In Memory of Hieromonk Seraphim (Rose) Archpriest Vladimir Vigilyansky, Archpriest Andrei Tkachev, Hieromonk Symeon (Tomachinsky) Books by Father Seraphim (Rose) played a very important role during the period of my life when I was coming into the Church. When I read during the early 1980s in samizdat Orthodoxy and the Religion of the Future and Signs of the End Times, I was stunned by his ability to connect and place into Christian context the scattered and multi-faceted phenomena of modern times. He taught me that that the history of mankind, indeed the very life of every person is filled with meaning. Teachings of the Elders of the Glinsk Hermitage Teachings of the Elders of the Glinsk Hermitage The most noteworthy aspect of the history of the monastery was the fact that its monastics were able to endure through all of the deprivations and trials of the awful decades, and to return to the monastery not the glory of its former magnificence, but rather the spirit of true asceticism, eldership, and service to the world. This permitted the Glinsk Hermitage to function for a short time – from 1942 to 1961, when it was once again shut down – as a manifestation of unusual spiritual strength, at whose center were the elders © 1999-2016 Православие.Ru

Venerable Eleazar of Anzersk Island, Solovki Commemorated on January 13/26 Saint Eleazar of Anzersk was born in the city of Kozelsk into the merchant family Severiukov. With the blessing of his parents he went off to the Solovki monastery, where he received monastic tonsure from the igumen Saint Irenarchus (July 17). At the monastery he displayed an astonishing artistic gift: he learned woodcarving and he took part in the embellishment of the Transfiguration Cathedral. With the blessing of the igumen, he went to the island of Anzersk in 1612, where he became a hermit, devoting himself to constant prayer and meditation on God. In order to obtain subsistence for himself on the island wilderness, Saint Eleazar carved wooden cups, which he left at the dock. On the cups he wrote a message requesting food. Fishermen left bread and other supplies for the ascetic, and they were rewarded with a great catch of fish. In the year 1616 Saint Eleazar was elevated to schemamonk. Disciples gathered around the saint wishing to live near him and benefit from his instruction. He organized a skete with a strict rule of monastic life following the ancient form. Monastic cells were built far away from one another, and the hermits gathered together only for Saturday and Sunday services. Among the disciples of Saint Eleazar was the hieromonk Nikita, the future Patriarch Nikon. Tsar Michael (1613-1645), learning of the saint’s ascetic life, summoned him to Moscow. Saint Eleazar predicted the birth of a son, and in return the Tsar generously gave him help to build a stone church on the island dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and also a monastery. Saint Eleazar loved books. He compiled three books, “Flower Gardens,” collecting edifying sayings and examples from various sources. He also wrote a commentary on the Rule for monastic cell life. Saint Eleazar died in great old age, forseeing the time of his death. It is not known how old he was, but he lived at Ansersk for forty years, and he was at Solovki for some time before that. Tweet Нравится Abortion is dreadful murder says Archimandrite Ephraim Holy Mount Athos, September 30, 2016      In the course of shooting the documentary “Athos – for Life!” the crew of Sobor.by had the opportunity to visit Holy Mount Athos and to talk with Archimandrite Ephraim, Abbot of the great Vatopedi Monastery. The elder answered a question about abortion. “You need to work hard and to do your best in order to live according to Church rules, if you want to seriously combat abortion. Today people easily kill each other – parents kill their own children. We are praying on Holy Mount Athos, and you should try and explain to people that abortion is dreadful murder. A heavy responsibility lies on the shoulders of those who allow abortions. A crime is committed by physicians, parents and the woman who gets an abortion. Abortions are prohibited in Muslim countries. But, unfortunately, in our countries where we keep the truth of Orthodoxy they are legalized – and that is very sad. That is why all of us must struggle with the murder which is called abortion,” he said. Translated by Dmitry Lapa Pravoslavie.ru 3 октября 2016 г. Giorgi was elevated to the rank of abbot after St. Ekvtime left the monastery to travel to Jerusalem. Under his leadership, the main church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos was constructed. Venerable Amphilochius of Pângrai      Holy Venerable Amphilochius from Pângrai was born in 1487, in ara de Sus, Moldavia. He began his monastic life in his youth at Moldovia Monastery, wherefrom he came to Pângrai in 1508. There all the members of the community elected him abbot, so that he led them for fifty-six years. Hieromonk Anastasios from Moldovia, who knew him well, speaks about his life: “He chose to live in monasticism ever since he was a child, having been esteemed by all the people of his time for his good deeds. He was a very good writer, fasting, patient and striving to live a spiritual life.” Due to his efforts, Christ our Lord and St. Demetrius, the protector of the monastery, commanded the ruling prince Alexandru Lapuneanu (1552-1561; 1564-1568) to build a new church at Pângrai in place of the old wooden one which the Turks had burned down. The church was consecrated by Metropolitan Gregory of Suceava in 1560. In 1566, the saint gathered all his spiritual sons around, gave them his last advice, appointed Hieromonk Teodorit as igumen in his stead and retired to his first monastery, Moldovia. There Blessed Amphilochius became a hermit by the name of Enoch and lived for four more years. In 1570, having known beforehand the time of his death, he received Holy Communion and fell asleep in the Lord. His disciples buried him. On March 6, 2008 the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church canonized Venerable Simeon and Amphilochius, to be celebrated on September 7/20. Through the prayers of the venerable Saints Simeon and Amphilochius, Lord Jesus Christ our God have mercy on us. Amen. Troparion, tone 3: Oh, Venerable Fathers Simeon and Amphilochius, you who did enlighten the Carpathian woods through your prayers and filled the whole valley of Bistria with a spiritual aroma, close advisers of the ruling princes and radiant torches of the monastics and pious faithful, pray to God for us, who celebrate with love your holy commemoration. 20 сентября 2016 г. This labor was carried with his community when it relocated to Romania in 1764, at Dragomirna, and would be constitutive of the mission of the Paisian houses. In 1775 the Austrian forces captured Bukovina, and Paisy was forced to relocate once more. In 1779 he was given charge of the monastery of Neamt. His community here soon numbered more than 700. After the publication of the Greek Philokalia in 1782, Paisy made a version in Slavonic (Dobrotoloubie) which from its appearance in 1793 electrified the Russian monastic world. In 1790 he was given the Great Schema and made archimandrite, and died at Neamt on November 15, 1794, aged 72. Mount Athos and the Romanian Church were the first to venerate him as a saint, and this was followed by the Russian Synod in 1988. Paisy’s main labors were the dissemination of Philokalic texts, but he also presided over a radical reorganization of the monastic Typikon or structure of the daily life in Athonite-style nasteries. His purpose (causing controversy at the time) was to bring back into cenobitic houses a greater flexibility which would allow monastics greater possibilities for solitude and prayer. The later Russian hesychastic tradition owes much to him, including such figures such as such as St. Seraphim of Sarov, the Optina Elders, Bishop Ignatius Brianchaninov, and St. Theophan the Recluse. St. Hypatius the Wonderworker and Bishop of Gangra Commemorated on March 31 Hieromartyr Hypatius, Bishop of Gangra, was bishop of the city of Gangra in Paphlagonia (Asia Minor). In the year 325 he participated in the First Ecumenical Council at Nicea, at which the heresy of Arius was anathematized. When Saint Hypatius was returning in 326 from Constantinople to Gangra, followers of the schismatics Novatus and Felicissimus fell upon him in a desolate place. The heretics ran him through with swords and spears, and threw him into a swamp. Like the Protomartyr Stephen, Saint Hypatius prayed for his murderers. An Arian woman struck the saint on the head with a stone, killing him. The murderers hid his body in a cave, where a Christian who kept straw there found his body. Recognizing the bishop’s body, he hastened to the city to report this, and the inhabitants of Gangra piously buried their beloved archpastor. After his death, the relics of Saint Hypatius were famous for numerous miracles, particularly for casting out demons and for healing the sick. From of old the hieromartyr Hypatius was particularly venerated in the Russian land. Thus in the year 1330 the Ipatiev monastery was built at Kostroma, on the place where the Mother of God appeared with the Pre-eternal Christ Child, the Apostle Philip, and the hieromartyr Hypatius, Bishop of Gangra. This monastery later occupied a significant place in the spiritual and social life of the nation, particularly during the Time of Troubles. The ancient copies of the Life of the hieromartyr Hypatius were widely distributed in Russian literature, and one of these was incorporated into THE READING MENAION of Metropolitan Macarius (1542-1564). In this Life there is an account of the appearance of the Savior to Saint Hypatius on the eve of the martyr’s death. The entry for the saint’s Feast consists of his Life, some prayers, and words of praise and instruction. The pious veneration of Saint Hypatius was also expressed in Russian liturgical compositions. During the nineteenth century a new service was written for the hieromartyr Hypatius, distinct from the services written by Saint Joseph the Studite, contained in the March MENAION. 291 Греческий текст в PG 111. 628—888; есть независимое издание, местами более полное, архимандрита Андреаса Политопулоса (Афины, 1911), с которым я также сверялся. Наиболее подробный анализ см. в: Panagiotis S. Marlines, Но Salos Hag. Andreas kai he Saloteta sten Orthodoxe Ecclessia (Athens: Ekdoseis Tenos, 1986), автор которой, в противовес наиболее распространенной точке зрения, пытается доказать, что Андрей вполне мог быть исторической личностью, жившей во второй половине IX века. Кроме того, см.: Jose Crosdidierr de Matons, «Les themes d edification dans la Vie d " Andre Salos " " Travaux et Memoires3 (1970), 277—328: John. T. Murray, A Study of the Life of Andreas, the Fool for the Sake of Christ (Borna – Leipzig 1910). Seraphim " " s Seraphim.
