Ханаанский царь Арада, живущий к югу, услышав, что Израиль идет дорогою от Афарима, вступил в сражение с Израильтянами, и несколько из них взял в плен ( Чucл. XXI, 1 ). Где и при каких обстоятельствах произошло что событие? Ответ на этот вопрос настолько труден, что некоторые экзегеты, чтобы избегнуть топографических трудностей, понимают слово atarim в переносном смысле, как соглядатай, или же наставляют его в связь с Арабским athár, которое означает небольшую дорожку, тропинку. Само собою понятно, что тогда все действие переносится совершенно в другую местность и путь Израильтян получает иное направление. – Дело в том, что Арад находится очень далеко от горы Ор и даже гораздо севернее Ain Gadis против Мертвого моря („живущий к югу“, т. е. от Палестины, а не от Кадеса) 59 ) Местность эта известна теперь под именем Tell ’Aràd; но памятников осталось здесь слишком мало, что бы можно было с полною уверенностью судить о характере страны и границах прежнего Ханаанского царства. Небольшой холм и довольно значительные по величине развалины: – вот все, что находит здесь современный путешественник 60 ) – Как бы то ни было, область Aràd вовсе не соприкасается с пределами горы Ор и потому столкновение ханаанитского царя с Израильтянами в ’Arabah было решительно не возможно. Исход теперь только один и именно: предположить, что Евреи были на границах Tell ’Aràd и здесь имели кончившуюся для них несчастливо схватку с войсками тамошнего владетеля. Положение рассказа об этом событии между повествованием о смерти Аарона ( Числ. ХХ, 29 ) и отшествием Израильтян к Чермному морю ( Чucл. XXI, 4 ) действительно наводит на мысль, что здесь разумеется отдельный эпизод, и вовсе не указывается направление пути Евреев и не говорится о сражении в равнине ’Arabah. Очень естественно предположить, что во время 30-ти дневного пребывания при горе Ор некоторые отряды Израильтян снова двинулись на север с целью проникнуть отсюда в Палестину. Отказ Едомитян пропустить Евреев чрез свои земли вынуждал их к длинному и трудному обходу около гор ’Агаван; между тем дорога чрез „южную страну“ была, так близка и удобна.
