XIV в.

Cookie policy Peacemaking Mission of Religion in the Modern World Address by the DECR chairman Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk at the 3d meeting of the Russian Orthodox Church and Turkey’s Presidency for Religious Affairs working group . Distinguished Participants in the meeting: I am glad to welcome to Moscow the members of the Russian Orthodox Church and Turkey’s Presidency for Religious Affairs working group. I would like to convey to all the participants a message of greetings from His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, who is out of the city at present. The dialogue between our religious communities, which has been developing for over five years now, has, in my view, a great potential. Our countries are situated on the border between West and East; we have accumulated a considerable experience of internal and external peacemaking. At present the peoples of Russia and Turkey are living through a renaissance of religious life, and an exchange of opinions and peace work will be very useful for us. As His Holiness Patriarch Kirill stressed during his meeting with the head of the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs Mr. Mehmet Görmez in December 2014, ‘it is very important for us to think together over what is happening to the human civilization… Religious values have almost disappeared from the public space. Laws are adopted running contrary to God’s commandments and traditional morality… We should respond to what does not correspond with our religious convictions’. Today’s meeting shows that our nations have a mutual desire for and interest in cooperation. This time our talks are devoted to the topic of conflicts and ways of the co-work of religious organization in overcoming them. For Russia and Turkey, it is a problem of special relevance. The relations between our countries have gone through various stages, but today we together are facing the treat of extremism and terrorism. This phenomenon clothed in various forms has directly affected the peoples of Russia and Turkey. Each time we have grieved over reports of terror action committed in Turkey resulting in the death of innocent people. Our hearts echoed with special pain when the Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was assassinated in a terrorist’s attack unprecedented in its insolence and meanness.

The four sessions, with 24 speakers, devoted to the work of one of the most renowned Orthodox Christian theologians of the last century, attracted the attention of nearly one hundred participants. The conference, titled  " The Legacy of Fr. John Meyendorff, Scholar and Churchman (1926 – 1992), ” began with words of welcome by the Rector of the Institute, His Eminence Archbishop Gabriel, and by the Dean, Archpriest Nicholas Cernokrak. His Eminence Kallistos, metropolitan of Diokleia, transmitted a message from the Ecumenical Patriarch, His Holiness Bartholomew. Then Dr. Joost van Rossum, professor of History and Theology of the Byzantine Church at the Institute (and alumnus of St. Vladimir " s Seminary) delivered the keynote lecture, entitled “ Fr. John Meyendorff: A Life Dedicated to Scholarship and to the Church. ” Fr. Meyendorff was first of all known for his studies on the Byzantine theologian St. Gregory Palamas (14th century), whose theology can be considered as a true patristic synthesis. For this reason, the initial lectures were dedicated to the notion of “ neo-patristic synthesis, ” which had been introduced for the first time by Fr. Georges Florovsky, and which had been resumed by Fr. John. The initial lectures included: Metropolitan Kallistos Ware, “ Father John Meyendorff and ‘ Neo-Patristic Synthesis ’ ”   ; Fr. Nikolaos Loudovikos, “ John Meyendorff and the Possibilities of a Modern Patristic Exegesis ” ; Dr. Ivana Noble, “ Patristic Synthesis or Non-Synthetic Dialectics? A Critical Evaluation of John Meyendorff " s Contribution. "

Address by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate (International Hellenic University online seminar, 16th February 2021). Your Eminence and Your Graces, All-honourable fathers, brothers and sisters, I wholeheartedly greet all of you, the organisers and participants of the inter-Orthodox online seminar held under the aegis of the International Hellenic University. Before getting down to my address I would like to thank the University’s leadership for inviting me to speak at the seminar. In its essential aspects my paper raises the most important topics of human life, such as values, individual liberty, rights, moral choice and ensuing responsibility for its consequences. Inasmuch as the contemporary society has different ways to conceptualize and interpret these fundamental categories, in my address I would like to present the views of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia on the nature of human rights and freedoms in their relation to responsibility, moral choice and dignity. Over the years of his church ministry, His Holiness has systematically explored these issues in his homilies, speeches, lectures and written works. The majority of those who constitute the Russian Orthodox Church’s flock have historically lived in Europe and belong to the European civilisation. Therefore, as the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church His Holiness Patriarch Kirill devotes particular attention to the human rights issues, as well as to the value system in the modern-day European society and in the social, legal and philosophical thought.
