Protomartyr and Archdeacon Stephen Commemorated on December 27 The Holy Protomartyr and Archdeacon Stephen was the eldest of the seven deacons, appointed by the Apostles themselves, and therefore he is called “archdeacon.” He was the first Christian martyr, and he suffered for Christ when he was about thirty. In the words of Asterias, he was “the starting point of the martyrs, the instructor of suffering for Christ, the foundation of righteous confession, since Stephen was the first to shed his blood for the Gospel.” Filled with the Holy Spirit, Saint Stephen preached Christianity and defeated Jewish teachers of the Law in debate. The Jews maligned Saint Stephen, saying that he had uttered blasphemy against God and against Moses. Saint Stephen came before the Sanhedrin and the High Priest to answer these charges. He gave a fiery speech, in which he recounted the history of the Jewish nation, and denounced the Jews for persecuting the prophets, and also for executing the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ (Acts ch. 7). During his speech, Saint Stephen suddenly saw the heavens opened and Jesus Christ standing at the right hand of God. The Jews shouted and covered their ears, and rushed at him. They dragged him out of the city and stoned him, but the holy martyr prayed for his murderers. Far off on the heights stood the Mother of God with the holy Apostle John the Theologian, and She prayed fervently for the martyr. Before his death Saint Stephen said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. O Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.” Then he joyfully gave up his pure soul to Christ. The body of the holy Protomartyr Stephen, left to be eaten by beasts, was secretly taken up by the Jewish teacher Gamaliel and his son Habib, who buried Stephen on his estate. They both believed in Christ, and later received holy Baptism. Saint Stephen is also commemorated on August 2 (Translation of his relics) and on September 15 (Uncovering of his relics in the year 415). Troparion — Tone 4 Protomartyr and mighty warrior of Christ our God,/you were victorious in battle and crowned with glory, holy Stephen./You confounded the council of those who persecuted you,/beholding your Savior enthroned at the Father’s right hand./Never cease praying that our souls may be saved! Kontakion — Tone 3 Podoben: “Today the Virgin...”/Yesterday the Master appeared in the flesh among us,/today His servant departs from the flesh./Yesterday the King was born,/and today His servant is stoned to death;/for His sake, the divine Protomartyr Stephen is perfected through martyrdom. Palestinian Authority Limits Christmas Celebrations in West Bank      The Palestinian Authority has asked municipalities to tone down their public Christmas celebrations this year amid escalating violence between Palestinians and Israelis. Hana Amireh, who heads a government committee on churches in the West Bank, confirmed the Palestinian Authority is requesting “a certain decrease” in festivities following the deaths of dozens of Palestinians since mid-September. The majority of them were killed during clashes with Israeli forces or carrying out terrorist attacks, according to the Israeli government. Amireh said the government has asked the municipality of Bethlehem, the town where Jesus was born and where official Palestinian celebrations of Christmas take place, not to set off holiday fireworks this year and to limit the festive lights and decorations that traditionally adorn the town to two main streets. Although Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah will light the towering Christmas tree in Manger Square he will not participate in a festive post-lighting dinner hosted by the Bethlehem municipality, Amireh said. The colorful annual Christmas procession, which includes the heads of churches and drum-beating Palestinian scouts, will be held as usual. News of the limitations upset Palestinian Christians, who comprise less than 2 percent of the population in the West Bank and Israel. “I’m truly disappointed,” Ekram Juha, director of the Bethlehem mayor’s office, said of the Palestinian Authority’s plans. Juha, who described herself as a “Christian and a believer,” said Palestinians “have a difficult situation but we’ve lived with this situation for many years and celebrations have gone on. This is the place where Jesus was born and if you limit Christmas celebrations here you are limiting something spiritual and holy. I can understand limiting celebrations elsewhere, but not here in Bethlehem.” ChristianHeadlines.com 2 декабря 2015 г. Support A Mission Priest in Zimbabwe Alex Goodwin      Zimbabwe is home to just a few Orthodox priests who have committed their lives to serving the faithful in that country. Though Orthodoxy has had a presence in Zimbabwe since the early 20th century, for decades the Church was limited to serving Orthodox expatriates from Greece and elsewhere. In 1993, a young Zimbabwean named Raphael received a scholarship to study in Greece for an army officer’s training course. While he was in Greece, he was introduced to Orthodoxy. In August 2002, he was ordained to the holy priesthood and became the first Orthodox priest from Zimbabwe. Fr. Raphael fell asleep in the Lord in 2012, but the sharing of the Gospel in Zimbabwe continues through other mission priests who have followed in Fr. Raphael’s footsteps. Today, the Archdiocese of Zimbabwe is overseen by His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim and includes seven priests, two of whom are sponsored through the OCMC’s Support a Mission Priest (SAMP) program. One of these priests is Dn. Savvas Takayi. He was born in the rural area of Domboshava in 1988 as the oldest of seven children. At the age of sixteen, a friend invited him to the Orthodox cathedral in Harare, and he was moved to become Orthodox. In 2007, he was sent to study theology at the Patriarchate in Alexandria, Egypt. He was ordained to the diaconate in 2011. He currently serves the Mother of God parish in Warren Park. Mission priests like Dn. Savvas are crucial to reach the millions of people who do not yet know Christ. Around the world, mission priests serve to bring the gospel message to all nations. You can share in the ministry of these mission priests through OCMC’s Support a Mission Priest (SAMP) program. Please keep our SAMP mission priests in your prayers! Please prayerfully consider giving to the SAMP program so that Orthodox priests abroad can continue to minister to their parishes and to those who need Jesus Christ.

Muscovite Builds Record-Breaking Jesus Statue in Syria October 23, 2013 A bronze statue of Jesus Christ, taller than the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, has appeared in war-torn Syria. The statue, titled " I Have Come to Save the World " was apparently the brainchild of Yury Gavrilov, a 49-year-old Muscovite who runs an organization in London called the St. Paul and St. George Foundation. The project was backed by both the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian government, which takes an active interest in Syria, as seen in recent events. Russia also has a navy base on Syria " s Mediterranean sea coast. Despite the statue " s Russian connection, it was cast in Armenia and made by an Armenian sculptor, Artush Papoian. Syria " s ethnic Armenians have been fleeing the country in droves since the conflict began, to the extent that Armenia has built a new settlement called New Aleppo to house them, the news website Eurasianet.org reported. The settlement is named after the war-torn northern Syrian city where most of Syria " s ethnic Armenian population live. Some 7,000 of Syria " s ethnic Armenians are now seeking refuge in neighboring Armenia, Armenian news agencies reported. The Armenian statue was installed Oct. 14, which coincided with two religious holidays — both Orthodox Christian and Muslim. Orthodox Christians celebrate the feast day of the Protection of the Most Holy Virgin Mary and Muslims celebrate Kurban Bayram. Though all military activity was suspended in the region while the statue was being installed, the project has been in the works since 2005 and is not related to the current military crisis in the country, Komsomolskaya Pravda reported.            The statue is located on a mountaintop near the city of Saidnaya. The statue is near the Monastery of the Cherubim, perched above the historic pilgrimage route from Constantinople to Jerusalem and is 2,100 meters above sea level. The statue stands at 39 meters tall together with the plinth, which is taller than Rio de Janeiro " s Christ the Redeemer statue, which stands at 38 meters. The enormous statue can be seen from neighboring countries Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine and Israel. The director of Gavrilov " s St. Paul and St. George Foundation, Samir el-Gadban, commented on the importance of the statue in the war-torn country and expressed his hopes for the future. " " We hope that this sculptural composition brings peace and love to the hearts of people and that our work will help restore peace and calm in this long-suffering region, " " he told Komsomolskaya Pravda. Tweet Oldest Christian church in Turkey to be opened to visitors Source: Blagovest-Info Tbilisi, September 14, 2016      A Christian church of the fourth century which was discovered in 2014, twenty meters from shore at the bottom of Lake Iznik in the Turkish province of Bursa, will be opened to visitors, reports Karibche.ambebi.ge . Restoration of the basilica was carried out over the past several months. According to Mustafa Sahin, head of the Archeology Department of Bursa (Uluda ) University, the church of the Roman period will be open to the public the first and last Saturdays of every month. The newly-restored basilica was originally dedicated in honor of the Holy Martyr Neophytes who was slain by Roman legionaries in 303 AD precisely on the site of the church. According to Turkish archeologists, the church was damaged by an earthquake in 740 AD and subsequently submerged under the lake waters. Translated by Dmitry Lapa Blagovest-Info 15 сентября 2016 г. The cult of Egypt is focused on the person of Amun-Re, whom I have identified above with the one true God. On a revised chronology, this is the early Israelite monarchy, and the flourishing of culture, wisdom, and piety correlates with King Solomon, who taught the world wisdom. Josephus tells us that the queen of Sheba was the “queen of Egypt and Ethiopia”, and the traditional Ethiopian name for the queen is almost identical to the throne name of the famous Hatshepshut. Damien Mackey has argued that Hatshepshut’s chief advisor, Senenmut , ought to be identified with King Solomon, under the spelling of “Shelemoth.” Solomon is a New Joseph, another great philosopher, and we see that God through Israel again seeds the ancient world with philosophy and culture. The Greeks said that they received their philosophy from the Egyptians. If this is the case, then the Greeks ultimately received philosophy, as the Fathers declared, from the great Hebrew philosophers- chief among them Joseph and Solomon. Let me make one final point. The Greeks recall a great lawgiver, Solon, who began as a wise king but gradually came to enslave his people. It is at least plausible, given the similarity of both the name and the narrative, that this is a Hellenized tradition about King Solomon. Furthermore, the Greeks recall that Solon spent a significant amount of time in Egypt. Given the above, this correlates with Solomon/Senenmut’s time in Egypt during the period of peace stretching across the ancient world. Noah blesses the sons of Japheth and calls them to dwell in the tents of Shem. St. Paul, having grown up in Tarsus, would have studied the great Japhethite philosophers. When God calls him, his goal is not simply to reconcile Jews and Gentiles, but to reconcileJews and Greeks. Paul’s vocation, both literally and symbolically, is that of the tent-builder. He builds up Shem’s tents so that Japheth may come and glorify it with his philosophy and culture. Through this survey of history, we have seen, however, that this culture did not develop in a vacuum. God repeatedly seeded the ancient world with Hebrew philosophy and culture, so that while He was growing Israel up to maturity, He was likewise preparing the nations for the coming of Christ. This trajectory climaxed in the coming of Jesus Christ, the marriage of Noahic and Abrahamic covenants, producing what Fr. Georges Florovsky called Christian Hellenism. It is time that we see the world through new eyes. Neither God nor His people have sat on the sidelines of history. They both are at the center of history, the goal of which is the birth of Jesus Christ and the divinization of all mankind. Seraphim Hamilton 2 ноября 2015 г.
