Holy Orthodox Diocese of Botswana Celebrates Two Year Anniversary March 16, 2012 A Greek-British private school opened last month in Botswana, funded by the Orthodox Diocese of Botswana under the jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa. Greek, Greek-Cypriot, Ukrainian, Russian, Serbian and indigenous pupils are already visiting the school’s courses, which among others include the learning of the Greek and Russian language and the local dialect Setswana, as well as Orthodox catechism. Bishop Gennadios is in constant talks with the Ministry of Education of the country, aiming at upgrading the school to High School levels. The Embassies of France and Germany are also aiding the purpose of the private Orthodox school. Through these efforts, the Orthodox Diocese aims at gaining a decent presence and activity, since all missionary acts, no matter what their form might be, are strictly forbidden by law in the purely Christian populated country (Anglicans 60 percent, Roman Catholics 30 percent). “It is of high importance for our Orthodox Church to be able to serve the people and the society of Botswana in key sectors such as health and education” pointed out Bishop Gennadios in his interview to major circulation local news magazine “Discover Botswana”. The Bishop added that the Orthodox Church’s future lies in education. “The best schools in South Africa and other neighboring countries belong traditionally and essentially to the Orthodox Church. People support our work by sending their children to school to become educated and learn about the Christian values. What the Church needs to do is come out of its shell and approach the people and their needs without too much preaching and philosophy” highlighted the Orthodox Bishop. Bishop Gennadios gave interviews to well known “Animal Planet” and “National Geographic” channels and invited the journalists to participate at this year’s Orthodox Easter celebrations in order to experience the spiritual dimension of Christianity. During Easter time, the first doctors from Crete are expected to arrive in Botswana in order to implement new pilot medical programmes against AIDS. These programmes will be conducted in cooperation with the Medical Clinic of the Anglican Church “Hospice-Holy Cross”, where children suffering from AIDS are being treated. The Orthodox Diocese is celebrating this year its second anniversary from its establishment in October 2010. However, the Diocese does not have a Cathedral yet. Therefore, the Bishop will hold a new meeting with the authorities in charge to secure the right property where the first Orthodox Cathedral will be built. Greek Reporter 17 марта 2012 г. ... The Serbian Church calls reprinting of blasphemous cartoons “spiritual violence” Belgrade, January 13, 2015 The Serbian Orthodox Church has condemned the position of the country’s electronic and print media that reprinted the Islamic Prophet Mohammad cartoons from the Charlie Hebdo French daily in sympathy with the journalists, killed in the terrorist attack on January 7, reports RIA-Novosti . “Some of our electronic and print media have reprinted the cartoon images of the Islamic Prophet Mohammad (either unintentionally or due to sheer ignorance; but it still does not exempt them from responsibility) disregarding the fact that it was an unspeakable insult to the religious feelings and beliefs of our fellow citizens who confess Islam, and encouragement of intolerance and an openly hostile attitude towards Muslims, representatives of the Muslim community,” the statement on the Serbian Orthodox Church’s website reads. According to Bishop Irinej of Backa, ridiculing historic figures who shaped the unique religious identity of hundreds of millions of our contemporaries goes beyond the scope of freedom of speech, guaranteed by law, and is absolutely inadmissible. “We are calling upon our media workers to stop this spiritual violence immediately and to respect religious sentiments of all citizens. We express our solidarity with brothers Muslims and assure them that the faithful members of the Serbian Orthodox Church, whose religious feelings were insulted in the same or similar way by blasphemous images in some media, by no means approve of such an interpretation of freedom of speech and the secular nature of the society,” the appeal reads. 13 января 2015 г. O, great is the power of God and ineffable are His wonders, so that one who loves God and abides by His will cannot be destroyed even by the grave and the earth cannot imprison him. Moreover, even during his lifetime the sea itself was obedient to him, and after his death, death did not affect his God-bearing body. But, moreover, like an aromatic lily it grew on the fragrances of his virtues which blossomed from his youth, and, as the prophet said: ‘his body did not undergo decomposition’ (Acts 2:31). Protests greet donation of Austrian Catholic church to Orthodox/Православие.Ru Protests greet donation of Austrian Catholic church to Orthodox Vienna, 29 November 2010 The head of the Roman Catholic Church in Austria has denied being " anti-Polish " after members of Polish congregations in Vienna protested against his decision to offer one of the city " s Catholic churches to Serbian Orthodox Christians - writes Jonathan Luxmoore. " In recent weeks, many stormy events have taken place around a church in the Neulerchenfeld district, " said Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the chairperson of the Austrian Catholic Bishops " Conference. " Untruths and simplifications have been spread, filling me with great sadness, " said the cardinal. " It has gone so far that I have been accused of deliberately acting against Polish Catholics, and this information has even circulated in southern Poland. I must assure you the truth is quite different. " Schönborn was reacting to protests by local Polish Catholics against news that the city " s Our Lady of Sorrows church would be handed over in June 2011 to members of the 160 000-strong Serbian Orthodox community. More than 130 Catholic priests from Poland are currently ministering in the Vienna archdiocese, where Polish Catholicism is one of 36 foreign-language communities recognised by the Catholic Church. The cardinal had said in a 19 November 2010 open letter he had promised to donate the church to the Orthodox after determining it could no longer be maintained by its declining congregation, and would otherwise have had to be closed and sold. The move had faced protests by local Catholics, including a large group of Poles and their priest, the Rev Tadeusz Cichon, who rejected Cardinal Schönborn " s explanation and accused him of an " act of unfriendliness towards Poles " . In his letter, the cardinal noted that the number of Christians of other denominations had been growing rapidly. " We must help them in Christian solidarity, among other things by transferring places of worship to them, " said Schönborn.

Archive Patriarch Kirill congratulates the Primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church on his 90th birthday 28 August 2020 year 10:00 The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church congratulates His Holiness Irinej, Patriarch of Serbia, on his 90 th  birthday. His Holiness Irinej, Archbishop of Pec, Metropolitan of Belgrade and Karlovci, Patriarch of Serbia Your Holiness, Beloved Brother and Concelebrant at God’s altar, Kindly accept my cordial congratulations on your 90th birthday. Honoring Your Holiness on this significant day, I repeat the inspiring scriptural words that befit the occasion: “Gray hair is a crown of glory, if it is attained in the way of righteousness” (Proverbs 16:31). Being one of the oldest First Hierarchs, you have gained special authority among the Primates of the Local Orthodox Churches. With your inherent Primatial wisdom and feeling of responsibility you serve to the unity of Orthodoxy and vigilantly guard the two millennia-old canonical order in the Church of Christ which is “the pillar and foundation of the truth” (1 Tim. 3:15). The zealous and sacrificial ministry of Your Holiness on the old and glorious Patriarchal See of Pec, filled with paternal concern for the spiritual revival of the co-religious Serbian people so dear to our heart, is abundant, as St. Paul said, by many thanksgivings unto God (2 Cor. 9:12). By the Pantocrator’s providence, you are destined to be at the helm of the Church of St. Sava at a very difficult time marked with trials new for her, especially in Kosovo and Montenegro. In sorrows and joys you and your God-loving flock are always accompanied by the prayerful support of the hierarchy, clergy, monastics and the entire Russian Orthodox Church. Your Holiness, on this glorious day of your celebration, from my heart I would like to wish you abundant physical strength for many years, peace and inexhaustible help from above in your further Patriarchal ministry performed so diligently for the glory of the Consubstantial and Undivided Trinity. With brotherly love in Jesus Christ, +KIRILL PATRIARCH OF MOSCOW AND ALL RUSSIA Календарь ← 7 December 2023 year
