Tweet Нравится Holy Hieromartyr Kozman (†1630) Memory 18 (31) July Over the centuries the monastic complex founded by St. Davit of Gareji became a spiritual and cultural center for all of Georgia. Many of the faithful flocked there with a desire to serve Christ. Among them was the hieromonk Kozman, who would end his earthly life as a martyr. Few details of the life of Holy Martyr Kozman have been preserved. According to the Georgian catholicos Anton, St. Kozman was a learned and righteous ascetic, well-versed in the canons of the Orthodox Church. St. Kozman composed a set of “Hymns to the Great-Martyr Queen Ketevan” but his work has not been preserved. According to the 19th-century historian Platon Ioseliani, Hieromonk Kozman was taken captive and tortured to death in the year 1630, when the Dagestanis were carrying out a raid on the Davit-Gareji Wilderness. Thou didst give thyself up to many tribulations, O Holy Father Kozman, and didst appear as a holy hieromartyr before Christ our God. Intercede on behalf of all those who honor thy holy name! In Father Dimitry’s view, computer games, the modern variety and " all the disgusting things existing in our society” incite children " to horrible crimes. " " Half a century will pass and all that we are building today, from spaceships to nuclear-powered submarines, will not be needed by anyone because there will be no one to operate all this, " the archpriest believes. The day before, president of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov proposed to cut off the internet throughout the republic of Chechnya in order to protect young people from extremist sermons. 24 октября 2014 г. Catholic, Orthodox Churches to try to overcome millennium-long disagreement/Православие.Ru Catholic, Orthodox Churches to try to overcome millennium-long disagreement Moscow, September 22, 2010 - Interfax A joint international commission on dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church, which began in Vienna on Tuesday, will discuss the Pope's primacy in the first millennium. " This is the most complicated subject in the dialogue between the Orthodox and the Catholics, because the attitude toward the bishop of Rome's ministering is key for the modern Catholic Church, " Hegumen Philipp (Ryabykh) representing the Russian Orthodox Church at the session told Interfax. The presumption that the Pope has ecumenical jurisdiction goes against Orthodox ecclesiology, which teaches that, while the Orthodox Church preserves unity of faith and church governance, it still consists of several local churches, Father Philipp said, who is a deputy head of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations. The Vienna session continues the discussion that was started in Cyprus in 2009. " A draft document was drawn up for the commission's session last year, and the commission started to consider it but did not finish this process, as the Orthodox had a lot of objections to this text. We expect that the discussion in Vienna on the text of this document will also be quite intensive, " he said. " Our delegation's goal is to make sure that this document reflects the Orthodox position and rules out any ambiguities, compromises and wrong interpretations of the patristic views on the bishop of Rome's ministering, " the priest said. While it is difficult to reach a consensus on this issue, " this theme should be discussed, " because " this is what separates the Catholics and the Orthodox above all, " he said. " It needs to be said that the Catholics did not agree to discuss this issue with the Orthodox [Church] for a long time, knowing how radical differences in its interpretation are. The fact that the late Pope John Paul II and then Pope Benedict XVI agreed that this issue be discussed by the commission is quite a benevolent step on the part of the Catholics toward the Orthodox [Church], " he said.

Metropolitan Onuphry Talks about True Patriotism and Nationalism His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kyiv and All Ukraine believes that all of us should be patriots Photo: news.church.ua Nationalism breeds division, while true patriotism is manifested in love of God and others, believes His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine. “Nationalism is when someone focuses on the earthly… It begins, in the best case, with a country—Russia, Ukraine… In Russia, they say that the Russian nationality is the highest, the best; in Ukraine, they say that Ukrainian is the best nationality,” His Beatitude noted in an interview published on the  Korsun Desert  YouTube channel, reports the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Information and Education Department. However, the manifestation of nationalism often does not end there; “it goes further,” Met. Onuphry emphasized. Next, the North and the South and the Center begin to claim preeminence, “and it gets to the point where it divides the family,” the Metropolitan continued. And then, a person begins to divide within himself. On the one hand, he understands that God created man from the dust, and on the other, he begins to think that he is really something. Such an internal war can overflow and create conflicts in the family, in villages, in cities, and in the world. “Thus, the beginning of war is division,” His Beatitude concludes. On the other hand, all should be true patriots, the Metropolitan continued. “A patriot is one who loves his father and mother. ‘Patre’ means father. We should all be patriots, because we should love our father and mother. It’s written in the commandments:  Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee  (Ex. 20:12). If a man honors his father, then he honors others as well—your father. I honor my father, but I also honor your father, because I know that it’s your father, and through him God gave you life, and other fathers and mothers,” His Beatitude explained.

Archpriest Paul Shafran, Pastor Emeritus (retired), Saint Vladimir Orthodox Church in Trenton, NJ, reached his 100th birthday on July 2, 2022.  That day was marked by a celebration hosted by his family, held at the church and parish social hall next door.  His Eminence  Archbishop Michael , of New York and the Diocese of New York and New Jersey, presided at the celebration of the hierarchical Divine Liturgy in the morning.  Concelebrating with His Eminence and Father Paul were:  Priest Volodymyr Chaikivskiy, Rector, Saint Vladimir’s Church, Archpriest Chad Hatfield, President of Saint Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, Archpriest Daniel Skvir, Holy Transfiguration Chapel, Princeton, NJ, Archpriest Michael Sochka, Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Pittsburgh, PA, Deacon Stephan Karlgut and Deacon Bohdan Chaikivskiy, along with several subdeacons and altar servers.  Also in attendance was Archpriest James Parsells, Rector, Saints Peter and Paul Church, Manville, NJ. His Beatitude  Metropolitan Tikhon , and Archpriest Joseph Lickwar, Chancellor of the NYNJ Diocese and Rector, Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral, Jersey City, NJ, had both been planning to attend, but changes in their schedules required them to be elsewhere that day.  Archpriest Stephen Kopestonsky, Retired, and Archpriest Serge Lukianov, Rector, Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Howell, NJ, also had to cancel their attendance due to last-minute changes in their schedules. Archbishop Michael’s sermon focused on the life and responsibilities of a priest, the sacrifices required of any man who answers this high calling to continue the work of the apostles, and the need for our prayers — for Father Paul, who has turned “100 years young” with the “glory of the priesthood radiating from his very soul” — and for every priest, every day, to support them in the challenges they face.  At the conclusion of the majestic service with responses sung by a full beautiful choir, on behalf of Metropolitan Tikhon, Archbishop Michael presented Father Paul with a Grammota signed by His Beatitude and all members of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the OCA, expressing their “Archpastoral gratitude by invoking God’s blessing” upon Father Paul for his 75 years in the Holy Priesthood and his 100th birthday.  On behalf of the NYNJ Diocese, His Eminence presented Father Paul with a palitsa and two grammotas, commemorating Father Paul’s 100th birthday and his upcoming 75th anniversary of ordination to the Holy Priesthood (Dec. 28, 2022), and a third grammota to both Father Paul and Matushka Mary for their upcoming 75th wedding anniversary (Nov. 27, 2022).

SYOSSET, NY [OCA] Today—July 22, 2014—marks the 22nd anniversary the repose of Protopresbyter John Meyendorff, Dean of Saint Vladimir’s Seminary from 1984 until 1992. A better way to speak of Father John’s repose would be to say that he died “in hope of the resurrection.” These words are used in Orthodox prayers for the departed. Father John’s theological vision, in accord with the great Christian theologians, affirmed and celebrated the dynamism of our life and our movement toward the resurrection. In remembering Father John and reflecting on his life and ministry, it is clear that he was a theologian of depth and a teacher of excellence. In this he witnessed to Christ, to the Gospel, to the Orthodox Faith. He exemplified intellectual integrity and seriousness and was allergic to untruth in any form. Theology and teaching were not “academic” endeavors for Father John. He placed his intellect and his teaching in the service of the Church. In this sense, he was as much a pastor as he was a theologian and teacher. During the years of his labors as theologian and historian, teacher and lecturer, Father John achieved respect and recognition around the world in the Orthodox Church, in the ecumenical world, and in academia. Among the Orthodox Churches, his voice articulated the vision of the Orthodox Church in America, affirming the imperative need for unity and mission. In the ecumenical and academic worlds, he articulated and bore witness to the Orthodox vision of God’s creation and the meaning and content of human life in light of the biblical teaching on the image and likeness of God in each human person. As editor of The Orthodox Church newspaper for 20 years, Father John made a major contribution to public discussion of the challenges facing the Orthodox Church in America and around the world. He saw his service as editor as a continuation of his task as teacher of theology and history. He knew that an educated and informed clergy and laity were necessary for a healthy Church. His birth and education in France were no obstacle to his love for America. On the contrary, he entered fully into the experience of American Orthodoxy, understanding its challenges and appreciating its gifts and possibilities.

Metropolitan Onuphry: Trials Are Given to Us for Our Spiritual Perfection The preaching of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called inspired our people, who have overcome all trials with dignity said His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry, Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, in his sermon during the Divine Liturgy at the Dormition Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra on December 13, 2020, the 27th Sunday after Pentecost, the commemoration day of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called,  reports the Information and Education Department of the UOC. According to Metropolitan Onuphry, the Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called is our teacher, educator and intercessor. The seeds of faith, sown by him on this land, have given fertile sprouts at different times. “Today nearly all of our people are baptized in the Name of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity: the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. We believe with honor that we are spiritual children of the Apostle Andrew. But we must remember that in order to be true children of the Apostle Andrew, and to be his followers, we must try to fulfill the laws, rules, and teachings of St. Andrew in our lives,” said His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry. As the metropolitan noted, the Holy Apostle Andrew brought to this land a message about the sacrifice of Divine love, and this message inspired people. “For God so loved the world that “He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”(John 3:16). This commandment, this message about the sacrifice of Divine love inspired our people, raised them to a new level of spiritual development. And history shows that the people who populate these places have gone through all of the trials that God had sent us for our spiritual improvement with dignity. We have withstood everything, we have endured everything and we believe and hope for the mercy of God that [we will see] the times to come,” His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry emphasized. At the end of his sermon, the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church noted that if we live according to the Sacred laws – the laws of love and mercy – then we will really be followers of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called.

Metropolitan Tikhon presides at the Divine Liturgy at St. Nicholas Russian Cathedral in New York City on the day of its patronal feast Source: OCA Photo: OCA On Sunday, December 19, 2021, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, and at the invitation of His Grace Matthew Bishop of Sourozh and Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA & Canada, His Beatitude  Metropolitan Tikhon  presided at the Divine Liturgy at New York City’s Saint Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral on the day of the Cathedral’s patronal feast. Concelebrating with His Beatitude were Archpriest George Konyev, Chancellor of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, Archpriest Alexander Golubov, Igumen Nikodim, Dean of the Cathedral and Secretary of the Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes of the USA, and Priest Alessandro Margheritino, Secretary of the Orthodox Church in America. Metropolitan Tikhon’s delegation included Deacon Peter Ilchuk, Executive Secretary to the Metropolitan. After the Divine Liturgy, Igumen Nikodim shared the greetings of Bishop Matthew who welcomed His Beatitude, and noted his regrets for not being able to participate in the celebration. Metropolitan Tikhon offered his greetings to both His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and Bishop Matthew, thanking them for the opportunity to celebrate the Divine Liturgy on such beautiful and joyous day in which we honor the beloved Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia. His Beatitude also thanked Father George and the Cathedral’s clergy for their hospitality and love. In his homily at the end of the Divine Liturgy , His Beatitude pointed out that, “In today’s Gospel, we read that the crowds gathered around the Lord Jesus Christ and ‘sought to touch him, for power went out from him and healed them all.’ Perhaps, hearing this, we wish that we, too, could have seen Jesus with our eyes, touched him with our hands, and have received healing for the wounds of our bodies, our souls, our hearts. But of course, the Lord is always present to us, not just spiritually, in our inner being, but physically, through the saints.” Metropolitan Tikhon then remarked that, “Wherever there is sanctity, there is Jesus Christ. And in some cases, in accordance with God’s providence, the holiness of a person is so great that, even after his death, his body remains with us, visibly full of God’s healing grace, always making Christ’s power present in our lives. This is the case with Saint Nicholas.”
