Пророчество Иеремии, когда оно было первоначально дано, по-видимому, было обращено к другому событию, но в некотором смысле его можно считать пророчеством о Христе. Это соответствует приемлемому методу рассуждения, используемому евреями в то время. Интересно отметить, что Эдершайм говорит о разумности использования цитаты Иеремии 31:15 в Евангелии от Матфея: «Вдохновленному писателю, а точнее, вдохновленному еврейскому читателю Ветхого Завета вопрос в отношении любого пророчества не может стоять таким образом: “Что имел в виду пророк ?”, но, “Что значило это пророчество ?”» (1883:215).
