В.В. Симонов Summary The proposed Manual for the first time in Russian scientific and educational literature sets out a common history of Christianity, which is considered from the point of view of the historical dynamics of Church organizational and doctrinal unity. The general logic of the material exposure is determined by issues that seem to authors fundamental for specific historical periods: «What (vol. l, pt. 1), how (vol. 1, pt. 2), and where (vol. 2, pt. 1) to believe in order to be saved – or does it even need to believe? (vol. 2, pt. 2)». Volume 1 of the Manual covers the period from the foundation of the Church to the formation of the prerequisites of the Protestant Reformation – the time of sharp doctrinal discussions that had significant implications on the organizational structure of the institutional Christian Church. Part 2 of this volume in a broad historical context highlights the issues related to the development of Church orthodoxy and the formation of various deviations from it. Throughout the millennium considered dogmatic differences introduce an element of instability in the universalist claim of Christianity, which in the organizational field brought to many Church divisions on confessional lines. The main question of the period: «How to believe in order to be saved?» IV-VI centuries was the time when Christianity had moved from position of persecuted by all «forbidden» religion to position of an equal initially, and thenthe state religion of the Roman Empire. Paganism was finally disappearing. It was the time of significant changes in the organizational structure of the Christian Church, based on the principle of hierarchy: strengthening of the system of territorial administration with sole episcopal governing of dioceses with the recognition of the leading role of Church Councils (Ecumenical and Local) as the top collegiate Church government institutions. At the same time the unity of the Church doctrine and organizational structure was threatened by early heresies – i.e. deviations from the general Church doctrine, touched the very Christian faith (Donatism, Arianism). Direct threat to the organizational unity of the Church represented the teachings of the Alexandrian presbyter Arius on μοια – subordination of God the Son to God the Father, on which basis appeared some influential Church groups opposed to the bishops, who professed and developed the «orthodox» doctrine, consecrated by Church tradition. Later, in V-VI cent., the main issues of concern to the Church were questions about the connection of the divine and the human in the hypostasis of God the Son, and, respectively, on the content of the incarnation of the Logos (Word of God).

" For the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many, " (Mark 10:45; cf. Matt. 20:28.) This was the new principle, hitherto unknown to human society, which was the basis of the Church " s life. Fr N. Afanassieff 18 January 2010 Source: All Saints of Alaska Orthodox Church    As the title of this article shows, it confines itself to the ministry of the laity within the Church; it does not deal with the very varied forms of lay ministry outside the Church. I recognize the disadvantages involved in restricting my subject in this way, but in my view the ministry of the laity within the Church is much more important than their ministry outside it, because the latter is to a large extent determined by the former. Moreover, the question of the ministry of the laity outside the Church is not a complicated problem for the Orthodox conscience. The Orthodox Church has always accepted and fully approved the principle of the laity undertaking missionary work, education, scientific and social work. Most of the time the Orthodox Church left the laity almost complete freedom in this field of their activity, merely insisting on a minimum of supervision from the ecclesiastical hierarchy.

Eucharist, Bishop, Church: The Unity of the Church in the Divine Eucharist and the Bishop During the First Three Centuries Источник Preface Although this work is historical in its method and content, it is not a product of historical curiosity. At a time when church unity occupies an increasingly central place in theological study, the contribution of our theology is required not simply as an academic demand, but also a fundamental debt owed to the Church. In order to fulfill the demand and pay the debt, our theology can no longer fall back on the sources of its own confessional riches. The gradual abandonment of the confessional mentality of past generations and the recognition of the need for our theology to be an expression not of one confession but of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church herself, now directs the course of theological study towards the sources of the ancient undivided Church. A Church which, in spite of all the disputes and conflicts by which she was often shaken, was always well aware of what is meant by the catholic consciousness of the Church. This holds true, most especially for the study of the unity of the Church which aims to provide our divided Christian world with that supra-confessional thread which will help it to rediscover and actualize its unity through the midst of its various divisions. For those coming from the Orthodox tradition, a reliable method of turning towards the sources of the ancient undivided Church is through study of the liturgical life of our Church. The reproach leveled at our Church that she has remained through the centuries a “community of worship” today, proves to be the best guarantee of a sure route back to the consciousness of the ancient undivided Church. For the liturgical life of our Church which is characterized by its conservatism and traditional character has not succumbed to overloading with non-essential later elements, but continues to reflect in a changing contemporary world the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church of every age, worshipping in one body.

Priest Ernesto Obregon 22 April 2015 A Roman Catholic Priest, an Eastern Orthodox Priest, a Protestant Pastor, and two Jewish Rabbis were blessing weapons. Does that sound like the beginning of a joke? But, see the images above for an example of each of them. But, wait, OK, I will tell you one joke. I do not know from where it comes. The two thousand member church was filled to overflowing capacity one Sunday morning. The preacher was ready to start the sermon when two men, dressed in long black coats and black hats entered thru the rear of the church. One of the two men walked to the middle of the church while the other stayed at the back of the church. They both then reached under their coats and withdrew automatic weapons. The one in the middle announced, “Everyone willing to take a bullet for Jesus stay in your seats!” Naturally, the pews emptied, followed by the choir. The deacons ran out the door, followed by the choir director and the assistant pastor. After a few moments, there were about twenty people left sitting in the church. The preacher was holding steady in the pulpit. The men put their weapons away and said, gently, to the preacher, “All right, pastor, the hypocrites are gone now. You may begin the service.”

To be in the Church, we must live the life of the Church—with its fasts and feasts, its services and sacraments—all has been established for our benefit. Every time we disobey the Church, every time we choose not to attend a service, every time we give up the fast to please the demands of our bellies—we continue to cut the very fabric that connects us to the Church. To be God’s children, we must become part of God’s family. Priest Sergei Sveshnikov 07 March 2009 On the first Sunday of Great Lent we celebrate the Triumph of Orthodoxy, a feast that was established in the year 842 to mark the final defeat of the Iconoclast heresy.  In issuing a decree to celebrate the Sunday of Orthodoxy, the Synod of Constantinople wished to specifically commit the restoration of holy icons and the triumph of Orthodox Christology to the memory of the Church.  During the eleven centuries that have followed since that day, the feast has come to be celebrated as the triumph of Orthodoxy over all heresies that have troubled the Church.  Within the solemn proclamation of the Anathema which is heard on this day in every Orthodox cathedral, the Church in its fullness confirms the faith of the Fathers and rejects all heresies of the past and present.  But the meaning of this feast is not in the rejection of false teaching from our midst, but in the true triumph of Orthodoxy in our hearts.

The Communication Service of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations is authorized to make the following statement in this regard: A Time of Decision for Members of the Church of England The Russian Orthodox Church has been alarmed and disappointed to learn about the decision of the Church of England to admit women to the episcopate, since the centuries-old relationships between our two Churches had shown possibilities for the Orthodox to recognize the existence of apostolic succession in Anglicanism. As far back as the 19th century, the Anglicans, members of the Eastern Church Association, sought “mutual recognition” of orders between the Orthodox and the Anglican Churches and believed that “both Churches preserved the apostolic continuity and true faith in the Saviour and should accept each other in the full communion of prayers and sacraments.”
