On 15 April 2015, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia met with Panos Kommenos, Greece’s Minister of National Defence and leader of ‘The Independent Greeks’ political party. They were joined in the meeting, which took place at the Patriarchal and Synodal residence in St. Daniel’s Stavropegic Monastery, by archpriest Nikolai Balashov, vice-chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations (DECR), and deacon Anatoly Churiakov, a staff member of the DECR secretariat for inter-Orthodox Relations. Welcoming the guest, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill expressed his joy over meeting with him during Bright Week and mentioned his recent meeting with the Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras. The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church noted the importance of the development of relations between Russia and Greece and underscored that these relations were influenced by the belonging of the majority of the population to Orthodoxy. He said: ‘The Orthodox factor plays a special role in the relations between Greece and Russia. Governments, parties and even political regimes in our countries change, but relations between people have always been good because they are maintained on the basis of Orthodoxy.’ Patriarch Kirill said that Panos Kommenos was a founding member of the Inter-Parliamentary Committee on matters regarding Hellenism and Orthodoxy and told the guest about the State Duma interfactional deputies group for protection of Christian values. His Holiness also mentioned the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy in which deputies from Greece, Russia and other countries work. His Holiness noted minister Kommenos’ stand on the support (including the material one) of the important educational and social work done by the priests of the Orthodox Church of Greece, especially in rural areas, where the Church serves as a real centre of life in community. Patriarch Kirill spoke of the necessity of pan-Orthodox and pan-Christian solidarity. ‘I believe that the main concern of all Christians today should be the situation of the Christian populations in the Middle East and North Africa,’ he said.

Metropolitan Hilarion takes part in the opening of choral part of the 13th Moscow Easter Festival Source: DECR The choral programme of the 13th Moscow Easter Festival began at the Hall of Church Council of the Church of Christ the Saviour on April 21, 2014. Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, addressed the organizers, participants and guests. He greeted them on behalf of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and said that the audience has gathered to listen to church music and share spiritual and musical culture which has made the life of the Holy Orthodox Church richer over centuries. He continued to say: ‘For two thousand years and in different parts of the world the Christian Church has glorified the Risen Christ at Divine services, through liturgical art that includes church singing. We do not celebrate without singing. Even in a small village church someone, even two or three old women who lost voice, sing at the Liturgy, Matins and Vespers. ‘The Orthodox praise God not only by saying prayers, but also by singing them. The word “Orthodoxy” originally meant the true teaching about God and was translated into Slavonic as correct glorification of God. During Easter-tide our hearts are filled with praise to the Lord, and our prayers to God, who was risen for the sake of opening our way to salvation, has taken shape in the sounds of church music. ‘During the festival the listeners will hear various pieces of church music, both Russian and foreign which have glorified the Risen Saviour over centuries. I wish that the music of Orthodox divine services, in which we all participate these days as I hope, will arose kind feelings in our hearts and we will bring Easter joy to our near and dear and feel this joy throughput the next year and through all our life. Christ is risen!’ Performing at the concert were the Moscow Synodal Choir conducted by Alexei Puzakov, Athos Fessalonikis Imnodi choir from Greece conducted by Ioannis Liakos, and Choir of the Mariinsky Theatre of St. Petersburg conducted by Pavel Petrenko. They sang Easter liturgical hymns by Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev), Dmitry Bortnyansky, Sergei Rachmaninov, Pavel Chesnokov, Georgy Sviridov, Petr Tchaikovsky, Nikolai Golovanov, and Sergei Degtyarev.

Image: synod.com The trustees of the Russian Geographical Society (RGO) are planning to restore the Orthodox Holy Trinity Chapel on the territory of the Fort Ross national historical park in Jenner, California, Nikolai Tokarev, the head of oil company Transneft stated at a meeting of the RGO Board of Trustees on April 24, reports TASS. Mr. Tokarev said that Russian and American politicians, businessmen, and public figures meet annually at Fort Ross. “Today we can definitely say that the Fort Ross dialogue has turned into a positive point of crystallization in the relations between the US and Russia, which is very important today,” he explained, adding that when they received the proposal to support the reconstruction of the historic church, they didn’t have to spend much time thinking about it. According to him, the upcoming work will contribute “not only to the reconstruction of the historical appearance of Fort Ross, but will also be the realization of the mission of dialogue, the center of gravity for all who care about Russian-American relations. Another RGO Trustee, Frederick Doug Arfst Paulsen, also noted that “the Russian development of North America is an important part of history that is often forgotten.” Fort Ross is the only surviving Russian wooden stronghold in America, he noted, “but the United States does not allocate sufficient funds for its maintenance, and the structure needs restoration.” He also highlighted the joint Russian-American work on the Fort as especially important in today’s political climate. Fort Ross is a former Russian settlement and stronghold on the California coast, about 50 miles north of San Francisco. It was founded in 1812 by a Russian-American company to provide food for Russian possessions in Alaska and to expand the resource base of Russia in America. The Holy Trinity chapel was used by Russians and Aleuts who were members of the colony. The fort was sold to American landowners in 1842. Several American saints—St Innocent of Alaska, St Sebastian Dabovich, and St Tikhon of Moscow—had visited and stayed at Fort Ross. Today, the fort is a place of pilgrimage several times throughout the year, on Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and St Vladimir’s Day.
