Egypt: Church lawyer says controversial priest " s wife to appear on TV soon/Православие.Ru Egypt: Church lawyer says controversial priest " s wife to appear on TV soon By Marwa Al-A’sar/Daily News Egypt Cairo, Egypt, May 1, 2011 A priest’s wife who is allegedly being held against her will by the Coptic Church for converting to Islam, will soon appear on TV to refute these allegations, Church lawyer Ramsis El-Naggar told Daily News Egypt on Sunday. “Kamilia Shehata will appear on a Coptic TV channel within a few days at her own prerogative,” El-Naggar said, adding that the Church has no authority over any citizen to make them appear publicly or remain silent. On Saturday, the Prosecutor General had summoned Shehata to investigate rumors that have driven thousands of Muslims belonging to various Salafi groups, to protest outside the Coptic Church " s Cairo headquarters to demand her release, claiming that she was a Muslim convert who was illegally detained. The whereabouts of Shehata have been the subject of speculation and controversy since July 2010, when Shehata, the wife of Tadros Samaan, the Bishop of Saint Mark’s Church in Mowas Cathedral in Minya, had disappeared after a visit to her father in Cairo. A week later the police said in newspaper statements that she was found and handed over to the church, but she has not appeared in public since. Her husband said at the time that she had left following a domestic dispute. The church authorities refused to be served with the prosecutor’s summons delivered by a bailiff. Lawyer Salah Sadek explained that the prosecution addressed the Church in the first place based on unconfirmed reports that Shehata was held there. “The law does not dictate a specific venue from which to summon a citizen. So if it is known that she lived in the Church, then that would be considered her location,” Sadek told DNE. If Shehata does not appear before the prosecution, Sadek explained, the prosecution should order an investigation into her whereabouts.

Speaking at the Bishops " Council in Moscow, he recalled that on November 12, 2015, the Supreme Rada approved of the draft on " Introducing Changes in the Codex of Ukrainian Laws on Labor (referring to harmonizing Ukrainian law in correspondence with European law in view of preventing and opposing discrimination), the Russian Church reports on its website. " This law introduces into the Ukrainian legislative field the new terms " sexual orientation, " and " gender identity. " Such novelties can become the first step towards promoting the homosexual lifestyle in Ukraine and attempts to legalize homosexual marriages, " the metropolitan said. He said that the Ukrainian Church, together with other religious organizations, offered alternative formulations to the Rada in order to prevent discrimination without introducing " terms alien to Christian morals " into the legislative field. " Unfortunately, our position has not been heard. Thus, the Bishops " Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church again on January 29, 2016 urged the Ukrainian President to back up traditional moral values and protect people from promoting sinful lifestyles in society, " Metropolitan Onufry said.

A Delegation of West Point Cadets Visits Holy Virgin Protection Church November 2, 2011 On Saturday, October 22, 2011, a delegation of West Point cadets visited Holy Virgin Protection Church in Nyack, NY. The visit was arranged by Dr Olga Vladimirovna Dobrunoff, Russian professor at the United States Military Academy, and the parish rector, Protopriest George Larin. Accompanying the professor were Lieutenant Colonel Michael Nerstheimer, Cadet Jonathan Stamp, Cadet Ivan Ivaschenko, and Cadet Ranson Sammons. The cadets were welcomed by the rector, parish school supervisor Protodeacon Sergei Arlievsky, Mr Alexander Sergeevich Alimov, Senior Consultant to the Russian Federation at the UN, Colonel and Mrs Richard Clark, Mr Serge Lopoukhine and several parish council members. The visitors, members of the Russian Club at the Military Academy, expressed an interest in visiting the parish in order to gain a better understanding of the Russian culture within the parish community. Fr Sergei gave a tour of the parish school and familiarized the guests with its history. He pointed out that the school history and activities have been recognized by Russian Federation education authorities, and that school representatives have been invited to participate in several academic conferences in Russia. Some of the school’s graduates, thanks to their knowledge of the Russian language, history, and culture, have been able to achieve prestigious posts in the academic, business, and political worlds. Some parish school alumni have gone on to become presidents of Russian banks, government officials, and interpreters to US presidents. The visitors were then given a tour of the parish church. Two of the cadets are of the Orthodox faith and noted that the church visit was " close to home. " The visitors familiarized themselves with the services, symbolism, iconography, and architecture of the Russian Orthodox Church. After a visit to the parish bookstore, all those present enjoyed a bountiful Russian dinner, prepared by the sisterhood. During the meal, the cadets had an opportunity to speak to the rector and parishioners about the rich history of Russian America. Many of the parishioners related their life stories and explained how they came to America and settled in Nyack’s Russian community. On Friday evening, while the participants enjoyed a night out in Clearwater, the LMC held their annual meeting and discussed an agenda that included preparations for next year’s conference. During this year’s conference, many participants expressed their interest in the historical evolution and status of the ROCM conferences and everything this project has accomplished since its founding in Glen Cove in 1987. Over the years, the ROCM conference has been enormously successful in awakening the interest and commitment of a whole new generation of Orthodox Church musicians. As a result, the conference can no longer be seen as a solitary undertaking, as multiple other initiatives and ad hoc regional meetings continue to spring up every year in different corners of the United States, Canada, and around the world. The LMC is grateful for the constructive feedback and encouragement it received and is looking forward to auspicious program planning for the coming year. On Saturday night, we all traveled to St. Andrew’s church for the Vigil service. The choir of roughly fifty singers fit comfortably in the choir loft of the new church, which featured magnificent acoustic surroundings. All church services were officiated by Vladyka Theodosy, who himself is very fond of church singing, and who during his time at the Kiev Caves Lavra monastery, was part of their choir. (It is well known that, on occasion, Vladyka comes up to the choir loft of the San Francisco Cathedral to sing Kievan Lavra chant along with the Holy Virgin Cathedral choir.) Archpriest Igor, Protodeacon Serge Arlievsky, and Deacon Igor Tarasov concelebrated with Vladyka Theodosy. After the Vigil, a catered dinner was served, generously donated by a benefactor from the parish. On Sunday morning, a festive greeting and vesting of the bishop took place. The Divine Liturgy was peacefully prayerful. All the work that went into rehearsing and conducting technique during the conference was evident in the beautiful singing witnessed by those who attended the Divine services. At the end of Divine Liturgy, the thunderous chant of “Many Years,” along with the words of gratitude from Vladyka and Father Igor, warmed the hearts of those present. After the service, the parish hosted a farewell banquet, during which the LMC thanked all the local organizers, presenting gifts to those who made significant contributions: Vladyka Theodosy, Father Igor and Matushka Shitikov, Elder sister Rose Agayev, Music Director Vladislav Markov and Olga Markov, an anonymous donor, Vitaly Macas, Louise Kudrov, Katherine and Alexei Lukianov, Peter Jermihov, and Eugenia Temidis. We wish our Liturgical Music Commission strength, health, patience, and vitality of spirit for their further efforts in the field of church music. Next year, God willing, we will all meet at the 25th Jubilee ROCM Conference, which will be held at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Montreal, Canada. May it be so! 6 ноября 2015 г. Смотри также

Sudan bans construction of new churches Khartoum, July 13, 2014 Sudan President Omar Al-Bashir. PHOTO FILE Sudan has prohibited the construction of any new church in the country which has been under an Islamic regime since 1989. The Sudanese Minister of Guidance and Religious Endowments Shalil Abdullah announced that the government will henceforth not issue permits for the building of churches in the country. Minister Shalil Abdullah told the press on Saturday that the existing churches are enough for the Christians population remaining in Sudan after the secession of South Sudan in 2011. He pointed out that South Sudan is now an independent country with a majority of its people being Christians, and that the number of Christians still in Sudan is small. The ban elicited immediate criticism from Sudanese Christian leaders. Secretary-General of Sudan Council of Churches Reverend Kori El Ramli told radio Tamazuj that the statement made by the minister contradicts the country’s constitution. CHRISTIAN MINORITY “Yes, we are a minority, but we have freedom of worship and belief just like the rest of the Sudanese as long as we are Sudanese nationals like them,” he explained. The bishop also criticized the recent demolition of a church near a suburb located in Khartoum North by local authorities. On July 1, authorities demolished the Sudanese Christ Church at El Izba residential area in Khartoum North. Kuwa Shamal Kuku, the bishop of the demolished church, expressed his discontent saying the demolition was carried out under the pretext of protecting the land. Sudan sentenced to death a Christian woman last May after she refused to renounce her faith. She was freed by the Sudanese appeal court, but she is still staying in the American embassy in Khartoum after being prevented from leaving the country last month. The verdict of the Sudanese court sparked international criticism on religious freedom in the country. 14 июля 2014 г. Смотри также Комментарии Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

ROCOR Western diocese announces celebrations of the 700th anniversary of the birth of St Sergius of Radonezh and the 50th anniversary of the glorification of St John of Kronstadt by the Russian Church Abroad The Western American Diocese of the Russian Church Abroad has announced celebrations of the 700th anniversary of the birth of St Sergius of Radonezh and the 50th anniversary of the glorification of St John of Kronstadt by the Russian Church Abroad, reports the ROCOR website . Church of St. Seraphim of Sarov, Monterey, California.      His Eminence Archbishop Kyrill has announced an All-Diocesan celebration-pilgrimage to Saint Seraphim of Sarov Church in Monterey, California, on Saturday the 4th of October, 2014. “This year, 2014, the Local Russian Church celebrates the 700th Anniversary of the birth of the venerable God-bearer Sergius of Radonezh, and the Church Abroad—the 50th Anniversary of the glorification of Holy Righteous John of Krondstadt. This is a jubilee of two intercessors who embody within themselves on the one hand—Russian Orthodox Monasticism; and on the other—sacrificial parish pastorship. For they alone in the history of the Russian Church received the extraordinary titles: Venerable Sergius of Radonezh, ‘Abbot of the Russian Land,’ and the Righteous St John of Krondtstadt, ‘Pastor of All-Russia!’ I congratulate you dear co-pastors, brothers, sisters and children with the jubilee of the Venerable Sergius and Holy Righteous John. In part, these jubilees allow us to recollect the lives and teachings of the pleasers of God, turn to them with intense prayer, understand their struggles in light of our lives in the 21st century and strengthen our flock’s bond of love and faith to them,” His Eminence Archbishop Kyrill stated in a decree. Those who participate in the pilgrimage will have the opportunity to venerate a particle of the honorable relics of St. Sergius Radonezh bequeathed to the diocese this past summer by His Holiness Patriarch Kyril, and a belt worn by Holy Righteous John of Krondstadt. The schedule of celebrations is posted on the official website of the diocese . 11 сентября 2014 г. Смотри также Комментарии Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

I am a mix of Orthodoxy and Protestantism. You correctly understand my perspective, but may have wondered what I am doing on an Orthodox site. As a Protestant, I am not protesting anything of the Orthodox faith except to challenge what seems weak to me from a Biblical perspective. When I talk about belief in Jesus Christ as the basis of salvation, I also believe that faith without works is an expression of no belief at all. So the two MUST go together. And any true Evangelical Protestant would agree with that. I take it from your input and feedback that you are both truly wonderful people and I would love to meet you in person. But at least we have been able to share with each other in this forum in love and respect. The single best article that I think would be a fitting " resolution " to our disagreements is found here: http://www.pravmir.com/what-is-not-church/. I cannot judge you and you cannot judge me. In the end, Christ will judge us all. Love in Christ to you both.
