Apostle and Evangelist Matthew Commemorated on November 16 The Holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew, was also named Levi (Mark 2:14; Luke 5:27); he was one of the Twelve Apostles (Mark 3:18; Luke 6:45; Acts 1:13), and was brother of the Apostle James Alphaeus (Mark 2:14). He was a publican, or tax-collector for Rome, in a time when the Jews were under the rule of the Roman Empire. He lived in the Galilean city of Capernaum. When Matthew heard the voice of Jesus Christ: “Come, follow Me” (Mt. 9:9), left everything and followed the Savior. Christ and His disciples did not refuse Matthew’s invitation and they visited his house, where they shared table with the publican’s friends and acquaintances. Like the host, they were also publicans and known sinners. This event disturbed the pharisees and scribes a great deal. Publicans who collected taxes from their countrymen did this with great profit for themselves. Usually greedy and cruel people, the Jews considered them pernicious betrayers of their country and religion. The word “publican” for the Jews had the connotation of “public sinner” and “idol-worshipper.” To even speak with a tax-collector was considered a sin, and to associate with one was defilement. But the Jewish teachers were not able to comprehend that the Lord had “come to call not the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Mt. 9:13). Matthew, acknowledging his sinfulness, repaid fourfold anyone he had cheated, and he distributed his remaining possessions to the poor, and he followed after Christ with the other apostles. St Matthew was attentive to the instructions of the Divine Teacher, he beheld His innumerable miracles, he went together with the Twelve Apostles preaching to “the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Mt. 10:6). He was a witness to the suffering, death, and Resurrection of the Savior, and of His glorious Ascension into Heaven. Having received the grace of the Holy Spirit, which descended upon the Apostles on the day of Pentecost, St Matthew preached in Palestine for several years. At the request of the Jewish converts at Jerusalem, the holy Apostle Matthew wrote his Gospel describing the earthly life of the Savior, before leaving to preach the Gospel in faraway lands.

protopresbyter Thomas Hopko Скачать epub pdf Volume III – Church History Introduction Volume 3 of The Orthodox Faith, entitled Church History, is a succinct overview of Christian history century by century. It presents the most important historical events, leading personalities, and significant doctrinal, liturgical, spiritual, and ecclesiastical developments in the Eastern Orthodox Church, giving the traditional Orthodox perspectives on the historical data. It also includes major events, personalities, and developments in the Christian West, both Roman Catholic and Reformed. The century by century format allows the reader to see what was happening at the same time in different places. The recent centuries that deal with Orthodoxy in North America, and especially with the pre-history and history of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), are treated at greater length because of their nearness to us in time and place, their complexity and importance, and the variety of interpretations that exist today about what occurred. As an OCA publication, this volume provides the OCA’s understanding and interpretation of the historical events. First Century Christ and the Apostles The first century of the Christian era begins with the birth of Jesus Christ from the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem. Christ lived, preached, did mighty acts, was crucified, rose again, and ascended into Heaven in the first several decades of the first century. After His Ascension into Heaven, God sent the Holy Spirit upon Christ’s disciples on the Feast of Pentecost (Acts 2), empowering them to take Christ’s Gospel to the ends of the known world. During His life on earth, Jesus selected disciples-first the Twelve ( Mt 10.2–4 ) and then the Seventy ( Lk 10.1 ). He trained them to be the leaders of His Church. After Pentecost, the Apostles preached the Gospel of Christ far and wide. We do not know exactly where all the Apostles traveled, but we know a good deal about the missionary journeys of Saint Paul, which are recorded in the Book of Acts (chs. 13–28). In his extensive travels Saint Paul founded many churches in Asia Minor and Greece. All the Twelve Apostles (including Saint Matthias, who took Judas’s place-Acts 1.15–26) except Saint John, as well as many of the Seventy, died as martyrs for their faith in Christ.

John Anthony McGuckin Calendar JOHN A. MCGUCKIN The calendar, in Orthodox usage, signifies the manner in which the yearly cycle of liturgical feasts is arranged in the church. From the very beginnings of the Christian Church there was a marked desire among believers to celebrate liturgically that central moment of salvation history: the monumental events surrounding the Lord’s death and resurrection, the great Paschal Mystery which included his cross and his glory as one. Liturgically separated out, so as to provide pause and meditative space for the faithful to “ponder these things” ( Lk. 2.19 ), the Paschal Mystery itself refuses to be divided up by aspect or human chronology. It is one living reality, not a series of disparate events. So, to that extent, it is impossible to set apart the Lord’s ministry from his sufferings, for they make a seamless weave. It is impossible to separate Great Friday from Pascha Sunday, or to divide out the mystery of Ascension and Pentecost. It is only a time-bounded chronological mindset that sets them in different chronological sequences. In God’s work of salvation it is not Chronos (time sequence) that matters but Kairos (the timeless moment of the opportunity of Grace). Pentecost and Pascha are not just things of the past, they are things of the present moment of God’s glory, and of the church’s future hope – its eschatological reality. The calendar, therefore, is a meditative aid to realize the complexity of the eschatological Kairos which the church senses as profound Mystery of Christ. It is not meant to be a ground plan, objectively real and definitive, as much as a cycle of recurring and elliptical reflections on the central mystery of the Word’s redemption of his people. Liturgically, the calendar revolves around Pascha. The Paschal cycle begins four weeks before Lent opens, with the Sunday of the Prodigal Son (announcing the overarching theme of repentance). Prior to Pascha come the Sundays of Great Lent, each with their own theme and motif, announced in the gospel of the day as well as in certain “saints of repentance” who are commemorated (Mary of Egypt, for example, or John of the Ladder), and also the Entry to Jerusalem.

Cookie policy Had St.Meletius of Antioch been ordained by the Arians: another faulty analogy in the ordination issue Had St.Meletius of Antioch been ordained by the Arians: another faulty analogy in the ordination issue   Bishop Sylvester of Belogorodka, vicar of the Kiev Metropolia, rector of the Kiev Theological Academy and Seminary   In the course of debates on the order of acceptance into the Church of persons ordained in schismatic communities one can often hear references to various precedents in history. For instance, the defenders of the position of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which had received members of the UOC KP and UAOC into communion without reordination, cite examples of acceptance in the present dignity of persons ordained by schismatics and even by heretics. Yet, in most cases these examples do not seem to be convincing upon closer look. We will focus our attention on an example that one can encounter rather often. This is the ordination of St. Meletius and his ascension to the See of Antioch in 360. Assertions can be found in the literary works that he was ordained by the Arians. This is what both ancient church writers and modern researchers say. For instance, Socrates Scholasticus in his “Ecclesiastical History” wrote that the adherents of the Nicene faith believed that “Meletius had been ordained by the Arians” (Book II, ch. 44) St. Epiphanius of Cyprus wrote that St. Meletius “had been ordained by the Arians, followers of Acacius [of Caesarea]” (Panarion, 73, 28) Quite recently the same was said by Metropolitan Kyrillos (Katerelos) of Krini, the Patriarchate of Constantinople and by Abbot Antipa of St. Anne’s scete on Mt. Athos As far as is known, St. Meletius was held in special veneration during his lifetime both in Antioch and in Constantinople and presided at the Second Ecumenical Council in 381. How can these facts consist with the accusations of Arianism? Some Orthodox authors have already answered this question but, nonetheless, we will try to look more closely at this episode in church history.

Commentary Supplement As was anticipated, certain additional sources have been identified during the course of work on this edition (see vol. I, p. lv). The following notes indicate those sources, and any further relevant information, for poems in vols. I and II. Entries in Russian are supplied by Lydia Sazonova. Благо творити . Based on Faber, In Festo Ascensionis Domini, No. 5 «Cur in die Ascensionis Christi fiat mentio Iudicii», sect. 5 «Ad consolationem discipulorum», the final words of the sermon: «Quare, fratres mei charissimi, et desideratissimi, rogo vos per diem ilium iudicii, quern hodie nobis annuntiarunt Angeli; ita vos geritote, ut venientem iudicem cum desiderio expectare, et cum gaudio videre possitis, Amen.» Блудница 2 . Taken from Polyanthea , «Meretrix»: «In favo mellis duo sunt; scilicet mel & cera: in facie meretricis similiter duo scilicet decor & gratia: hoc est pulchritudo oris, & dulcedo sermonis. Cera succendit ignem, mel praebet dulcedinem: Sic pulchritudo meretricis igne libidinis inflammat carnem, blandimento lenocinantis sermonis subvertit mentem. Stillat mel ex cera, dum meretrix verba sua mollit, & facit dulcia, Lib. De nuptiis carnalib, vitandis» (p. 738). Блудница 3 . Taken from Polyanthea , ibid., the passage immediately following: »Erasmi Roterodami. Quemadmodum echeneis sive remora piscis perpusillis (est autem magnae limaci similis) quamvis magnam navim velis ac remis incitatam subito sistit: Ita scortulum aliquoties adamatum, ingentes animi ad honesta impetus retinet alligatque» (ibid.). Богатство 5 . Taken from Meffreth, Feria 6 Post Oculi. The image is based on the text for the sermon: «Omnis qui biberit ex aqua hac, sitiet iterum Si autem biberit ex hac aqua, quam ego dabo ei, non sitiet in aeternum loan. [D. Chrysostomi] Homil. 33. epist. ad Hebraeos» (p. 346).
