Under the influence of the pluri-cultural, post-modern, post-Christian society of the day, the pure gold of the Christian faith, that made Christmas possible in the first place, has being mixed with a myriad of pagan, esoterical and secular influences that have perverted the core of the incarnation of God celebration. Fr. Vasile Tudora 01 December 2009 From time to time even a benign shopping session at Walmart can give you insight on the status of our society today. The other night, as part of pre-Christmas preparation, I was looking for a copy of the recent Hollywood movie “The Nativity story”. After scouting for a while with no avail in the helter-skelter of the multi-media proposals, I noticed something that I sought would relief me from my fruitless search: a Christmas movies stand! Glazing with joy I instantly told myself: were would the Nativity story movie be better placed but there? So with all my hopes up I eagerly approached the booth of my “salvation” and started browsing through the colorful covers.

Where Should We Ascend? If one read the four Gospels as if they were four separate biographies of Jesus, one might be forgiven for thinking that the Ascension narrated the end of the story.  We have read narratives of Christ’s birth, His baptism, His temptation in the wilderness, His ministry, His crucifixion, His resurrection, and now at the last we come the narrative of His ascension, concluding the story of His life with a heavenly happy ending.  Everyone loves a happy ending, and this one rounds out the story of Jesus by saying in effect, “And He lived happily ever after at the right hand of God.”  In this way of thinking, the story is not finished without the Ascension.

If the Christmas story has a villain, it would be King Herod.  In the passion story, the main villain would be Judas Iscariot, with possibly the High Priest Caiaphas and his Sanhedrin running a close second.  But there is no close second in the Christmas story when it comes to villains.  Herod has the field all to himself. Even children seem to recognize this.  In the Christmas classic, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson, the Herdman family first comes to hear the Christmas story when they force their way into the main roles at the local church Christmas pageant.  To describe the Herdmans as “secular” would be an understatement.  They were such barbarians that they made Attila the Hun look like a civilized Oxford don.  But their sense of justice and fair play remained intact.  And when they heard what Herod tried to do to the Baby Jesus and how nothing much ever happened to him by way of divine retribution, they were indignant.  So indignant that they wanted to hang him or burn him alive.  Even the Herdmans knew that Herod was a villain.

The Entrance is a special day for Russia. The Monastery of the Entrance and the Optina Elders went down in history like none other in the collective service of eldership. Eldership means the guidance of people to salvation. This is no coincidence, for what is the Entrance? The Entrance is the entry of the Most Holy Theotokos. At the age of three she was led into the Temple – this was of very great significance – so that she might prepare herself very well indeed for that great service to which the Lord had called her.

Jesus Is the Sole Mediator Between Us and the Father Salvation is of the Body: The Intercession of the Saints At the collapse of the Roman empire, Germanic tribes began to assault Hispania (modern day Spain and Portugal). This eventually led to the Visigoths conquering the majority of the Iberian peninsula. This was devastating to the Orthodox natives as the Visigoth rulers were strict Arians. The difference between these two classes led to the persecution of the Orthodox and instances of rebellion against the Visigothic rulers. The link between the Byzantine empire and the Orthodox in the Iberian peninsula did not help their status in the eyes of their Arian rulers.

I’ve also heard, “I’m not doing so well.” These are timely updates, personal measures and reports on the state of spiritual lives. And they are wrong. You are not doing better. You are not doing worse. Fr. Stephen Freeman In truth, we don’t know how we’re doing. Only God knows. But we have internalized a cultural narrative and made it the story of our soul. That narrative is the story of progress (or decline). It is the story that the modern world tells itself and the story by which it frequently justifies its actions. In the name of progress we have “paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”
