Greek media: “Orthodoxy for the USA is like a red flag to a bull” Athens, May 22, 2015 An anti-Church campaign is continuing in Greece. It flared up after the holy relics of Great Martyr Barbara had been brought to the country. Some who follow the media closely are positive that the campaign is financed by the USA. Bringing of St. Barbara’s relics: photo by lifo.gr.      “For the USA, Orthodoxy is like a red flag to a bull… This is because Orthodox peoples are friendly towards Russia. That is why in Greece in every way – through media and Non-Governmental Organizations controlled by the USA – godlessness is being promoted and the faith ridiculed. The huge influx of the faithful to the relics of St. Barbara has startled the West and caused the intensification of this propaganda,” experts of the Defencenet.gr Greek portal are convinced, reports AgionOros. Bringing of St. Barbara’s relics: photo by lifo.gr.      It should be noted that St. Barbara’s relics, which are permanently kept at the San Marco Basilica of Venice, were brought to Greece, and this caused a wave of negative publications in the liberal media. The event has already been called “unprecedented”. Bringing of St. Barbara’s relics: photo by lifo.gr.      “When we received the saint’s relics we could not imagine this enormous wave of pilgrimages to the shrine. Masses of people during the course of eight days… The fact that pilgrims are willing to queue for hours in order to venerate the precious relics of Greatmartyr Barbara arouses a bottomless depth of amazement and respect,” said Metropolitan Clement of Methoni. Bringing of St. Barbara’s relics: photo by lifo.gr.      In his turn, Metropolitan Anthimos of Thessaloniki has commented on the anti-Church campaign in the Greek liberal media: “Some individuals are speaking with shallow, deceitful, unfounded fabrications, thus trying to create conditions for weakening of the Orthodox Church”. Bringing of St. Barbara’s relics: photo by lifo.gr.      In Metropolitan Anthimos’ view, the actions of the enemies of the Church intended for its division are hopeless: “Yes, our opinions on national interests often differ, but when representatives of Local Orthodox Churches gather together, they (whether they are Greeks, Russians, Ukrainians, other European citizens or Americans) find common language and bear witness to the Truth”.

Archbishop Demetrios Presides over Consecration of Saint Sophia Cathedral in the Nation’s Capital Source: Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America Natalya Mihailova 13 May 2015 May 11, 2015. WASHINGTON – The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sophia in the Nation’s Capital was consecrated yesterday, Sunday, May 10, 2015, with His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America presiding and more than a thousand people in attendance. Photo by Dimitrios Panagos/GOA The Order of the Consecration began in the morning following the Orthros (Matins) with the procession of the holy relics that circled three times around the Church. The relics used for the Consecration were of the holy great martyr St. Barbara, the great martyr and healer, St. Panteleimon, and the holy child martyr St. Kyrikos. The Archbishop raised and held high the covered silver platen with the holy relics as he walked around the church.  Altar boys holding candles and icons, the choir of chanters chanting Glory to You, our God, glory to You, the clergy bearing the sacred Cross and the Gospel book preceded the procession. The faithful followed. After the readings of the Epistles and Gospels, Archbishop Demetrios together with His Grace Bishop Andonios of Phasiane tapped the front doors of the church with the episcopal staff and with a loud voice exclaimed: “Lift up the gates, O you rulers, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors and the King of glory shall enter.” Upon entering the church, the Archbishop set the silver platen with the holy relics upon the holy altar table, ceremonially placed them in a small silver container and poured holy myrrh in it. He then deposited the silver container into the prepared reliquary cavity atop the holy altar table and poured liquid wax and mastic, sealing the cavity with a piece of marble and the wax mixture. At that point, Archbishop Demetrios and Bishop Andonios put on a white linen garment over their vestments, and kneeling down along with the clergy and the faithful offered the prayers of consecration. They washed with soap and water and anointed the holy altar table with holy myrrh. The holy table was then wiped dry with the antimensia and four linen icons depicting the four evangelists were affixed with wax on the four corners. The Archbishop then spread upon the altar table a white linen cloth katasarkion (burial shroud) and signed it. Bishop Andonios signed it as well. They vested the altar table with a new and bright cover, placed the antimension on top and then top of that the holy Gospel. They also placed upon the holy table the artophorion and the other liturgical items. Just before the conclusion of the Order of the Consecration, Archbishop Demetrios and Bishop Andonios using a sponge anointed with holy myrrh the whole sanctuary including the icons and the mosaics on the walls.

Abbess Ekaterina’s Last Communion Nicholai Solntsev On icons of Great Martyr Barbara, the saint is often depicted with the Chalice in her hands. In the prayer, we ask the saint to grant us a “Christian end to our life—painless, blameless, peaceful, with Communion of the Holy Mysteries…” Truly, the saint often manifests miracles and comes with the Chalice to commune the dying. The story about how in the difficult soviet years, Saint Barbara came to conduct Abbess Ekaterina on her final journey has been passed down orally in the family of Archpriest Pavel Ilarionovich Milovanov (1923-1991), rector of the St. Nicholas Cathedral in the city of Alma-Ata, and father confessor of the Kazakhstan metropolia. Archpriest Pavel Milovanov. The future Abbess Ekaterina, in the world, Eudocia Yakovlevna Ivaniuk, was a relative of Fr. Pavel Milovanov through his wife. She was born in 1867 in the village of Dorotinka, Grodny province. When she turned twenty she entered the Lesna Convent of the Mother of God in the Kholm-Warsaw diocese. This was an unusual monastery. It was founded with the blessing of St. Ambrose of Optina, and was under the spiritual guidance of St. John of Kronstadt. St. Ambrose of Optina, an experienced guide in women’s monastic ascetic labors, compiled a cell rule for the Lesna sisters that is used in that monastery even today. The monastery was headed by Abbess Ekaterina (Ephimovskaya—now glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia), an advocate of socially active monasticism. Her disciples founded and lead monasteries in the outlying areas of Russia, opened schools, visited hospitals, organized industries, and gave medical help to the local populations. After the Russian revolution, when the sisters moved to Serbia, they renewed women’s monasticism there. Now this monastery is located in France, striving to preserve all the traditions given it by its foundress. Abbess Ekaterina’s commandments were to “be a servant to all,” and “more action, less self-love,” among others.

On Sunday, May 20, 2018, Minsk Theological Academy in Belarus hosted a round table called “Preserving Orthodoxy in the Modern World.” The event brought together young Orthodox Christians of Minsk and their counterparts from the Russian diaspora in the US, headed by Protopriest Andrei Sommer, Vice President of the Synodal Youth Department of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. The visiting youth arrived in the capital of Belarus with a reliquary containing the right hand of Holy Grand Martyr Elizabeth and Holy Nun Varvara from the Synodal Cathedral of Our Lady “of the Sign” in New York City. His Eminence Metropolitan Pavel of Minsk and Zaslavl’, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus, ceremoniously welcomed the relics and delegation at Holy Spirit Cathedral. Protopriest Ioann Zadorozhin, President of the Synodal Youth Department of the Belarussian Orthodox Church, opened the event by introducing the visitors and outlining the great spiritual feats of SS Elizabeth and Barbara. Before the calamity of the Revolution, the internecine war and the collapse of traditional values in society, these holy ascetic women remained devoted to their calling, serving God and neighbor, manifesting works of kindness in the name of Christ, explained Fr Ioann. Fr Andrei talked about youth ministry in the USA, saying that characteristic of today’s “Generation Z” are a lack of church life and agnosticism. The post-Christian youth of the early 21st century, as a rule, might in fact acknowledge the existence of God or of a supernatural world, but they reject the Church, Her Mysteries and rituals. At the same time, this generation is active, dynamic, seeks to change the world and help people. Continuing on this topic, Fr Andrei said that today’s youth are “a separate nation,” with their own language and culture, and a missionary preaching Christ to this “nation” must master their forms of communication. The new generation communicates in soundbites, eschews reading long texts, uses photos, stickers and emojis to express their thoughts and feelings. A missionary among the young must take this into account.

Right hand of Grand Duchess Elizabeth the New Martyr arrives in St. Petersburg from NYC Moscow, May 5, 2017 Photo: mitropolia.spb.ru      A reliquary with the right hand of the holy New Martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna arrived in St. Petersburg today. The reliquary, which also contains relics of the holy New Martyr Nun Barbara, was brought from the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York by chairman of the ROCOR Synodal Youth Department Archpriest Andrei Sommer, reports the site of the St. Petersburg Diocese. The relics are visiting Russia by the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion (Kapral), first hierarch of ROCOR, and Metropolitan Barsanuphius of St. Petersburg and Ladoga. Photo: mitropolia.spb.ru      The reliquary was greeted at the airport by Bishop Nazary of Kronstadt and clergy of the St. Petersburg Diocese and then taken to the St. Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg. A moleben was celebrated before the relics in the lavra’s Holy Trinity Cathedral, after which all gathered had the opportunity to venerate the relics. “One hundred years ago in our glorious city the revolution began,” said Bishop Nazary. “Many people still welcome it as an achievement, and this means that atonement has not yet arrived in our society. I’m more inclined to call this event the great disaster that befell not only Russia within its present limits, but the whole territory of the Russian Empire,” he stressed. “This revolution marked the beginning of the division. The only positive value of these events is that the patriarchate was restored in Russia.” The archbishop called upon all present to contemplate the sad event of a century ago, and to pray to God and the martyrs to prevent such a thing from ever happening again. Photo: mitropolia.spb.ru      The full relics of Sts. Elizabeth and Barbara are housed in the St. Mary Magdalene Monastery in the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem. St. Elizabeth’s relics were taken from Alapaevsk, Russia through Shanghai to Jerusalem, where she desired to be buried, in 1918. Her right hand was transferred to the United States after her 1981 canonization by ROCOR. The sacred relics will remain at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the St. Alexander Nevsky Lavra from May 5 to 9, and at the Cathedral of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God in memory of the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov from May 9 to 11. 5 мая 2017 г. скрыть способы оплаты скрыть способы оплаты Смотри также Комментарии Подпишитесь на рассылку Православие.Ru Рассылка выходит два раза в неделю: Мы в соцсетях Подпишитесь на нашу рассылку
