Patriarch Kirill calls upon the plenitude of the Russian Church to continue praying for peace in Ukraine Source: DECR Communication Service February 2, 2016      On February 2, 2016, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, presenting his report to the Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church, reminded the bishops that in the pre-council period, such commemorative dates were celebrated as the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Russia and the Millennium of the Repose of the Holy Prince Vladimir Equal-to-the-Apostles. ‘The conscious choice made by the holy prince and followed by the people of Rus’ is not just an event of the past’, His Holiness said, ‘We all, our peoples in the unity of each of them and in their common unity, should again and again confirm this choice, overcoming by the power of their will, intellect, heart and spirit the resistance we encounter not only among ourselves but also in the world around us. ‘Our people, who accepted holy baptism and became part of the rich depository of the Eastern Christian civilization, could produce a multitude of great spiritual warriors, zealots of faith and devotion. We commemorated the 700th anniversary of the repose of the greatest of them – St. Sergius of Radonezh in 2014. Today the example of his life and spiritual feat is especially needed by our society and his behests that we should preserve fraternal love and unity resounds today as a distinctive alarm. ‘The Holy Prince Vladimir and St. Sergius made the most important impact not only on the spiritual unity of our people but also on the national unity of earlier separate forces. ‘In the recent years, we have witnessed how those who have rejected Christian principles bring tragic and sometimes bloody division in the Ukrainian people, one of the peoples – heirs of the Holy Prince Vladimir. We all should give all possible support to His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry, the episcopate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, its clergy and faithful in their efforts for peace. Your Beatitude, your efforts are an example of how Orthodox Christians seek unity there where division is propagated and sow love there where hatred is spread. I ask you all, dear fellow-archpastors to continue praying together with your flock for our brothers and sisters who are in trouble in the Ukrainian land and for those who are driven away from their churches and subjected to mockery and insult. Let us continue praying for all Ukraine, so that peace and love of one another may come to it’, Patriarch Kirill said in conclusion. Tunisia: Divine Liturgy celebrated in a region of radical Muslims Bizerte, October 26, 2014 With the blessing of His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Theodore II, Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the Tunisian city of Bizerte, in a region with the largest concentration of radical Islamists. This took place last Sunday, reports Romfea .      The small Orthodox Church of St. Alexander Nevsky was built in the port city in 1939. In spite of opposition from the city security services, a week before the forthcoming elections in the country, Metropolitan Alexios of Carthage together with head of the Greek community in Tunisia Dindisco and rector of the local Russian Orthodox church Archpriest Dimitry Netsvetayev came to serve at the church “with the closed doors,” and to encourage six Orthodox women who are living with their families under the constant death threats from Salafis (a strict Sunni Muslim sect). In his sermon, Metropolitan Alexios said that by raising the son of the widow of Nain from the dead, Christ demonstrated His victory over evil. “Future resurrection and salvation is the reward of all true Christians, especially those living in such dangerous regions as Bizerta so that the light of the true faith may not die away here,” the archpastor emphasized. “The words of the Lord, “Fear not, little flock” (Luke 12:32) have become a tangible reality here. And this testimony in the most terrible and difficult circumstances is strengthening Christians all over the world,” the Metropolitan said. In conclusion, Metropolitan Alexios has noted that the Christians from the capital came that day to support and encourage the tiny Orthodox Christian community of Bizerta. 28 октября 2014 г. Revival of Orthodoxy in South Sudan South Sudan, January 15, 2015 By grace of God and the blessings of His Beatitude Theodore II, the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, Metropolitan Narkissos (Gammoh) of Nubia founded the first missionary center in South Sudan – the newest independent state in the world, a long-suffering nation plagued by civil war for more than 30 years, with little cessation of hostilities. This first missionary center will be named in honor of the glorious Saint Apostle and Evangelist Mark, the founder of the Alexandrian Church. The missionary endeavors will be housed on Mongala, an eastern suburb of the capital Juba, 500 meters from the White Nile.      In his short speech, His Eminence conveyed to the faithful the absolute love and watchful interest of the Patriarch for South Sudan, praised the few Greek, who remained in the area despite all the difficulties and dangers, and wished this day to be the beginning of a lasting peace and unity for South Sudan, so that this wounded people will prosper and advance. Before the dismissal, the bishop blessed and distributed a Saint Basil’s pie.      On January 12, the Metropolitan was received by Mr. Moses Telar Cindwt, the country’s Minister of Religious Affairs, to whom he stressed the historical presence and contribution of the Orthodox Church in the region and the will to continue this presence and offer in the future, now that South Sudan is an independent state. Archive Archbishop Theodosius of Sebastia: We demand to stop systematic persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by Kiev authorities 28 March 2023 year 16:24 On March 27, 2023, Archbishop during his meeting with a church delegation in Jerusalem: “We resolutely condemn the systematic harassment and persecutions against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church organized by the Kiev authorities, who, as we know, are implementing western programs hostile to the entire Orthodox Church. These programs run contrary to her values and mission and threaten her very existence.” The publication about this meeting quotes the Archbishop as saying: ‘We consider the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as the persecution of the entire Church, since at the moment there remains a threat of evicting bishops, priests and monks from the Lavra in Kiev, this ancient historical monument well-known as one of the largest monasteries of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.” “The Ukrainian Orthodox Church headed by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry is subjected to systematic hostile campaigns with many threats and assaults,” Archbishop Theodosius noted, pointing out that “her message has always been to preserve love, brotherhood and peace.” Archbishop Theodosius underscored: “We demand urgent actions from the entire Orthodox community for stopping these severe persecutions. His Beatitude Onufry is a holy man of God. He visited us in Jerusalem several times. He is notable for his particular humility, spirituality and wisdom. He is being guided by these principles now, at the darkest hour and under the most difficult circumstances in the historical monuments of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. We express our support to all religious leaders who have spoken about the necessity of putting an end to the persecution of the UOC.” The hierarch expressed his hope that such statements “would become a strong deterrent for the Kiev authorities whose actions towards the Ukrainian Orthodox Church are hostile and who resort to incitement, thus carrying out the instructions of their masters.” He continued to say: “We state that we do not recognize legitimacy of any other organization created in Ukraine to replace the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and call on the entire Christian and civilized world to exert all possible efforts to stop systematic persecution of the UOC.” Archbishop Theodosius of Sebastia has warned against the danger of violation that the authorities could use for the eviction of monks from their monasteries, scetes, and churches.
