The Kingdom of God is at Hand In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit! Today we celebrate the memory of the Holy Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist Johnthe first and second findings of his head. Therefore the Gospel reading that we just heard is also dedicated to the Prophet and Forerunner John. The Lord said about him that no one born of women is greater than John the Baptist (cf. Matthew 11:11), for which reason he is also first among the ranks of saints. John was the Forerunner of the Savior; he softened the hearts of men, that they might be ready to accept the word of the Savior; John the Forerunner’s preaching was one of repentance (cf. Matthew 3:2). It was with these very words about repentance and the Kingdom of God that Christ the Savior began speaking His word to the people: Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matthew 4:17).

Kushiner 11 September 2010 Fornication Leads To Murder Source:  Touchstone Magazine – Mere Comments     August 29, 2005 In the Eastern Church calendar, today, August 29, is observed as a strict fast in memory of the beheading of John the Baptist. (The date is also marked in Western calendars as the death of John.) My own parish, like many smaller parishes, does not observe this commemoration liturgically unless it happens to fall on a Sunday, as it did last year.

The Rite of the Churching of an infant who has been baptized is the solemn act of bringing the child into the Church, and offering them to God. Baptisms are now often done inside the Nave of the Church, but historically, baptisms were either done outside (in a flowing river or lake), or in a baptistery that might be separate from the Church altogether, or which is located in the Narthex of the Church. And so, historically, after the Baptism concluded, the newly baptized was brought into the Nave for the first time.

St. Matthew and St. Mark note that this took place after John’s imprisonment, while St. John adds that the reason for this was the rumor that Jesus was acquiring and baptizing more disciples than John the Baptist, although the Evangelist explains that it was not He Himself Who was baptizing them, but His disciples. After John’s imprisonment, the Pharisees’ entire hostility focused on Jesus, Who began to seem to them more dangerous than the Baptist. Since the time of His suffering had not yet arrived, Jesus leaves Judea and goes to Galilee, in order to avoid persecution by His envious opponents. Only one Evangelist, St. John, tells the story of Christ’s conversation with the Samaritan woman that occurred on the way to Galilee.

Witness in Judea, Samaria, and Galilee True Purification. 2:1-25 The Witness of the First Disciples. 1:19–51 ALTHOUGH THE GOSPEL " S NARRATIVE opens with 1:19, the implied reader knows Jesus» origin from 1:1–18 (and most of John " s earliest audience probably were already Christians; see introduction). That the narrative can open abruptly after the prologue (especially the preparation of 1:6–8,15) is to be expected, and a Diaspora audience conditioned by Mediterranean dramatic culture would feel at home here. Greek dramas often started by informing the viewer of what had happened prior to the opening of the play. The Odyssey opens abruptly and afterwards explains more of Odysseus " s travels through flashbacks, but its hearers could also presuppose what they knew of Odysseus from stories about him in the Iliad (if they knew that work first; probably they heard both repeatedly). The prologue introduces John the Baptist as a model witness for Jesus, leading immediately into a section (1:19–51) about the nature of witness and disciple-making for Jesus, which John the Baptist (1:19–28) opens. 3790 Apart from the prologue, the evangelist starts his Gospel essentially where Mark did and early Christian evangelists often did (Acts 1:22; 10:37; 13:24). 3791 This witness also fits the Gospel " s specifically Jewish framework by opening with a witness to Israel (1:31,49) embraced by true Israelites (1:47). 3792 The writer of the Fourth Gospel wishes his audience not only to continue in the faith themselves (20:31), but to join him in openly confessing Christ (12:42–43), proclaiming him in a hostile world (15:26–27).

Multimedia Contact us Искать Искать The Ascetic Life Source: Pemptousia Bishop Agathangelos of Fanari 12 April 2016 Asceticism in the Orthodox Church For the secular people of today, focusing on an ascetic saint represents a problem. How can the ascetic figure of Saint John, the author of the Ladder, speak to us, when he acquired and preserved the Grace of God through tears, prayers, and spiritual asceticism? In Orthodox teaching, the ascetic life is nothing other than the transcendence of selfishness, the attempt, in Grace, to apply God’s commandments, to live the life of Jesus Christ. The Orthodox ethos is ascetic. The objection made by people today- that an ascetic cannot speak to us- is not true for two fundamental reasons. In the first place, because in Orthodox Patristic teaching, there’s no difference between the monastic and secular way of life, nor between the married and unmarried. The difference is simply between those people who have the Holy Spirit and those who don’t. Secondly, because the way of life as described in the Holy Scriptures and as experienced by the saints, is ascetic. The commands to ‘struggle to enter through the narrow gate’, ‘the Kingdom of Heaven is to be forced and the violent seize it’ and ‘mortify your members on the earth’ are universally and comprehensively valid. They apply to everyone, irrespective of where we live and how. Because the salvation perfected by Christ is offered to everyone baptized ‘in the name of the life-giving and divine Trinity’ and so the path to salvation is the same for all of us.
