pray at the hierarchal Liturgy and venerate the revered wonderworking Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God, which was restored for the first time in many years in memory of the ever-memorable rector of the cathedral, Protopresbyter Valery Lukianov, with funds donated by his family. Many received Christ’s Holy Mysteries (Communion being distributed from three chalices). After the Eucharistic Canon, Bishop Luke ordained Subdeacon Andrey Silov a deacon. He will fulfill his service in St Joasaph of Belgorod Church in Brooklyn. Upon conclusion of Liturgy, Bishop Luke greeted the faithful with a sermon, in which he underscored that the most critical thing in the life of a Christian is above all to attain the Kingdom of God, confess and receive Communion, turn away from everything that binds us to sin, and to become virtuous.
