Amen. Sermon on the Feast of the Three Hierarchs Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) Sermon on the Feast of the Three Hierarchs Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) There is much in common among the three hierarchs and great ecumenical teachers whom we commemorate today: Saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom. All three lived in a time when the Christian Church, after almost three centuries of persecution, received freedom and was flourishing throughout the Byzantine ‘oikoumene’. All the three were involved in contesting contemporary heresies. All the three combined serving the Church in episcopal rank with literary activity, and it is precisely their literary legacy which secured for them the paramount place that they occupy in Christian Tradition. All the three were victims of ecclesiastical intrigues. Their posthumous glory, however, exceeded any expectations their contemporaries might have had, and their significance for the entire Christian Church in East and West cannot be overestimated. John Anthony McGuckin Newly Revealed Saints JOHN A. MCGUCKIN The title of “Newly revealed” (Neophaneis) refers to those saints of the Orthodox Church whose relics have been discovered in relatively recent times, often after years of being lost or forgotten, and whose cult has accordingly revived. From the earliest times the concept of the “revelation of a saint” following a significant and wondrous event (thauma) or a dream in which the saint appears to an individual have been a commonly known part of the cult of saints in the Eastern Church. So it was that in the 5th century St. Cyril of Alexandria discovered the relics of Sts. Cyrus and John, Empress Eudoxia discovered the relics of St. Stephen the Protomartyr in Jerusalem, and the priest Nicholas Calligraphos discovered the relics of Sts. Andronikos and Junia at Constantinople. The cult of St. Phanourios of Rhodes developed in 1500 after an icon was discovered in a hidden chapel; and in 1798 a child’s visions led to the discovery ofthe relics ofthe Megara martyrs, whose cult became especially popular after the Greek War of Independence. The relics of St. Patapios and companions were discovered in a cave church at Geraneia in 1904 and became a focus of much pilgrimage. The New Martyr Ephraim (martyred in the 15th century) was found after a series of visions by a Greek nun in 1950 at Nea Makri. Unknown saints’ relics have also been discovered in the monasteries, such as St. Eudokimos found at Vatopedi in 1841, St. Basil of Akarnania found in 1923, and the relics found after a monk’s grave started one day to emit a fountain of water at Neamt in Romania, after the fall of the communist regime there (St. Paisy Velichovsky’s monastery). Furthermore, in a massive work called Periphyseon (‘About nature’) Eriugena presented a unified view of the whole of reality in a profoundly mystical vein: God, the creation of the world and man, and the return to God. Everything in the universe is said to participate in a double movement: a procession or going out from God and a return to God. A continuous movement is thus taking place between the Uncreated (God) and the created (the angels, man and the world). From the early 13th century onwards the Middle Ages suppressed Eriugena, with his work being condemned and placed on the Index of banned books. Only during the 20th century has his greatness begun to be recognized, a process in which contemporary Irish scholars such as John O’Meara, Mary Brennan, Dermot Moran and Deirdre Carabine have played no small part. Today Eriugena is widely regarded as the greatest Western philosopher of the early Middle Ages, the most important link between East and West in medieval Christianity. Epilogue During the final years of the second Christian millennium and the first years of the third, the fullness of the Orthodox Christian faith was brought to Ireland with the establishment of Greek, Russian, Romanian and Georgian Orthodox churches in Dublin. In addition, an Antiochian church was founded in Belfast, amidst an Ulster population torn apart by decades of sectarian conflict. Thus has the vibrant spirituality of Irish Christianity developed via its flowering in monasticism and missionary activity, its suffering at the hands of the Viking invasions, its oppression from the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion onwards, and ultimately its fulfilment in the Orthodox Christian Faith. His book " De Synodis " was dedicated to the Western bishops, including those of the " provinces of Britain " . However, it is safe to assume that the latter included the Irish Christians at the time, as the difference between P and Q Celtic was still small and the Irish Sea formed no barrier between the British and the Irish. It would therefore be natural to have bishops presiding on both sides, just as a century later there were kings ruling on both sides, like the Dalriada in the north and the Eoghanacht of Munster ruling in parts of Wales. The king of Munster around 360, Conal, was already a Christian, thus predating the arrival of Saints Palladius and Patrick by several decades. My apology for the typing error.(With acknowledgement to my Irish Orthodox friend Conor MacCarthy). Thank you Cyril, the article has meanwhile been published in booklet form by the author, in English and Russian. My email is wdebeer@yahoo.com.

Venerable Anthony of Iezerul-Vilcea Skete Commemorated on November 23 Saint Anthony the Hesychast was born in the sub-Carpathian Mountains of Vilcea county in Romania, and he loved Christ from his early childhood. He knew many ascetics who lived as hesychasts, and they had a profound effect upon his life. He received the monastic tonsure at the Iezerul Skete, where he lived for several years as a young man. In 1690, after he had gained experience in the ascetical life, the igumen blessed him to live as a solitary on Mt Iezerul. There he lived in a small cave, glorifying God and struggling against demons. Only real hesychasts know what great temptations and trials face those who wish to live as solitaries. Saint Anthony labored for three years digging a chapel out of the cliffside with his own hands. He would work during the day, and keep vigil by night. When the chapel was finished, it was consecrated by Bishop Hilarion of Rimnicu Vilcea. Saint Anthony prayed there unceasingly, reading the daily services and making hundreds of prostrations. A hieromonk from the Skete would come from time to time to celebrate the Divine Liturgy on Feast Days and during the fasts. Saint Anthony’s holy life became known throughout the region, and many of the clergy and laity flocked to him for spiritual advice or consolation in sorrows. He received them with love, gave them the help they needed, and sent them home in peace. Through his influence, a genuine spiritual revival took place in sub-Carpathian Oltenia. Saint Anthony fell asleep in the Lord in 1714 after twenty-five years of spiritual struggles. His disciples mourned him, and buried him beside his small chapel. The faithful still go there to light candles and to pray, seeking his blessing and assistance. Saint Anthony the Hesychast was glorified by the Orthodox Church of Romania in 1992. Troparion — Tone 8 With the streams of your tears you cultivated the barrenness of the desert;/and by your deep sighs, you bore fruit a hundredfold in your labors./You became a luminary, shining upon the world with miracles./O our righteous Father Anthony, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved! US Assembly of Bishops’ Executive Committee meets with Ecumenical Patriarch Istanbul, Turkey, June 20, 2015      On Tuesday, June 16, 2015, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew warmly received the Executive Committee of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America at the Phanar in Constantinople. During the meeting, which took place in a spirit of open exchange in the personal office of the Ecumenical Patriarch, the hierarchs reviewed with His All-Holiness the work of the Assembly of Bishops, especially as it relates to the overall work of its committees. Particular attention was given to the work of the Committees for Pastoral Practice and Canonical Regional Planning. The hierarchs also discussed a number of challenges and opportunities in the formulation of a proposed plan for the restructuring of the Orthodox Church in the United States. Joining the Ecumenical Patriarch, Elder Metropolitan John of Pergamon discussed the mission of the Assemblies of Bishops as originally envisioned at their inception in Chambésy in 2009. Both the Ecumenical Patriarch and Metropolitan John commended the efforts of the US hierarchs, and acknowledged their work as a model for inter-Orthodox cooperation. Present at the meeting with the Ecumenical Patriarch and Elder Metropolitan John of Pergamon were the following members of the Executive Committee: Archbishop Demetrios (Ecumenical Patriarchate, Assembly Chairman), Bishop John (Moscow Patriarchate, Second-Vice Chairman), Metropolitan Antony (Treasurer), Bishop Longin (Patriarchate of Serbia), Archbishop Nicolae (Patriarchate of Romania), Metropolitan Joseph (Patriarchate of Bulgaria), Bishop Saba (Patriarchate of Georgia). Also present were Bishop Maxim (Coordinator for Committees) and Metropolitan Tikhon (Orthodox Church in America). 15,000 believers present at Divine Liturgy on the Feast of Saint Paraskeva of Iai      Other several thousands of believers stood in a three-kilometre line to get to bow down before the relics of Saint Paraskeva and Saint Neophyte the Recluse from Cyprus, Doxologia marketing officer, Ioana Stoian, reports. Photo: http://basilica.ro/en      His Eminence Athanasios, Metropolitan of Limassol (Orthodox Church of Cyprus) presided over the Divine Liturgy. Almost thirty hierarchs from home and abroad concelebrated: Following the gospel reading, His Eminence Athanasios, Metropolitan of Limassol, delivered a homily. Saint Paraskeva and Saint Neophyte are a proof that when man loves Christ, he lacks nothing else. On the contrary, when Christ is absent from the heart, man becomes unhappy, regardless of his belongings. Observing and studying the lives of the saints, we can judge our own lives. We receive a model and example of living, we are quickened by the Spirit, and we can follow them and become lovers of God. Remembering the Saints means following them and imitating them, Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol said. At the end of the Divine Liturgy, the Archbishop of Târgovite read out the blessing message conveyed by His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, to the pilgrims present in Iai. Next, Metropolitan Teofan awarded several families with many children from Romania and the Republic of Moldova the Moldavian Cross . Basilica News Agency 20 октября 2016 г. I would recommend the book " " The mountain of silence " " where the author Kyriakos Markides has a conversation with Mitr. Athanasios (using the pen name Fr Maximos) Note, I do not recommend the author Markides himself, as I find his " " theology " " weird, but what Mitr. Athanasios has to say in the conversation is well worth reading. Many years to Mitr. Athanasios! Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку

Fr. Alexander: There are many monasteries that simply do not accept prayer list with names like that… Fr. Dimitry: That is absurdity, ignorance, and especially offensive when Orthodoxy is given as the reason. What does this have to do with Orthodoxy? Besides Russian Orthdoxy there is also Greek, Serbian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Georgian, and American Orthodoxy—in America there are entirely American names, and who can object to that, or has objected to it? Only in a few of our monasteries where darkness enlightens. True, His Holiness the Patriarch is concerned about this—even people in monasteries should be given an elementary education so that they might at least come out of this absurdity, because it is a total absurdity that doesn’t exist in any teaching. If you take the Apostle Peter for example, when the Lord named him “Petros”—that name didn’t exist in any calendar of saints, and in fact there was no such calendar. In the same way, Saul became Paul. Oh, how hard it is when ignorance flourishes, and people are hurt by it. Editor’s Note: While in Russia each Orthodox Christian has a patron saint, in Serbia every family has its own heavenly protector, on whose feast day the family celebrates its “slava”. Arab Orthodox Christians often have both an Arabic name and a Christian name. This is often done to protect children from unwanted attention in Muslim majority schools. Fr. As name " Milosh " was mentioned above, let " s not neglect that Milosh Obilich was the Serbian hero of the Battle of Kosovo (1389) who is numbered among the martyred Saints of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Moreover, in 2004, the Serbian Church included in the calendar of saints several hundred thousand Serb martyrs, civilians murdered during the WWII on the account of their nationality and Orthodox faith, by Croatian Nazis (so called Ustashe). It is almost certain (mathematically) that each and every Serbian name is included among them...

The St John Chrysostom Order awarded to a great philanthropist, Fr Nicolae Tnase Source: Basilica News Agency November 24, 2015      Rev. Fr. Nicolae Tnase, parish priest of Valea Plopului (the Valley of the Plopar), Prahova County, was awarded by His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania, the St. John Chrysostom Order, on Tuesday, November 24, 2015. Fr Nicolae also received the rank of oikonomos-stavrophore. His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel congratulated Fr Nicolae for all his work: We congratulate Fr Nicolae Tnase for his special philanthropic activity at the Valea Plopului parish, and also for his extended missionary ministry both here and abroad, because he is often invited to bear witness for the benefit of the Church and society to the Orthodox faith and teachings, especially on family, and on children as a gift from God. May the good God, through the intercessions of St. John Chrysostom, grant him a similar spiritual zeal and love for the salvation of people, especially for the support of the suffering and of those in need. This is a moment of appreciation, joy and encouragement. When an award is granted, we show gratitude, but also a hope for continuation. Gratitude is shown for the work already carried out, and hope for the continuation of the work for the benefit of the Church and the glory of the Most Holy Trinity. “”This day is special and surprising at the same time. This moment, as His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel has said, hihglights a past stage and the beginning of a new one in which we hope to continue the philanthropic ministry of the Church for the benefit of the Christians in the parish, and not simpy preaching to the people what today is necessary”, Fr Nicolae Tnase said. Fr Nicolae Tnase is a parish priest of Valea Plopului village in Prahova County, Romania. By his efforts, twenty-nine churches were built in the village. Beginning in 1990, Fr Nicolae started his ministry by preaching against abortion. In 1994, Fr Nicolae Tnase founded the Pro Vita (For Life) Association for the support of born and unborn children.
