| Archive New Russian Orthodox church consecrated in Spanish Torrevieja 27 March 2018 year 14:28 March 25, 2018 – Bishop Nestor of Korsun, administrator of the Korsun diocese, celebrated the Grand Consecration of a new parish Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God in Torrevieja, Alicante Province, Spain. During the consecration, the relics of the Holy Unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian were placed at the holy altar. After a procession with the cross, Bishop Nestor, after anointing the holy relics with myrrh, placed them together with the consecration deed into a reliquary and seal it with reliquary wax. This placement of a part of holy relics at the basis of the altar means that the Universal Church in the period of persecution was established on the bones of martyrs. In the newly consecrated church, the archpastor celebrated the Divine Liturgy. He was assisted by Archpriest Yaroslav Dybach, rector of the Parish of St. George in Valencia, Archpriest Sergiy Prosandeyed, Hiero-schema-monk Nicholas (Serbian Church), Deacon Roman Onika, and other guests of the parish in holy orders. There were some 400 worshipers including parishioners, pilgrims and guests of the community from various parishes in Spain. After the liturgy, Bishop Nestor delivered an archpastoral homily, congratulated the community with the opening of a new church and presented laudatory diplomas to churchwardens and parishioners who proved to be the most active participants in the purchasing and adorning of the new church building. The building to be later arranged according to the canons of the interior decoration of the Orthodox church, was bought in autumn 2017. At the same time, the community bought an adjacent plot of land next to the picturesque Park of Europe 400 meters from the Mediterranean coastline. According to a report from the diocese of Korsun, the purchase of a new church facility became possible thanks to the active actions of the clergy and parishioners who managed in a short time to raise the sum necessary to continue financing the project. | This is not the place to enter into a discussion on the different approaches to the Terra Sancta in East and West, for further differentiations would be necessary. For the rest, the city of Constantinople itself became so loaded with relics from the Holy Land that it became a real pole of attraction for Western pilgrims and crusaders desiring, and partly succeeding to transfer the sacred treasury (in its spiritual and material brilliance) to Paris and elsewhere, an appropriation of what in its polymorphous richness and density was already a “virtual” appropriation or “copy” of the emptiness of the Holy Sepulchre. Among the twelfth-century and later pilgrims who voyaged to the Bosphorus were those from Novgorod, many of whom were familiar with their Mandylion in its double reference to Constantinople and Jerusalem, which in the end fuses into one, transcending them both in a spiritual actualization of grace in its own sacred space and its own nature as iconic “contraction”. In conclusion, I would like to insist on two points or perspectives: firstly, that the Mandylion is a phenomenon that required a physical distance between itself and Jerusalem (because it constitutes it in relation to another place), whereas the Holy Land itself is signed by the footprints which to a greater or lesser degree resisted the desire of translation. The second point is central for the research project mentioned above, namely the necessity to study the modes of transfer, transformation and reconstitution of holy sites or places (loca sancta) into sacred spaces with their respective architectonical, liturgical, devotional, iconical, iconographical etc. order 768 . This, however, should constitute the subject of another conference in Moscow or elsewhere. Liturgically commemorated on July 15/28, a day known as the Baptism of Rus " , St. Vladimir reposed one thousand years ago in the year 1015. Throughout Russia and Ukraine the Orthodox faithful prayerfully remembered their father at festive Divine Liturgies, cross processions, and art festivals held in his honor. In the evening of July 28, a formal concert program, attended by numerous clergy including hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Canada as well as political dignitaries, was held in Kiev at the St. Michael " s Square, honoring the spiritual and poltical legacy of Great Prince Vladimir. With an introduction by Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko, the concert features uplifting ecclesial and traditional folk songs of the Slavic people, sure to prove inspiring for all Orthodox faithful.
