Some parishioners and the rector managed to enter the territory; the others were barred out by the police. People in camouflage shoved Fr Yevgeny over, and the police took him to an undisclosed location. According to mass media, he cannot be reached at the moment. The parishioners cannot enter the church because some raiders closed themselves inside. The invaders are trying to provoke clashes by posting on social media that the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church do not let them out and asking their supporters to come to their aid. Patriarch Kirill noted that in spite of the fact that the Russian Orthodox clergymen had left China, they had made their mark in the spiritual life of the country. “Their work resulted in the establishment of the Chinese Orthodox Church, with her bishops and clergymen. Up to 1960s, the Chinese Church united thousands of the faithful,” His Holiness said. The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church recalled his first visit to the Russian Embassy in Beijing in 1993, saying: “Since then the restoration of the Church of the Assumption has begun. We worked together with our Chinese colleagues, representatives of the Administration for Religious Affairs, and our joint work has resulted in the restoration of the Church which we all can now look at with admiration.” “We are deeply convinced that the restoration of the Chinese Orthodox Church is also a very important task, which should be a matter of our common reflection and joint work,” His Holiness said, noting that the process should be based on the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China and be in compliance with Chinese laws. Patriarch Kirill emphasized that everyone he had discussed the issue with had expressed that point of view. His Holiness Patriarch Kirill expressed his confidence that the relationships between China and Russia, as well as Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova (these countries form the canonical territory of the Russian Orthodox Church) would develop. His Holiness said, in particular: “I am deeply convinced that this cooperation is called strategic not for nothing, as the prosperity of our countries and well-being of our people depend on it.” After the reception, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, accompanied by Mr. Andrey Denisov, Russian Ambassador to China, and by the members of the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church, visited the Church of the Assumption and appreciated the results of its restoration. His Holiness visited the museum of the Russian Orthodox Mission in China, located in building of the Church, and shared his recollections of Metropolitan Viktor (Sviatin), head of the 20 th  Russian Orthodox Mission in China.

His Holiness made a positive assessment of the exchange of experience accumulated by ecclesial specialists working in the social sphere as well as the development of interaction between the two Churches in academic cooperation. At present, a multitude of initiatives are being implemented in students and professors exchanges, common participation in issue conferences and contacts on the level of library stocks and schools for precentors and icon-painters. ‘Our theological schools are ready to continue enrolling students from the Coptic Church’ His Holiness said, ‘It is known that a considerable number of students from Egypt, with Copts among them, are studying in Russian secular high education institutes. They also study in our universities. There are in total about 700 young Egyptian Christians who study today in various educational institutions of the Russian Federation’. His Holiness noted that each Coptic student who comes to Russia needs to feel care on the part of the Russian Orthodox Church, ‘In this connection, I have instructed local dioceses to invite them to meet with their ruling bishops and to get them to take part in youth activities. This year, there have been a great number of such activities in many dioceses of the Russian Church’. His Holiness put a special stress on the need to resume the work of the Joint Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Orthodox Church and Oriental Churches and to continue bilateral theological consultations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Coptic Church. His Holiness asked to convey the best wished to His Holiness Coptic Patriarch Tawadros II, who this year marks his 70 th birthday and the 10 th anniversary of his election to the Patriarchal See. ‘I think our next meeting during the bilateral dialogue could do even more effective our joint movement to meet halfway’, said the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church. In his response, Metropolitan Serapion of Los Angeles thanked His Holiness Patriarch Kirill for the hospitality and conveyed to him best wishes from His Holiness Coptic Patriarch Tawadros II.

Also present at the reception were representatives of clergy, who concelebrated with His Holiness Patriarch Kirill at the liturgy. The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church cordially greeted His Holiness Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, stressing that the relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Malankara Church have deep historical roots. “Together we belong to the great spiritual tradition of the Christian East. The relations between our Churches made good progress, thanks to such history-making figures as Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov) of Leningrad and Novgorod and Metropolitan Paulos Mar Gregorios (Varghese), an outstanding hierarch and theologian”, His Holiness said addressing the high guest. Patriarch Kirill recalled that he first met Metropolitan Mar Gregorios in 1968 in Uppsala at the Fourth General Assembly of the World Council of Churches. “Already back then he proved to be an outstanding theologian and religious leader. To me, especially memorable was his contribution to the work of the Fifth General Assembly which took place in 1975 in Nairobi”, His Holiness pointed out, stressing that the relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Malankara Church have been actively growing ever since. His Holiness highly praised the brotherly relations which have always been there between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Church of India. His Holiness also expressed hope that the bilateral cooperation between the two Churches will progress successfully in the future. “We value our common past which has enriched both of our Churches, but we would like to see the present and the future to be no less meaningful for our Churches”, Patriarch Kirill added, “And, of course, we are open to many kinds of common work, among them I would like to repeat my invitation for your students to be trained in our schools”. The Primate of the Russian Church also pointed out the high level inter-state relations between Russia and India. “Russia and India are civilizations of great culture, with enormous intellectual, human and cultural potential. Russia and India today are are real partners who do not seek to profit fr om each other, nor seek to exploit each other’s weaknesses, but interact in policies and economy in total honesty. That is why we have a positive factor for development, including bilateral religious relations”, Patriarch Kirill stated.

In this regard, mentioning the latest developments in Syria, His Holiness also said, “The United States and Russia have never before been in such close contact in the territory where both sides are involved in the hostilities. I had a feeling that we were approaching a very dangerous moment in history, because even an accidental collision of the two powers could lead to a nuclear war which would destroy the human civilization. Then I decided to come into contact with Pope Francis. We agreed to meet. I believe that the declaration that we signed is of great importance.” His Holiness Patriarch Kirill expressed his opinion that the Christian Churches and communities must combine their efforts to work out common approaches to the problem of terrorism and, in particular, to such terrible phenomenon as genocide of the Christian population. During the meeting, His Holiness also raised the topic of theological dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Oriental Churches and the bilateral relations between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, such as church-society relations, social ministry, diaconia, and missionary activities. “It would also be beneficial to revive contacts between our theological educational institutions,” His Holiness added, “We are ready to invite your students to study in Russia.” His Holiness Patriarch and Catholicos Abune Mathias I thanked His Holiness Patriarch Kirill for the invitation to visit the Russian Church and for the warm hospitality and noted that his visit was aimed at intensifying relationships between the two Churches. Patriarch and Catholicos Abune Mathias expressed his interest in promoting cooperation in the educational sphere. As he noted, many Ethiopian students studied in Russia, and some of them later became bishops and archbishops, performing their archpastoral ministry in Ethiopia. The head of the Ethiopian Church’s delegation told about the difficult situation of the African Churches, with extremists attacking church buildings, and with terrorists killing people, both Christians and Muslims who refuse to accept their ideology.
