Gabriel (Bunge) admin 14 November 2012 The following conversation with Schema-Archimandrite Gabriel (Bunge), the renowned patristics scholar from the Skete of the Holy Cross in Switzerland, was held during his visit to Moscow in early November 2012  Fr. Gabriel, what for you is the most valuable thing in communication with another person? That depends on the depth of the communication. To speak in general terms, it is wonderful when people are able to find a common language with one another. If we are to speak of other aspects of communication, then the most valuable thing is when you can find the image of God in another person. We were all created in God’s image; in the absolute sense, this image is Christ. If we can find this image in another person, then this becomes the most valuable thing there can be in communication; this is also the basis of true friendship. That is, not just some kind of natural human sympathy, but the recognition of another as being in the image of God.

The beginning of ode 7 of the Great Canon is absolutely right about this: ‘We have sinned, we have transgressed, we have done evil in your sight; we have not kept or followed what you directed us to do’. It’s a fact that, on an everyday basis, we sin in our thoughts and deeds. We’re all too easily ensnared in the nets of the spiteful, evil one. We all become transgressors against God’s commandments. One person by committing this sin, another person by committing a different one. One more so, another less. One engaging in more serious sins, another in less serious ones. One out of ignorance, another by enticement and a third out of bad habit.

Fasting, the Door to Spiritual Treasure Fasting has been around since time immemorial.  Fasting is a way to sharpen awareness and increase anticipation.  Most developed religions use fasting as a means to prepare for rituals or feasts.  “No fast, no feast” is the old motto.  If you don’t prepare for Easter or Christmas by exercising some restraint and all you do is gorge yourself on foods you’re eating anyway, what’s the gain?

Multimedia Contact us Искать Искать Risking Everything Our American way of life has tended to mold the local church into the local religion store. It offers various programs and activities that keep everyone involved and even maximizing the “ministries” of its members. But it can also simply be a beehive of activity, none or little of which has much to do with the healing of the soul. Archpriest Stephen Freeman 12 October 2011 In the struggle to come to the wholeness of Personhood – to become the “true self” rather than to sink into the “false self” our very existence as spiritual beings is at stake If you read across Orthodox books that center on the issue of Personhood – a common theme becomes visible. Our fall and our brokenness leave us vulnerable, even in our religious efforts, to the development of a “false self” something quite other than the wholeness of true Personhood. Indeed, religion might be more than just a little vulnerable to this – it may be one of the best ways to pursue a false mode of existence. It should be quickly added that most of our activities contribute to this false self – for it is simply another way in which our sinfulness manifests itself. The movement from false to true self is another way of describing the work of salvation that is wrought in us through grace.

(Very Scary!) Halloween and the Orthodox Family Saint Paisios of Mt. Athos walked his occult-dabbling guest down the path leading away from his cell. Suddenly a bush nearby began to shake violently. There was no wind or other physical cause; the bush was being shaken by a demon. “Don’t be afraid of him,” Saint Paisios assured his guest, “that’s all he can do.” In Africa, Elder Cosmas, Apostle to Zaire, was called to the police station to give advice on the handling of a witch who had flown into the region on a broom that used the blood of infants as fuel. In his many encounters with voodoo and demonic influences, one thing was consistent: The demons and witch-doctors had no power in his presence.
