Tweet Нравится Death Of Ethiopian Orthodox Church Patriarch Highlights Christianity " s Long Presence In African Nation By Vivian Tsai August 17, 2012 The patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, Abune Paulos, died on Wednesday at the age of 76, the government has announced. " His Holiness has passed away, " government spokesman Shimeles Kemal told Agence France-Presse, but did not provide details of his death. Abune Paulos, the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, (on the left) died on Wednesday aged 76. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Thursday that the patriarch had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness in recent weeks. The patriarch " s office is expected to meet Friday to finalize the funeral arrangements. " In his absence, based on the bylaws and canons of the Coptic Church, a new leader will come into office, " spokesman Shimeles said. Abune Paulos served as the patriarch of Ethiopia " s Orthodox Church since 1992, when he was elected to the highest order of the denomination. The patriarch had a most eventful and hectic life. After the Derg, a Communist military junta, seized power in Ethiopia in the 1970s, Abune Paulos was arrested and imprisoned for nine years, before he fled into exile in the U.S. It was not until Prime Minister Meles Zenawi came to power in 1991 that Paulos returned to Ethiopia. Abune Paulos was seen as instrumental in brokering peace in the Ethiopia-Eritrea border war that ended in 2000, and was awarded a Nansen Medal by the United Nations refugee agency in 2000 for his peace and humanitarian work. Unique in sub-Saharan African, Ethiopia has a tradition of Christianity stretching all the way back to the beginning of the Christian era. In fact, the Kingdom of Aksum, which is located in present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea, was the second nation (after Armenia) to adopt Christianity as the state religion in the fourth century. By the seventh century, when Islam swept across the Christian lands of the Middle East, Egypt and North Africa, Christianity remained a strong force in Ethiopia, although the church became isolated from the centers of Christianity in Europe and the Near East. Still, today, well more than half of the population adheres to the faith. According to the 2007 National Consensus, 62.8 percent of Ethiopia " s 84.7-million people are Christian, while 43.5 percent of the total adhere to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Up to 45 million people -- living in and outside of Ethiopia -- followed Abune Paulos " leadership. International Business Times 18 августа 2012 г. This was meant to be a christological compromise with the Monophysite party, a “moving away” from Chalcedon without actually saying so openly, and it had roused the opposition of the West, as well as many of the leading Orthodox fathers of the day, including St. Maximos the Confessor. Although Emperor Constans II (641–68) and Sergius II, Patriarch of Constantinople, supported the Chalcedonian party, they nevertheless saw Monotheletism as a possible way to conciliate the Monophys- ites. Pope Martin I, however, opposed this christological formula vehemently, and as a result he was arrested in 653 and died in exile. The harsh treatment of the pope by the emperor had strained Byzantine relations with the West, a fact that now prompted Emperor Constantine III to act for conciliation in the face of the empire’s Islamic invaders, whom many took to be a scourge from God. At the Council of Constantinople which the emperor convened, the conciliar fathers asserted the doctrine that Christ was at one and the same time both fully human and fully divine, complete man and God. They emphasized the importance of his full humanity and the importance of never diminishing this aspect of the person of Christ in favor of a sense of the great power of divinity that “absorbed” or “occluded” the human nature. The definition regarding the will of Christ pointed to two faculties, two wills, pertaining to Christ’s two natures, whose goals were not directed against each other, since the human will was in all things subject to the divine will. As such, the council was a clear reaffirmation of the enduring significance of Chalcedon 451. In addition to the main focus of the council on the christological question of the will of Jesus, important rules and canons were later added with a view to reforming the discipline of the church. It is classed as the Sixth Ecumenical Council of the church. Archive Metropolitan Nikiphoros of Kykkos and Tillyria calls the uncanonical decision of Patriarch of Constantinople to recognize schismatics in Ukraine the reason behind the current painful crisis in inter-Orthodox relations 30 November 2019 year 11:02 In his greeting speech to the participants in the International Conference on Monasticism and Today’s World, which opened in Nicosia, Cyprus, on 28 th  November 2019, Metropolitan Nikiphoros of Kykkos and Tillyria (Orthodox Church of Cyprus) expressed his concern over the painful crisis that had arisen within the Orthodox Church because of the uncanonical decision of Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople to recognize the schismatic church of Kiev and to grant it the so-called “autocephaly” in defiance of the unanimous canonical tradition and historical church practice.  “This tragedy of schism between the brethren beloved in the Lord threatens to split the body of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church of Christ,” Metropolitan Nikiphoros said, as reported by the Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church citing Romfea.gr. The hierarch of the Church of Cyprus stated with regret that the current developments “resemble the threshold of the Great Schism of 1054, which divided Ecumenical Christianity into Western Catholics and Eastern Orthodox. The schism threatens Ecumenical Orthodoxy after the Primates of the Churches of Alexandria and Greece joined the Ecumenical Patriarch’s decision.” “It is not permissible for anyone, and especially for us Orthodox monks, who are the first defenders of our Church, to remain indifferent to the dramatic situation in which our Orthodoxy has found itself. We all need to translate our passive anxiety into active responsibility. We must prayerfully invoke the mercy of God and the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit, so that the Primates of the Local Orthodox Churches, with all-embracing love and humble and sacrificial thoughts, may listen to the voice of the Lord, overcome impermissible egoism, obsessions, and mania for power, and begin a fraternal pan-Orthodox dialogue aimed at overcoming the present crisis threatening the unity of Orthodoxy,” Metropolitan Nikiphoros also said. Having reminded all those present at the conference that “the sin of schism is incurable and inexcusable,” Metropolitan Nikiphoros of Kykkos and Tillyria added: “Only if the principle of conciliarity, on which the Orthodox Church has always relied, will work, can a way out of today’s situation be found,” website of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Synodal Department for Monasteries and Monasticism reports. A Pan-Orthodox Divine Liturgy is Celebrated on the 100 th Anniversary of World War I Melbourne, Australia , August 5, 2014      For the first time, a joint commemorative Divine Liturgy was celebrated on July 19, 2014, for the fallen Orthodox warriors of World War I, with the blessing of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of Australia and Oceania. The service was performed in the large Greek church of the Monastery “It is Truly Meet” in Melbourne, Australia. Participating were clergymen of the Local Orthodox Churches of Constantinople, Russia, Serbia, Rumania and Antioch. Bishops of the Greek, Serbian and Rumanian Churches officiated, who were joined by three priests and one deacon from each Church. Divine Liturgy was performed in each of the languages represented, plus English. The choirs, which also represented each jurisdiction, sang in their own tongues. The Holy Gifts were distributed from two chalices. The spiritual intensity was shared by all who attended this historic event. Many worshipers were brought to tears. A common patriotism gripped everyone, a sense of love for each one’s Fatherland. The power of the service was compounded by the realization of how many Orthodox Christians live in Melbourne. The young people were particularly struck by this realization. The service was a good example for the children in inspiring within them a sense of pride and respect for the history of their nations. It was heartwarming to see children wearing folk costumes at the service.      “This is one of the traditions we strive to preserve for our new generations,” said Vladyka Ezekiel of Melbourne of the Constantinople Patriarchate. He also expressed thanks to the clergymen, laity, officials from the diplomatic corps of the various nations and members of the Australian military who came to honor the memory of the Orthodox Christian soldiers who gave their lives on the battlefield during World War I. Vladyka pointed out that in order to preserve peace, Orthodox Christians possess nothing greater than faith and prayer, both a hundred years ago and today. At the end of Liturgy, a commemorative litiya was performed with the blessing of koliva [or kollyba, a blessed wheat-honey dish]. Then, in the presence of the Serbian Ambassador, the Consul General of Greece and the First Secretary of the Russian Embassy, Oleg Frantsev, as well as representatives of the Australian military, wreaths were placed in the monastery’s garden to honor the fallen warriors of World War I      After services, the honored guests were offered a memorial luncheon at which Protopriest Michael Protopopoff, the organizer of the commemorative event, gave a speech on the origins of the First World War and its tragic consequences for millions of Orthodox Christians. 11 августа 2014 г. Foundation of Royal Martyrs church laid at site of Tsar’s abdication Moscow, March 15, 2017 Photo: Foma.ru      On March 14, Metropolitan Eusebius of Pskov and Porkhov celebrated the rite of the founding of a temple in honor of the Holy Royal Martyrs at the station in the city of Dno, where on March 15, 1917, Tsar Nicholas II signed his abdication in favor of his brother Michael, reports the site of the Pskov Diocese. His Eminence was assisted by the deputy abbot of the Holy Annunication-Nikandrov Hermitage Archimandrite Seraphim (Ivashchenko), abbot of St. John the Theologian-St. Savva of Krypetsk Monastery Igumen Savva (Komarov), and others. Governor Andrei Turchak of the Pskov region and monastics and faithful from throughout the area were in attendance. Metropolitan Eusebius addressed the crowd before beginning the rite, stating, “Today we remember an especially sad day for our Russia—the removal from power of the Russian Tsar Nicholas II. It is a sorrowful day.” “The reign of Emperor Nicholas was in the line of his predecessors from the days of Prince Vladimir and our holy compatriot, the right-believing Russian Princess Olga. Tsar Nicholas maintained, adorned, edified, and expanded Russia, caring for its people,” the hierarch stated. “But there was also the influence of special worldly forces which overtook Russia like a hurricane and beheaded it, promising Heaven on earth. But, probably, they will not receive the Heavenly Paradise.” Metropolitan Eusebius also expressed the hope that this day would mark a new era of prosperity in Russia, overthrowing the horrors of the previous century. “And whatever may be said about the emperor Tsar Nicholas, we know one thing—he loved his people, he loved God, and he was committed to the holy Orthodox faith of his ancestors and did not change in the difficult times for the Russian people and the Russian homeland. Let us beseech the Lord for His blessing on the beginning of our building here on this place a church-monument,” he continued. Then His Eminence celebrated the rite of the foundation of a new church, seeking the blessing of the Lord on the house of God and those who will build it, during which the entire foundation was sprinkled with Holy Water. Together with the Pskov governor, the metropolitan also laid a foundation stone. Following the celebratory rite, His Eminence again addressed the people, encouraging them to bring to the church their zeal, their heart, their love of country, and their love for their pious ancestors, “and may God grant that this building would be successful, well-pleasing, and memorable, serving for the benefit of all, for both the living and for our descendants,” he concluded. 15 марта 2017 г. Proposal out to hold Pan-Orthodox Council in Geneva instead of Istanbul Istanbul, January 9, 2016      According to the Romfea agency, Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople says that there can be no justification for nonparticipation by any Local Orthodox Churches in the coming Pan-Orthodox Council. Romfea has also reported the Council’s previously planned venue of Istanbul, may be changed because representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church will probably not be able to come to Phanar after the Russian government recommended Russian citizens to refrain from going to Turkey due to the strain in relations between the Russian Federation and Turkey, reports Pravlife.org with reference to Sedmitza.ru . Meanwhile, Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens and All Greece, primate of the Church of Greece, will not be able to participate at the Council because he is currently at variance with primate of the Church of Constantinople Bartholomew I. There are also problems with participation by representatives of the Orthodox Church of Antioch in the Council inasmuch as Eucharistic communion between the Patriarchate of Antioch and the Patriarchate of Jerusalem was broken off due to the problem of Qatar. The Jerusalem Patriarchate has opened a church in Qatar, which traditionally falls under the canonical jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Antioch. After Jerusalem did not responded to Antioch’s requests to remedy the situation, Antioch broke off communion with Jerusalem. Pravoslavie.ru 12 января 2016 г. Although I am Greek, I firmly believe Moscow is the Third Rome. Russia is the largest Orthodox country and for centuries has been protecting Eastern Christians. Russia is the only great power that cares for Christians in the East and Moscow should be praised for seeking to defend the Christians of Syria. The Church of Constantinople is First Among Equals with primacy of honor. No one disputes this. The accusation that the Russians are trying to take over is a western tactic aimed at dividing the Greeks from the Russians. Read the books " The Orthodox Church and Independent Greece 1821-1852 " by Charles Frazee and " Orthodoxy and the West " by Christos Yannaras to see how the West has undermined the independence of Greece by attempting to destroy Greek-Russian relations. Many heroes of the Greek War of Independence such as Theodoros Kolokotronis who was the leader of the Pro Russian Party in Greece were imprisoned by the German King that was installed in Greece by the Western powers. The Orthodox need brotherhood and unity under the leadership of Russia which is defending Christianity from genocide in the Middle East. Ted

Abbot Ephraim of Vatopedi and other defendants acquitted in land exchange case Moscow, March 21, 2017 Photo: Mystagogy      The court of appeals for serious crimes, consisting of three judges, has acquitted all defendants in the case of a land exchange between the Greek government and Vatopedi Monastery, reports RIA-Novosti . Charges against Archimandrite Ephraim, abbot of Mt. Athos’ Vatopedi Monastery, Monk Arsenios, and twelve others in the so-called “Holy Exchange” have been dropped. The controversial case spanned many years, and many considered it mere political intrigues. It played an important role in the change of power in Greece’s 2009 parliamentary elections. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Russian Orthodox Church spoke out in defense of Archimandrite Ephraim, who had brought the Holy Cincture of the Theotokos from the Athonite monastery to Russia in October 2011, and was held in jail for several months between December 2011 and March 2012. Nine years after publications began to appear about the controversial exchange, the court ruled that nothing scandalous occurred in the handing over of land between the Greek state and Vatopedi Monastery, and acquitted all defendants. The public prosecutor’s office of the Greek Supreme Court filed an appeal in their defense in 2013. The scandal broke in 2008 when the monastery transferred Vistonida Lake with the coastal areas to the government at a high rate in exchange for 260 valuable plots of land, including in Athens, which the monastery immediately resold. The government recognized the exchange of lands, although the monks’ right to own the lands around the lake were disputed. According to the monastery, the land was given to it over a millennium ago by the Byzantine Emperor. The scandal arose in that the exchange was notarized by a notary whose husband held a ministry post at that time. Those against the monastery claimed it cheated the government of more than 100 million euros “Today’s verdict closes a huge wound. It restores truth and honor to those unjustly accused. Although it’s late, in the end light always overcomes darkness,” said former Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis who had earlier been acquitted as well. He also emphasized that the “scandal” was merely slander against the monastery that brought years of anguish for many. After his time in jail, Abbot Ephraim had also been acquitted of obstruction of justice in 2012. 21 марта 2017 г. v. 37. Col. 407–408). In spite of the fact that in this document the Patriarch of Moscow is ranked among the old Eastern patriarchs , the autocephaly of the Russian Church the patriarchal dignity of its head are reconfirmed in it and; the Moscow Patriarchate is the first in the list of the heads of the newly formed autocephalous Churches, preceding the heads of the Churches of Georgia, Bulgaria and Cyprus. In 1721, the patriarchal office was abolished in the Russian Church by the decision of Emperor Peter I. To give the new church government a greater authority, Peter I addressed the Patriarch Jeremiah III of Constantinople on September 30, 1721, notifying him of the establishment of the Synod and asking him,  in consultation with other patriarchs, ‘to be pleased to recognize the establishment of a church Synod as good’. In his letter the tsar expressed the wish that the Patriarchate of Constantinople ‘be in correspondence and contacts with the Synod concerning every church affair like it was with the Patriarchs of All Russia before’ (Peter’s deed with a parallel Greek translattion published in Бенешевич В. Н. Сборник памятников по истории церковного права… Пг., 1915. Вып. 2. С. 206–212). The answer to the point was given a year and a half later, on September 23, 1723. The text of the deed of Patriarch Jeremiah of Constantinople was duplicated by almost the same deed by Patriarch Athanasius of Antioch (the see of Alexandria was vacant at that time while the Patriarch of Jerusalem was ill) (see, ПСЗ РИ. 1-е собрание. Т. 7. 4310). In his deed Patriarch Jeremiah informed Peter about the recognition of the Holy Synod as ‘his brother in Christ’: ‘Our Humbleness, by the grace and power of the All-Holy, Life-giving and Holy Commanding Spirit, approves, seals and declares that the Synod established by the most pious autocrat, the holy tsar of all Muscovy, Minor and White Russia, and the Lord Master of all the northern, eastern, western and many other countries, the Sovereign Peter Alekseyevich, the Emperor and our beloved and most desired brother.

Ukrainian officials exerting pressure on priests of the canonical Church Kiev, October 29, 2014 The official website of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC MP) has published the statement of the External Church Relations Department of UOC MP, made in connection with an attempt of the state authority in the Kirovohrad region to force the rector of the parish of Exaltation of Holy Cross to transfer to the uncanonical “Kyiv Patriarchate”.      The full text of the statement is as follows: In connection with the attempted interference of the state authority bodies of the Golovanevsk (Holovanivsk) district of the Kirovohrad region in the activities of the local parishes of UOC MP with the purpose of the forced change of their confessional status, the UOC External Church Relations Department reports the following: On October 20, 2014, Rector of the parish of Exaltation of Holy Cross in Peregonovka village of Golovanevsk district of the Kirovohrad region Archpriest Svyatoslav Levandovsky was summoned to the Peregonovka village council, where deputy head of the district administration Vladimir Vladimirovich Kozak compelled him to transfer his parish from UOC MP to the so-called “Kyiv Patriarchate”, unrecognized throughout the universal Orthodox world. The government official exerted psychological pressure on Archpriest Svyatoslav Levandovsky and threatened him that in case of refusal to transfer to the “Kyiv Patriarchate” the clergyman would be forcibly driven away from the church and “left without his job and salary”. The UOC MP External Church Relations Department is authorized to state that such actions are a crude violation of the international and national legislation about freedom of conscience (of worship). Furthermore, the above-mentioned actions of a government official is a sheer abuse of his power. The mentioned fact also reveal’s the neglect of the commission of the Ukrainian prime minister Arseny Yatsenyuk to the executive state authority bodies of October 13, on “prevention of aggravation of interreligious relations, including seizure of buildings for public worship.” Once again we would like to stress that such gross interference by the civil authorities in UOC MP affairs is absolutely inadmissible. We state that information on this incident as well as other similar incidents will be reported to the competent Ukrainian bodies and international agencies that monitor cases of human rights violations, and the right to freedom of conscience and freedom of religion is an integral part of human rights. 1 ноября 2014 г.
