Patriarch Bartholomew: “The Ecumenical Patriarchate recognizes the difficult challenges facing the blessed Ukrainian people today” Source: The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Message By His All-Holiness to the Devout Ukrainian People on the occasion of the Triumphal Entry of our Lord Jesus Christ into the Holy City of Jerusalem Your Excellencies, the political and ecclesiastical leaders of the Orthodox people of Ukraine; Beloved and precious Orthodox Ukrainian faithful: Слава Христу! The Holy Mother and Great Church of Christ of Constantinople regards the Ukrainian nation and people as Her precious sons and daughters, born from the baptismal waters that flowed through the banks of the Dnepr River. From the days of our brilliant predecessor, Saint Photios the Great, the love of the Mother Church for the pious Christians of your lands has never abated. The Ecumenical Patriarchate recognizes the difficult challenges facing the blessed Ukrainian people today. Furthermore, it acknowledges the deep scars and open wounds from the grievous Holodomor, the World Wars of the 20th century, and the pressure on a nation emerging from decades of totalitarian tyranny. This is why we take this opportunity, on the celebration of our Lord’s Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, to exhort all the pious Orthodox Christians of Ukraine that they maintain “the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Eph. 4.3) The Kingdom of Christ is not of this world, for as He Himself told Pilate: “My kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18.36) In the “triumph” that is foreshadowed on Palm Sunday, we celebrate the victory of love over hatred, of truth over falsehood, and of life over death. We believe that the goodwill of the Ukrainian people will succeed in bringing healing and ultimate reconciliation. As for the enduring ecclesiastical controversies, we know that by the Grace of God and the agreement of the Heads of the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches, the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church will be convened by us here in the year 2016. It is our wholehearted hope and prayer that, by that time, all divisions may be healed for the sake of the unity of the Ukrainian people.

Egyptians gather by a Coptic church that was bombed on Sunday in Tanta, Egypt (Reuters) At least 43 people have been killed in bomb attacks on two Egyptian Coptic churches on Palm Sunday that included the seat of the Coptic Pope, the latest assault on a religious minority increasingly targeted by Islamist militants. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks, which also injured more than 100 people and occurred a week before Coptic Easter, with Pope Francis scheduled to visit Egypt later this month. Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi says a three-month state of emergency will be imposed after the two deadly bombings. “A series of steps will be taken, most importantly, the announcement of a state of emergency for three months after legal and constitution steps are taken,” Sisi said in a speech aired on state television. The army chief-turned-president hasn’t detailed the legal measures needed to declare the state of emergency but according to the Egyptian constitution, the parliament majority must vote in favor of the state of emergency. Both attacks happened on Palm Sunday a week before Coptic Easter, with Pope Francis scheduled to visit Egypt later this month. Sisi has also ordered military troops be deployed across the country. “President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces has ordered units from the military to immediately deploy and assist the civilian police in securing vital facilities in all provinces of the republic,” his office said in a statement earlier on Sunday. Two Islamic State militants wearing suicide vests carried out the deadly church bombings the group said, as it warned of future attacks in a statement. The Alexandria bombing was carried out by an Islamic State militant the group identified as Abu Al-Baraa Al-Masri, while the Tanta church bombing was carried out by an individual it named as Abu Ishaaq Al-Masri. The first bombing, in Tanta, a Nile Delta city about 100km north of Cairo, tore through the inside of St. George Church during its Palm Sunday service, killing at least 27 people and injuring at least 78, the Ministry of Health said.

Egypt’s churches decided to halt all their activities, including trips and religious conferences, after they had received a warning from security sources regarding possible attacks, church and security sources said on Thursday. The activities will be suspended for the remainder of July. The Coptic Orthodox, Catholic, and Evangelical churches agreed on the decision to protect the Christians, the largest religious minority in Egypt. “The decision was taken by the three churches after they had consulted security sources. It’s important to protect Christians and their gatherings,” a church leader told the privately-owned Al-Masry Al-Youm. Tens of Copts have been killed since December 2016 following several terrorist attacks targeting them. The Islamic state (IS) claimed responsibility for all the attacks against Egypt’s Christians and further threatened that there will be more attacks held against them. The  last attack of IS militants  against Egypt’s Copts took place in May, one day prior to the holy month of Ramadan, when militants opened fire on Christians in Minya governorate, killing 29 and injuring 25 others.  Another attack  in April occurred on Palm Sunday and left about 45 dead and more than 100 injured. Palm Sunday’s attack took place at two different churches, the first one was in Tanta and the second attack was in Alexandria. IS released a  video  in February saying that they will “purify” Cairo from all Christians and said there will be more attacks. They further added that the jailed Islamists will be freed soon.   Code for blog Since you are here… …we do have a small request. More and more people visit Orthodoxy and the World website.      The first Sunday of Great Lent is celebrated as the Triumph of Orthodoxy. This is connected with the victory of the iconodules (those who supported the veneration of sacred images) over the iconoclasts (those who opposed their veneration). The heart of the victory of Orthodoxy in the restoration of iconography—as well as our veneration of the same—is found in the incarnation of Jesus Christ. Christology is the beginning and end of all true theology, and whenever we get Christ wrong, we get everything else wrong. The decrees of the Ecumenical Councils were not as much positive pronouncements of ideas (as if God is a collection of our best notions), but rather opposition to wrong ideas about both the holy Trinity and the person of Jesus Christ. These wrong ideas (heresies) ultimately lead to other errors when taken to their logical conclusions. Erroneous forms of worship, piety, ecclesiology, and so forth. During the second period of iconoclasm, led by Emperor Leo V (ca. A.D. 813–820), the Church was blessed by the courage of Theodore, a priest-monk at the Studious monastery in Constantinople. Like John of Damascus a century before him (during the first period of iconoclasm), Theodore opposed iconoclasm with writings and homilies, directly opposing the will of the emperor. However, I think Theodore’s courage is best displayed by something he did , rather than something he said or wrote. On Palm Sunday in the year 815, Theodore led his fellow monks in a procession through their monastery garden. The garden was surrounded by a high wall, and they processed, singing hymns, with icons held high above their heads, so that only the icons were visible past the top of the wall. This peaceful protest was condemned by Leo, and they all risked punishment or even death by their actions. When iconoclasm was defeated by the Empress Theodora (A.D. 843), a procession was made to the Great Church in Constantinople on the first Sunday of Lent. This procession marked the victory of Orthodoxy in the victory of icons, and the people held icons high above their heads as they marched into the church for liturgy. Imitating Theodore and his companions, this procession marked a new festival for the Church—one that is still celebrated centuries later.

Egypt’s Al-Azhar University to Hold Peace Conference With Pope to ‘Eliminate Conflict, Hate’ Source: The Christian Post Al Azhar mosque in the old city of Cairo December 2, 2011. The grand imam of the Egyptian Muslim institution al-Azhar is holding a World Conference on Peace in Cairo, in which Pope Francis, Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Coptic Pope Tawadros II will also take part “to eliminate the causes of conflict, violence and hate.” The objective of the conference, to be held Thursday and Friday, is to address “a message to the whole world” to “call for peace between religious leaders, between societies and between all the countries of the world,” the office of grand imam of al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed al-Tayeb, says, according to La Croix . Pope Francis is scheduled to give a speech Friday after the grand imam, immediately following his arrival in the Egyptian capital and a “courtesy visit” to President al-Sissi. Francis is also scheduled to meet Pope Tawadros after the conference. The Egyptian Islamic seminary has observed that “human society is currently experiencing overwhelming crises threatening our existence and destroying the essence of human life” and the “bloody, armed conflicts” that have resulted “contradict sublime religious values and humanitarian ideals.” “Considering the expansion of the circle of wars and violence and the rise in terrorism and sectarianism, the voice of reason calls us to do our best to eliminate the causes of suffering and to seek the means of cooperation rather than seeking conflicts …,” the seminary states. Two Coptic churches in Egypt (St. Mark’s Cathedral, the seat of the Coptic pope, and a church in Tanta) were bombed on Palm Sunday, leaving at least 45 people dead and more than 100 injured. Pope Tawadros was leading the mass in Alexandria when the blast occurred. Coptic Christians account for about 10 percent of Egypt’s population of 82 million. The Islamic State, also known as IS, ISIS, ISIL or Daesh, recently released a video threatening Christians in the country. IS is also believed to be behind the bombing of a chapel adjoining Cairo’s St. Mark’s Cathedral in December. At least 28 people were killed.

Photo: Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra To the Clergy and Faithful Orthodox Christians of the United States of America: During this period of crisis, we, members of the Executive Committee of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America, are meeting in conference call sessions every Friday to continually monitor the COVID-19 pandemic. Together, we discuss both pastoral and practical matters concerning the operational situation of our churches. As such, allow us first to thank all the medical health professionals, first responders, delivery personnel, and clergy who put themselves on the front lines in a sacrificial manner for the protection of our health and salvation. We are facing unprecedented circumstances in extraordinary times. Many guidelines from various jurisdictions, following State and Federal regulations as well as CDC recommendations, have been successfully implemented in parishes around the country, helping to slow the spread of COVID-19. After consultation with public health and insurance officials, law enforcement, theologians, and pastoral care professionals, we, members of the Executive Committee, have reached a consensus concerning Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Pascha (Easter) and strongly encourage all Bishops of the Assembly to implement the following recommendations: Whereas some Bishops might implement more stringent practices out of love and concern for their flock and broader society, less stringent approaches will put the Faithful and their Clergy at high risk and should be avoided by all Bishops. These measures mitigate the risk of transmission due to proximity. We affirm that the Eucharist is truly the Body and truly the Blood of Christ. These measures should in no way be seen to diminish this sacred and eternal Truth. The Church presently calls upon us, as the source of blessings, to nurture us in the commandments of Christ and lead us to His Kingdom. As the Church tells us when to fast, and when not to fast, we listen and do our best to obey these instructions. In like manner, when we suffer together in our isolation and are unable even to receive the Eucharist because of mandated distancing, we are in reality, due to circumstance, also in full communion as the Body of Christ. As we unite – as faithful Christians, as a nation, and as a global community – to stop the spread of COVID-19, may the blessings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be with you all!

These visits capstone four weeks of travels, during which the sacred icon was brought to the faithful in London, Liverpool, Norwich, Cheltenham, St Leonards, Telford, Mettingham, Colchester and Oxford (in England); Cardiff and Llanelli (Wales); Montecarlo (Monaco); Cannes, Nice, Menton, Lyon, Meudon and Paris (France); Luxembourg; Sanremo and Florence (Italy); and the Resurrection Parish in Brussels (Belgium) (click the highlighted links, above, for photo-reports on the icon’s visits to each of these places). During these final days of the icon’s visit to the Diocese during Great Lent, it was taken to multiple parishes in Benelux, including the Diocese’s Parish of St Mary of Egypt in Amsterdam and our Parish of the Protection of the Mother of God (Pokrov) in Arnhem, as well as the parish of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Diocese of the Hague and Netherlands in Rotterdam. For all these visits, the wonderworking icon was accompanied by Archpriest Stefan Weerts, who had already welcomed the icon into his own parish of the Resurrection of Christ in Brussels, and who thereupon bore the sacred obedience to take the sacred icon to the faithful in these other regions, ensuring that none were left without the consolation of the presence of the Theotokos in this, her most-revered image. Fr Stefan was met at the various parishes by their local clergy, including, in Rotterdam, by His Eminence Archbishop Elisey of the Hague and the Netherlands, who eagerly brought his own flock to pray also for the consolations of God’s mother.

The Romanian Patriarchate Wants Reconciliation May 12, 2011 A press conference was held in today “Consilium” room of the Patriarchal Palace concerning the communiqué of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem of 9 May 2011, announcing the breaking up of the communion with the Romanian Patriarchate. The conference was held by His Grace Ciprian Campineanul, Assistant Bishop to the Patriarch and Secretary of the Holy Synod. A delegation made up of three hierarchs of the Romanian Orthodox Church will meet the representatives of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem for a bilateral dialogue in order to find a solution concerning the existence of the Romanian Settlement of Jericho, informs “Lumina” newspaper. The three hierarchs will be appointed next week, on 19 and 20 May, within the working session of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, when the point of view of the Romanian Patriarchate is formulated concerning the attitude of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, also presented in the communiqué of 9 May, which announced the breaking up of the communion and defrocking of Archimandrite Ieronim Creu, superior of the Romanian Settlements of Jerusalem, Jordan and Jericho. His Grace Ciprian Câmpineanul, Assistant Bishop to the Patriarch, made this announcement today, within the press conference held at the Patriarchal Palace. His Grace expressed his regret for such a unilateral decision by the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, in spite of the fact that during the preliminary discussions His Grace had at Jerusalem, on 15 April, with His Beatitude Teofil III, they agreed that an official delegation of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church should travel to Jerusalem for a dialogue designed to reach an amiable agreement concerning the existence of the Romanian Settlement of Jericho. His Grace declared, in this regard: “I would like to express once again our regret and concern for the fact that the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem reached such a decision although on 15 April 2011, before the Palm Sunday, I paid a visit to Jerusalem, delegated by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, where I met His Beatitude Teofil III of Jerusalem together with four other members of the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem and I was surprised to learn that 10 days after sending the letter of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel they had not received it yet, so that I had to hand His Beatitude Teofil III a photocopy of the answer of our Patriarch to his letter. My mission was to have preliminary discussions on the edge of the subject that makes the existence of the Romanian Settlement of Jericho in order to see how we could solve this issue in an amiable way, in the spirit of the “brotherly dialogue”, Trinitas TV informs us.

Orthodox believers celebrate Palm Sunday Photo: RIA Novosti Orthodox believers are celebrating the feast of Palm Sunday which commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, an event which according to all four canonical Gospels took place more than 2,000 years ago. The Voice of Russia’s Milena Faustova reports. The Gospels say that Jesus arrived in Jerusalem one week before his Resurrection. Father Dmitry Pershin believes, however, that there is more to this feast than recollections of biblical events. " Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem on a donkey. Jesus knew what sufferings were in store for him. As he entered Jerusalem people covered his path with palm boughs to demonstrate their reverence for the one who was doomed to die on the cross. On Palm Sunday we should welcome Jesus to reside in our souls. We should meet Him in repentance and love. Our hearts should become the very “Jerusalem” in which He would live forever. " Palm Sunday is an old tradition in Russia and in many other countries. Until the middle of the 18th century, Russian towns and villages held solemn processions which were headed by archpriests riding donkeys or horses. The animals were led by town administrators. In Moscow, the donkey carried the church primate and was led by the tsar. Palm Sunday is known as Willow Sunday in Russia. Willow goes into blossom fairly early in northern latitudes. Archpriest Vadim Leonov comments. " As Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, the celebrating people lay down palm branches in front of him. In old time, tsars were welcomed in this way. In those days, the people of Israel thought that Jesus Christ had descended on earth to restore the Kingdom of Israel and release people from Roman occupiers. The Sunday of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, which people celebrated through carpeting his path with palm branches, became known as Palm Sunday. In Russia, where the climate is unfavorable for palm, palm branches were substituted for willow boughs. "
