Concelebrating with the archpastor were clerics of the church. During the Litany of Fervent Supplication, prayerful petitions were offered for the deliverance from the coronavirus infection. After the Litany of Fervent Supplication, Metropolitan Hilarion lifted up the prayer which is read at a time of harmful pestilence. After the Liturgy, the prayer service of the Veneration of the Cross was conducted. It was followed by a homily, in which the archpastor said: “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. “Dear Fathers, dear brothers and sisters, “Today we are celebrating the feast of the Elevation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. This feast was set in honour of the events that had occurred in the 4th century when, by a decision of Emperor Constantine the Great, the city of Jerusalem had been turned into the largest Christian pilgrimage centre. “Prior to that, on the site of the ancient Jerusalem destroyed by the Romans, for three centuries there existed a city called Aelia Capitolina. It was a pagan city with no landmarks which could remind people about the Lord Jesus Christ, His disciples or the ancient Kingdom of Israel. But when Christianity, thanks to Emperor Constantine, Equal-to-the-Apostles, came out of the catacombs and received the actual status of the Roman Empire’s official religion, people remembered about both the Christian shrines and the holy city of Jerusalem.

Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology Faculty Statement on the Holy and Great Council Source: Orthodox Christian Network The Faculty of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology fully supports the coming Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church to be held at the Orthodox Academy on Crete June 16-27, 2016.  The Faculty affirms the importance of this Council for the life and witness of the Orthodox Church in today’s world. His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew deserves much appreciation and gratitude for his selfless and faithful devotion to the cause of Orthodox unity and Orthodox witness to the Lord and His Gospel. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has acted wisely and judiciously to strengthen the bond of unity and to deepen conciliarity among the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches.  He has exercised his own responsibility as the first bishop of the Orthodox Church while not intruding upon the proper responsibilities of other primates or the integrity of the other Autocephalous Churches. In consultation with other primates, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has led the Orthodox Church in addressing common challenges and in giving a united witness to Christ and His saving Gospel. More than fifty years ago, Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras (+1972) envisioned a Council which would bring together representatives from all the Orthodox Churches to strengthen the bonds of unity and to address critical issues facing the Church. He realized that the conciliar tradition had been diminished. He saw that the tragic events and political changes of the 19 th century and  the early decades of the 20 th century contributed to isolation and divisiveness among the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches. The first step in this conciliar process was Patriarch Athenagoras’ decision to convene four Pan-Orthodox Conferences between 1961 and 1968.  At these meetings, the participants began to identify topics of church life which deserved discussion and common agreement. They began to respond together to the new challenges of dialogue with other churches and confessions. These discussions continued through the 1970s and 1980s.  Orthodox bishops and theologians from  the Autocephalous Churches actively participated in these meetings.  Eventually, they agreed  upon ten topics to be thoroughly studied in anticipation of a Holy and Great Council.

Tweet Нравится Church of England refuses to recognize same-sex marriage Moscow, January 31, 2017      Following a two-year discussion on the matter, bishops of the Church of England have announced that they will not accept gay marriage, defending instead that marriage is the union of one man and one woman, reports The Guardian . The bishops’ report comes after two years of intense internal debate and reflection involving clergy and laity and decades of factional feuding within the church. “Gay rights” crusaders within the Church of England are infuriated, condemning the bishops’ report. Bishop Graham James of Norwich stated that the church should not “adapt its doctrine to the fashions of any particular time,” presenting the bishops’ report at a press conference. However, church law should give “maximum freedom” to gay couples, giving clergy some leeway in certain cases, the report also states. The bishops have stressed that this report is to be accepted as part of an on-going process, rather than an attempt at a final answer on the matter. The Church of England is a widely-varying mix of liberal and conservative Christians, with a wide range of views on a wide range of matters. The church’s gay campaigners have termed the report “cruel” and a “utter failure,” predicting it will lead to increased clerical disobedience on the matter, which the hierarchy admits is already happening to some degree. 31 января 2017 г. City cross procession for peace takes place in Sievierodonetsk Sievierodonetsk (Ukraine), May 27, 2014      On May 24, the feast-day of Holy and Equal-to-the-Apostles Methodius and Cyril, Teachers of the Slavs, a city religious procession for peace took place in Sievierodonetsk. On that day, Bishop Nicodemus of Sievierodonetsk and Starobilsk headed the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of Nativity of Christ in Sievierodonetsk. A special prayer was offered up at the service for peace, overcoming of hostility and repose of those killed in the internecine war, reports the Sievierodonetsk Diocese’s website.      After the Liturgy, Akathist to the Lord for peace and mutual love among people was read. Then a city procession for peace in the motherland began, carrying a cross with a small portion of the True Life-Giving Cross, the “Tenderness” and “The three-Handed” Icons of the Holy Theotokos, a wonder-working Icon of St. Nicolas the Wonder-Worker and other shrines of the city’s churches. It proceeded from the Cathedral of Nativity of Christ, along the Kosmonavtov Street, the Gvardeiskiy Avenue, the Donetskaya and Energetikov Streets to the Church of the “Tenderness” Icon of the Mother of God.      At the end of the procession Bishop Nicodemus addressed all the faithful with an edifying word: “In this time, difficult for each of us, we have celebrated the Divine Liturgy and held a cross procession for peace in our motherland with the Lord’s blessing… “All adversities befall us because we forget the Lord’s commandment about love. So, if we had more love in our hearts, then they would simply have no space for hatred, anger and other sins and vices…”      The hierarch also noted the significance of cross processions:      “Cross procession is an ancient pious tradition. However, not all people know their meaning. A cross procession is a solemn prayer procession, hence its name. A cross procession is an expression of the people’s one faith and zealous prayer to the Lord, the Mother of God and the saints for divine aid to the Church and people.

45 Priests who Followed Bishop into Schism Have Already Returned to Ukrainian Church Source: OrthoChristian Photo: foma.ru Vinnitsa, Ukraine, December 19, 2018 More than half the priests of the Diocese of Vinnitsa of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church who followed their hierarch Simeon Shostasky, the former Metropolitan of Vinnitsa and Bar,  into schism  in the new Ukrainian nationalist church following Saturday’s “unification council” have already repented of their poor decision and returned to the canonical Ukrainian Church headed by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine. As a representative from the Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods of Ukraine explains, after Simeon announced his transition to the new church created by the Patriarchate of Constantinople, 75 of the diocese’s 250 priests initially decided to follow him into schism, reports the online journal  Foma , with reference to  Interfax-Religion As OrthoChristian  previously reported , in Vinnitsa itself, neither the authoritative deans and priests supported him, nor the ancient Holy Trinity Brailovsky Convent and other monasteries. Half of the people in the Transfiguration Cathedral left in protest after Sunday’s service as Simeon announced his defection. “However, there was a meeting of the clergy of the diocese on Tuesday at the Elevation of the Life-giving Cross Cathedral in Vinnitsa with the newly-appointed hierarch—Archbishop Barsanuphius, after which 45 of the ‘departing’ clerics said that they would remain in the canonical Church,” the Brotherhoods representative said. View two videos of the gathered clergy and faithful greeting their new hierarch  here . As the source explained, the meeting was held at the Holy Cross Cathedral because the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral in Vinnitsa is still in the hands of former Metropolitan Simeon and his supporters. Several young men seized the keys to the church from the security guard on Saturday morning in preparation for Simeon’s participation in the “unification council” and his departure from the Church of Christ.

2010 Epistle from the Ecumenical Patriarch for the (New Calendar) Nativity of Christ BARTHOLOMEW By the Mercy of God Archbishop of Constantinople-New Rome  and Ecumenical Patriarch  To the Plenitude of the Church  Grace, Peace and Mercy from the Savior Christ Born in Bethlehem Beloved brother concelebrants and blessed children in the Lord, Within the somber atmosphere that recently prevails throughout the world with the diverse affliction of the financial, social, moral and especially spiritual crisis, which has created increasing frustration, bitterness, confusion, anxiety, disappointment and fear among many people with regard to the future, the voice of the Church sounds sweet: Come, O faithful, let us raise our minds to things divine and behold the heavenly condescension that has appeared to us from above in Bethlehem … (Hymn from the 6th Hour, Christmas) The unshakeable belief of Christians is that God does not simply or indifferently observe from above the journey of humanity, which He has personally created according to His image and likeness. This is why the incarnation of His only-begotten Son and Word was from the very beginning His “good will,” His original intention. His “pre-eternal will” was precisely to assume in His person, in an act of extreme love, the human nature that He created in order to render it “a participant of divine nature.” (2 Peter 1.4) Indeed, God willed this prior to the “fall” of Adam and Eve, even before their very creation! Following the “fall” of Adam and Eve, the “pre-eternal will” of the Incarnation embraced the Cross, the Sacred Passion, the Life-giving Death, the Descent into Hades, and the Resurrection after three days. In this way, the sin that infiltrated human nature thereby infecting everything and the death that surreptitiously penetrated life were completely and definitively dispelled, while humanity was able to enjoy the fullness of the Paternal and eternal heritage. However, the divine condescension of Christmas is not restricted to things related to eternity. It also includes things related to our earthly journey. Christ came into the world in order to spread the good news of the Kingdom of Heaven and to initiate us into this Kingdom. Yet, He also came in order to help and heal human weakness. He miraculously and repeatedly fed the multitudes who listened to His word; He cleansed lepers; He supported paralytics; He granted light to the blind, hearing to the deaf and speech to the dumb; He delivered the demonized of impure spirits, resurrected the dead, supported the rights of the oppressed and abandoned; He condemned illegal wealth, heartlessness to the poor, hypocrisy and “hubris” in human relations; He offered Himself as an example of voluntary self-emptying sacrifice for the sake of others!

The meeting, which took place online due to the COVID-19 Pandemic on October 6-7, was the first since the transition of the chairmanship to Archbishop Elpidophoros. Photo: antiochian.org We, the Members of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America, gathering for our first digital meeting on October 6-7, 2020, offer the perennial message of Christian hope and spiritual encouragement to our clergy and faithful, and all persons of good will, in these unprecedented times of the current global health crisis, political division, and social strife. The Coronavirus pandemic has affected every human being in the world with some form of trauma: loss of life, debilitating illness, separation from loved ones, financial hardship, or emotional fatigue. And yet, it remains true that through the Cross joy has come into all the world. Through these tragedies, health care workers who have sacrificially cared for the sick, parents who have had to manage every aspect of their children’s education and care from home, those who are without employment and those who are facing financial struggles, and clergy who have maintained the spiritual and liturgical lives of their parishes—all bear witness to the power of love and goodwill to provide solace in these troubled days. At the same time, this health crisis and the energy required to shoulder it have also given rise to an unhealthy increase of polemical opinion related to questions of science, medicine, and civil and ecclesiastical directives. As often happens when human passions erupt, such polemics have infected other areas of society as reflected in the rise in this country of racial tensions, ideological clashes, and political polarization. We remind all that, as Orthodox Christians sojourning in this land, we are not called to base our lives upon the ephemeral convictions that are common in the realm of politics, economics, or ideology. Rather, we are called to “set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Col. 3:2), placing our trust in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and doing His Holy Will through our efforts to fulfill His life-giving commandments.

Tweet Нравится Priest Feodor Konyukhov to place cross at bottom of Mariana Trench Moscow, January 24, 2017 Photo: http://ria.ru/      Famous priest, traveler, and adventurer Fr. Feodor Konyukhov intends to plumb the depths of the Pacific Ocean, becoming the first to reach the very deepest point of the Mariana Trench, and place there a Russian flag and stone Orthodox cross. Konyukhov, who has had countless adventures across the continents, oceans, and through the sky, will set out on this latest endeavor with polar explorer Artur Chilingarov, reports RIA-Novosti . On Monday, stone mason Vladimir Mikhailov gave the limestone cross to Fr. Feodor. Exactly fifty years prior the first ever dive to the bottom of the Mariana trench was made by the crew of the “Trieste” on January 23, 1960, a distance of approximately 10.9 kilometers (6.77 miles), with a similar submersion by the Deep Sea Challenger in 2012. Konyukhov noted that previous expeditions have reached this depth of 10,900 meters, but there remains unexplored a very narrow trench of 11,025 meters (6.85 miles) depth. “Artur Nikolaevich (Chilingarov) and I will plunge into the Mariana Trench. He will be placing a flag of the Russian Federation there, and I, as an Orthodox priest, will place a cross,” said Fr. Feodor. The date of the expedition is currently undefined, as their two-person submarine, in which the pair intends to spend a few days in the deepest of trenches, is not yet built. Meanwhile, the 1/2 meter by 1 meter cross, made from ancient limestone, was completed after three months of work. In May, Vladimir Mikhailov also gave Fr. Feodor a priest’s cross with which he orbited the earth in a hot air balloon. 24 января 2017 г.
