Patriarch Irinej at Mlaka: Serbs Must not Forget Their Victims, but They Must Forgive Source: Serbian Orthodox Church His Holiness the Serbian Patriarch Irinej said at village of Mlaka, near Jasenovac, on April 22, 2018, that the Serbian people should not forget their victims, among whom more than 20.000 killed children at Mlaka and within the Ustasha system of the Jasenovac camp, but that the Christian people must forgive. – The most innocent ones were killed here – children. This is a holy land, soaked with the blood of the Holy Martyrs of Jasenovac, said Patriarch Irinej after having  consecrated the restored church of the Holy Prophet Elijah at Mlaka and after having officiated the Divine hierarchal Liturgy. The Patriarch emphasized that it was important for the Serbian people to have a church at Mlaka resurrected. – For that reason, the Serbs from this region should return to this holy land, to their centuries-old homes, added Patriarch Irinej, and reminded that it was in the 20th century, during the period of science and progress, that Serbs, Jews, Roma and anti-fascists from other peoples were killed, and that children and women were killed at the most cruel way. – Some members of the Tesla family were killed as well. The Patriarch emphasized that God would judge those who had committed such atrocities. His Holiness was concelebrated by Metropolitans Amfilohije of Montenegro-Littoral and Porfirije of Zagreb-Ljubljana as well as by Bishops Jovan of Slavonia, Sergije of Bihac-Petrovac and Bishop emeritus Atanasije. The Holy hierarchal Liturgy was attended by the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska, Nedeljko ubrilovic; envoy of the President of the Republic of Srpska, Miladin Dragicevic; envoy of the Serbian member of the BiH Presidency Milenko Ristic, Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Srpska Dane Malesevic; Ambassador of Serbia to Croatia, Ms. Mira Nikolic as well as a large number of faithful. Cookie policy Metropolitan Jonathan of Tulchyn and Bratslav characterized the words of Patriarch Bartholomew, who condemned the confessional feat of the Ukrainian hierarchs, as blasphemous DECR Communication Service, 01.11.2023. At the request of a human rights group of clerics and laity, Metropolitan Jonathan of Tulchyn and Bratslav assessed the words of Patriarch Bartholomew, who on the 15 th of October 2023, at a meeting with the clerics of the Spanish and Portuguese Metropolitanate of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in Madrid, said that he considered the criminal prosecution of the hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church ‘just and justified’. The response was published by the website of the Tulchyn diocese. Metropolitan Jonathan is convinced that the words of condemnation against the confessional feat of Ukrainian hierarchs who are defending Orthodoxy and their canonical Church are deliberately slanderous, they are sinful and even blasphemous. On the 7 th of August 2023, the 75-year-old seriously ill bishop and a Church composer widely known in the Orthodox world, was sentenced on absurd charges to five years " imprisonment with confiscation of property. Vladyka emphasised: " The strange and unreasonable words of Patriarch Bartholomew in Madrid are like a blunt and rusty sword, which ruthlessly and cruelly wounded the souls of the persecuted hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, its clerics and laity both in Ukraine and in distant countries. He spiritually and symbolically tore the mantle of the High Priest of Constantinople in two, and now, with its inappropriate image, it has lost the gracious power of the mantle of the holy prophet Elijah, the defender of Faith and Truth, and, tainted by lies, cries to Heaven for the fall of its proud former lord to the sinful earth " . Many archpastors, clerics and laity of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have finally lost confidence in the objectivity of the judgements of the Patriarch of Constantinople " after the horrifying words of the head of the Phanar to his clerics in Madrid against the background of pogroms and seizures of churches and monasteries, expulsion of the theological seminary and spiritual academy from Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, against the background of searches, arrests and trials of bishops of the canonical UOC, in light of weeping and grief of the faithful of the UOC… Will it be flattering for him to pray to God in the empty churches of Lavra? " , - asks the hierarch.

An underground church in Australia admin 23 December 2013 About 800 kilometers north from Adelaide, in the state of South Australia, there is a unique monument, not only of Serbian but also of world culture and architecture. It is the church of Prophet Elijah, completely situated underground. The Serbs who migrated to Coober Pedy, had a need for a spiritual, religious life. Our miners who were digging semi-precious stones, opal, dug one of the most beautiful pearls not only of the Serbian Orthodox, but also of  the overall Christian culture. Since it is a desert area where temperatures reach above 40 degrees Celsius, our people found an unique and ingenious solution. They built a church underground, at the depth of 9 meters, 30 meters long. They have now a church, a church hall, a parish house and a church school – everything underground. This church has unique frescoes, since they are cut in the rocks, not painted. Following the Romanian example, the iconostasis was painted on the glass behind which lights shine. His Grace Bishop Irinej of Australia-New Zealand, in his statement to RTS, pointed out particularity of this church: “The Serbian Orthodox Church possesses the most unique Serbian church in the world – in Coober Pedy in South Australia… This is a most unique case because the church is literally underground.” The Church of Saint Elijah the Prophet celebrated its 20 th anniversary this year. The RTS correspondent from Australia Dragan Caran has announced a documentary on this unique cultural monument.
