The plight of child soldiers of the Lord " s Resistance Army/Православие.Ru The plight of child soldiers of the Lord " s Resistance Army Kampala, September 19, 2013 Known for the kidnappings of children that are exploited as soldiers, the Lord " s Resistance Army, since 1986, has maintained a war of opposition against the Government of Uganda. The rebels enter the homes at night and abduct children, easy prey because they are not able to return home alone, are disciplined and strictly comply with the rules. During the night many of these young children seek help in shelters that are situated in distant cities of the Central African Republic and they are the only shelters that can protect them. In a documentary titled " Good Night, Ouma " , tells the story of the young Ugandan commuters that due to the fear of being abducted by the rebels take refuge in " Noah " s Ark " , a specialized center for their protection especially during the most critical hours of the day. During all these years of war, more than 150,000 people have died and nearly 2 million have been forced to live in refugee camps. In the world there are between 250,000 and 300,000 child soldiers who unfortunately do not go to school, are forced to fight and are mistreated. Currently the three African countries where these young victims are concentrated are: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia and South Sudan. Agenzia Fides 25 сентября 2013 г. ... We have to look at our brothers (and we are all brothers, children of the one God, be we baptized or not) as at an icon, the image of God. We must respect the traditions by which people live, apply what is best of them. If tradition contradicts the spirit of Christianity, we have to explain this to people with love, without offending them. For saving the lives of some 700 people, he was recognized posthumously, in 1998, by the State of Israel with an inscription in the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. and on the Righteous Honor Wall at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. Chrysostomos, Metropolitan of Zakynthos ”I will march together with the Jews straight into the gas chamber.” Of course, there is also the timeless survival story of the ONLY Jewish community in all of Europe that didn’t lose a single soul during the Holocaust, on the Greek Island of Zakynthos— thanks to the efforts of the Metropolitan Bishop of the island, Chrysostomos. When asked for the island’s Jews, he offered his own name, and that of the Mayor’s, as the island’s Jews and proceeded to tell the German commandant that he was prepared to march with his Jewish neighbors straight to the gas chambers if that were his destiny. “The Jews of Zakynthos are Greeks, peace-loving and industrious. They are pure-blooded Zakynthians and totally harmless. I beg you to rescind the criminal order.” When the commander remained persistent and threatened Chrysostomos and the mayor with their lives, and severe reprisals against the civilian population of the island, they handed him a scrap of paper with their own two names scribbled on it. “I am at your mercy,” Chrysostomos told the Nazi. “You can arrest me, not them. If this does not satisfy you, then know that I will march together with the Jews straight into the gas chamber.” Three Greek Orthodox hierarchs, each with high-profile positions of moral authority, spoke to their God and responded with what they believed to be their moral and ethical responsibility to save fellow humans— regardless of religious background. Photo from the archive of Irina Chabanova.      Choosing her path By that time Irina Chabanova had already decided what she wanted to be when she grew up, and entered the Ulyanov agriculture school, which was located at that time in the St. Stephen Monastery 2 (now the Holy Trinity-St. Stephen-Ulyanovsk Monastery.—N. P.). Looking at the photographs of that time, Irina Ivanovna showed me where various things were located on the territory of the former monastery: “At the foot of the hill was the cemetery were the clergy were buried. On the burial plots were stone crosses. “Kommuna” was in the former bell tower. “Bessarabia” was what they called the former monastic cells—they were filled with sheep manure. Later I and the other girls cleaned out the monastery rooms and whitewashed the walls. In general, as students of the school we always tried to treat everything that belonged to the monastery with care. We even behaved ourselves in a different manner in the former monastery—I taught them to keep peace among themselves, not to judge, and to forget evil.” Irina’s stand Irina Ivanovna herself followed this rule all her life. Even when she was paralyzed after a trauma and her husband left her with five children, the woman bore it all steadfastly and never became bitter. She believed that the Lord gives strength to endure new sorrows. Irina Ivanovna spent three years in difficult torments, and one day she saw the Mother of God in a dream, who said to her, “Walk.” After this dream the woman little by little began to walk around her apartment using a stool, and after a year she was able to walk independently. Then the woman had to take care of her paralyzed mother and ex-husband, who had been in an accident. Even cancer surrendered before Irina’s resoluteness. “I simply had no time to pay attention to my health, while my family was suffering around me,” she explained. And the disease left—her operation was successful. When many sorrows fall to a person’s lot, even the smallest joys become great happiness. For Irina Ivanovna the former happiness of being able to sing remained with her—now in a veteran’s choir. Hours of cozy solitude are interspersed with clamorous joy when her children and multitudinous grandchildren come to visit, and Irina Ivanovna teaches them to always preserve peace among themselves, never to judge, and always to forget evil. Sand animation film in honor of Chernobyl released (+ VIDEO) Moscow, April 27, 2017      A new sand animation has been released on the website of artist Ksenia Simonova in memory of the victims of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. The short story concerns a family and a mother and a daughter, and is meant to remind us of the thousands of people affected by the explosion. Other sand animations from Simonova are dedicated to St. Ksenia of St. Petersburg, St. Luke of Simferopol, and Royal Martyr Nicholas II, among many others. “My hometown of Evpatoria has always been closely linked with the memory of Chernobyl,” the artist writes. “Children suffering from the Chernobyl accident came to our children’s health center for rehabilitation. We opened the Wormwood Star Museum a few years ago. My generation well knows what I’m talking about; it’s not necessary to explain. I would like our children to know and remember, and grow up with the idea that the world must avoid such terrible catastrophes, to save the planet…” The title “Wormwood Star” refers to the opening of the seventh seal in Revelation chapter 8, when many men die by drinking water turned bitter: And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter (vv. 10-11). The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident which occurred on April 26, 1986 in the No.4 light water graphite moderated reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The destruction had an explosive character, the reactor was completely destroyed, and radioactive substances were released into the surrounding environment. The accident is the largest of its kind in the history of nuclear energy. Tweet Нравится St. Nicholas Church in Merano, Italy transferred to Russian Orthodox Church Moscow, April 5, 2017 Photo: Pravoslavie.ru      On March 31, in Bolzano, the capital city of Italy’s northern Alto-Adige region, the ceremony of signing an agreement to transfer the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Merano to the use of the Russian Orthodox Church was held. Bishop Anthony of Bogorodsk, the administrator of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Italian parishes, signed on behalf of the Russian CHurch, reports the site of the Italian parishes. St. Nicholas Church in Merano is one of the oldest Russian churches in Italy. The Orthodox parish in South Tyrol appeared at the end of the nineteenth century, when these lands were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The first church in honor of St. Nicholas was consecrated in Merano in 1884. A few years later, in 1897, the church was located on the top floor of a two-story annex of the “Villa Borodina” complex. During the First World War the church was closed. Divine services resumed in 1997, being served regularly from that time. Previously, parishioners coordinated their schedule annually with city authorities, but from the time of the transfer service schedules will be coordinated between the Alto-Adige province and the Moscow Patriarchate administration of the Italian parishes. The parish of St. Nicholas has received full freedom to organize its liturgical services, and the right to the permanent use of the church. 5 апреля 2017 г. Archive Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk: the schism provoked by Constantinople is developing outside the folds of our Church 30 November 2020 year 13:53 On November 25, the Synod of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus issued a communique stating that ‘it does not object to the decision’ of Archbishop Chrysostomos of Cyprus who has begun to mention during the liturgy the head of the Ukrainian schismatics Epifaniy Dumenko as primate of the Church of Ukraine. The decision has split the episcopate of Cyprus into two parts. What developments can ensue from this decision, Ekaterina Gracheva, hostess of the Church and World TV program asked the head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk. ‘It is difficult to predict how this schism will develop in the Orthodox world but I would like to emphasize that this schism is happening outside the folds of our Church’, His Eminence Hilarion said, ‘The Russian Orthodox Church remains united and consolidated, her episcopate both in Russia and Ukraine and Belarus and other countries is solid’. Speaking about developments in other Local Orthodox Churches, the DECR chairman stated, ‘We can see that Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople has become the initiator of this schism and is its principal culprit. It was expected that the Churches which look to Constantinople (and these are primarily those which speak Greek, such as those of Greece and Cyprus) would eventually follow Patriarch Bartholomew. He is perceived in these Churches not as first among equals but actually as their chief. Therefore, if he pointed out something to them and insisted on something, they would sooner or later obey it’. However, as far as the Church of Cyprus is concerned, Metropolitan Hilarion believes that the synodal decision made this week has not put an end to the story since the recent developments have shown that there is a serious division in the Synod over the Ukrainian issue. ‘The members of the Synod who voted against the decision have remained unconvinced – they will neither concelebrate with the schismatics nor mention the schismatic leaders during the liturgy; in this regard, they remain very first and staunch. And we will yet see how the situation will develop further within the Orthodox Church of Cyprus’, the DECR chairman summed up his answer. Exhibition, " Overcoming: Russian Church and Soviet authorities " opens in Yaroslavl/Православие.Ru Exhibition, " Overcoming: Russian Church and Soviet authorities " opens in Yaroslavl Yaroslavl, October 8, 2013 The exhibition of exclusive historical materials, " Overcoming: the Russian Church and the Soviet authorities " began its work on October 8 in the gallery of the Dormition Cathedral, reports Sedmitza.ru . The exhibition with this name twice amazed the visitors both in Moscow and Italy and now it has come to Yaroslavl. From October 8 to 22, residents of Yaroslavl will be able to familiarize themselves with the exploits of Orthodoxy during the difficult Soviet period. Unique archival documents, displayed on the exhibition stands, are supplemented with local materials as well—extant items and documents of clergymen and their family members. The exhibition displays the objects that tell exclusively about the earthly life of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Yaroslavl land. The materials that underlie the exhibition were prepared by St. Tikhon " s Orthodox University and the Museum of modern history of Russia. “Fortunately, the time of persecution of the Church in our country is now in the past. But that difficult time is still remembered by those few people who survived beyond repressions, after exiles in labor camps and prisons, together with their descendants. Our duty is to tell the story it in its true colors, " noted Archbishop Veniamin of Rybinsk and Uglich at the press-conference the day before opening of the conference in the Dormition Cathedral. “This exhibition enjoyed great success last autumn in Moscow: it was visited by more than 7,000 people, and it even had to be prolonged three times,” said a co-author of the " Overcoming " exhibition, senior researcher of the Modern Church History department of St. Tikhon " s University Lidia Golovkova. “In August of this year, in Rimini, the Italian version of this exhibition was presented and it broke all attendance records. And this is symbolic: " a time to gather stones " has come, and it means that interest in culture and history is growing in our society.

Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D. Peterson Скачать epub pdf HISTORIANS, ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORIANS, ECCLESIASTICAL. The first ecclesiastical historian whose works survive complete is Eusebius of Caesarea (q.v.). His History of the Church covered the first three centuries of Christianity and is still an invaluable resource. He incorporated into it other works, now lost, such as those of the 2nd-c. church historian Hegesippus, who wrote on Jerusalem and Rome, and probably gave us the list of early Roman popes found in Epiphanius (Haer. 27.6). Subsequent Church historians writing in Greek included: Socrates (d. 439) and Sozomen (d. ca. 450), who carried Eusebius’s story through the Trinitarian controversies of the 4th c.; Theodoret of Cyrrhus (q.v.), who continued into the Christological debates through Chalcedon (q.v.); Zachariah the Rhetor (d. ca. 550), who took the latter controversies through the mid-6th c. from the monophysite side; and Evagrius Scholasticus (d. 593/4), who represented the Chalcedonian side through to the century’s end. Lesser writers include Philostorgius (d. 395) and Gelasius of Caesarea (d. 425) from the Greek side and Joh n of Ephesus (d. 586), who wrote in Syriac (q.v.). Among the Latins, Lactantius (d. 330s) contributed an impressive history of the African Church’s persecutions under the Emperor Diocletian, while Rufinus of Aquileia (d. ca. 410) wrote perhaps the most impressive Church history by a Western writer until the Venerable Bede (d. 735) produced his remarkable History of the English Church. Augustine of Hippo’s (q.v.) City of God, while not a history per se, is nonetheless worth mentioning as the unique theology of history in the patristic age. Finally, Jerome compiled a bibliography of ecclesiastical writers and translated and updated Eusebius’s Chronicle, which is a summary of universal history with dates. Church history continued to be written throughout the Byzantine era (q.v.). But since Church and state (q.v.) came to be practically identified during Byzantium’s medieval period, the histories produced are as much histories of the Empire as of the Christian Church. Examples are the works of Michael Psellos (11th c.) and Anna Comnena (12th c.). Читать далее Источник: The A to Z of the Orthodox Church/Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D.
