Cave presumably containing tomb of queen Tamar found Magas (the Ingush Republic), May 22, 2014 Workers of a road brigade in Ingushetia have discovered an ancient cave after a landslide, which may contain either treasures of the capital of Alania or tomb of the Georgian queen Tamar, reported deputy director of E.I. Krupnov’s Archaeological Centre UmalatGadiev to RIA-Novosti . According to preliminary information, during construction of the road to the international “Mountain tournament” venue an earth slide occurred. During the clean-up entrance to a rock cave was exposed, faced with dressed masonry. Such caves in the mountainous Ingushetia were discovered before as well. They date back to the 9th-14th centuries,” he said. According to Gadiev, it can be supposed that the discovered cave, or, in other words, the burial vault, became the resting-place of the Georgian queen Tamar. It can also be suggested that in the same cave the treasures of Magas—capital of the ancient state of Alania—were hidden. “It is still difficult to confirm anything since it is just a famous tradition, and serious research work has not been carried out yet. After excavations and a number of examinations we will be able to speak with confidence,” stressed the archaeologist. Alania was a medieval state on the territory of North Caucasus which was inhabited by nomadic Persian-speaking tribes of Scythian-Sarmatian origin. It lost its independence after the Mongol-Tatar invasion in 1238-1239. Holy queen Tamar of Georgia, whose reign (1184 - 209/1213) was known as “The golden age” of Georgian culture, devoted much attention to foreign policy, expansion of boundaries of the state, which stretched from Pontus to Gurgan (the Caspian sea), from Sper to Derbent, Khazaria and Scythia. She secured in that time a dominant position for Georgia in all Asia Minor. Tamar took care for the spiritual life of the people, built churches, gave alms, and helped the poor. She was considered one of the most venerated woman-rulers of Georgia. The Georgian Orthodox Church canonized her and Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II of All Georgia declared the year 2013 “the year of queen Tamar”. Pravoslavie.ru 23 мая 2014 г. George Soros funds Greek opposition Athens, February 26, 2013 There has been a sweeping reaction to publication by the authoritative German business weekly WirtschaftsWoche, according to Аgionoros.ru . The editorial article states that the American multi-millionaire and investor George Soros is funding the second most popular political party in Greece, SYRIZA. According to Wirtschaftswoche, the American financier helped arrange the visit of SYRIZA’s left-wing radical coalition leader Alexis Cipras to the USA, during which the Greek politician became acquainted with influential representatives of American political " establishment " . There Cipras received from them a distinct “go ahead” to “rule”. German journalists suppose that Soros wants to use Cipras’s party to bring pressure on Germany. The SYRIZA coalition has for long time been famous for its anti-German rhetoric; and the speech of the SYRIZA delegation in the USA was full of severe criticism of Angela Merkel’s policy. " Why is Soros funding such anti-capitalist instigators like Cipras with his tirades against Germany? No one talks aloud about this out of fear before the powerful billionaire. But one manager confidentially supposed that, " Soros wants to revenge against Germany. " People close to family circles note that Soros has a " love-hate relationship to Germany. He has personal interests concerning development of events in Europe and Germany, " state German journalists. However, some Greek analysts see in Soros' interest in Greek left-wing radicals another hidden motive. SYRIZA has been actively collaborating for long time with nongovernmental organizations in Greece, funded by Soros. The coalition of left-wing radicals actively supports sexual, ethnic and religious minorities. Many call the policy of this party anti-national as its leaders deny the genocide of Greeks in Asia Minor and stand for territorial concessions for Greece’s neighbors. The SYRIZA coalition is a consistent opponent of preserving the Church's influence on Greek society. It supports the removal of chaplains from the army, opposes the funding of priests' salaries from the state budget, and demands full separation of the Church from the state. Hieromartyr Theodotus the Bishop of Cyrenia Commemorated on March 2 The Hieromartyr Theodotus, a native of Galatia in Asia Minor, was Bishop of Cyrenia in Cyprus. During a time of persecution against Christians under the impious emperor Licinius (311-324), Saint Theodotus openly preached Christ, calling on the pagans to abandon idolatry and turn to the true God. Sabinus, the governor of Cyprus, ordered that Bishop Theodotus be arrested and brought to trial. When he heard about this order, the saint did not wait for the soldiers to be sent after him, but immediately went to the governor saying, “I, whom you seek, am here. I have shown myself in order to preach Christ my God.” The governor ordered that the saint be beaten without mercy, suspended from a tree, raked with sharp implements, and then be taken to prison. Five days later Saint Theodotus was brought to the governor, who presumed that after his tortures the bishop would prefer to renounce Christ, rather than endure new sufferings. However, Saint Theodotus did not cease to preach about Christ. At first they put the saint on an iron grate, under which they lit a fire, and then hammered nails into his feet and let him go. Many witnessed the sufferings of the martyr. Astonished at the saint’s endurance and his divinely-inspired speech, they came to believe in Christ. Learning of this, Sabinus gave orders to stop the torture and throw the saint into prison. During the reign of Saint Constantine the Great (May 21), the freedom to confess their faith was given to all Christians, and among those set free from prison was Saint Theodotus. The saint returned to Cyrenia and after two years serving as bishop he peacefully fell asleep in the Lord in about the year 326. John Anthony McGuckin Chorepiscopos JEFFREY B. PETTIS The term chorepiscopos referred in the early church to the leading cleric of a small church in the countryside (Chora), a bishop of unimportant rural regions who had been appointed to oversee churches located outside the metropolitan city where the ruling bishop resided. Generally, he was in episcopal orders, but sometimes the word also seems to indicate a priest who has been given extensive authorization by the diocesan. One of the earliest chore- piscopoi is a certain Zoticus, a 2nd-century bishop of Cumana, a Phrygian village. By the 4th century, chorepiscopoi were quite numerous, especially in Asia Minor. They generally appeared to exercise all of the functions of the bishop except for higher ordinations. Fifteen of them signed in their own right at the Council of Nicea. Even so, the chorepiscopos seems to have been distinct from both bishops and presbyters (Athanasius, Second Apology 85; PG.25.400B), being wholly subject to the direction of the diocesan. Over time there still developed concern that the chorepiscopoi had too much freedom to exercise their office apart from the ruling bishop. In Canon 13 of the Council of Ancyra (341) the powers of the chorepiscopos were restricted, and he was authorized to ordain only the lower ranks of the clergy. Canon 10 of the Dedication Synod of Antioch (341) also made it clear that a chorepiscopos stands under the immediate jurisdiction of the local bishop. He could ordain priests or deacons only with the bishop’s written permission, and could officiate in a city church only in the presence of the city bishop and the council of presbyters (Council of Neo- Caesarea, Canons 13–14). The Council of Sardica (342/343) determined that no chorepiscopos should be consecrated in a place where an ordinary bishop presides. The Council of Laodicea (380) started the process whereby chorepiscopoi were phased out in favor of “visiting priests” (periodeutai) specially delegated as supervisory agents of the bishop. Such an archpriest was authorized to sit and vote in councils (Council of Ephesus 431). Several chorepiscopoi signed as representatives of their diocesans at the Council of Chalcedon (451), but the office was destined to disappear in favor of a system of delegated senior priests, or alternatively co-adjutor bishops, who extended the administrative reach of a ruling diocesan bishop. Martyr Conon of Isauria Commemorated on March 5 Photo: Days.Pravoslavie.Ru The Holy Martyr Conon of Isauria was born in Bethany, a village near the Asia Minor city of Isauria, whose inhabitants had accepted Christianity from the Apostle Paul. From his youth, Saint Conon was accorded the special protection of the “Archistrategos” (“Leader of the Heavenly Hosts”) Michael, who appeared to him and assisted him in many difficult circumstances in life. At the insistence of his parents, Conon was betrothed to a maiden named Anna. He persuaded her to live with him in virginity after the wedding. The young couple lived as brother and sister, devoting themselves entirely to God. Saint Conon brought also his parents to the Christian Faith. His father, Saint Nestor, received a martyr’s death for denouncing idol-worshippers. After burying both his mother and wife, Saint Conon continued his service to God, devoting himself entirely to monastic works, fasting and prayer. In his declining years the holy ascetic was glorified with the gift of wonderworking. By virtue of his preaching and miracles many pagans were converted to Christ. It is said that even the evil spirits were forced to serve him. When a persecution against Christians broke out in Isauria, one of the first to suffer was Saint Conon. He was subjected to fierce torments for his refusal to offer sacrifice to idols. When the people of Isauria learned of the tortures to which the saint was being subjected, they came forth bearing arms to defend the martyr. Frightened by the people’s wrath, the torturers fled, and the Isaurians found the martyr wounded and bloodied at the place of torture. Saint Conon wished to endure martyrdom for the Lord, but he lived two more years. Saint Conon died in the second century and was buried beside his parents and wife. Troparion — Tone 5 Armed with the grace of the Spirit,/You crushed the power of ungodliness/And shone forth with miracles./Dyed in the streams of your blood, O martyr Conon,/You glorify God, who through you grants us grace and great mercy! Troparion — Tone 4 Your holy martyrs Conan and Onesimus, O Lord,/Through their sufferings have received incorruptible crowns from You, our God./For having Your strength, they laid low their adversaries,/And shattered the powerless boldness of demons./Through their intercessions, save our souls! Kontakion — Tone 3 Having lived on earth in purity, like an angel,/You were counted worthy to converse with the bodiless hosts./You brought your parents to the knowledge of Christ/And having confessed the one God in Trinity,/You suffered to the shedding of your blood!/Martyr Conon, ever entreat him for the sake of us all! On January 6, 2016, a Greek Orthodox Epiphany celebration will take place in Izmir, for the first time since the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922. In fact, the Greek Orthodox community has received permission from the Turkish authorities to perform the Diving for the Holy Cross ceremony on the local pier. “For the first year we will be performing the Blessing of the Waters at the port of Izmir. Officially, this is the first year. We had also done it around 10 years ago, but not officially. This time we have received a license from the Turkish government, the Ministry of the Interior,” said Father Kyrillos Sykis. Therefore, on the day of the Epiphany the community will celebrate in the church of Agia Fotini. At 12:30 p.m. the Blessing of the waters will take place on the waterfront of Izmir, opposite the historical building of the old Greek consulate. At least three groups will travel from Athens, Mytilene and Chios to Izmir in order to attend the Epiphany celebration. “We hope that since we have created an orthodox community here, we can create something that will continue on,” explained Father Kyrillos Sykis. At the moment, the Orthodox community of Izmir includes about 300 Greeks, while there are also Russians, Georgians and other Orthodox ethnicities, bringing the total between 7,000 and 8,000 people. St. Hypatius the Wonderworker and Bishop of Gangra Commemorated on March 31 Hieromartyr Hypatius, Bishop of Gangra, was bishop of the city of Gangra in Paphlagonia (Asia Minor). In the year 325 he participated in the First Ecumenical Council at Nicea, at which the heresy of Arius was anathematized. When Saint Hypatius was returning in 326 from Constantinople to Gangra, followers of the schismatics Novatus and Felicissimus fell upon him in a desolate place. The heretics ran him through with swords and spears, and threw him into a swamp. Like the Protomartyr Stephen, Saint Hypatius prayed for his murderers. An Arian woman struck the saint on the head with a stone, killing him. The murderers hid his body in a cave, where a Christian who kept straw there found his body. Recognizing the bishop’s body, he hastened to the city to report this, and the inhabitants of Gangra piously buried their beloved archpastor. After his death, the relics of Saint Hypatius were famous for numerous miracles, particularly for casting out demons and for healing the sick. From of old the hieromartyr Hypatius was particularly venerated in the Russian land. Thus in the year 1330 the Ipatiev monastery was built at Kostroma, on the place where the Mother of God appeared with the Pre-eternal Christ Child, the Apostle Philip, and the hieromartyr Hypatius, Bishop of Gangra. This monastery later occupied a significant place in the spiritual and social life of the nation, particularly during the Time of Troubles. The ancient copies of the Life of the hieromartyr Hypatius were widely distributed in Russian literature, and one of these was incorporated into THE READING MENAION of Metropolitan Macarius (1542-1564). In this Life there is an account of the appearance of the Savior to Saint Hypatius on the eve of the martyr’s death. The entry for the saint’s Feast consists of his Life, some prayers, and words of praise and instruction. The pious veneration of Saint Hypatius was also expressed in Russian liturgical compositions. During the nineteenth century a new service was written for the hieromartyr Hypatius, distinct from the services written by Saint Joseph the Studite, contained in the March MENAION. Tweet Нравится Venerable Xenia of Rome, and her two female servants Commemorated on January 24 Photo: http://days.pravoslavie.ru/ Saint Xenia of Rome, in the world Eusebia, was the only daughter of an eminent Roman senator. From her youth she loved God, and wished to avoid the marriage arranged for her. She secretly left her parental home with two servants devoted to her, and set sail upon a ship. Through the Providence of God she met the head of the monastery of the holy Apostle Andrew in Milassa, a town of Caria (Asia Minor). She besought him to take her and her companions to Milassa. She also changed her name, calling herself Xenia [which means “stranger” or foreigner” in Greek]. At Milassa she bought land, built a church dedicated to Saint Stephen, and founded a woman’s monastery. Soon after this, Bishop Paul of Milassa made Xenia a deaconess, because of her virtuous life. The saint helped everyone: for the destitute, she was a benefactress; for the grief-stricken, a comforter; for sinners, a guide to repentance. She possessed a deep humility, accounting herself the worst and most sinful of all. In her ascetic deeds she was guided by the counsels of the Palestinian ascetic, Saint Euthymius. The sublime life of Saint Xenia drew many souls to Christ. The holy virgin died in 450 while she was praying. During her funeral, a luminous wreath of stars surrounding a radiant cross appeared over the monastery in the heavens. This sign accompanied the body of the saint when it was carried into the city, and remained until the saint’s burial. Many of the sick received healing after touching the relics of the saint. Troparion — Tone 3 Living the life of a stranger in the world,/you estranged yourself from every sin;/you abandoned comforts and fleeting honors/and betrothed yourself to your Immortal Bridegroom./Glorious Xenia, entreat Christ our God to grant us His great mercy. Kontakion — Tone 2 We celebrate the memory of the life you lived as a stranger in the world,/and as we honor you with love, O Xenia,/we praise Christ, who gave you power to grant healing to all;/ever pray to Him on our behalf.
