The early Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Archbishop Theognost, abbot of the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. The late Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the abbot of Sretensky Monastery Bishop Tikhon (Shevkunov) of Egorievsk with the brethren, alumnae of Sretensky Seminary and numerous guests clergy. During the Divine Liturgy His Grace Bishop Tikhon celebrated the ordination to the priesthood of Deacon John Kudlasevich, a graduated of Sretensky Seminary. At the end of the service, Vladyka Tikhon, with all those gathered in the church, read a prayer to Hieromartyr Hilarion.                                              In his homily Bishop Tikhon noted: “Vladyka Hilarion is an unusually important example of Christian life for us all and for future generations. It’s no accident that in the hieromartyr’s kontakion it says ‘thou wast not afraid of the minions of the coming Antichrist.’ We all know what testing befell the Christians of the Russian Orthodox Church in the 1920s. In those days, when it seemed that everything was collapsing all around, Hieromartyr Hilarion meekly accepted everything as the special allowance of God, as the Providence of God and tried to penetrate into the Divine plan for his times, for his contemporaries, for himself… What amazing lessons Vladyka Hilarion has taught us. From very earliest childhood he felt the teaching in the Law of God and in the sciences that reveal the Law of God in history. He opened the Divine world for us and from very earliest childhood was wise, comprehending the world.”                     The night before at the All Night Vigil an important event in the lives of the first year seminarians took place—they received the blessing of the rector, Bishop Tikhon, to wear the cassock.

Michael Prokurat, Alexander Golitzin, Michael D. Peterson Скачать epub pdf BELAVIN, TIKHON BELAVIN, TIKHON, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, American missionary, martyr, St. (19 January 1865–7 April 1925). Baptized Basil, he graduated from the St. Petersburg Theological Academy in 1888 and was appointed to the faculty of the Pskov Theological Seminary. Tonsured a monk and ordained priest in 1891, he became rector of the Kazan and Kholm Theological Seminaries, and in 1897 was made archimandrite and consecrated Bishop of Lublin. In 1898 he was appointed Bishop of the Aleutian Islands and Alaska with the bishop’s seat in San Francisco. Arriving at age thirty-three as one of the youngest hierarchs of the Russian Church, he entered his cathedral church in San Francisco on 23 December. In evaluating his archpastoral assignment, three difficult circumstances stand out: 1) The Missionary Diocese included Alaska, Canada, and the U.S., and was too big to successfully administrate; 2) this diocese of the Russian Church included all ethnic Orthodox from throughout the world, a huge diversity of languages and cultures; and 3) neither New York, Chicago, nor San Francisco had proper church buildings. In response to this circumstance, in 1902 two cathedrals were completed in New York, one Russian, one Syrian. In 1903 Holy Trinity Cathedral in Chicago was completed, as designed by Louis Sullivan. (This is the only Sullivan church in the world-built under the supervision of Fr. Joh n Kochurov [q.v.].) In 1903 to 1904 Tikhon successfully established an auxiliary bishopric in Alaska with its cathedral at Sitka and an auxiliary bishopric of Brooklyn for the Syro-Arabic Mission for which Archimandrite Raphael Hawaweeny (q.v.) was consecrated; at the same time, the Greek Holy Trinity parish in New York became the private property of three Greek laymen. In 1905 the episcopal see was transferred from San Francisco to New York and Tikhon was made archbishop. In 1906, after the San Francisco earthquake, Tikhon acquired the present site of Holy Trinity Cathedral, San Francisco (completed in 1909), one of the oldest Orthodox parishes in the western hemisphere.

His Beatitude also thanked Father George and the Cathedral’s clergy for their hospitality and love. In his homily at the end of the Divine Liturgy , His Beatitude pointed out that, “In today’s Gospel, we read that the crowds gathered around the Lord Jesus Christ and ‘sought to touch him, for power went out from him and healed them all.’ Perhaps, hearing this, we wish that we, too, could have seen Jesus with our eyes, touched him with our hands, and have received healing for the wounds of our bodies, our souls, our hearts. But of course, the Lord is always present to us, not just spiritually, in our inner being, but physically, through the saints.” Metropolitan Tikhon then remarked that, “Wherever there is sanctity, there is Jesus Christ. And in some cases, in accordance with God’s providence, the holiness of a person is so great that, even after his death, his body remains with us, visibly full of God’s healing grace, always making Christ’s power present in our lives. This is the case with Saint Nicholas.”
