Furthermore, in a massive work called Periphyseon (‘About nature’) Eriugena presented a unified view of the whole of reality in a profoundly mystical vein: God, the creation of the world and man, and the return to God. Everything in the universe is said to participate in a double movement: a procession or going out from God and a return to God. A continuous movement is thus taking place between the Uncreated (God) and the created (the angels, man and the world). From the early 13th century onwards the Middle Ages suppressed Eriugena, with his work being condemned and placed on the Index of banned books. Only during the 20th century has his greatness begun to be recognized, a process in which contemporary Irish scholars such as John O’Meara, Mary Brennan, Dermot Moran and Deirdre Carabine have played no small part. Today Eriugena is widely regarded as the greatest Western philosopher of the early Middle Ages, the most important link between East and West in medieval Christianity. Epilogue During the final years of the second Christian millennium and the first years of the third, the fullness of the Orthodox Christian faith was brought to Ireland with the establishment of Greek, Russian, Romanian and Georgian Orthodox churches in Dublin. In addition, an Antiochian church was founded in Belfast, amidst an Ulster population torn apart by decades of sectarian conflict. Thus has the vibrant spirituality of Irish Christianity developed via its flowering in monasticism and missionary activity, its suffering at the hands of the Viking invasions, its oppression from the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion onwards, and ultimately its fulfilment in the Orthodox Christian Faith. His book " De Synodis " was dedicated to the Western bishops, including those of the " provinces of Britain " . However, it is safe to assume that the latter included the Irish Christians at the time, as the difference between P and Q Celtic was still small and the Irish Sea formed no barrier between the British and the Irish. It would therefore be natural to have bishops presiding on both sides, just as a century later there were kings ruling on both sides, like the Dalriada in the north and the Eoghanacht of Munster ruling in parts of Wales. The king of Munster around 360, Conal, was already a Christian, thus predating the arrival of Saints Palladius and Patrick by several decades. My apology for the typing error.(With acknowledgement to my Irish Orthodox friend Conor MacCarthy). Thank you Cyril, the article has meanwhile been published in booklet form by the author, in English and Russian. My email is wdebeer@yahoo.com.

When he was at the gates of Damascus, Saul from Tars, the persecutor, later on Saint Paul the Apostle understood that it was a living relationship between Christ, the Lord, and those who believed in Him, and that when the Church, namely the Body of Christ, suffered, Christ suffered too”, the Primate of the Romanian Orthodox Church explained. While speaking about the preaching of these Saints Apostles, the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church showed that the people were hostile to them and that they suffered a lot because of their faith in Christ, becoming models worthy following, examples of confessing the Gospel of Christ not only in good times, but also in times of persecution: “These great teachers of repentance become great missionaries too, people who enlighten the life of many pagans, who guide the confused ones, raise the fallen ones, and encourage the disappointed ones. Saint Peter the Apostle and Saint Paul the Apostle preached the Gospel of Christ in a hostile world, and they were imprisoned several times. (…) These imprisonments were complemented with many troubles, having been beaten and mocked. They suffered a lot, this fact showing that the world they were preaching in was against them very often either because of a formalist faith of the Jews or because of the pagan faiths. (…) Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles preached the Gospel in a hostile world, with much confusion from the point of view of the faith, of the life with much injustice. Nevertheless they were victorious through the power of God. (…) Today, these two great apostles, preachers, missionaries, teachers of repentance, as well as of courage, are enlighteners of the Church for us, who pray and urge us to preach the Gospel not only when everything is well, but also in times of persecution and hostility. To end with his speech, His Beatitude wished all those who were celebrating their name days joy and much help of God for keeping, transmitting, and intensifying faith: “Today about 500,000 Romanians are named Peter or Paul, the names of these Saints Apostles or of other names derived, which fact shows that our people have great devotion for these great Apostles whom we pray to protect and enlighten us to love Christ and the Church, to be confessors of the right faith, supporters of the Church and of her work in the world. We wish all those named Peter and Paul many years of life, good health, joy and much help of God for keeping, transmitting and intensifying the faith”. Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles are considered protectors of those deprived of liberty in Romania. 11 июля 2013 г. For his part, the Catholic pontiff overlooked the vital dogmatic differences, insisting at his Tbilisi Papal Mass that Catholics ought never to proselytize the Orthodox, which would be “a grave sin against ecumenism,” in light of his belief that Orthodox and Catholics are brothers and sisters in the faith. For the Orthodox, it would be precisely the notion that we must never seek to bring Catholics into the saving enclosure of the Orthodox Church that would be a sin, and a grave one at that, wholly lacking in love. The Pope was met with respect and dignity, but not as a right-believing bishop of the true Church. He was neither invited to homilize during any Orthodox divine service, nor to bless the Orthodox faithful, nor was he seated upon any episcopal throne, nor was the liturgical Kiss of Peace exchanged—actions which would only wound the Orthodox conscience of the faithful, causing confusion and anger. As a wise and discerning shepherd, Patriarch-Catholicos Ilia II maintained a balance between respect for his guest and respect for his own flock and Church, and his own ordination, with all its ensuing responsibilities, setting an example for Orthodox-Catholic interactions, and giving voice to the Orthodox truth in his own speech at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral: “True faith, humbleness and our traditions—these are the ancient treasures that we preserve and will continue to do so in future. We greet you again and confess that our unity is in the true faith . Only true faith and love will open the path towards our communion.” Jesse Dominick 4 октября 2016 г. Orthodox Europe Monk Gorazd 3 сентября 2011 г. ... By the editor (Orthodox Europe). It was the tyranny of the Austro-Hungarian Empire against Orthodox in Serbia that sparked off the First World War. St. Gorazd was a Moravian and linguist, one of the seven disciples of Sts Cyril and Methodius. Despite initial Papal support, in the ninth century he was chased out of Moravia by Frankish political machinations and persecutions of Orthodoxy. He then went to the south Slavs (Yugoslavs) in Ochrid in southern Serbia. Feast: 27 July. Metropolitan Antony (Khrapovitsky) of Kiev (1863-1936) was the great renewer of theology and Church life in Russia before the Revolution and also the main organiser of the 1918 Russian Church Council. Probably the finest theological mind the Russian Church produced in the twentieth century, he was the leading advocate of the restoration of the freedom of the Russian Church and the Patriarchate, after the decadent period instituted by Peter I. After the 1918 Council he was imprisoned in a Uniat monastery. Released, he went to Constantinople and then Serbia, and with the blessing of the holy Patriarch Tikhon of Moscow, he founded the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia. The seventeen volumes of his works total 6,000 pages. Although some have found him overzealous in stamping out Russian Scholasticism and renewing genuine Patristic theology in Russia, he has been accorded the title " Blessed " . (1880-1937). He was elected Patriarch of Serbia in 1930. The vicious Austro-Hungarian persecution of Orthodox in the East of their Empire went on for hundreds of years until the First World War. During that War in well-documented war-crimes, hundreds of Orthodox were hanged by the Austro-Hungarian authorities because of their Faith. Jan Hus (1369-1415) was an early Czech reformer who was inspired by Orthodoxy and in turn inspired the English reformer Wyclif. Both men, but especially Hus by reason of his knowledge of early Czech history, knew that the Orthodox alone had kept the Faith. Hus was burnt at the stake by the Catholic Church. Sadly, later reformers both in Bohemia and elsewhere in Western Europe overlooked Orthodoxy and invented Protestantism.

Tweet Нравится Hieromartyr Isidore and 72 Others at Yuriev, Estonia Commemorated on January 8 Photo: http://days.pravoslavie.ru/ Saint Isidore was priest of Saint Nicholas church in the city of Yuriev (Derpto, at present Taru in Estonia). According to the terms of a treaty concluded in 1463 between the Moscow Great Prince Ivan III and the Livonian knights, the latter were obligated to extend every protection to the Orthodox at Derpto. But the Livonian knights (who were German Catholics) broke the treaty and tried to force the Orthodox to become Roman Catholics. The priest Isidore bravely stood forth in defense of Orthodoxy, preferring to accept a martyr’s crown rather than submit to the Catholics. The Latin bishop and the Roman Catholic nobles of Yuriev had been told that Saint Isidore and the Orthodox population of the city had spoken against the faith and customs of the Germans. When Saint Isidore and seventy-two of his parishioners went to bless the waters of the River Omovzha (or Emaiyga, now Emajogi) for the Feast of Theophany, they were arrested and brought before the Latin bishop Andrew and the civil judges of the city. Pressure was brought on them to convert to Catholicism, but the saint and his flock refused to renounce Christ or the Orthodox Faith. Enraged by this, the authorities had them thrown into prison. Photo: http://days.pravoslavie.ru/ Saint Isidore encouraged his flock to prepare themselves for death, and not to fear torture. He partook of the reserved Gifts he carried with him, then communed all the men, women, and children with the Holy and Life-Giving Mysteries of Christ. Then the bishop and the judges summoned the Orthodox to appear before them once more, demanding that they convert to Catholicism. When they refused to do so, they were dragged back to the river and pushed through the hole in the ice that they had cut to bless the water. So they all suffered and died for Christ, Who bestowed on them crowns of unfading glory. During the spring floods, the incorrupt bodies of the holy martyrs, including the fully-vested body of the hieromartyr Isidore, were found by Russian merchants journeying along the river bank. They buried the saints around the church of Saint Nicholas. Although people began to venerate these saints shortly after their death, they were not officially glorified by the Church until 1897. St. Germanus the Patriarch of Constantinople Commemorated on May 12 Saint Germanus, Patriarch of Constantinople, was born at Constantinople in the seventh century. His father, a prominent senator, was killed by order of the emperor Constantine Pogonatos (668-685). The young Germanus was emasculated and sent to a monastery, where he studied Holy Scripture. Because of the sanctity of his life, Germanus was made bishop in the city of Cyzicus. Saint Germanus rose up in defense of the Orthodox Faith against the iconoclast heretics. He was later made Patriarch of Constantinople. Saint Germanus continued to stand up against the iconoclasts and to their spokesman, the heretical emperor Leo III the Isaurian (717-741), but the contest was unequal. He was forced to put his omophorion upon the altar table in the sanctuary, and to resign the archpastoral throne. Then the enraged emperor, who accused the Patriarch of heresy the day before, sent soldiers, who beat the saint and threw him out of the patriarchal residence. Saint Germanus was Patriarch for fourteen years and five months. He went to a monastery, where he spent the remaining days of his life. The holy Patriarch Germanus died in the year 740, at age ninety-five, and was buried in the Chora monastery in Constantinople. Afterwards, his relics were transferred to France. At the Seventh Ecumenical Council (787), the name of Patriarch Germanus was included in the diptychs of the saints. He wrote a “Meditation on Church Matters or Commentary on the Liturgy;” also an explanation of the difficult passages of Holy Scripture, and another work on the rewards of the righteous after death. His important work on the various heresies that had arisen since apostolic times, and on the church councils that took place during the reign of the emperor Leo the Iconoclast, provides a wealth of historical information. There are also three letters from the Patriarch about the veneration of icons, which were read at the Seventh Ecumenical Council. His other works include hymns in praise of the saints, discourses on the Feasts of the Entry into the Temple, the Annunciation and the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, and on the restoration of the church in honor of the Placing of the Venerable Zone of the Most Holy Theotokos. Troparion — Tone 4 O God of our Fathers,/Take not away Your mercy from us,/But ever act towards us according to Your kindness,/And by the prayers of Your saints,/Guide our lives in peace. Kontakion — Tone 4 Come, O faithful, let us sing a worthy hymn of praise/To honor the glorious Bishops, Epiphanius and Germanus./They enlightened the minds of those living without faith,/While presenting the great mysteries of God to the faithful,/Explaining True Belief with great wisdom! скрыть способы оплаты скрыть способы оплаты Подпишитесь на рассылку Православие.Ru Рассылка выходит два раза в неделю: Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

Flame of faith: Stillwater, OK church welcomes holy fire from Jerusalem Source: Stillwater News Press May 21, 2017 Ukrainian Orthodox worshipers light candles from the Holy Fire brought from Jerusalem in St. Volodymyr Cathedral during the April 15 ceremony of the Holy Fire in Kiev, Ukraine. Photo: AP/Sergei Chuzavkov      Each year, thousands of Christians gather at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem to witness a miracle that sparks a flame of faith they share with believers around the world. The members of St. Nino Equal to the Apostles Orthodox Christian Church in Stillwater are sharing in that miracle this year. It begins in a unique church complex located in the Old City of Jerusalem that surrounds two of the holiest spots in Christianity: Golgotha, the hill where Jesus of Nazareth is said to have been crucified and the rock tomb where he was buried. The site is shared by the Greek Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic, Roman Catholic, Coptic Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox and Syrian Orthodox churches in a sometimes uneasy partnership. The Holy Fire is said to appear miraculously in the tomb of the resurrected Jesus each year on the Saturday before Pascha or Easter, as celebrated according to the Orthodox calendar. The Patriarch of Jerusalem, one of the leaders of the Eastern Orthodox Church, enters the tomb, prays and waits until the Holy Fire manifests itself on the stone where the body of Jesus was wrapped. The faithful light candles from the flame to carry to their homes and churches. They say the flame doesn’t burn when you touch it for about the first 30 minutes and photos taken in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher show smiling people holding their faces and hands in the flame. The flame then begins its journey around the world. The 90th anniversary of the Schism of Tylawa: Reunion of Eastern Catholics with the Orthodox Church      In the middle of September 2016, Polish Orthodox believers celebrated the 90th anniversary of the returning of the people of Lemkos to the Orthodox Church from the Uniate Church. A small village of Tylawa located on the border between Poland and Slovakia was the center of the celebrations. The village of Tylawa is a significant place for the Polish part of the Subcarpathian region and for all the Polish Orthodox Church. In the autumn of 1926 the residents of the village who are the people of Lemkos (Rusyns) announced their desire to return and reunite with the Orthodox Church from the Uniate Church. Within a few years of this event almost 50 thousand Lemkos decided to support the decision of the Tylawa residents and to return to Orthodoxy as well. The descendants of these people came these days to Tylawa to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the so-called schism of Tylawa together with guests from Romania, . Rusyns adopted Eastern Rite Christianity in the middle of the 9th century. Many laity and even some representatives of the Uniate clergy living in the Carpathians considered themselves Orthodox Christians even before the schism of Tylawa. Yet massive liturgical changes initiated by Uniate clergy from Galicia together with Ukrainian nationalist propaganda made Lemkos abandon the Eastern Catholic Church. The massive return of the Lemkos to Orthodoxy was preceded by the activity of the martyr Maxim Gorlitsky. Having been killed by an Austrian army officer for the Orthodox Christian faith, he was heard shouting before his death: “Long live holy Orthodoxy, long live holy Russia!” Bishop Paisios of Gorlice told journalists during the celebrations " “Orthodoxy burst as a flame in the hearts of believers, both of the people who heard the words of the martyr and of the people who learned about them and this flame embraced our whole country.
