Metropolitan Mercurius of Rostov: “The Church is doing its best to help the refugees” Rostov-on-Don, July 9, 2014      The Rostov region in Russia has declared a state of emergency regarding aid to refugees from the Ukraine, and the Church is doing its best to support the arriving people, to help free them of there “stupor and fear”, reported Metropolitan Mercurius of Rostov and Novocherkassk on Wednesday to RIA-Novosti at the press conference, dedicated to celebrations of the 700th anniversary the birth of St. Sergius of Radonezh. “The situation with refugees from the Ukraine is very tense. They keep arriving to the Rostov region and are currently accommodated in camps. From there some of them are then sent to other regions. The region has declared a state of emergency regarding aid to the refugees. This refers to state agencies, the Church, and public organizations. Now we are doing our best,” said Metropolitan Mercurius.      According to him, the Church is taking part in all aid programs for refugees carried out by the state. As far as the Church is concerned, these are mainly issues of spiritual guidance, because people are coming, in very low spirits, crossing the borders in some cases by hidden paths and under shelling, and so it is necessary to strengthen them spiritually. The clergy regularly watch at refugee camps, supplicatory prayer and prayers for the dead are served; people are given help getting to churches in order to pray – this is very important. Priests talk to the people and their fear and stupor disappear little by little,” related the hierarch. The dioceses’ social departments are working very actively on rendering humanitarian aid and fundraising, added Metropolitan Mercurius.      “We are, of course, are not distributing money, but with the funds raised we purchase the main necessities, food and clothes. A priest has called me recently and reported the need of a refrigerator and washing machine for one center of accommodation. They were delivered on the same day. But all in all, the situation in the region is difficult,” noted the metropolitan. As was reported earlier, 25,343 Ukrainian citizens were accommodated on the territory of the Rostov region, including 9,259 children. 11 июля 2014 г. Archive Ukrainian Orthodox Church clergy and parishioners have recorded a video appeal in defence of the Kiev Lavra of the Caves 24 March 2023 year 18:25 The clergy and parishioners of several dioceses of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have recorded a video appeal to the Ukrainian authorities calling them not to take off the Kiev Lavra of the Caves. As the Union of Orthodox Journalists reports, the video appeal is published by the Public Union ‘Miryane’ (Laity). ‘We ask to prolong the leasing contract of the Lower Lavra of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church’, the appeal reads, ‘As far back as the Middle Ages, the Lavra was the breading ground of Orthodoxy and today it remains to be a center of Orthodox pilgrimage. Under the militant atheism, the Lavra fell into decay. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church has been restoring this holy monastery since 1988. Today, at the site where only ruins used to be, golden cupolas are sparkling magnificently. The clergy and laity of the Lavra work daily exerting great efforts to maintain order in the monastery. It is for this reason that we consider it unjust to take away from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church clergy the permission to serve in this holy place. Let the icon-lamp continue gleaming here so that the faithful could freely come here to celebrate the Sacred Mysteries of Christ and venerate the saints of the Caves’. According to the faithful, nowhere in the world, the relics of saints are ‘museum exhibits’. ‘Just imagine that the relics of Nicholas the Wonder-worker in Italy were made ‘an exhibit’, or the Church of the Lord’s Sepulchre in Jerusalem was closed for people and became a museum’. The parishioners of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church reminded the authorities that a hundred years ago the Orthodox Christians in Ukraine ‘already endured similar trials, and it did not bring any good to theomachists’. ‘Do not take the Lavra from us. You will take away the walls but not the faith’, the appeal stressed. Taking part in the recording of the video were the clergy and faithful from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Dioceses of Vladimir-Volynsky, Volyn, Dnepropetrovsk, Zhitomir, Kharkov, Kiev, Kirovograd, Odessa, Rovno, Sarny, Ternopol and Chernovitsy-Bukovina, as well as from Poland.      Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens and All Greece accused Europe and the Greek government of trying to alter Christian Greek society and the identity of Greek people. Ieronymos spoke on the occasion of a recent government proposal to make easier for students to be exempted from religious education classes. “The recent incident regarding religious education classes is the tip of the iceberg, I’m afraid. It seems that our European friends — taking advantage of our dire economic situation and in light of changing the economic relations between us — will seek by all means to alter Greek society starting with our schools,” Ieronymos said, addressing the Annual Conference of the Holy Synod. “The tragic thing is that our enemies are no longer far away. They are inside our walls. We can see it,” he said. The Archbishop referred to the reforms required by Greece’s creditors as part of the bailout agreement. He said that the Greek government has committed to a series of reforms and measures that are imposed by international creditors in order to “devalue Greek history and our traditions, tear down the institution of family, enforce perverted ideas, further degrade our language and show obvious contempt for centuries of our great civilization, our homeland, our faith.” The Archbishop called on the faithful Greek people, the hierarchy of the Greek Orthodox Church and the clergy to defend Greece’s traditions and faith. He also called on the state to collaborate with the Church “with sincerity and consistency and to set an example to our people for cooperation and unity.” GreekReporter.com 7 октября 2015 г. – All the Primates of the Orthodox Churches will soon have to express their attitude and make official statements about whether they recognize the new Church of Ukraine or not. In your opinion, how will the situation develop? – So far not a single Local Orthodox Church has recognized the newly-created schismatic structure in Ukraine. I would like to note that in the current situation the question is not whether to support Moscow or Constantinople. The question is: do we recognize the exceptional authoritative powers of one local Church over all the other Orthodox Churches? Do we recognize that it has the right to declare, with the stroke of a pen, schismatics canonical and the universally recognized Local Church inexistent? We all are faced with an attempt to impose a new ecclesiology on the Orthodox Church. I do not think that the Local Churches will agree to that. – By granting the Tomos of autocephaly to the newly-instituted church structure, Patriarch Bartholomew, in fact, ignored the existence in Ukraine of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the largest in number and recognized by all the Local Churches. In what way has its situation changed, when both the Phanar and the Ukrainian authorities are trying hard “not to notice” its existence? – From the canonical perspective the situation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has not changed at all. It was and is the only canonical Church of Ukraine. However, from a legal perspective its situation has worsened dramatically. The discriminatory laws adopted by the Parliament of Ukraine, which I mentioned earlier, in fact, doom to persecutions those who remain faithful to the canonical Orthodoxy. Despite all the efforts and pressure exerted by the Ukrainian authorities, clergymen and laypeople of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have shown exceptional faithfulness to their Church: except several clergymen and two bishops who joined the schism, the clergy supports His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry. Of course, persecutions of the faithful in Ukraine are still taking place, but the truth is not on the persecutors’ side: even now we see that the Ukrainian Orthodox Churches’ parishes win suits of ownership of church buildings, that processions with the cross bring together hundreds of thousands of believers. For instance, taking part in the procession with cross that marked the 1030th anniversary of the Baptism of Russia were 250 thousand believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and in 2017 taking part in the procession with the cross were 100 thousand people. It shows that the faithful people do not take notice of and ignore actions of the Ukrainian authorities which are obsessed with the idea of creating a nationalistic “church.”

Archive Пн His Holiness Patriarch Kirill meets with delegations of Local Orthodox Churches that arrived in Moscow for celebrations marking 10th anniversary of 2009 Local Council and Patriarchal enthronement 31 January 2019 year 21:56 On 31 January 2019, at the Patriarchal and Synodal residence in St. Daniel’s Monastery, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill met with delegations of the Local Orthodox Churches that had assembled in Moscow to take part in the celebrations marking the 10 th anniversary of the 2009 Local Council and Patriarchal enthronement.  Taking part in the meeting were: Among those present at the meeting were also Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations; Archbishop Roman of Yakutsk and Lensk; Archbishop Leonid of Vladikavkaz and Alania; Bishop Iriney of Orsk and Gai; Bishop Panteleimon of Orekhovo-Zuyevo; Bishop Ioann of Domodedovo; Archpriest Nikolai Balashov, DECR vice-chairman; and Archpriest Igor Yakimchuk, DECR secretary for inter-Orthodox relations. His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia delivered an address, saying in particular: “Every time we, representatives of the Local Orthodox Churches, meet, we can not only pray together, which is, of course, essential to such assemblies, but also discuss issues that worry us all.” Patriarch Kirill mentioned the developments in ecclesiastical life in Ukraine that, he emphasized, went beyond the canonical tradition of the Orthodox Church. The Patriarchate of Constantinople accepted into communion without repentance the Ukrainian schismatics, including former metropolitan Filaret, anathematized by the Russian Orthodox Church, and “hierarchs” of the schismatic groups who have no canonical ordination. The so-called “unification council” was held in Ukraine in order to legalize the election of the head of the new “unified church.” Taking part in that gathering were only two out of ninety canonical hierarchs of Ukraine. “That is why we do not recognize this “council” and regard its decisions as void, having no canonical force,” His Holiness also said, “However, this action caused many difficulties for the canonical Church. As the schism is supported by the governmental authorities, they are now fighting against the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Its episcopate and clergy are been brought under presser. At a parish level, church buildings of our Church are being seized.”
