They are being assisted in this by a group of Orthodox clergy, laity, and scholar. Eastern University’s webpage states: “The Institute will serve as an intellectual and spiritual home for Orthodox students and scholars, exploring the Greek, Arabic, and Slavic Orthodox traditions through their literature, thought, philosophy, theology, history, art, and music. “The Institute will offer a minor in Orthodox thought and culture, taught within the broader context of a Christ-centered education in the arts and sciences. A program unlike anything else in the country, the Institute will work with Eastern University's existing academic structures, providing students a vibrant university experience at an accredited and stable institution with a strong Orthodox component, an interdisciplinary program with broad appeal to all Eastern Christians. “The Institute will also provide the introductory courses that fulfill some of Eastern's general education curriculum, in particular the Old Testament, New Testament, and Theology courses. Axion Estin offers Byzantine Music course at St. Vladimir’s Seminary December 17, 2014 In collaboration with The Axion Estin Foundation of New Rochelle, NY, Saint Vladimir’s Seminary here will be offering a public Continuing Education course on Byzantine Chant during the spring 2015 semester. The course will be offered under the expert instruction of Eleftherios Eleftheriadis, the Foundation’s inaugural Artist in Residence and the highly regarded Protopsaltis of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Shrine, Flushing, NY. He previously had served on the faculty of the Music School of Thessaloniki, Greece. The course—open to the general public as well as seminarians—will be held Tuesday evenings, beginning February 3, 2015, on the seminary campus. The Beginner Class will meet from 6:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., while the Advanced Class will meet from 8:10 p.m. to 9:25 p.m. Classes will be conducted in Greek, with translation, and course materials include original music texts in Byzantine notation and the Greek language. Wonderworking Icon from Romania’s Sihstria Monastery Carried in Procession against Coronavirus and Drought Source: Basilica.ro On Bright Tuesday, the wonderworking Axion Estin (It is Truly Meet) Icon of the Mother of God from Romania’s famous Sihstria Monastery was carried in procession, with the monks entreating God for relief from the coronavirus pandemic and drought.  The procession took place after the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, with the monks stopping at six points to offer prayers and litanies for the driving away of the pandemic, the healing of the sick, and for rain. The procession began and ended at the monastery cathedral, with stops at the cemetery, the agricultural fields, the cell of the greatly-revered Elder Cleopa (Ilie), the guesthouse, and the old church. The holy march was held, “To ask for God’s help and the mercy of the Mother of God in order to get through these difficult times, to get out of this state of sorrow, to pray more together, and to get out of the monotony of the present situation through a more intense prayer, with more hope,” explained the abbot, Archimandrite Arsenie Popa. The Sihstria Axion Estin Icon was painted by a Romanian monk on Mt. Athos in the early 20th century. It is normally housed in the nave of the old church at the monastery. A Song of Repentance: the Great Canon of St Andrew of Crete The Monastery of Axion Estin Photo: V.Kornjushin/Pravoslavie.ru      SOURCE: The Monastery of Axion Estin Introduction The experience of Lent is a spiritual journey whose purpose is to transfer us from one spiritual state to another, a dynamic passage. For this reason the church commences Lent with the great penitential Canon of St Andrew of Crete. This penitential lamentation conveys to us the scope and depth of sin, shaking the soul with despair, repentance, and hope. The only times it is appointed to be read in church are the first four nights of great Lent (clean Monday through to clean Thursday, and fourth sections of each ode are read at great compline) and at Matins for Thursday of the fifth week of great Lent, when it is read in its entirety (in this latter service, the entire life of St Mary of Egypt is also read). This complex poem (actually a chanted hymn) was written in the early 700's, and it picked up the adjective " great " for two reasons: it is extra-long (about 250 verses), and it is majestic. It is a liturgical poem consisting of nine odes. The great Canon was written by St. Andrew of Crete, a bishop who was initially a monk in Jerusalem. The whole Canon is a kind of " Walk Through the Bible " . St. Andrew begins with Adam and Eve and goes all the way through, exhorting himself by applying the stories and characters of the Bible. Reading the Canon helps us see how Christians in the Holy Land, 1,300 years ago, understood the Scriptures. It is a way to time-travel, and actually joins them in these ancient Christian devotions which are part of the dynamic life of the church. Father Alexander Schmemann says about the ‘great Canon of repentance’ that: " ...with a unique art, St. Andrew interwove the great biblical themes - Adam and Eve, Paradise and the Fall, the Patriarchs, Noah and the Flood, David, the Promised Land, and ultimately Christ and the Church - with confession of sin and repentance. The events of sacred history are revealed as events in my life, God's acts in the past as acts aimed at me and my salvation, the tragedy of sin and betrayal as my personal tragedy. My life is shown to me as part of the great and all embracing fight between God and the powers of darkness which rebel against Him”.

Meatfare Sunday (St. Matthew 25:31-46) St. Martin of Tours cutting his cloak to clothe the poor man. The Gospel reading appointed for Meatfare Sunday comes from the Gospel according to St Matthew and concerns the Last Judgement. Christ speaks to us concerning in what manner we will eventually be judged when He returns. Rather than pointing out that the righteous will consist of those who simply ‘believe’ in God and lead a good life, or even those who go to Church every Sunday, Christ tells us that it is not solely our faith, but also our actions that will determine our final destination. Jesus is more concerned about how we act toward those around us, and in particular, towards those less fortunate. One of the important things that Christ teaches us through His message is that whatever we do to the next person, we do the same to Christ also. And it brings up the important fact that the true Christian is the one who sees Christ in everyone. All are created in the image and likeness of God; we are all (or at least strive to be) living icons of Christ. And it’s when we recognise that image of Christ in everyone (including our ‘enemies’) that we gain a step closer to residing in the mansions of the Father that have been prepared for us. The next time that you set out to destroy someone’s reputation, break someone’s heart, show indifference and even ignorance toward a person, or maliciously gossip about someone, remember that Christ says that you’re doing exactly the same thing to Him! And whatever you do wrong to the next person will count against you when the Righteous Judge returns. We Christians can sometimes be judgemental toward those around us (both in and out of the Church), and yet we don’t stop to think that this will reflect on Christ Himself. We take the duty of the Judge and make judgement against the Saviour. We really need to see that icon of Christ in everyone no matter who they are. We also need to ACT as Christians, and what this means is pouring out your heart and resources to those less fortunate around us. Great and Holy Lent is a time for repentance, change, and renewal in our lives. It’s also a time to evaluate what we have done in terms of caring for our neighbour. Use this time leading toward Holy Pascha to do something about ACTING like an Orthodox Christian, rather than merely thinking like one. Holy Monastery of Axion Estin 18 февраля 2012 г. The Blind Beggar (18:35-43) SOURCE: Holy Monastery of Axion Estin Brothers and sisters " As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, 'Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.' " Beggars would often be found at the city gate where people are passing in and out. He is probably used to calling out to those who pass by, asking for money, begging for alms. Blindness and diseases of the eye were common illness in the ancient world. Those who lost one of their senses would often develop their other sense much more. But it takes no special insight for the blind man to realize that the number of people on the road crowding into the city is much large than usual. A pushing, shoving crowd competes to stay up with someone who attracts their attention. The blind man cries out to whoever can hear him, " What is going on? " And one of the bystanders says, " Jesus of Nazareth is passing by. " Once he is told that Jesus of Nazareth is passing by, he begins to yell at the top of his lungs: " He called out, 'Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!' Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, 'Son of David, have mercy on me!' " (18:38-39) But this is no helpless, feeble cry for help. It is loud and insistent. He keeps on shouting. He won't be shut up, even though the crowd continues to tell him to stop. Some people are intimidated and subdued by their own handicaps. It's possible to almost give up. But not our Blind man. What motivates his uncontainable cry for healing? Faith. To call someone " Son of David " as a title is equivalent to calling someone, " Messiah, " for it signifies to the Jews a person who is the promised descendent of David who will sit upon the throne of Israel. During most of his ministry, Jesus doesn't encourage others to refer to him as the Messiah, because the political implications of this title would soon prevent him from being able to minister effectively (Matthew 16:16, 20). But now his hour is come. His face is set towards Jerusalem where he will be crucified.

Meanwhile Hagia Sophia began to be filled with Turks. Papa Noufrakis was not daunted and continued. Others looked bemused at this fearless priest and the Turks, who until that moment were observing with silence, could not believe their eyes, because that which was taking place at that moment was truly unbelievable. The Gospel was followed by the Cherubic Hymn by Major Liaromatis, while Papa Lefteris placed the antimension on the table, to do the Proskomidi. The Turks continued to multiply. As time passed it was tough, but also unforgettable and epic. Papa Noufrakis continued. He takes a small Holy Chalice out of his bag, a paten, a knife and a small prosphoron with a small bottle of wine. With sacred emotion and devotion he does the Proskomidi, while Liaromatis continued chanting the Cherubic Hymn. When the Proskomidi was completed, he turned to Lieutenant Nicholas and told him to light a candle so he could follow him during the Great Entrance. The young Lieutenant went ahead and lit the candle, behind him was the priest crying out: " May the Lord God remember all of us.... " Then the Supplications and the Creed followed, which was said by Frantzis. Meanwhile Hagia Sophia was full of Turks and among them were many Greeks from the City, who happened to be there at the moment the Divine Liturgy was being celebrated, and they followed along with emotion, without daring to externalize their feelings " for fear of the Jews, " that is, the Turks. Only at certain times they could not restrain their tears flowing from their eyes and not betray their care, wiping them away before they became a " fiery " river which they could not hold back. The Liturgy meanwhile reached its most sacred point - the Anaphora. With an emotional voice Papa Lefteris said: " Your own of Your own, we offer to You, for all and through all. " All the officers knelt and the voice of Major Liaromatis could be heard chanting: " We sing to You, we bless You, we thank You, Lord, and we pray to You, our God. " After a short while the bloodless sacrifice of our Lord was completed in Hagia Sophia, after 466 entire years! This was followed by the " Axion Estin, " the " Our Father, " and the " With the fear of God, faith and love draw near, " and all the officers approached to commune from the Immaculate Mysteries. Papa Lefteris quickly said the prayers while Liaromatis chanted: " Blessed be the Name of the Lord..., " while the rest of the Holy Communion was consumed. Speaking to Lieutenant Nicholas, he said: " Gather everything quickly and put it in the bag, " then he did the Dismissal!
