Diocese of Australia & New Zealand Builds First Romanian Orthodox Monastery in Southern Hemisphere Source: Basilica.ro The  Romanian Diocese of Australia and New Zealand  is carrying out a complex project in the Australian state of Victoria, which includes the first Romanian Orthodox monastery in the southern hemisphere, a social and cultural centre, an episcopal chapel and a church dedicated to the Three Holy Romanian Hierarchs Andrew aguna, Gregory the Teacher, and Theodosius of Brazi. These are “particularly important projects for pastoral-missionary work in Australia and New Zealand. The Theotokos helped us find this property,” Bishop Mihail said about the piece of land in Melton, Victoria. The monastery, dedicated to the Life-Giving Spring, was founded in 2011, and the chapel with the same patronal feast was consecrated in 2012 when the foundation stone was laid for the Social-Pastoral Centre “Holy Emperors Constantine and Helen”. Since then, the Divine Liturgy has been celebrated regularly. The headquarters of the diocesan centre also operate there. At the end of 2013, the foundation stone was laid for the Episcopal Chapel dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel and the Cultural-Missionary Centre “Priest Dumitru Stniloae”. In 2017 the arrangement of the parking lot for the believers’ vehicles was completed. The church dedicated to the Three Holy Romanian Hierarchs will be a symbol of the unity of Romanians everywhere. The monastery’s chapel keeps a reliquary with fragments of the relics of the three saints. Thus, a centre of Romanian Orthodoxy will operate in Melton. “It is necessary to create conditions for pastoral-missionary activity within the diocese, to preserve the Romanian Christian faith, culture and traditions in Australia and New Zealand,” said His Grace Bishop Mihail. The Romanian Diocese of Australia and New Zealand was established in 2008, and Bishop Mihail was enthroned in the same year, on the feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, which is also the patronal feast of the Romanian Orthodox Cathedral in Melbourne, Australia. From Nicaea, Archbishop Sava returned to Mount Athos, where he profusely donated to the monasteries. In Hilandar, he addressed the question of administration: “he taught the hegumen specially how to, in every virtue, show himself as an example to others; and the brothers, once again, he taught how to listen to everything the hegumen said with the fear of God”, as witnessed by Teodosije. From Hilandar, Sava travelled to Thessaloniki, to the monastery of Philokalos, where he stayed for some time as a guest of the Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, Constantine the Mesopotamian, with whom he was a great friend ever since his youth. His stay was of great benefit as he transcribed many works on law needed for his church. Upon his return to Serbia, he had great engagement regarding the organization of the Serbian church, especially regarding the structure of bishoprics, those that were situated on locales at the sensitive border with the Roman Catholic West. At the assembly in ia in 1219, Sava “chose, from his pupils, God-understanding and God-fearing and honorable men, who were able in managing by divine laws and by tradition of the Holy Apostles, and keep the apparitions of the holy God-bearing fathers. And he consecrated them and made them bishops” (Domentijan). Sava gave the newly appointed bishops law books and sent them to bishoprics in all parts of Serbia. It is not known how many bishoprics he founded. The following bishoprics were under his administration: Zeta (Zetska), seated at Monastery of Holy Archangel Michael in Prevlaka near Kotor; Hum (Humska), seated at Monastery of the Holy Mother of God in Ston; Dabar–Bosna (Dabrobosanska), seated at Monastery of St. Nicholas on the Lim; Moravica (Moravika), seated at Monastery of St. Achillius in the Moravica region; Budimlja (Budimljanska), seated at Monastery of St. George; Toplica (Toplika), seated at Monastery of St. Nicholas in the Toplica region; Hvosno (Hvostanska), seated at Monastery of the Holy Mother of God in the Hvosno region; ia (ika), seated at ia, the seat of the Church; Raška (Raške), seated at Monastery of Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Pe; Lipljan (Lipljanska), seated at Lipljan; Prizren (Prizrenska), seated at Prizren. Among his bishops were Ilarion and Metodije. In the same year Sava published Zakonopravilo (or “St. Sava’s Nomocanon”), the first constitution of Serbia; thus the Serbs acquired both forms of independence: political and religious.

A long-awaited, 60-plus page document by His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon, titled  “Of What Life Do We Speak?  Four Pillars for the Fulfillment of the Apostolic Work of the Church,”  was released on Friday, June 29, 2018—the Feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul—in preparation for the  19th All-American Council  of the Orthodox Church in America. Drawing on Scripture and the writings of the late Protopresbyter Alexander Schmemann, Metropolitan Tikhon focuses on four essential areas, or “pillars,” of the Orthodox Christian Tradition—the Spiritual Life, Stewardship, Relations with Others, and Outreach and Evangelism.  In each instance, Metropolitan Tikhon relates these four pillars, individually and collectively, to the overall life of the Church for clergy and faithful alike while considering the challenges facing the Orthodox Church in America as it continues to minister and witness well into the 21st century. “The work I am releasing today is the product of prayer and reflection, as well as the consideration of input I have received from the Holy Synod, Metropolitan Council, clergy and individual members of the Orthodox Church in America over the past four years,” Metropolitan Tikhon said.  “It was initially inspired by the theme of our  18th All-American Council  which challenged us to respond to Saint Tikhon’s question: How do we expand the mission of Orthodoxy in North America? “Now, I am offering a framework which will further help guide the work of the Orthodox Church in America, her parishes, clergy, monastics, and faithful, not only during our discussions at the 19th All-American Council in Saint Louis, but for decades to come,” Metropolitan Tikhon concluded.  “May the intercessions of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, whose memory we celebrate today, guide and inspire us on this journey.” The  complete text of  Of What Life Do We Speak?  is available in PDF format for downloading.  Copies also will be available at the 19th All-American Council, slated to convene in Saint Louis, MO July 23-27, 2018.

July 21, 2015. PRAVMIR. An icon of St. Sergius of Radonezh printed on paper gushed forth myrrh on his feast day at the Church of the Apostles Paul and Peter in the town of Novopavlovsk. Photo: kp.ru According to the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper, thousands of parishioners have come to pray before this icon. A special committee of the Russian Orthodox Church has travelled to Stavropol to examine the icon, question witnesses, and to draw conclusions. “It is so far too early to speak about a holy miracle,” said Fr. Vladislav (Tsapko), Rector of the Sts. Paul and Peter Church. “We are waiting for the experts’ conclusion. However, the event testifies to the fact that this is a sacred place, although the church is young, and that the purity of Orthodox traditions is preserved here. Perhaps, this myrrh-streaming is a good sign of the redemption of the parishioners’ sins. Or, perhaps, it foreshadows painful news. No one can ever say.” Icons stream myrrh in various places in Russia. Thus, in early 2015 an icon of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ became myrrh-streaming in the Orlov region; the Kazan Icon of the Theotokos “wept” in the Altai Republic; all icons of the Archangel Michael Church in Tula gushed forth myrrh at the same time; and a similar miracle occurred in the middle of an Orthodox exhibition in Ulyanovsk. An icon of Jesus Christ bled in a village church in the Rahachow district in Belarus. Similar events have taken place in the Kabardino-Balkar Republic. Red spots were found on an icon of the First Martyr Stephan. Code for blog Since you are here… …we do have a small request. More and more people visit Orthodoxy and the World website. Wedding As Restoration Of Humanity The fact that the woman was taken from man shows that woman and man are part of the same creation‚ that they share the same nature; yet‚ they are ontologically different in ways that make them complementary to each other. The union between a man and a woman‚restores therefore‚ in a way‚ the fullness of humanity. [iv] Marriage‚ in the Christian understanding as monogamous‚heterosexual and blessed by God‚ is part of the  good existence  that St. Maximus speaks about. St. Maximus does not deny the value of marriage‚ because he sees it as the way instituted by God for human procreation that we cannot reject. [v]  However‚ marriage has to be regarded in the context of the working of the virtues. Marriage has to retain its salvific purpose and not be degraded to a union of pleasure‚convenience‚ social status or anything else that might pervert its spiritual purpose. The union in the flesh between husband and a wife united in Holy Matrimony transcends sexuality in its animal‚ non-rational form. It is a form of chastity‚ as the marital bed is undefiled. Christ performed His first miracle at a wedding‚ transforming what is common‚ water‚ into something special‚ the good wine‚ showing how the union between a man and a woman can lead to something better than living alone. We see thus how‚ even through the use of those things that are lower‚ like sexuality‚ once they are positively transformed through the fulfillment of their God intended purpose‚ they support us in our communion with God. Their perversion however‚ into increasingly degraded forms‚ has the opposite effect of alienation from God and missing the mark of the likeness of God. Man and woman‚ icon and vocation‚ synergy and complementarity   In the epistles of the Holy Apostle Paul [vi]  and Peter [vii] ‚ we have several passages that address the relationship between man and woman that would lead to a spiritual union and restoration of the fullness of man through marriage. These passages are read during the sacraments of crowning and are meant as guidelines to the new couple that enters a life of communion. It is unfortunate though that a superficial reading of these scriptural accounts could lead someone to the wrong conclusion that there is some plot against women‚ a sort of patriarchal ploy meant to undermine women and lead them into unquestioning submission. But‚ if we believe the Scriptures to be true and we are not ashamed of their teaching and find ourselves ready to follow them‚ we have to read them carefully and meditate upon their meaning with the help of the Fathers.

I cannot find sufficient words to express how special our feelings were when we celebrated the Divine Liturgy today. “Recalling the archpastoral feats performed by one of my predecessors, Metropolitan Anastasius (Gribanovsky), the author of popular conversations with his own heart, who was consecrated as bishop this day 115 years ago at the Cathedral of the Assumption in the Moscow Kremlin, we have prayed today so that the Chief Pastor Christ may continue and multiply His mercies for the spiritual unity between the Russian Church abroad and the Russian Church at home, which we had sought with brotherly love and great efforts”, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York noted. He stressed, “We believe that this unity between us will serve as a source for beneficial consolation and consolidation for all the faithful of the Russian Orthodox Church in this period so difficult for the Orthodox world”.
