English Edition [Orthodoxy Today] Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev, Metropolitan of Volokolamsk and head of the Russian Orthodox Church " s Department of External Relations, says the Argentine pontiff " s decision to honor Saint Francis of Assisi puts " service to the poor” at the top of the new pope " s agenda. [Saints. Asceties of Piety. Church Holy Days ] St. Gregory of Nyssa I believe that persons who have undergone many harsh experiences can give us encouragement because the sufferings which they and others have endured are a source of special joy. A shepherd rejoices when he sees his abundant flock gathered together; although his pen is large, he expands it to accommodate a large number of sheep. Similarly, Peter saw a throng gathered about the Lord and exclaimed, Master, the crowd surrounds you and presses upon you (Lk. 8.45). [News] Residents of the town of Velikiy Novgorod in Russia will erect a chapel at the mouth of the Indigirka river on the coast of the Arctic ocean where descendants of ancient residents of Novgorod live. [News] The Novgorod administration in Russia will be deciding the issue of handing over two ancient convents in the town of Velikiy Novgorod to the Russian Orthodox Church. [News] On 19 March, 2013 bells for the Church of St Mary Magdalene, Equal-to-the-Apostles, which is now under construction, were blessed in Madrid. Thirteen bells with total weight of 3600 kilograms were cast at the " Liteks " factory in Moscow. [Theology] Vincent Martini Again, the focus of these cults and their “rituals” was to ensure—or rather, to attempt to ensure—that their crops would be fruitful at the time of harvest. The movement of these “gods” and “goddesses” from life to death was symbolic of, and intimately connected with, the life and death of their crops (and the resulting offspring). This, of course, begs the question: What does this have to do with the resurrection of Jesus Christ as the only-begotten Son of God the Father? Српска bepзuja

Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D. Peterson Скачать epub pdf APOSTLE APOSTLE. 1) From Greek meaning a “messenger” or “one sent,” it is most probably Biblically related to the Hebrew shaliach, which is used of Moses, Elijah, Elisha, and Ezekiel, who function as God’s ambassadors. Thus, Jesus identified himself as being “sent” by the Father and his followers became apostles when they were “sent out” by him to proclaim the Gospel and continue his ministry, previous to which they were only disciples. Noted apostles include the Twelve, Matthias who replaced Judas, and Paul and Barnabas as apostles to the Gentiles. Still, the Orthodox Church continues the list to include the Seventy ( Lk 10 ), if not the 500 ( 1Cor 15 ), then all who subsequently function as apostles to other peoples, e.g., Mary Magdalene, Nina of Georgia, Constantine-Cyril and Methodius, Innocent Veniaminov (qq.v.), et al. The significant difference between this reckoning and the Western definition is that many women are included in the Eastern list, possessing the same “authority” as apostle as their male counterparts. Also, the list of apostles is clearly distinguishable from the list of bishops, since the ministries function differently. Apostleship is clearly a ministry open to women in the Eastern Church. Further, the honorific “equal-to-the-apostles” is applied to temporal rulers responsible for establishing Christianity in their domains. Thus, the pairs Constantine and Helen, and Vladimir and Olga, are accorded the titles equal-to-the-apostles for making Christianity the state religion of the Roman-Byzantine and Rus’-Russian Empires, respectively. It is well known in the Orthodox ethos that the Christian commitment of the older matriarch in each of these two pairs preceded that of the male; and the conversions of two of the largest empires was initiated by and is dependent upon these women. 2) The name of the epistle reading during the Divine Liturgy, always taken from Acts or one of the epistles; similarly, it is the name of the liturgical book (q.v.) containing Acts and all the epistles. Archive The Russian Orthodox Church helps the Patriarchate of Jerusalem to build a church 2 March 2021 year 11:52 On February 28, 2021, with a blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem, Archimandrite Alexander (Yelisov) accompanied by his deputy Hieromonk Dometian (Markarian), made a visit to Israel’s Northern District. During his trip Father Alexander visited the city of Sakhnin where, with a blessing of His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem, a church is being built for the local Christian population historically confessing Orthodoxy. The northern cities and settlements in Israel are special in that the Christian population there is indigenous, as they have preserved faithfulness to their religious beliefs for many centuries in spite of multiple political changes. This is why the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Jerusalem shows special concern for the pastoral care of this region. The church under construction is planned by Patriarch Theophilos to become a spiritual pillar for all the local Orthodox Christians so that they could feel the support of the Mother Church in their historical home. Sharing the concern of the Church of Jerusalem, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill has made his own contribution to the church under construction and gifted it a carved communion table for the main altar dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God, as well as two communion tables for the church’s side-altars. The communion tables were produced by the workshops of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus. Archimandrite Alexander met with the warden of the church under construction, Dr M. Gantus and representatives of the parish community who were inspired by the participation of the Russian Orthodox Church in their work. The parish council persistently asked the head of the Mission to convey words of gratitude to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill noting that his good gesture will stay in the memory of the present and future generations of local Christians. Before the meeting began, Archimandrite Alexander and his party visited the Magdala representation of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in which they celebrated the Sunday Divine Liturgy at the church of St Mary Magdalene Equal-to-the-Apostles. Archive Challenges to Christian presence in Holy Land: acts of vandalism against shrines continue 3 January 2022 year 15:39 On December 30, 2021, at the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission Metochion of Righteous Tabitha in Tel-Aviv-Jaffa, an act of vandalism was committed by an unknown person: several graves in the Christian Orthodox cemetery located in the territory of the Russian church were desecrated. In the daytime, an unknown young man, who covered his face by a hood and a mask, got into the metochion territory fr om the side of the nearby Israeli school, fell and then crashed several marble crosses that stood on the gravestones. The actions of the vandal were registered by a video camera. The Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem appealed to the police demanding that the culprit be found and punished. It should be noted that attacks on Christian shrines have become more frequent in recent times and, as statistics show, behind them are radical representatives of Judaic religious communities. It is not for the first time that such attacks are made on the metochion in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Moreover, at another well-known Russian place - the Metochion of St. Mary Magdalene Equal-to-the-Apostles on the Sea of Galilee cost - during the year 2021, local religious radicals repeatedly penetrated illegally the territory of the convent. They also committed several acts of desecration of holy icons and crosses. The illegal invasions into the territory of the convent were accompanied with not only verbal threats and acts of vandalism but also attempts to use physical force against sisters of the convent. These cases were registered in the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission’s appeals to police. Repeated acts of desecration of Christian shrines were committed at the Mission’s Metochion of the Prophet Elias in Haifa, wh ere unknown persons put offensive for Christians and openly satanic inscriptions and signs on the walls of the Orthodox church. Observing the locals’ growing religious intolerance towards the Christian community, His Beatitude Theophilos III, Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem and All Palestine, came out with an initiative to draw the attention of the public and Israeli authorities to the challenges thrown to the Christian presence in the Holy Land and attempts to violate there the peaceful coexistence of Christians, Muslims and Jews, sealed in the status quo. His initiative was supported by heads of the Christian Churches in the Holy Land. DECR Communication Service /Patriarchia.ru Календарь ← 7 December 2023 year

Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D. Peterson Скачать epub pdf GNOSTICISM GNOSTICISM. Divided about its origins, many scholars hold that it was a first and second century movement deeply influenced by Persian dualism, mediated by heretical Jewish and Christian thought, elements of popular pagan religion, and a sort of middlebrow Platonism (q.v.). The result for Christianity (Christian gnosticism) was a pattern of religious thinking that, though it spawned a bewildering variety of systems, had certain common traits: 1) the assertion that the physical world is evil; therefore 2) that its creator is evil and not the God of Jesus Christ, who only appeared to be human; thus 3) that the Old Testament is the work of an evil Demiurge while the Gospel of Christ is the message of the Divine Being. This dualism was further reflected in the division of human beings into two or three categories: the fleshly, i.e., those belonging wholly to this world and so immune to spiritual truth, and the spiritual, for whom Christ descended from the heavenly realm above this world of delusion. The spiritual are further divided into those who know the truth and those still unaware of who must receive the saving knowledge (q.v.), gnosis in Greek-hence the name of the movement. Gnosticism produced an immense literature, almost entirely lost until discovery of a 4th-c. cache of texts near the Egyptian village of Nag Hammadi in 1945 and 1946. The find included treatises, “gospels,” apocalypses, epistles, etc., many of which purported to come from an apostle, Mary Magdalene, or Christ himself. The response of the Great Church (q.v.) to gnosticism was twofold. While pointing out the pagan features of gnosticism and its emphasis on secrecy, Irenaeus of Lyons (q.v.) defended the public and continuous institutional integrity of the Church, its sacraments and Scriptures (q.v.), limited to the four Gospels, the epistles of Paul, and the Old Testament (Septuagint) Scripture. His defense included a vigorous apology for the created goodness of the world, the reality of the Incarnation, and the Eucharist (q.v.) as the central affirmation confirming all the above. The Alexandrians, Clement and Origen (qq.v.), sought to redeem the authentic interests of gnosticism in the subjective and experiential by exploring the human psyche and presenting an ideal and method of Christian spirituality. Hence Clement produced an outline of the Christian (orthodox) “gnostic” that foreshadowed the enlightened elders of later monasticism (q.v.), while Origen employed allegory (q.v.) to interpret Scripture, in particular the Old Testament, into a journal and guidebook of the soul’s return to God. (For Russian gnosticism see Doukhobors.) Читать далее Источник: The A to Z of the Orthodox Church/Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D. Peterson - Scarecrow Press, 2010. - 462 p.
