The archpastor was assisted by Archbishop Yelisey of Sourozh, Hieromonk Ioann (Kopeikin), pro-rector for training, Ss Cyril and Methodius Institute of Post-Graduate Studies; and the clergy of the Dormition Cathedral. After the service, Archbishop Yelisey warmly greeted Metropolitan Hilarion, saying in particular, ‘We are very grateful to His Holiness the Patriarch for having entrusted you with the mission to continue the dialogue with the Anglican Church despite all the challenges. To preserve the apostolic traditions of the undivided Church takes a great deal of work. Much depends on us as the Orthodox, on how hard we will work together with our Anglican brothers. We are also grateful to you for raising the question about the future of Christianity in Western Europe, what place it will occupy’. Archbishop Yelisey wished Metropolitan Hilarion fortitude so that he may ‘use the gifts you already have for the prosperity and assertion of the Church of Christ not only in our homeland but also beyond it, including in the British Islands’. Then Metropolitan Hilarion addressed himself to the congregation with an archpastoral homily: “Your Eminence, Dear Fathers, Brothers and Sisters: I would like to convey to you all a blessing from His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. Less than a year has passed since he visited this country and celebrated in this holy church. His Holiness cherishes the memory of that visit and embraces you all, dear fathers, brothers and sisters, in his prayer.

Spiritual Guidance in Mount Athos and Russia and the Theological Notion of Person Скачать epub pdf Содержание The Theological Perspective The Purposes of Spiritual Guidance Eldership as an Ideal of Spiritual Leadership The Historical Overview: Kievο-Pechersky Monastery The Hesychasm Movement, St. Serge of Radonezh and His Disciples St. Paisios of Moldova and a Wave of Spiritual Revival in Russia The revival of Russian monasticism on Mount Athos Distinctive Characteristics of the patterns of Orthodox Spiritual Guidance Personal Relationship and its Dynamics in Spiritual Guidance Catholicity and the Person’s Embracing of other Persons Freedom in Spiritual Guidance Creativity and Uniqueness in Spiritual Guidance Humility and Morality in Spiritual Counselling Love, Integrity and Discernment in Spiritual Fatherhood     We will consider the great importance in spiritual guidance of the theological notion of the divine and human person. Our main thesis is that it is only through the person and personal communion that the guidance patterns found in the Bible and in the Holy Tradition of asceticism can be understood. Various examples of the influence of the ascetic tradition of Mount Athos on Russian and European religious revivals are highlighted in the framework of personal guidance. St. Paisios Velichkovskiy, the Optina elders, St. Silouan and Archimandrite Sophrony (Sakharov), all of whom derived a rich experience from the Athonite treasuries, are vivid exemplars of personal spiritual guidance in the Orthodox Tradition. Due to its personal character this guidance possesses unique characteristics which distinguish it from other guidance experiences and techniques used in various human activities. ‘Send me a man, who would know Thee’ Symeon the New Theologian. In this paper we aim to show that Mount Athos, as a living, natural part of the Orthodox Tradition, has given us an abundant experience of the importance of the personal character of the relationship between the one who aspires to certain spiritual achievements and the one who guides him on this way.

Athos where they have been kept permanently for many years, reports the St. Basil the Great Foundation’s website. It should be noted that one more great Orthodox relic was brought together with the saint’s venerable head from Mt. Athosthe wonderworking icon of our Lord Jesus Christ before which Venerable Silouan had experienced a vision of the Savior. In all approximately 315,000 people have venerated the relics of the holy elder Silouan the Athonite in Belarus and Russia. In Moscow around 65,000 people have venerated the relics of the saint and the same number of small icons of the saint were distributed. Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia venerated the relics twice over the time of their stay in the capital. The last pilgrims venerated the relics early Saturday morning before the patriarchal service. The reliquary with the relics stayed at the Danilov Monastery and in the afternoon the delegation of Athonite monks departed for Greece with the holy relics. With the departure of the Athonite monks’ delegation the main Moscow celebrations of the 1000th anniversary of the Russian monastic presence on Holy Mount Athos came to a close. Patriarch Kirill, while opening the jubilee celebrations on September 21, referred to the first bringing of relics of Venerable Silouan the Athonite to the canonical territory of the Russian Orthodox Church on August 20 – September 24 as an historic event. The reliquary had never left the territory of Mt. Athos before. From August 20 on the holy relics were also venerated in Minsk, Bryansk, Orel, Yelets, the Shovskoye village, Tambov, Yekaterinburg, and St. Petersburg. Moscow was the final destination in the Athonite monks’ itinerary.

The Founding of a New Monastery for the Western American Diocese September 16, 2015      By the grace of God, a new men’s monastery of the Western American Diocese [of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad] will be formally blessed following a service of the Divine Liturgy on the new monastery’s patronal feast day of St. Silouan the Athonite (11th/24th September 2015). The festal Divine Liturgy will be concelebrated by the Diocesan Hierarch, His Eminence Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco and Western America, and His Eminence’s Auxiliary, His Grace Bishop Theodosy of Seattle. Following the Liturgy a moleben will be served, with a procession and blessing of the whole of the 47.5-acre monastery property.      The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia blessed the foundation of the Monastery of St. Silouan during its regular session in May 2015, and since that time work has been underway in earnest to prepare the property and facilities for its formal establishment by the Diocesan Hierarch. The large property, which is a generous benefaction given for the explicit purpose of founding the monastery, is ideal for monastic life: nestled in the Sonora Foothills at the edge of Yosemite National Park, it includes two wooded peaks separated by a valley with a small stream, its own well and a spring that all remain richly active even in the deepest drought, as well as ample land for building cells and structures, agriculture, and other monastic activities —all of which will form part of a Master Plan for the monastery’s development into the future. The property includes several existing buildings which, without requiring construction of any kind, are already being employed for monastery use: this includes a main monastery house, part of which has been converted into the monastery’s temporary chapel, kitchens and a refectory, cells and modest guest accommodations.      All are invited to the celebration of the Divine Liturgy for the Feastday of St. Silouan the Athonite and the blessing of the monastery, which will take place on September 24 2015. The founding of a new monastery is an infrequent event in the life of a Diocese, and we look forward to welcoming pilgrims not only from our own Diocese, but also from our fellow Orthodox jurisdictions in the area. By the mercy of God, we pray this new monastery may become a spiritual resource for Orthodox faithful for generations to come.

At the end of the Divine Liturgy a sermon about Saint Silouan and the purpose of monasteries for the world was given by Archimandrite Irenei ; and the Divine Services were completed as the faithful participated in a Cross Procession through the grounds of the monastery property. With lamp, cross and banners, holy relics of the Saint and the monastery’s newly-commissioned Patronal Icon, the clergy, choir and faithful trekked in orderly formation across the expanses of the monastery, at which time the sites for new cells, the cemetery and a new cross high upon a ridge were blessed. This new monastery is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, not far from the historical Gold Rush town of Sonora, California. From the heights of the monastery’s 47-acre parcel of land one can glimpse parts of the renowned Yosemite National Park. Possessing both peaks and lowlands, and with a natural year-round water supply, the site is well suited for the monastic life. The fathers will live in individual cells that will dot the hillsides above the entrance and current complex. On the hills’ inclines, plans are being made for the construction of a chapel for daily prayers and perhaps, in time, a new refectory. Below, towards the entrance to the monastery, are existing structures currently serving the needs of the brotherhood. In this area, a catholicon will be constructed for use on the major feasts of the Church.

He has a deep passion for Orthodox cosmology, as well as its environmental implications. He has served as the U.S. Director of the U.K.-based Religious Education and Environment Programme and has authored two books and nearly a hundred articles on spirituality, theology, and the environment. He founded and served for twelve years as the editor of the journal Epiphany and has served as the Director of Education for the American Exarchate of the Jerusalem Patriarchate. At one time he was a Roman Catholic pre-seminarian student and worked as a Chinese specialist for the Intelligence Section of the U.S. Navy, and was instrumental in guiding a group of hundreds into the Orthodox faith in the 1980’s, which led to his studying under Metropolitan Kallistos. Vincent currently resides at St. Silouan the Athonite Monastery (ROCOR) in Sonora, CA. St. Maximos the Confessor In accordance with that sound hermeneutical attitude which seeks dialogue between patristic writers and the concerns of our own time, some Maximian scholars have attempted to find the relevance of St. Maximos the Confessor for today. Because of the pervasive cosmological orientation in the theology of St. Maximos, it seems natural to seek for affinities between the thought of the Confessor and contemporary natural science. Since the ruling idea in natural science today is the doctrine of evolution, it is perhaps inevitable that scholars are led to reflect on the relevance of Maximos’ cosmological vision to the world-picture which is supported by the notion of evolution. Thus, P. Nellas opines that evolution does not create a problem for a thinker like Maximos because evolution is concerned with matter and the essence of man does not lie in the matter from which he was created but in the archetype on the basis of which he was formed. Lars Thunberg speculates that Maximos might be of help in interpreting contemporary evolutionary cosmology in a Christian way by means of his logos doctrine which emphasizes Christ as both Creator and Consummator. He also recognizes an affinity between the evolutionary speculations of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and those of Maximos, in particular their common positive evaluation of movement as a creative force.

St. Tikhon’s Seminary to host continuing education symposium June 17-19 Source: OCA Natalya Mihailova 19 May 2014 Saint Tikhon’s Seminary here will host its annual Continuing Clergy Education Symposium June 17-19, 2014. This is the second year that the school will provide this symposium to enable OCA priests and deacons to fulfill their annual 20 hours of continuing education studies mandated by the Holy Synod of Bishops. The list of speakers and topics to be included in this year’s symposium includes the following 1. “Spiritual Life in Saint Silouan the Athonite” by Christopher Veniamin, D. Phil. (Oxon.), Professor of Patristics at Saint Tikhon’s Seminary – Tuesday, June 17, at 1:00 p.m.  This presentation will examine the spiritual life of the great 20th century Athonite saint.  The aim of the study is to present something of the ethos of the Orthodox Patristic Tradition, in a way that helps identify that which distinguishes it from every other philosophy, religion and creed.  It is hoped that the lessons learned will be directly applicable to one’s everyday life. 2. “The Greeting of Mary and Elizabeth: The Sanctity of Life” by Archpriest John Kowalczyk, Senior Lecturer in Pastoral Practice, Director of Field Education at Saint Tikhon’s Seminary –Tuesday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m.  An exegesis of Luke 1:39-56 serves as a foundation for pastoral ministry.  This lecture will develop the need for ministry to pregnant unwed mothers and the necessary consoling and embrace by the Church of older women in time of crisis.  An explanation of the Icon of the Greeting of Mary and Elizabeth will be related to the moral crisis in America and the need for the intercession of the Theotokos in a post-Christian culture. 3. “Prayer as Communion – Personal and Liturgical Prayer” by Igumen Sergius, Abbot of Saint Tikhon’s Monastery and Lecturer in Spirituality at the Seminary – Wednesday, June 18, at 9:00 a.m.  The Fathers always linked salvation with prayer.  However, how prayer is understood has a direct effect on how one prays.  Using the patristic foundation of prayer as communion, this presentation will look to contemporary saints to increase one’s appreciation for prayer’s place in the Church and its necessity in one’s life; to gain renewed zeal for one’s prayer life; and to deepen one’s understanding of the Church offered through her liturgical life, by which we may present Christ to the world.

Elder Tikhon, spiritual father of St. Paisios the Athonite, proposed for canonization Moscow, March 30, 2017 Elder Tikhon (left) and St. Paisios (right). A fresco in the Church of All Athonite Saints at St. Panteleimon " s Monastery on Mt. Athos. Photo: afonit.info      The question of the glorification of the Russian Athonite elder Tikhon (Golenkov), the spiritual father of St. Paisios the Athonite, was recently discussed at the Moscow Theological Academy at the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. The discussion occurred as part of the academy’s “Day of the Memory of Two Elders: St. Paisios the Athonite and Archimandrite Kirill (Pavlov),” in which the new book Athonite Elder Tikhon (Golenkov) (in Russian) was presented. The hope was expressed that the Church would support the glorification of this great twentieth-century elder, reports a correspondent of the site Russian Athos . The new book dedicated to Elder Tikhon was published with the blessing of the abbot of Koutloumousiou Monastery Archimandrite Christodoulos, who was the confessor and co-struggler of the great St. Paisios the Athonite. The book has been recommended for distribution by the publishing house of the Russian Orthodox Church. Meanwhile, according to Russian Minister of Justice Alexander Konovalov, Metropolitan Zenobius of Saransk and Mordovia and the head of the Russian Church’s committee for canonization Bishop Pankraty of Troitsk have introduced an initiative to glorify Elder Tikhon as a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church. “We are hoping for Church-wide support for the initiative,” the minister stated. Interest in the person of Fr. Tikhon has grown since the canonization of his most famous disciple St. Paisios the Athonite in 2015. As noted by Konovalov, “In 1,000 years of the presence of Russian monks on Mt. Athos, only one of the Russian ascetics has been glorified by the Church of Constantinople—St. Silouan the Athonite… In this regard, we found it reasonable to also publish a book about the teacher and co-struggler of St. Pasios, who was the Russian elder Tikhon.” Elder Tikhon was born in 1884 in the Russian Empire, in the village of Novaya Mikhaylovka (in present-day Volgograd). At the age of 24 he arrived to Mt. Athos where he spent the remaining sixty years of his life in unceasing prayer and repentance. He is an example to all of a true Christian and monk who already in his lifetime acquired the Holy Spirit, and his relics have been shown to be incorrupt. 30 марта 2017 г.
