The teaching of St. Theophan the Recluse on the fight against passions and basic virtues Mikhail Dutka, student, Saratov Orthodox Theological Seminary Abstract : This article is devoted to the analysis of the teachings of St. Theophan the Recluse in the context of the general Orthodox ascetic teaching. The text sets out the classic for most Orthodox authors doctrine of the eight basic passions. Considerable attention is paid to the position of Archimandrite Cleopas (Ilie) about temptations coming from eight directions. The main part of the study is occupied by the consistent disclosure of the stages of development of sin – from adjudication to sinful deeds, according to the teaching on the passions of St. Theophan the Recluse. For comparison, throughout the work, elements of the ascetic teachings of other authors are given – St. Gregory the Theologian, St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Tikhon of Zadonsk, etc. Along with the teachings of St. Theophan about passions, his teaching about virtues is also analyzed. At the end of the article, a conclusion is made about the organic connection of the teachings of St. Theophan with the ascetic patristic teaching. Keywords : asceticism, passions, thoughts, virtues, Saint Theophan the Recluse. References 1 . Basil the Great. (2009) «Tvoreniya» [Creations]. In 2 volumes. Volume 2. Moscow, (in Russian). 2 . God is Where There is Humility. From the spiritual instructions of Elder Arsenie (Papacioc)/Православие.Ru God is Where There is Humility. From the spiritual instructions of Elder Arsenie (Papacioc) Archimandrite Arsenie (Papacioc), was one of the oldest and most respected of the elders still living in Romania. He was a representative of that golden pleiade of Romanian spiritual fathers of the twentieth century who have no equal in their fervency of faith, and experience in asceticism in the austere conditions of an uninhabited desert. He is like an abba of the ancient patericons, possessing experience combined with spiritual wisdom, a refined understanding of the secrets of the human soul, and a remarkable literary gift. Elder Arsenie labored in asceticism in the impenetrable forests of the Romanian mountains, together with Fr. Cleopa (Ilie), was persecuted by the god-hating authorities, and was imprisoned for his faith. He was the father-confessor of the monastery of St. Mary in Tekigroul, near Constanci. The wise Romanian elder, who would have turned 97 on August 11, 2011, reposed in the Lord on July 19, 2011. The following questions were asked of the elder by Archimandrite Ioannichie (Balan; 1930–2007)—a talented spiritual writer and poet, author of the Romanian Patericon, and co-ascetic and biographer of Elder Cleopa (Ilie). Elder Arsenie (Papacioc) —Fr. Arsenie, tell us, how can we be saved from our many earthly cares, so that we might have more time for prayer ? —Fr. Ioannichie, pure prayer from the heart and lips to God is a great work! Prayer is a sharp arrow that all the saints have aimed at heaven for thousands of years, and not only they, but also the simplest Christians. Prayer has pierced the heart of the heavens, perhaps it has reached those who were displeased with the earth " s inhabitants, and salvific replies have returned along the same path; thus was faith preserved on earth from generation to generation. Brother Christian, you also have your own history: you have entered into the great Christian union—the Church—and are forever redeemed by the Savior " s sacrifice. That means that you are of great worth, and you have a great and noble responsibility. Is it so difficult for each of us to simply and directly ask God to help us in our troubles and sufferings, and to thank Him?!

New Book: Ecumenism: Origins, Expectations, Disenchantment: The Proceedings of a Pan-Orthodox Conference, Available From Uncut Mountain Press A new book, Ecumenism: Origins, Expectations, Disenchantment: The Proceedings of a Pan-Orthodox Conference, edited by Protopresbyter Peter Heers is now available for pre-order from Uncut Mountain Press : For nearly 100 years the contemporary movement for the unification of Christianity has enjoyed the involvement of the Orthodox. Yet, despite the objections of many Orthodox Christians, the divisions among them which have developed on account of this participation, and the apparent lack of real progress toward the desired goal, there has never been a critical Pan-Orthodox examination of the phenomenon and Orthodox participation in it. This historic conference, sponsored by the School of Pastoral Theology of the University of Thessaloniki and the Society of Orthodox Studies, promises to fill this gap. Speakers at the conference included: Metropolitan Hierotheos (Vlachos) of Nafpaktos (Greece), Metropolitan Nathaniel of Nevrokop (Bulgaria), Metropolitan John of Velesson (Patriarchate of Serbia), Bishop Artemy of Raska and Prizren (Kossovo, Serbia), Bishop Panteleimon of Ghana (Patriarchate of Alexandria), Archimandrite Joseph of Xeropotamou Monastery (Mount Athos), Archpriest George Metallinos (Athens), Archpriest Valentin Asmus (Moscow Theological School), Archpriest Zourab Antadze (Church of George), Archimandrite Christophoros Tsiakkas (Church of Cyprus), Archimandrite Demetrios Vasiliadis (Patriarchate of Jerusalem), Archpriest Theodore Zisis (Thessaloniki), Archpriest George Dragas (Boston), Geron Moses (Mount Athos), Professor Jean-Claude Larchet (France), Demetrios Tselengidis (Thessaloniki), among the nearly sixty speakers in all. Young girls, for the sake of the Lord preserve your honor and good faith unblemished, while you have not yet received the status of mothers in the Church and society. And you also, widows and older mothers, keep an eye on the young, on your children, on all those around you. Do not be silent! Young mothers are in need of your example and sacrifice, young virgins are in need of your advice, and children and grandchildren of your prayer, tears, and reproofs. Begin everything with the Lord, with prayer, with regular confession, and greater humility and patience. More good mothers, and more honest and faithful widows and virgins today will mean more children in homes, more believers in church, more peace in families, less drunkenness, divorce, and abortions in the world, less disease and tears in the world and more souls in Paradise tomorrow! New Book: Noetic Prayer as the Basis of Mission and the Struggle Against Heresy from Uncut Mountain Press A new book entitled Noetic Prayer as the Basis of Mission and the Struggle Against Heresy by Archimandrite Ephraim Triandaphillopoulos is now available for pre-order from Uncut Mountain Press : " The unique Orthodox method of mission succinctly put forward in this book is both tremendously important to the life of the Church in non-Orthodox lands and, unfortunately, largely missing from contemporary missionary work. This present reality makes this book by Archimandrite Ephraim of Siatista all the more important and the need for every Orthodox Christian to read it all the more urgent. " In six short chapters Fr. Ephraim, like a spiritual doctor and specialist in spiritual diseases, dissects the disease of heresy and its cause, offering both as method of cure and cure itself the medicine of noetic prayer. Like a doctor whose knowledge is the culmination of decades and centuries of medical research, Fr. Ephraim does not present his own thinking alone, but rather he draws from the holy fathers and ascetics of every age, including our own, to reveal the path of the Orthodox missionary both as one healed and one healing the brokenness heresy brings. " This book is required reading for every Orthodox missionary, or, rather, every Orthodox Christian, for there is no Christian who does not seek to be made whole and bring wholeness and spiritual health to his neighbor. Wonderworking Icon from Romania’s Sihstria Monastery Carried in Procession against Coronavirus and Drought Source: Basilica.ro On Bright Tuesday, the wonderworking Axion Estin (It is Truly Meet) Icon of the Mother of God from Romania’s famous Sihstria Monastery was carried in procession, with the monks entreating God for relief from the coronavirus pandemic and drought.  The procession took place after the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, with the monks stopping at six points to offer prayers and litanies for the driving away of the pandemic, the healing of the sick, and for rain. The procession began and ended at the monastery cathedral, with stops at the cemetery, the agricultural fields, the cell of the greatly-revered Elder Cleopa (Ilie), the guesthouse, and the old church. The holy march was held, “To ask for God’s help and the mercy of the Mother of God in order to get through these difficult times, to get out of this state of sorrow, to pray more together, and to get out of the monotony of the present situation through a more intense prayer, with more hope,” explained the abbot, Archimandrite Arsenie Popa. The Sihstria Axion Estin Icon was painted by a Romanian monk on Mt. Athos in the early 20th century. It is normally housed in the nave of the old church at the monastery. Elder Cleopa was witness to a number of miracles worked by the Mother of God through her precious icon. Code for blog Since you are here… …we do have a small request. Memory Eternal to Fr. Arsenie (Papocioc) Fr. Arsenie (Papocioc). On July 19, 2011, the renowned spiritual father of Romania, reposed in the Lord. His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church gave the eulogy at the funeral of Archimandrite Arsenie (Papacioc), at the Saint Mary Monastery in Techirghiol, Romania on Thursday, 21 July 2011. His eulogy appeared on the website of the Romanian Patriarchate, Basilica.ro: It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing away of Rev. Archimandrite Arsenie (Papacioc), one of the great father confessors of the Romanian people. A symbol of Romanian monasticism of the late twentieth, early twenty-first centuries, Fr. Arsenie (Papacioc) was a great counselor through his exemplary life, and through his profitable teachings, delivered with much warmth and love for his many spiritual children, as well as for the crowds of pilgrims who came to his cell to receive his blessings. He was a living witness of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in our righteous Church. Born on the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God in 1914, in Misleanu village, Periei commune, county of Ialomia, Fr. Arsenie, baptized Anghel, was the seventh child of his well to do and merciful parents, Vasile and Stanca. He so honored the Protectress of his birth in this world that he dedicated his whole life to the Holy Birth Giver of God, and to the Church of Jesus Christ our Lord. Having felt a true vocation for the monastic life, he spent his apprenticeship first at Cozia Monastery, and then he became a monk at Antim Monastery of Bucharest under the supervision of fathers Petroniu Tnase, Benedict Ghiu and Sofian Boghiu. He completed his spiritual formation in Moldova, at Sihstria, Neam and Slatina Monasteries. During the difficult times of atheist communism, Rev. Arsenie continued the spiritual work of father Cleopa Ilie from Slatina Monastery, having been a living stone at the Spiritual Academy that operated for a time at the place of worship founded by prince Alexandru Lpueanu of Moldova, together with Hieromonks Paisie Olaru, Antonie Plmdeal, Andrei Scrima, Petroniu Tnase, Daniil Sandu Tudor and others.

Tweet Нравится Archimandrite Cleopa (Ilie). King Manasseh " s Repentance Archmimadrite Cleopa (Ilie) Archimandrite Cleopa (Ilie: 1912-1998) is widely known as an elder, a great confessor of Romanian monks and a spiritual father to thousands of laypeople who flocked to him, seeking spiritual help. Below is an extract from his book, Value of the Soul , which was published in Russian by the publishing house of Moscow Sretensky Monastery.      Manasseh, King of Judah in the Old Testament, committed perhaps more sins against God than anybody else. Over fifty-two years he forced his people to worship idols and demons, ordering the Jews to abandon their faith in true God. So Manasseh apostatized himself together with his children and the whole family. More than that, the king brutally subjected to torture and put to death all those who refused to worship idols and offer sacrifices to demons. This king committed so many sins that it is even beyond expression. But the Most Holy God, wishing to demonstrate the depth of His mercy and the boundless compassion towards people, in His providence led Manasseh to repentance. How did it come to pass? Although this king was very bad, he was descended from a good family. His father, King Hezekiah , who was a contemporary of the Holy Prophet Isaiah, pleased the Lord (see 2 Kings 18:20). I believe it was King Hezekiah that interceded to the Almighty for his son who had drifted away from the Creator of heaven and earth. So how did God convert Manasseh? This is how the story goes. Seeing Manasseh’s spite and unbelief, coupled with the aberration of his mind (for not only was he an apostate himself, but he even plunged his people into perdition, forcing them to deny God), the Almighty, Who knows how to lead every single person to repentance, put a bridle on him and tightened the reins, as is said in the Psalter: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee (Ps. 32:9). This is precisely what happened to this king. For if God had left him alone, Manasseh would have never repented himself. But wherefore the Lord brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, which took Manasseh among the thorns, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon (see 2 Chron. 33:11). So they tied him up and threw into a tiny cage where he even could not straighten up. His head was shackled to his feet with two bronze chains. He was thrown into that cage where he could not even slightly raise his head, lying motionless all the time, coiled up.
