Metropolitan George (Khodr) of Mount Lebanon 15 April 2015 Running After Righteousness Pascha means passage. The Pascha of the Jews is their passage from Egypt, the land of slavery, to the Promised Land. Christian Pascha is people’s passage from sin to righteousness through the death and resurrection of Christ. That is, through your faith in this death and its efficacy. In our liturgical life, we do not make a distinction between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. It is three mutually-completing parts. You transcend the duality between Christ’s death and resurrection in the services because you do not recall the death and linger there. You constantly leap from the Savior’s crucifixion to his resurrection. It is worth pointing out that if Eastern Christians mention the death of the Teacher in prayer, they immediately speak of the resurrection. Hear the tones and words of the resurrection in the prayer of Good Friday.

The death that we accept at baptism is not symbolic at all; it is as real as the life that we accept. Priest Sergei Sveshnikov 23 July 2015 Photo: http://kistine.my1.ru/ Does It Matter to God Whether I Am Baptized Or Not? Infant Baptism in the Orthodox Church “You baptize babies?” Nowadays, children get baptized for any number of reasons: because their family is Russian (Ukrainian/Greek/Serbian, etc.), because it is what they have “always done,” because the grandmother insists, because the parents want the child to be able to take communion or to go to Sunday school, or for any number of other reasons. But the Apostle Paul says that baptism is a manifestation of Christ’s death in our lives (Rom. 6:3)–no, no, not a symbol of His death, not a theatrical re-enactment, not a remembrance, but the “making-real,” the “making-present” of His death. Paul says that the baptized “put on Christ” (Gal. 3:27)–but what kind of Christ? The one who was tortured. The One who was crucified. The One who died. The One whose wounds did not heal even in His glorious resurrection (Luke 24:39).

I am like this because “Christ is Risen.” These words breathe joy and eternity. Here is the name of God and the life of mankind. During Paschal days, we feel the energy of the resurrection – “the death of death and the destruction of hell.” We received healing from the tomb of Christ, like from an operating room. An experienced Surgeon has carved death from the nature of humanity. The fresh water of life has become an expensive wine, the tasteless tea is soaked with the sweetness of the sugar of the Resurrection.

Are there not graves beside Christian churches as well? How can we say that " there is none dead in the tomb " , that Christ has conquered death by death? Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh 16 April 2015 Pascha in the West and the East The Event of the Resurrection and Our Resurrection In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Every Sunday throughout the year, century after century, the Orthodox Church proclaims the Resurrection of Christ. Each Sunday we relive once again our joy that Christ is risen. And that joy is so deep, so profound, that it bears witness of itself: we rejoice not only because the Lord is risen, but because his Resurrection is for us the beginning of new, renewed life. In the Sermon of John Chrysostom which is read on the night of Christ’s Resurrection each year, it is said that ‘Christ is risen, and there is none dead in the tomb…’ And we ourselves continue to pass on this message from one century to the next. Yet is it true? Do we not see that death continues to reap its harvest around us? Are there not graves beside Christian churches as well? How can we say that ‘there is none dead in the tomb’, that Christ has conquered death by death?

The sixth week of Great Lent is the countdown week to the resurrection of Lazarus.  The resurrection of Lazarus is a pivotal point in Jesus’s ministry in at least two ways.  First, in raising Lazarus who had been dead four days, Jesus manifests to all his absolute power over death.  The hymns of the Church tell us that this final manifestation of His power was particularly for the purpose of making clear to His disciples that his own death was voluntary.  Having complete power over death, Jesus gives His life, no one takes it from Him.  In St. John’s Gospel, this is further reinforced by the soldiers falling down when Jesus speaks to them when they come to arrest Him–falling down twice.
