The fire caused considerable damage, but, thanks be to God, all are alive and no one was hurt, as reported on the Russian social media site VKontakte by a parishioner of the monastery. The sister’s housing and dairy workshop burned in addition to the church, with everything inside it. The altar table, antimens, relics of many saints, Church utensils, vestments, books, documents, and personal items were all lost, as well as winter food supplies and a refrigerator and freezer. Photo: www.vk.com The roof of the church had just been finished in the summer, including new cupolas. The founder and spiritual father of the monastery is Elder Iliy (Nozdrin) of Optina Monastery, a renowned elder in Russia today and the spiritual father to the patriarch. Donations have already been received for purchasing clothing for the nuns, bed linens, towels, and groceries. “It is a great consolation for Matushka and the sisters that there are so good people who don’t just remain on the sidelines when seeing others’ misfortunes,” writes Katerina Viktorovna on VKontakte . A new church will need to be built, as it was the only one of the monastery, and a new place for the sisters to live. Message from Metropolitan Tikhon for the Sunday of the Myrrbearing Woman Source: OCA Pravmir.com team 04 May 2020 Photo: OCA On Sunday of the Myrrhbearing Woman, His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon  addressed an Archpastoral word  to the faithful of the Orthodox Church in America in  appreciation for the frontline workers , especially those who are members of the Orthodox Church in America. Christ is Risen! Indeed, He is Risen! This 2nd Sunday after Pascha, we Orthodox Christians keep the memory of the Myrrhbearing Women who, with all piety and care, brought spices and ointments to Christ’s tomb. We remember Mary Magdalene, Mary the wife of Cleopas, Joanna, Salome, Martha and Mary of Bethany, and along with these devoted women, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. All these together, in the face of a seemingly hopeless situation, courageously did what was necessary for their Lord. In the ongoing pandemic in our society, we see similar valor, courage, and dedication among our medical and healthcare professionals, as well as among other socially-essential workers: grocery store workers, delivery drivers, factory workers, and others. Our brothers and sisters in these professions are keeping our society going, at the risk of their own health, and for this, we owe them our thanks. Like the Myrrhbearers who took care of Christ’s body, our medical professionals and other essential workers are taking care of Christ’s world, which as we know, is currently undergoing suffering. And so, we give thanks for all our brothers and sisters working in the front lines. No matter where we may find ourselves, let us offer up prayers and intercessions for them, and for their safety and strength during this time. And in offering up such prayers, may we give thanks for all that Christ has done for each of us. Let us continue forward with thanksgiving, and with hope, always bearing in mind His Resurrection! Christ is Risen! Indeed, He is Risen! Tweet Donate Share Code for blog Message from Metropolitan Tikhon for the Sunday of the Myrrbearing Woman

On 14 th  November 2019, while in Baku, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia visited the Cathedral of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women. The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church performed the Lesser Consecration of the cathedral which had undergone a large-scale restoration. Among those praying in the church were Metropolitan Pavel of Minsk and Zaslavl, Patriarchal Exarch for All Belarus; Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations; Metropolitan Vikenty of Tashkent and Uzbekistan; Metropolitan Kirill of Yekaterinburg and Verkhoturye; Archbishop Alexander of Baku and Azerbaijan; clerics of the diocese; Archimandrite Philaret (Bulekov), DECR vice-chairman; and Archpriest Andrei Bondarenko, head of the Patriarchal Protocol Service. Among those who attended the celebration were also Mr. Ya.A. Eyubov, First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan; Mr. Vladimir Legoyda, chairman of the Synodal Department for Church’s Relations with Society and Mass Media; high-ranking diplomats from Azerbaijan, Austria, Belarus, Greece, Russian Federation, and Sweden; Mr. M.Yu. Zabelin, deputy of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) and chairman of the Russian community in Azerbaijan; Mr. V.P. Denisov, head of the Rossotrudnichestvo’s Representation in the Republic of Azerbaijan and head of the Russian Information and Cultural Centre; Ms. G.Ya. Manafova, director of the Russian Cultural Centre in Azerbaijan; and numerous Orthodox citizens of the city of Baku. After the service His Holiness Patriarch Kirill delivered a Primatial homily, saying in particular: “With a special feeling I have entered this renovated church. I used to visit it earlier, but back then its appearance was very different from what we can see today. Renovating churches, we not just cover walls with paint, not just restore icons – to some extent this work testifies to the renewal of our faith. When building and restoring churches we provide our material funds and our energy. All this is our sacrifice to the Lord – that is how we need to regard all the labours which we bring to the church altar.”

In comparison to some mass media, we do not make paid subscription. It is our deepest belief that preaching Christ for money is wrong. New scholarship to benefit female students at St. Tikhon’s Seminary Source: OCA Natalya Mihailova 12 October 2014 Saint Tikhon’s Seminary here recently announced the establishment of the LuAnn Motel Scholarship Fund by the Motel family—husband Donald; sons Dr. Peter Motel, Andrew Motel, Esq. and Stephen Motel; and daughter Dr. Marta Motel Grewell—in loving memory of their wife and mother LuAnn. According to Archpriest Dennis Swencki, Seminary CFO and Development Director, the scholarship will aid one or more female students enrolled in the Master of Divinity Program at Saint Tikhon’s. LuAnn’s life was a living tribute to the service of others in her Church life, as one of the founding members and later warden of Saint Herman’s Church, Gradyville, PA, as well as in her professional life as an oncology nurse at Philadelphia’s Hahnemann Hospital.  What set her apart, much like the Myrrhbearing Women, was her incredible strength and lack of fear, regardless of the cross laid before her.  She was an inspiration to all who knew her, and the establishment of this scholarship fund in her memory is a true testimony of the incredible love and respect of her family, who will continue to honor her by helping others complete their seminary studies and go on to serve the Church. Initial funding of this scholarship of has been given by the Motel Family.  “Anyone may contribute to this fund, and even the smallest gift will allow us to continue to help our female students and encourage more to consider attending the seminary,” Father Dennis added. The Myrrhbearing Women and the Christian Women of Today The younger girls and daughters can bring mirth to our Lord Jesus Christ their clean life, their virginity, prayer and obedience to thier parents. All (college) students and young women, who come to church regularly, can also bring to Christ our Saviour their mirth of good fragrance: the zeal for good deeds, mercy and charity towards those in suffering and obedience to their spiritual father. As you know, the third Sunday after Easter is the Sunday of the Myrrhbearing women, or the Sunday of the faithful and the housewives who maintain the Christian family in this world. You should be happy that you partake of this special attention from our Resurrected Lord. And behold, because through our most pure Mother Theotokos and the Holy Myrrh-bearing women, you have a Sunday a year, when you are especially honored. May the Lord multiply in you the grace and gifts of the Holy Spirit and may the gift of Christian love abide truly with you, in order to be what you are called, maintainers of Christian’   warmth and harmony in your family. For many families today are met with disaster… as you know better than me, so I will not speak about it. Then, those of you (faithful women) who come to church and pray to the Lord here (in the church) and in your home, if you pray attentively with love, humility and perseverance,  will always receive help from God and you will be comforted in your troubles. As we’ve talked today about the Sunday of the Holy Myrrhbearing women, do not forget that all of you Orthodox Christian women and your daughters are called to be the Holy Myrrhbearing women of the Orthodox Church today and forever. The younger girls and daughters can bring mirth to our Lord Jesus Christ their clean life, their virginity, prayer and obedience to thier parents. But also the older mothers, the grandmothers and widows that are always present in the holy churches of God, may bring their ointment of tears and prayers as they piously keep the Orthodox faith and legacy passed on by our ancestors.

Sermon on the Sunday of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women Now, we know the triumph of Christ. We know the end of the story. We know this even as we walk with these women to the tomb, as they despair, hopeless. Yet still in our lives, we also may deal with despair. Why am I stuck in this job? Why can " t I pay my bills? Why can " t I be patient with my children? Why do I feel so alone? When we are abandoned, when we try to follow God " s will but can " t see the way, when we lose someone or something we don " t think we can live without, when we suffer, perhaps that is when we experience Christ as dead. 11 May 2008 Source: St. Mary Orthodox Church Delivered on the Sunday of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women at St. Mary Orthodox Church, Cambridge, MA Sunday, April 25, 2004 In today’s Gospel, we revisit the tomb as Joseph provides for Christ’s burial and the myrrhbearing women come to anoint Christ’s body with spices and oils, only to discover that the tomb is empty. They run from the garden, the Bible tells us, “amazed and bewildered.” Now, we’ve walked through the repentance and preparation of fifty days of Lent. We prayed and worshipped through the intensity of Holy Week that erupted into the Joy and triumph of Pascha, proclaiming that Christ through His death has trampled down death, and we’ve experienced the celebration and lightness of Bright Week. Why now, then, does the Church return to the tomb? Let’s take a closer look. We find these women watching as Joseph takes Christ’s body down from the cross. They have followed Jesus through his passion, witnessing that he was tried and crucified. They have watched as Joseph of Arimathea stepped up and gave Jesus a proper burial in his own tomb. They have seen the stone sealing the tomb. These women loved Jesus, and now they grieve for the loss of their beloved leader. All hope is lost. He is gone. Yet even in the face of hopelessness, these women act. They buy ointments that will help his body dry out as it decays, and sweet spices so that even in death, his body is honored. Their actions show their steadfast love for Christ, that even after hope is shattered, they go the extra mile to honor Jesus. Such is their love for this dead man.

Tweet Нравится The Bravery and Courage of the Myrrhbearing Women Archimandrite Cleopa (Ilie)      Among the great virtues adorning the lives of the holy Myrrhbearing Women , the most striking were their holy zeal for Christ, their reverence, and their courage of soul. The Jews and Pilate placed a protection and fortification at the Tomb of Christ, our Savior, that His disciples could not come by night and steal Him! They rolled a huge stone up against the Lord’s Tomb, sealed it off, and placed strong and armed soldiers on watch. But all of this did not scare or frighten the holy Myrrhbearing Women. Their great zeal, sacred reverence, and courage of soul passed over all the Jews’ obstacles, and all the guards at the Tomb did not shake their resolve. But one thought, but one desire led their minds and hearts— to serve the funeral of their dear Savior with fullness of faith and with reverence. Solomon once said, One man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found (Ecc. 7:28). And here are woman who are more brave than men. Men, the disciples of Christ, were hiding from fear of the Jews. Peter, fervent and firm in faith, thrice denied the Lord, of which he then repented and bitterly wept (cf. Lk. 22:62). But women, by nature timid and weak and often afraid even when there is no danger, here, at the service of the burial of our Most Holy Savior, turned out to be stronger and braver than men. They were not afraid of the Jews’ wrath or the brutality of the soldiers, and the guard at the Lord’s Tomb also did not agitate their hearts. The disciples, men, affrighted and disbanded in all directions, as the Savior had predicted to them beforehand. But the holy women gathered themselves. The men were hiding, but the women went out in the light of day, heading to the market and buying myrrh and spices to anoint the Life-bearing Body of Christ. O, blessed women, how were you not afraid to go out alone at night, and how did you dare to approach that place guarded by royal soldiers, and how did you not fear, but strove to roll away the stone, break the seal, open the tomb and anoint the Body of the Lord with spices? These ascetic feats sprang from the zeal, reverence, and great bravery of your souls.
