The most widely used Bible concordance and biblical word-reference system in the world today was composed by Drew professor James Strong. It was the very room once occupied by Professor Strong, where the concordance research was done in the 1880s, that for many years was my office at Drew and coincidentally the place where this series was conceived. Today Strong " s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible rests on the shelves of most pastoral libraries in the English-speaking world over a hundred years after its first publication. Similarly the New York Times " s Arno Press has kept in print the major multivolume Drew University work of John M " Clintock 13 The theory of dynamic equivalency has been most thoroughly worked our by Eugence A. Nida, Toward a Science of Translating (Nashville, Tenn.: Nelson, 1986). Its purpose is «to state clearly and accurately and accurately the meaning of the original texts in words and forms that are widely accepted by people who use English as a means of communication.» It attempts to set forth the writer’s «content and message in a standard, everyday, natural form of English.» Its aim is «to give today’s readers maximum understanding of the original texts.» «Every effort has been made to use language that is natural, clear, simple, and unambiguous. Consequently there has been no attempt to reproduce in English the parts of speech, sentence structure, word order and grammatical devices of the original languages. The land plot, acquired for the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission by its head Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin) in 1873, is associated in the Christian Tradition with the location of the house of Zacchaeus, the tax collector. The ruins of a Byzantine monastery and the mosaic on the tomb of Abbot Kiriak, located on the territory of the representation, are viewed as evidence for that claim. Nevertheless, few saw the real miracle coming – the book has made it on to the list of bestsellers in Moscow bookstores and has remained there for many months; there have already been four editions and the total number of copies exceeds 800,000. Online bookseller Ozon.ru has nominated «Unholy Holies»for the Runet award and it is leading the popular vote for the prestigious«Bolshaya Kniga» (Big Book) Prize. Patriarch Against Electronic Orthodox Encyclopedia admin 03 March 2013 MOSCOW, March 1 (RIA Novosti) – The head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill has spoken out against spending money on an electronic version of the Orthodox Encyclopedia series this week, saying it would be unprofitable. The Orthodox Encyclopedia was launched in 2000 to collect data about history and religion. Some 30 volumes have been published already and many more are still being compiled. The idea of making an electronic version of the printed encyclopedia has been proposed by the Culture Ministry, but the patriarch rejected the idea as unprofitable. “If we switch to the digital version we will lose real income,” Kirill said during a meeting of the Encyclopedia’s supervisory board on Thursday. The money from the print version is needed to finance next volumes of the project, he said. The printed articles of the encyclopedia are available online, the Patriarch added. For Great Lent: the Timeless Instructions of Abba Dorotheos Abba Dorotheus of Gaza. What is one of the first books given to anyone embarking upon the path of Orthodox Christianity? What is one of the books read almost cyclically in the refectories of Orthodox monasteries, so that monks and nuns might assimilate the “ABC’s” of spiritual life with every bite of their daily bread? What is one of the most quoted books of basic wisdom on how to live in peace and harmony with our neighbor? Answer: the book of instructions on spiritual life by Abba Dorotheos of Gaza. There are English translations of this timeless, priceless book available. The most popular was published by Cistercian Publications (July 1, 1978), under the title, Dorotheos of Gaza: Discourses and Sayings. Some of Abba Dorotheos’s instructions also appear in the English translation of the Philokalia. Another translation from the original Greek by an Orthodox publisher in 2000, Athens is entitled, Abba Dorotheos: Practical Teaching on the Christian Life. This version by Constantine Scouteris has an advantage for Orthodox readers over the Cistercian one because of its conceptual closeness to the accepted Greek text; for example the Cistercian translation translates geronda as “old man”, while the Orthodox understanding renders a bit more respect to an “elder”. Nevertheless, the older standby will probably remain in use by English language readers if only because of its lively language and readability. Back before the Athens publication was released, an American monk, concerned about potential confusion in the Catholic rendering of Abba Dorotheos for Orthodox readers, dictated his own translation of this indispensible patristic work from the pre-revolutionary Russian translation. He chose that version for the simple reason that he did not know Greek. Although this translation never saw print, a transcript of it came into our hands, and after a little editing we have decided to make it available online for the spiritual benefit of our readers who may not have access to the above named, more polished texts. And what better time for this could there be than Great Lent, when we are trying extra hard to work on ourselves, on our interaction with others, our attitude, and dedication to living the Gospel commandments. Thus, over the course of this holy Forty-Days Fast, we will be posting this book in daily portions.
