A Shepherd and His Sheep: IGNATIUS IV of Syria Vincent Martini Photo: Mohammad Azakir/The Daily Star. The original, apostolic center for Gentile (“the nations”) Christian missions has lost its Chief Shepherd—and this occurring at a time when both stability and especially peace is needed for the Christians and other citizens of the Syrian nation. His Beatitude, IGNATIUS IV (Habib Hazim), Greek Orthodox Patriarch of the God-City of Antioch and All the East, reposed in our Lord on December 5, 2012. He died after complications from a stroke suffered the day before in Damascus, and was transferred to the Saint George medical facility in Beirut, Lebanon, where he ultimately expired. His Beatitude will undergo funeral and viewing services in both Lebanon (Saint Nicholas Church and Balamand Monastery) and Syria (Mariameh Cathedral), and will ultimately be laid to rest at the Patriarchal cemetery in Damascus—a city that is presently being torn apart by foreign invaders and Islamic extremists. His burial will occur on Sunday, December 9. The death of the Patriarch leaves a vacancy in the ancient See of Antioch, one of the original five patriarchates of the “Pentarchy,” which also included Jerusalem, Alexandria, Rome and Constantinople, prior to the rift between the Latin church and the churches of the east in the eleventh century and afterwards. A locum tenens will be named in the coming days, and the election of a new Patriarch—the 171st such bishop in succession from the apostle Peter, who founded the Church of Antioch—will follow, in accordance with the synodal procedures of the Church. But what stands before this next Patriarch is no less than a daunting task. Indeed, one could even go so far as to say that the next leader of Antioch will be presented with an opportunity for sainthood, should he be vigilant in overcoming the multitude of issues that face this struggling Church and nation. The chaos of the past year or so—the so-called “rebellion,” hostility from Israel and Western powers, foreign invaders and Islamic extremism—are only the most recent of tumultuous events to face both the Patriarchate of Antioch and the native Christians in Syria (over 1 million strong, at least prior to the onset of the “rebellion”).

In the Paradise of Eden, the Lord commanded Adam: “From every tree that is in the paradise you may eat for food, but from the tree for knowing good and evil, you will not eat from it. And on whichever day you eat from it, you will surely die” (Gen. 2:16-17, LXX). When Adam broke the fast — eating of the tree before he was mature enough to handle it — the consequence was corruption unto death. Through one man’s sin, death entered the world (cf. Rom. 5:12). While some fathers have speculated as to whether or not man was always intended to eventually partake of the tree, and die unto resurrection, what we know for sure is this: Adam was meant to abstain; he was meant to fast. He was meant to say “no” to his own desires, so the he could say “yes” to God. We don’t fast in order to “merit” anything from the Lord, but rather to become like God, imitating Christ in his 40-day struggle in the wilderness. And when Christ was tempted by Satan (as all those who are engaged in Christian fasting will experience), his reliance upon both prayer and the promises of God were enough to sustain him.

One of the many wonderful aspects of the Orthodox-Catholic celebration of the birth of Christ is the traditional season of " Christmastide " or the " 12 Days of Christmas. " This is one of those rare periods in the life of the Church where all fasting is suspended and where the fulness of Christ's Incarnation is on display in the following days.

The Eucharistic Liturgy in Ancient House Churches Vincent Martini Many evangelical groups today are proposing that we abandon “traditional” models of “being the Church,” and instead replace that stodginess with what is presumably a more “New Testament” model: that of the “house church” or “cell church.” Essentially, they are promoting that the local Church be a de-centralized assembly, meeting in the homes of various individuals, proportionally scattered throughout a city. The presumption is that this is the “Biblical” model for both fellowship and discipleship, being derived from the New Testament itself. While we certainly read of “house Churches” in the New Testament (e.g. 1 Cor. 1:11,16; Rom. 16:5; Col. 4:15), typically being the homes of wealthy individuals with enough room for a large assembly of people, the house/cell churches of today do not actually resemble the worship or piety associated with these New Testament prototypes. Beyond this, the house Churches of the New Testament eventually developed into the basilicas of the post-Constantine Roman empire, when the faith was no longer forced “underground” as the result of periods of sporadic, imperial persecution. The same elements present in the earlier house Churches found their way into the more established basilicas and temples of the 4th century and beyond; they were just given a newer and freer context. Two distinct features of the most ancient house churches — and in fact, of the most ancient churches that archaeology has unveiled, period — are that of the baptistry and the place of the Eucharistic sacrifice. When discussing the Eucharistic controversy at Corinth, Jerome Kodell describes a typical, first century Christian house Church: Archaeology has shown that the typical large home of the period could accomodate about fifty people for a meal, ten in the triclinium (dining room), where the guests reclined on couches, and forty in the atrium (courtyard), where the guests sat around a central pool. Jerome Kodell, The Eucharist in the New Testament , p. 75

The Road to Rome? Why Orthodoxy Deserves a Second Look Vincent Martini Vincent Martini Vincent Martini is a convert to Orthodoxy from evangelicalism. He serves as an acolyte and reader, teaches catechesis classes and has his own blog . He has an undergraduate degree in philosophy, and is currently enrolled in an Orthodox theological seminary. For those who aren’t aware, Catholic Lane is a well-maintained Roman Catholic news and resource site that I have had the pleasure of contributing to from time to time (by the gracious invitation of their staff). While there are (from an Orthodox perspective) a great number of differences between our two churches — and we are not in full communion, nor really anywhere close to it — there are still many ways in which our two worlds overlap and our distinctives and theological viewpoints merge. In such cases, I have been more than happy to collaborate with them. Recently, I noticed a series of posts by Jason Liske , outlining his reason for converting to Roman Catholicism. In one such post, he laid out a few brief reasons for why he had chosen Rome over the “Eastern Orthodox” Church. For those interested, the full post can be found here . He has also written posts in a similar manner related to Anglicanism, Lutheranism and the Reformed tradition. Before I make an effort to respond to some of Jason’s thoughts on Orthodoxy, I wanted to lay out just a few disclaimers. First, it should be noted that there are likely millions of Roman Catholics who are far more loving, charitable and honorable people than I could ever hope to be. Simply because the Church I have committed my life and faith within disagrees with them on a number of theological issues does not mean I have no positive outlook on their church or its people. Secondly, my father’s side of the family as a whole is Roman Catholic (being Italian), and while words like “schism” and “heresy” are often seen as “insults” in our present cultural context, they are not meant as such when I use them, nor should they be seen in such a light. Rather, these are words with meaning that are linked rather intimately to the Person of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and we take that subject very seriously. Every Sunday when I have the opportunity to walk (backwards, trying not to fall over myself) before the bread and chalice of the holy Eucharist during the “Great Entrance,” I always pray for my recently deceased Roman Catholic grandfather (also named Vincent) when we are making intercessions for the reposed; may his memory be eternal!
