More problematic is the fact that Orthodox Christians do so little reading of the Bible at home (there are exceptions, just enough to prove the rule). They have no idea of the context of a prescribed passage from the Epistles, to the point that the reading is little more than liturgical trappings, devoid of meaning other than as a long and cumbersome way into the Gospel. Archpriest John Breck 08 April 2011 March 2010 Reading of the Epistles People will persist in dysfunctional patterns of behavior simply because they’re familiar. A woman who divorces an abusive alcoholic husband will be very likely later on to marry someone with a similar addiction. The “good ol’ boys” will continue to tie one on Saturday nights, even though the Sunday morning hangover is inevitably excruciating. A parishioner (only the Orthodox are guilty of this, it seems) who habitually arrives at the Sunday Liturgy after the Lesser Entrance and still wants to receive communion will respond to the priest’s protests, “But we’ve always done it that way, Father!”

(18:10-14)  We continue on the march towards Great Lent. We are like soldiers who are drawing near to the front lines of the battlefield. The Church is preparing us for spiritual battle because Lent is a great spiritual battle. As we draw near to the battlefield, we are given special gospel readings to aid in our preparation. The Church like a wise general is foreshadowing the moves and the tactics of the enemy and is giving us the counterattacks. Each week is a new building block, a new tactic or weapon that we will add to our repertoire.

Sometimes the stories seem to imply that these saintly men and women never doubted their faith. How could someone who is at such a lofty plain ever have doubts about their faith? But, could this be true? Fr. Paul Stoll 24 May 2011 When we contemplate the lives of the saints, we are sometimes inclined to ask, what sustained them amidst the distractions of their lives? How could these men and women remain in a state of communion of with God? How could they continually center their thoughts, prayers and contemplations on Jesus Christ?

This, however, has not always been the case: for many years they were vilified both in Russia and in parts of the Russian émigré community (as they continue to be by some contemporary historians). This should be borne in mind when reading the following sermon, given by St. John (Maximovitch), then Bishop of Shanghai, on the anniversary of the martyrdom of the Royal Family in 1934, nearly half a century before the Royal Family was glorified by the Church Abroad and close to three-quarters of a century before their glorification by the Church in Russia. St. John’s words would have sounded anything but commonplace at the time he delivered them.

Cookie policy Address by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, to the 19th International Educational Christmas Readings Your Eminences and Graces, Dear Fathers, Brothers and Sisters, The Christmas Readings have become today a large-scale forum which enables representatives of both church and state to discuss very serious and significant problems. The discussions involve the mass media and reach out to a large audience. The theme of the Readings this year is ‘Church and State: Cooperation of Tackling Common Tasks.’ It makes us to think about very many things. On the one hand, we can state with certainty that relations between state and church in Russia and in a number of other countries in the post-Soviet space have developed in a good and constructive vein making it possible to take common efforts for improving people’s life. At the same time, it has to be admitted that we are to do perhaps much more than we have already done. It concerns in particular the sphere of human life which involves moral issues. We should think over the educational mission that the Church is called to carry out and the importance of the Church’s witness of the eternal truth of God and moral values before people. Ethical issues acquire a special importance today in the concern for family ethics. In their addresses to this forum, participants have already touched upon the unfortunate situation which has developed in the social sphere in Russia and to this or that extent in other countries of the near abroad. This situation is a direct consequence of the erosion which has affected the traditional family way of life in the last decades. With regard to Russia it should be noted that it was the 1917 Revolution that dealt the first blow to this way of life. Then there were 70 years of atheism followed by 20 years of democracy entailing the imposition of the ideology of consumer society in our countries. Among the consequences is a terrible statistics reflecting an enormous number of abortions in our country and in the near abroad. It is a legitimized crime which takes away millions of lives.

Craig S. Keener Revelation of Jesus. 16:5–33 ALTHOUGH A GRADUAL SHIFT takes place from the emphasis on persecution in 16:1–4, there is no decisive break here with the preceding context. When Jesus was with the disciples, they did not need warning about future sufferings (16:5), presumably because he would protect them (18:8–9). But now that he was going and their hearts were burdened with sorrow (16:6), he had to assure them that the Paraclete would continue to reveal him to them and through them (16:7–15). He had warned them of coming sufferings (15:18–16:4), but they could not bear further revelation of such matters now (16:12); when the Paraclete would come, however, he would prepare them for the rest, telling them more things to come (16:13), presumably including events such as those narrated in the book of Revelation (if, as we have argued, John and Revelation reflect the same community). The coming of the Paraclete would enable the disciples to go on the offensive (15:26–27) because through him Jesus would remain among them (16:13–15). In him they would have victory over the world, despite their tribulation (16:33). His Departure for Their Good (16:5–7) In the context of the disciples» discouragement due to the world " s hostility (16:1–6), the Paraclete would come to prosecute the world (16:8–11). The disciples could be strong in the face of persecution, despite Jesus» absence, because the Paraclete would be with them (v. 7); this suggests that the Paracletés prosecution of the world is on their behalf and through their testimony. 9191 They grieved that Jesus was «going» (16:5–6), but resurrection joy would soon swallow their grief concerning the cross (16:22; cf. 1Рет 1:6 ). 9192 Jesus» return would provide them the Spirit, who would continue Jesus» presence with them. Because of their grief (16:6), Jesus assures them emphatically («I tell you the truth») 9193 that they will be better off with him departing to send them the other advocate he has mentioned (14:16). 9194 The Paraclete is better for them than Jesus in the flesh would have been (16:7) because he re-presents Jesus dynamically to the world in each hostile situation. Jesus had also challenged the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment, and the prophetic Spirit, proclaiming the same Jesus through his community, would continue the challenge. 9195 This continuity between the two should not be understood as identity, as in the docetic reading of John, 9196 nor even to imply that the Spirit cannot bring new teachings; 9197 the Spirit will say some new things (16:12–13) but in continuity with Jesus» revelation. 9198 But it does mean that Jesus himself is present in the Spirit, though only those in his community recognize his presence. 9199 The World " s Prosecutor (16:8–11)
