Next Sunday the young man came to the monastery again, but this time full of joy, and he told with great emotion what had happened. " When we left here on Thursday morning, we returned home and found my father very disturbed. When I asked him what was wrong, he said: 'Something fearful happened last night. While I was sleeping, there appeared before me a tall old man with gray hair and beard, who woke me up and said: " Get up, my child, and dig there (he showed me the exact place) to find your son's magic charm. " After that he disappeared. I was so frightened that I stayed in bed waiting for it to get light.' " (It is evident that the tall old man who appeared was St. Cyprian, who went, while the Vigil was being celebrated and the prayers being read, to the couple's house to reveal to his father this demonic business.) The young man continued: " I asked my father where the old man told him to dig. He showed me, and forty centimeters down I found these strange things. " He gave the abbot a white handkerchief with a large knot, which proved when opened to contain the dust of a dead body and the couple's initials. Exorcisms were read over it, and the young man left again. Two days later the abbot saw an old woman kneeling and weeping before the icon of St. Cyprian and St. Justina. When asked what had happened, she replied that she was the mother of the young man from Aspopyrgo, and from the day they had come to the monastery, they had been completely well, and were living in great happiness. She had come to thank the Saints, full of gratitude for the great gift they had given. (By Archimandrite [now Metropolitan] Cyprian of the Monastery of Sts. In 1416 Athens was occupied by the Turks and the Monastery experienced two disasters. During the first the Saint had been praying in a cave on the mountain, but at the second on 14 September 1425 they returned and they tortured Saint Ephraim with particular ferocity for eight and a half months. He was martyred on 5 May 1426 at the age of forty-two in Nea Makri. His holy relics were discovered through divine intervention in 1950; 524 years after his death. He was formally glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in March 2011. Photo: Mystagogy      Meanwhile, Mystagogy also reports that on Monday, February 20, Dr. Ozcan Isiklar, the mayor of Selybria (Silivri), a city in Istanbul Province along the Sea of Marmara in Turkey, met with Metropolitan Maximos of Selybria to update him on the municipality’s work to restore the house of St. Nektarios, where he lived for the first fourteen years of his life. Photo: Mystagogy    St. Nektarios was born in the house on October 1, 1846 and moved to Constantinople for studies as a teenager. The house was destroyed in 1976, but now the municipality is planning to rebuild the house, in conjunction with the aforementioned local bishop. The house is to operate as a museum, featuring several objects from the life of St. Nektarios. It is hoped that the museum will attract Orthodox Christian pilgrims and boost the local economy. A large model of the project and a photo of St. Nektarios have been erected at the site of the future museum. 7 марта 2017 г. As shown by the book of Ezra, the Jews who responded to the edict immediately began to organize themselves for the homeward journey (Ezra 1:5 month” (Tishri, corresponding to parts of September and October) they had settled in their home cities. (Ezra 3:1 imply that this was still in the “first year of Cyrus” (Ezra 1:1 therefore, conclude that this was in the autumn of 538 B.C.E. and not in 537 as the Watch Tower Society insists. (See for example Dr. T. C. Mitchell’s discussion in The Cambridge Ancient History, 2nd ed., Vol. III:2, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1991, pp. 430432; also the thorough discussion of the historicity of Cyrus’ edict by Elias Bickerman in Studies in Jewish and Christian History, Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1976, pp. 72108.) The Watch Tower Society, however, cannot accept the 538 B.C.E. date for the return, as that would move the beginning of their seventyyear period back to 608 B.C.E. This, of course, would destroy their Gentile times calculation. 151 many cases involves information of a technical nature, accompanied by detailed documentation. While this contributes to the firm foundation of the dates established, it is also made necessary by attempts on the part of some sources to counteract the historical evidence, offering information that has an appearance of validity, even of scholarliness, but which, on examination, proves invalid and often superficial. Some readers may find the technical data difficult to follow. Those who do not feel they need all the details may turn directly to the summaries at the end of each of these two chapters. These summaries give a general idea of the discussion, the evidence presented, and the conclusions drawn from it. 152 (3rd century B.C.E.), Berossus (c. 250 B.C.E.), Alexander Polyhistor (1st century B.C.E.), Eusebius Pamphilus (c. 260340 C.E.), and Georgius Syncellus (last part of the 8th century C.E.). J. Gerstner, Jonathan Edwards: A Mini Theology. ___ «An Outline of the Apologetics of Jonathan Edwards»//Bib. Sac., 133 (January-March 1976; April-June 1976; July-September 1976; October-December 1976).

The Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir comes to USA The Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir returns to America this October for the first time since their historic 2007 world tour. This acclaimed all-male choir from the famous 600-year-old Sretensky Monastery will embark on a three-week nine-city good will tour under the direction of Nikon Zhila, to celebrate the five-year anniversary of the reunification of the Russian Orthodox Church. Along with performances in the nation’s most prestigious concert halls, the choir will participate in Liturgies and Vespers as well as outreach activities throughout the US. The tour program provides a unique overview of Russia’s rich choral tradition. Passionate scholars of liturgical music, members of The Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir have unearthed forgotten ancient chants and arranged them with the 21st Century perspective, to be included in the concerts. The secular selections consist of Russian, Ukrainian and Cossack folk songs as well as popular 20th century romances. One of the featured soloists, Dmitry Beloselsky, was discovered by the international opera community when he performed with the choir on their 2007 world tour. This launched a solo career that brought him to the world’s leading opera houses including last year’s productions of Nabucco at The Metropolitan Opera where he appeared in the role of Zaccaria, and Boris Godunov at the Bolshoi Theatre where he played the tilte role. The complete tour schedule of the Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir is as follows: Monday, October 8 at 7.30pm – Washington, DC – Kennedy Center/Terrace Theatre Tuesday, October 9 at 7.30pm – Boston, MA – Cutler Majestic Thursday, October 11 at 8pm – Chicago, IL – Symphony Hall Monday, October 15 at 7pm – New York – Carnegie Hall/Perelman Stage Wednesday, October 17 at 8pm – Miami, FL – Adrienne Arscht Center for the Performing Arts Friday, October 19 at 8pm – Dallas, TX – Majestic Theatre Sunday, October 21 at 7.30pm – Seattle, WA – Meany Hall Monday, October 22 at 7pm – San Francisco, CA – Marines Memorial

Father Kochurov faithfully served the cathedral until he and his family returned to their native Russia in 1907.  Ten years later—on October 31, 1917—he became the first clergyman to be martyred for his faith at the outset of the Russian Revolution.  Canonized as a saint in December 1994—during the bi-centennial year of Orthodox Christianity’s arrival in North America—he is remembered to this day as “Saint John of Chicago” . A major celebration of Saint John’s feast day will be observed at Chicago’s Holy Trinity Cathedral on the last weekend of October 2016.  His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon will join His Grace, Bishop Paul of Chicago for the celebration.  Also participating in the weekend’s services will be His Grace, Bishop Mstislav of Tikhvin, Russia, who will gift the cathedral will an exact reproduction of the wonderworking Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God —the widely venerated,  ancient icon that had been enshrined for centuries in Jerusalem, Constantinople and since the 1400s, northern Russia.  After World War II, the icon was brought to Chicago and enshrined in Holy Trinity Cathedral.  In 2004, it was returned to Tikhvin and once again placed in the monastery there.  The reproduction will be permanently enshrined in the cathedral. According to the cathedral’s Dean, Archpriest John Adamcio, the celebration will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 29 with the greeting of the hierarchs at the cathedral entrance and the singing of the Akathistos Hymn in honor of the Tikhvin Icon.  The Vigil will follow at 4:30 p.m. On Sunday, October 30, the festal Divine Liturgy will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the entrance of the hierarchs.  Another icon—depicting 19th and 20th century saints associated with the cathedral, painted by local iconographer Arlene Tilghman—will be blessed at the conclusion of services.  The icon anticipates the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the establishment of the cathedral community and the 100th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint John which, according to Father Adamcio, will be celebrated in 2017.
