— So all people will voluntarily install such trackers on their phones? — Even if not all people will do it, it will still be helpful. It’s like with vaccination: the part of the population that is vaccinated protects both itself and the other part that is not vaccinated. I think that non-governmental control over people’s movement is technically quite realistic. Like other people, I am not at all eager to report all my movements to the Federal Safety Service. It would be perfect to use all these measures in combination. Some infections will be prevented by hand-washing, some by masks, some by contact tracing, some by mobile devices, and some by identifying the “hot spots” based on the genomes of the virus. Then it will be possible not to stay at home waiting for vaccines, but actually walk the streets without risking the lives of our grandparents. Russian Church Gives Modern Medical Equipment to Antiochian Patriarchate Photo: mospat.ru With the support of the Russian Orthodox Church, new medical equipment was handed over to the Al-Hosn hospital in Syria. The hospital, which is under the patronage of the Orthodox Church of Antioch, treats about 20 thousand patients annually. Artificial ventilation devices, X-ray equipment, as well as a powerful power plant were delivered to the hospital by the Russian military, reports the official website of the Russian Orthodox Church. Photo: mospat.ru The equipment was provided in response to an appeal from His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. The Foundation for the Support of Christian Culture and Heritage took part in the charity event. “We are very grateful to the Russian people, Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Russian army, and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. We are grateful to Patriarch John of Antioch and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, who are cooperating closely together, and as a result, in this difficult time, serious assistance is provided to our Christian communities,” said  Khaled Yazidzhi, the chief doctor of the hospital. The Al-Hosn hospital is located in the province of Homs, one of the regions in Syria that was affected the most during the fighting. This medical institution specializes in providing emergency care, and also has departments of general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic and plastic surgery, gastroenterology, internal diseases, pediatrics, gynecology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, cardiology, oncology, neurology and infectious diseases. The hospital employs 40 doctors, as well as 100 nurses and technicians. With the help of patrons, the Patriarchate of Antioch built a new six-story building in order to increase the number of beds (now 50 people can receive inpatient medical care there at the same time). The work on the sixth floor has now been completed. Thanks to the donated equipment, it will soon be possible to open a cardiac surgery department and a catheterization laboratory there. Russian specialists will help Syrian doctors install and configure the new medical equipment.

Primates of the Church of Alexandria and Polish Orthodox Church Issue Appeal Concerning the Situation of Orthodoxy in Ukraine Source: DECR Photo: spzh.new On 19 September 2018, His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa arrived in Poland at the invitation of His Beatitude Metropolitan Sawa of Warsaw and All Poland to begin his official visit to the Polish Orthodox Church. ‘Gay marriage’ is against human nature and Europe’s human rights convention: Greek justice minister December 11, 2014      Any proposal to install “gay marriage” in Greek law would be contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights, said Haralambos Athanasiou, the country’s justice minister, this week. He added that his country should not comply with EU demands to create civil unions or legally recognized same-sex partnerships. When the Convention “speaks about marriage it speaks [of it being] between a man and woman,” Athanasiou told Greek television. “We are a country that respects traditions, respects human nature, and it’s not possible at least with this government and this ministry, to permit marriage [for same-sex partners.]” “It’s a little dangerous to simply speak of civil unions. The matter is not easy. The problem is what are the consequences going to be? … Are we going to go as far as talking about adoption [by same-sex partners] next?” he asked. The fact that most other EU countries have created such laws is no reason for Greece to do so, he said, adding that a committee has been formed to examine the issues of social security insurance, pensions and inheritance. The adoption and custody of children will have to be looked at from a religious, political, and societal perspective, he said. “Our country has structures,” he said. “We have to look at it from the religious point of view, the political point of view, the social point of view. The ministry of justice will not, under the pressure of anyone, examine such an issue without calmness and composure.” The denunciation from Athanasiou comes in the midst of a parliamentary push for a change in the law. In November last year, the European Court of Human Rights ruled against Greece in a complaint from homosexual activists, ordering the country to start registering same-sex partnerships. The socialist coalition government responded with a bill to extend the existing law to same-sex partners. Although that first bill failed, the government announced again in November 2014 that the Greek Family Code would be amended to include same-sex partners.

About Pages Проекты «Правмира» Raising Orthodox Children to Orthodox Adulthood The Daily Website on How to be an Orthodox Christian Today Twitter Telegram Parler RSS Donate Navigation Sinner alert. Repent immediately! Source: Ramblings of a Redneck Priest Archpriest John Moses (+2019) 13 October 2019 Fr. Gabriel Weller is  a business man. He founded and operates Hawk Security. The company installs all kinds of security systems. I worked for the company for a little while, and so I got to see how the technicians figure out what kind of system is needed and then how it will be installed. They can install little units on every window and door so that if anyone opens a window when the system is on, the alarm will sound (and it’s a very loud alarm). They can install cameras that you can watch online. They can install units that detect motion and even detectors that are tuned to frequency of breaking glass. Once it’s set up, and you turn it on at night, you will free pretty secure against anyone sneaking in. Even more, the system is monitored so that if it’s set off, and no one turns it off with a security code, the police and fire department are called immediately. We put a security system in our church. I told Father that instead of the alarm saying, “Intruder alert.  Intruder alert! Leave immediately!” I wanted to change it to “Sinner alert. Sinner alert. Repent immediately!” Security is an important issue in life, for without a sense of security, we live with fear and anxiety. So, we try to be wise and arrange life to be emotionally, financially, mentally, and physically secure. The problem is that security is an illusion. Despite our best efforts life is filled with surprises and we are reminded that much of life is beyond our control. It can be quite a shock because we love the illusion that we are in control and life is secure. The thief comes in the night, the Lord said, when we are asleep. In the pre-Hawk Security days, the only way to catch the thief was to stay awake. Physically, this is almost impossible, however the Lord is using this analogy to make a spiritual point – we must be awake or the thief will come to take what we have.

A Baby-Friendly Parish “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 10:14) Does your parish welcome little children? Of course you love kids. Like mine, yours is a probably a church where adults rejoice to worship with young ones, and where even the grumps- like Sounding blogger Bev Cooke  – give thanks for them anyhow. I’ll take for granted that your church likes kids. But that’s not my question. Even though you like having children around, does the physical set-up of your church make it burdensome for little children to participate in the services? As parents of a ten-month-old, my wife Daphne and I have discovered all sorts of new things about our parish. Our son loves coming to services. But sometimes we dread bringing him, because some things about our church- like yours, perhaps- make it especially burdensome to have a small child in church. Father and Parish Council have started on some small improvements that will make things much nicer for us and other families with babies. Here are some questions that will help you see whether your parish “suffers” very young children, or whether it’s a forbidding environment for families with babies. Is there a changing table? Do you ever miss out on post-Liturgy conversations with parents of babies, because they’ve made a beeline for the car before coffee hour’s even started? Chances are, they dread changing their child’s diaper on a chair, on the floor, or on a table where others are eating. Install a changing table, and you’ll have your friends back again. You’ve probably seen fold-down changing tables in restaurants and shops. They take up little space, and are conveniently located in the bathroom where parents have easy access to a toilet, sink and garbage can. Wherever you install a changing table, it needs to be within reach of a sink and a trash can. Don’t just slap one up in the women’s washroom- make sure Dad can change baby as well! Is there a private, comfortable nursing area? Sounding blogger Tony Alexiou  reminded us what Pope Francis recently reminded Catholics  – that church is a place where mothers ought to feel comfortable feeding their children.

A resident of Kondopoga climbed Mt. Elbrus to help a center for people with disabilities. Now, they will install new windows there Source: Pravmir (Russian) The raised money was only enough to replace three windows, but fundraising continues. Photo: “Overcome” center Roman Unukaynen climbed Elbrus, the highest mountain in Russia. He leads the “Overcome” center in Kondopoga, which conducts classes for people with mental disorders. To replace the old windows in the building that were no longer opening, he announced a fundraising while he was making the ascent. To replace windows, the center needs more than 100 thousand rubles, according to the Agency for Social Information (ASI). “ I, Roman Unukaynen, the manager of the Karelia Region Public Organization “Overcome”, decided to climb Elbrus to draw attention to the efforts of our wards. For me, climbing the highest mountain in Russia is equivalent to their daily efforts. And I am ready to take you with me on this journey. To do this, you need to make a donation to our organization”, – wrote the organization manager in social networks. Photo: VK.com The center has been in need of replacing windows for five years. It is not possible to solve the problem with grant money: it is unearmarked funds. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the situation has become more complicated: rooms need to be disinfected and ventilated, but we could not open the windows. — The idea came up to make this summit ascent a symbol of the efforts of our wards with chronic mental disorders. They want to adapt and live a normal human life, – says Unukaynen. Every 10 meters of climbing up was equal to 200 rubles for replacing windows. All the time Roman was climbing, volunteers were raising funds in social networks. About half of the expected amount was raised. The ascent to Elbrus ended faster than the fundraising. This amount is enough to replace three windows. However, residents of Kondopoga will help the “Overcome” center. A local park decided to allocate part of the collected funds to the center, so that it could raise the necessary money faster.

Five Million Dollars to Soundproof Greek Church Adelaide, May 15, 2013 The federal government of Australia decided to offer five million dollars to the Greek Community of Thebarton in Adelaide, in order to install soundproofing to the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. The soundproofing of the church was considered necessary in order to protect parishioners from the noise of aircraft that take off and land at Adelaide airport. Labor MP for Hindmarsh, Steve Georganas, said that the Greek residents of Thebarton who regularly use the church of St. Nicolas for their religious needs are happy with the government’s decision. Georganas starred in the mobilization of people of Greek descent living in the region in order to install soundproofing to the church, as in some cases the aircraft noise exceeded every acceptable limit. Lighting in Orthodox Churches: Liturgical Principles and Practical Ideas Aidan Hart What are we aiming to achieve when we choose lighting for an Orthodox church? We need a certain amount of light to see, but lighting also creates an ambience, helps to create an inner state. So what ambience are we seeking to create in our churches? These and other questions face parishes and monasteries when they grapple with what electric lighting to install – if indeed any at all, for so often ‘less is more’. If we are not asking the essential question about what atmosphere we are trying to create then we need to be. The lighting required for a boardroom, a library, or a sitting room at home will be different from that in a church. If a church community is not clear in its own mind what end result is required, then the lighting designer whom they employ is likely to opt for the default setting of a secular public building. And this is likely to mean lots of light – too much for an Orthodox church which traditionally has fairly low light levels. Serbian church interior      This article attempts to outline some of the principles of lighting for Orthodox churches. Each church is different, requiring its unique solution, but there are surely timeless principles which, like icon painting, should inform and set the parameters for each task at hand. Of course many of the principles outlined here will also be relevant to church buildings of other traditions. However, as we shall see, the emphasis that Orthodoxy places on icons does create particular lighting requirements. This article was prompted by a recent visit to a large Orthodox cathedral. They had commissioned an experienced company to design and install new lighting as part of a major restoration programme. The results would have been impressive if it were a secular building: all the architectural details of the listed building were splendidly illuminated. But this was a place of worship and not a secular building. The bishop and parish felt that there was too much light. They wanted help to find a solution.
