| Идеалом языческой интеллигенции была «пайдейя» (лат. humanitas), опирающаяся на интеллект человека и уповающая на естественные человеческие силы. Лосев , «человек и космос, происшедшие из бездны единого, ответственны сами за себя и только на самих себя могут надеяться» ( А. Ф. Лосев , Бытие – имя – космос. М. 1993, с. 304). Наоборот, христиане уповали на волю Божию и «взыскивали» Промысел Божий. Безнадежному циклизму античной культуры с его трагическим круговращением вещей они противопоставляли ясную картину начала и конца тварного бытия, смысл которого открывался через веру. Из этих принципиально несходных мировоззренческих установок вытекали и несовместимые следствия, особенно в области учения о человеке, где языческому «человекобожию» христиане в своей «геоцентрической антропологии» противопоставляли идеал «обожения» человека, причем обожения всего человека, как «психосоматического» единства. Соответственно, в противоположных направлениях развивалась и идея бессмертия: образованная «элита» языческого мира (она составляла приблизительно 1 / 10 часть населения Римской империи) мыслила бессмертие как растворение духовного начала человека в безликой сфере божественного бытия, и мысль о воскресении во плоти представлялась ей чистым абсурдом и полнейшей нелепицей.
